Paris Saint-Germain recovered from a shambolic start as Desire Doue inspired a comeback from two goals down to beat Monaco 3-2 in the principality in the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase play-off tie on Tuesday.United States star Folarin Balogun opened the scoring after just 55 seconds and found the net again on 18 minutes to put Monaco in control against their French Ligue 1 rivals at the Stade Louis II.Vitinha then missed a chance for the reigning European champions to reduce the deficit when he had a penalty saved and last year's Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele came off injured before the half-hour mark, but his replacement Doue sparked the comeback.He scored and then helped set up Achraf Hakimi for the equaliser just before the break, and Monaco then had Aleksandr Golovin sent off right at the start of the second half. Doue then got the winner on 67 minutes."He is an incredible player and a different player. I am very pleased for him because he deserved it," PSG coach Luis Enrique told broadcaster Canal Plus."There is pressure on us to win and we like that pressure, but there are difficult moments in games that are hard to overcome," he added.The result keeps the tie alive going into the return leg in Paris next Wednesday, but PSG are now strong favourites to seal a place in the last 16.They came into this game having been knocked off top spot in the French league last weekend following a defeat at Rennes, with Lens replacing them at the summit.However, they are a huge 20 points clear of Monaco, who find themselves languishing in eighth due to an inability to put together a consistent run of form.Nevertheless, Monaco notably held Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus at home during the league phase in Europe and also won 1-0 at home to PSG in Ligue 1 in November.Balogun double, Dembele injuryThis time they went in front as Balogun headed in from close range from a Golovin cross for the fastest goal ever conceded in a European tie by PSG.Monaco were in dreamland as they doubled their advantage when Balogun played a quick one-two with Maghnes Akliouche before running through to finish past goalkeeper Matfei Safonov.A shock result appeared on the cards, with PSG's title seemingly very much on the line, all the more so when Vitinha's penalty was saved by Philipp Koehn after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was brought down by Wout Faes.That was the fourth penalty out of their last five in the Champions League that PSG had failed to convert, and things got worse for them when Dembele - who had been a doubt pre-match and has had an injury-hit season - had to come off.Yet his withdrawal really turned out to be a blessing, as Doue entered the fray and had a devastating impact.The standout performer in PSG's 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in last season's final had been on the field barely two minutes when he controlled Bradley Barcola's pass in the box before smashing a left-foot shot low into the far corner.The leveller then came four minutes from the interval when a Doue shot was parried by Koehn, with Hakimi controlling the loose ball before applying the finish.Monaco's grip on the game was really gone within three minutes of the restart as Russian playmaker Golovin saw red following a VAR check for his challenge on Vitinha, granting PSG the extra man. The visitors took advantage as Warren Zaire-Emery laid the ball off for Doue to score his second of the night and make it 3-2 midway through the second half."I just did my job. We are pleased because the most important thing in games like these is just to win," Doue told Canal Plus.PSG will hope to finish off the tie next week, with the winners facing either Barcelona or Chelsea in the next round.It is a big ask now for Monaco, although they will likely be relieved to be heading to Paris with just a one-goal deficit after playing for so long with 10 men. 

Al Sadd secured a place in the AFC Champions League Elite round of 16 despite a 4-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad Club at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium Tuesday.The big victory for Al Ittihad still allowed Al Sadd to claim the final last 16 spot from the West Zone, edging out fellow Qatari side Al Gharafa, who were eliminated after a 2-0 loss to Tractor FC.Qatar’s other representative, Al Duhail, also advanced to the last 16 following Tuesday’s outcomes. Al Duhail finished seventh in the West Zone with eight points, edging Al Sadd on goal difference.Al Sadd entered Tuesday’s match needing a win to advance, while Al Ittihad had already secured qualification.The Saudi side dominated early, testing goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham before breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute.Houssem Aouar pounced on a rebound to slot home, putting Al Sadd on the back foot. Eight minutes later, Youssef En-Nesyri doubled the lead, evading defenders and firing through Barsham’s legs.Pedro Miguel inadvertently added to Al Sadd’s woes with an own goal in the 33rd minute. Rafa Mujica pulled one back for Al Sadd before halftime, but Stephane Keller sealed Al Ittihad’s 4-1 victory in the 63rd minute.Despite the defeat, Al Sadd’s previous results and goal difference were sufficient to secure Round of 16 qualification, ensuring Qatar had two representatives advancing to the knockout stage."We are happy to qualify. Two months ago, the team was almost out of the tournament, and now we have made it. We will reