'Invincible' 223cm teen basketball player stars as China win bronze

Zhang Ziyu played a starring role to drag China to women's basketball bronze at the Asian Games on Saturday, with her coach predicting the teenager standing 223cm (7ft 4in) will one day be "invincible". The 19-year-old is already taller than NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal and she made full use of her advantage as China beat Taiwan 77-64 in the third-place match in Nagoya.Zhang has made a name for herself in recent weeks, impressing American superstar Caitlin Clark at the Women's World Cup in Germany. She has made her significant height advantage count at the Asian Games, with Philippines head coach Javier Alvarez Garcia calling her "amazing" and tipping her to become the world's bestplayer.Zhang said she had "a lot to work on" despite scoring 14 points against Taiwan."I just want to be able to do my part and contribute for the team," she said. "I'm keen to work hard and learn more. I've put a lot of work into agility."I'm thankful to all the effort put into helping me become a better player," she added. Zhang looked in a different league at times against Taiwan, plucking the ball out of the air over her opponents' heads and dropping it into the basket.She headed into the game with China's highest points average per game. Mongolia's Amari Robinson, who faced Zhang and China in the quarter-finals, said "her height alone is obviously another opponent"."She has great hands, great footwork," said Robinson. "I just tried to be as tall as I could with what I had." Zhang drew praise from Clark during the World Cup, with the WNBA star saying she had "never played against a woman of that size".Zhang could end up in the WNBA one day and Philippines coach Alvarez Garcia has no doubts that she can succeed there."She's great, she's amazing," he said.'' "She will probably be like top one, top two players in the world, for sure."China coach Gong Luming said Zhang had "improved a lot in terms of her mobility".He cautioned that she was far from the finished article but said the world is her oyster if she can keep developing."Her height is one of her weapons, so we hope she can make the most of it," he said."If she can, she will be invincible."

World No.1 Sinner delays return with China Open withdrawal

World No.1 Jannik Sinner delayed his return to the courts when he withdrew from next week's China Open in Beijing on Friday having been out of action since his Wimbledon title in July due to a right knee injury."I won't be able to play in Beijing this year. My knee is not there where I would like it to be and I'm not ready to compete yet but I will do everything possible to be there as soon as I can," the Italian defending champion said on X.The five-time Grand Slam winner has not played since winning Wimbledon on July 12, pulling out of the US Open last month.Sinner, 25, had been dominating the 2026 season with an impressive record of 44 wins against three losses and six titles won, including Wimbledon.However, he suffered a major disappointment at the French Open, where he arrived as the overwhelming favourite but crashed out in the second round after suffering in a heatwave. ZVEREV'S CHANCE TO GET NO.1 RANKINGThe absence of the tour's top player in Beijing increases the chances for his closest rival, Alexander Zverev, to move to the top of the ATP rankings for the first time by the end of the season.At the moment, 1,810 points separate the world's top two players. But that gap will shrink by at least 440 points in the next ATP rankings.Sinner also has significantly more points to defend than the German between now and the end of the season, since in 2025 he won the ATP 500 events in Beijing and Vienna, the Paris Masters 1000 and the ATP Finals in Turin, which award 1,500 points to the winner.Zverev, 29, was far less effective at the end of last season and will therefore be able to rack up more points than Sinner in the year's final tournaments.Having won the first two Grand Slam titles of his career in 2026, at Roland Garros and the US Open, Zverev reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the final at Wimbledon, the German is enjoying the best season of his career.He is entered in tournaments in Beijing, Shanghai and Vienna over the coming weeks.

ICC eyes China in bid to expand cricket

China is emerging as a key target for growth as the International Cricket Council (ICC) seeks new fans worldwide, its chief executive says.While South Asia accounts for about 90 percent of cricket's billion-plus fans, the ICC is seeking to expand the sport's fan base by 500 million and sees China's 1.4 billion people as a potentially huge audience -- helped by the steady progress of its women's team."The continued success of their women's team has provided a major boost to cricket in the country," ICC chief executive Sanjog Gupta told AFP.China became a focus market after hosting cricket at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and through the progress of its women's national team, which has climbed 10 places in the world rankings over the past two years.There is still far to go, however. In the ICC T20 rankings the women are ranked a modest 36th, while the men languish in 92nd place.The women were also knocked out of the Asian Games on Thursday without a ball being bowled, two days before the opening ceremony.A sodden outfield caused by days of rain in Nagoya, Japan, prevented any play from taking place in China's morning quarter-final against Bangladesh, who went through to the semi-finals by virtue of being the higher.Still, China is one of several markets the ICC sees as crucial to broadening cricket's appeal beyond its traditional strongholds of South Asia, England, and Australia. 'NEXT LEAP'The ICC has spent $1.5 million in China to boost the sport over the past five years.The country now has three top-level cricket venues, including a new 1,500-seat stadium in Taicang expected to host domestic and international matches and provide a training base for the national teams.The ICC has begun testing the appetite for the sport in China.Some women's T20 World Cup matches were broadcast in Mandarin, and the final week of the 2026 men's T20 World Cup generated 4.4 million video views in China.The country's potential emergence is particularly significant for the ICC because, unlike several newer cricket nations, its men's and women's teams are made up largely of homegrown players rather than players from South Asian communities.Indonesia, a country of around 280 million people, has also been identified as a market with growth potential. Its men's team T20 ranking is 63rd, and the women's team, 23rd."If even segments of the population in China and Indonesia start engaging with the sport, then they could power the next leap in the scale of cricket's fandom," Gupta said."It can play a significant role in the sport's ambition to add 500 million fans to its global fan base, which is the ICC chair's stated ambition." 'GROW THE GAME'The ICC believes cricket's return to the Olympics at the 2028 Los Angeles Games could provide another boost, with men's and women's T20 tournaments set to award medals for the first time since the sport's lone previous appearance in 1900.The ICC's push into new markets has paid off elsewhere.Italy offered a glimpse of the potential of another non-traditional market when it made its men's T20 World Cup debut earlier this year, beating Nepal and pushing England close.The ICC push has the backing of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), custodian of the game's laws."MCC is very pleased to be sending a women's team for an overseas tour of China in 2027," MCC director of cricket and operations Rob Lynch told AFP."We see this tour as a huge opportunity to be able to grow the game in China," he added.

China out of Asian Games women's cricket without a ball being bowled

Daniel HICKS China's women returned to Asian Games cricket for the first time in 12 years on Thursday -- only to be knocked out without a ball being bowled two days before the opening ceremony.On a seemingly perfect day for T20 cricket under blue skies and sunshine at the Korogi Athletic Park in Nagoya, a sodden outfield caused by days of rain prevented any play from taking place in China's morning quarter-final against Bangladesh. Bangladesh went through to the semi-finals by virtue of being the higher ranked side under Asian Games competition rules.There they will meet Pakistan, whose last-eight match against Thailand later in the day was reduced to 11 overs per side after the start was delayed by 90 minutes as groundstaff worked to dry the outfield. Thailand, anchored by wicketkeeper Nannapat Koncharoenkai's 49, posted a competitive 91-4 in their 11 overs.Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals before avoiding an upset by reaching 92-7 with two balls to go. Record rainfall a week ago caused flooding in Nagoya and caused some Asian Games athletes to be evacuated from their accommodation.Parts of the Korogi Park outfield had still clearly not recovered from the deluge in time to stage both Thursday's matches. "We knew it was going to be tough to get a game given the weather in the last week here and all the challenges there have been," said China's Australian coach Alan Newington."We're grateful to the ground staff for trying their best, but we thought it was going to be tough to get a game. "But we're very disappointed. We were hoping the world could see the China women play for the first time in a big tournament. But we'll reset and we'll try again."The Nagoya-Aichi Games officially begin with an opening ceremony on Saturday. Clear skies are forecast for Friday's remaining quarter-finals == Sri Lanka v Malaysia and hosts Japan v India.But the weather forecast is poor for Sunday and Tuesday when the semi-finals and medal finals are due to take place, with a typhoon threatening to pass close by. The men's cricket competition begins with a preliminary round from next Thursday before heavyweights India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh enter the fray at the quarter-final stage.India have a star-studded squad featuring many of the players that won the T20 World Cup earlier this year, plus 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.dh/pst

Djokovic to return to China Open after 11-year absence

Novak Djokovic will return to the China Open after an 11-year absence, the 24-times Grand Slam champion announced on Wednesday, as he looks to rebuild momentum after slipping to world number 12 and suffering a shock first-round exit at the U.S. Open.The 39-year-old Serb is returning to the ATP 500 event in Beijing, where he boasts a perfect record and a tournament-best six titles.Djokovic's most recent China Open triumph came in 2015, the last year he competed at the tournament.The decision follows his first-round loss at the U.S. Open to unseeded Argentine Mariano Navone in five sets.Djokovic, a four-times champion in New York, vomited midway through the match and was hampered by back and shoulder issues that affected his serve late on.The defeat marked the first time Djokovic had lost in the opening round of a Grand Slam since the 2006 Australian Open."I am excited to come back and perform in front of all of you at the National Tennis Centre - one of the nicest venues we have in tennis," the former world number one said on social media.The men's draw at the China Open runs from September 30 to October 6.World number one Jannik Sinner won the men's title last year.

Badminton world number one An Se-young sent a warning for the Asian Games as she clinched her third China Masters title in a row in ominous fashion. South Korea's reigning Olympic and world champion will defend her crown when the Asian Games begin on September 19 in Aichi-Nagoya in Japan. The 24-year-old will be overwhelming favourite after winning the China Masters on Sunday with a ruthless 21-17, 21-6 demolition of Tomoka Miyazaki in Shenzhen.An did not drop a game all week on the way to her seventh title of the season. "I'm so proud of myself. I'm really pleased with the result and I feel so happy," An said. Despite being the undoubted dominant force in women's badminton once more this year, An said:"There are many players coming up and challenging."I don't think any match can be taken lightly." The men's singles final was surprisingly an all-Hong Kong affair, with world number 32 Jason Gunawan defeating Lee Cheuk-Yiu 21-9, 21-16. In the men's doubles, India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat home duo He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu in a three-game battle. Shetty and Rankireddy will defend their Asian Games men's doubles title in Japan. "Going into the Asian Games winning a title definitely reassures us what we are working on is heading in the right direction," said Shetty. "We will go back home, push ourselves to the limit, train for the next 10 days and go all guns blazing in Japan. We want to go out there and have some fun." China's Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping won the mixed doubles while Sumire Nakade and Miyu Takahashi of Japan clinched the women's doubles crown.bur-pst/dh

Over 599 Thousand evacuated due to East China torrential rain

Local authorities in China's Fujian Province have evacuated more than 599,000 people as torrential rains continued to lash the eastern province for several days.  The provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said 599,300 residents had been evacuated from vulnerable coastal and inland areas across the province. The headquarters activated a Level III emergency response for flood control, the third-highest level, while maintaining a Level IV emergency response for typhoon prevention. Meanwhile, several departments in Fujian Province urgently allocated 210 million yuan (about USD 31 million) for emergency rescue operations, disaster relief and post-disaster recovery in the worst-affected areas. Typhoon Saudel, the 18th typhoon of 2026, made its third landfall in Zhangpu County, under the jurisdiction of Zhangzhou City in Fujian Province, last Thursday, prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of people amid warnings of strong winds and heavy rainfall. The typhoon also affected 128,500 residents across 53 counties in neighboring Jiangxi Province, forcing about 8,700 people to evacuate urgently. Jiangxi authorities activated a Level IV emergency response for flood control on Friday.
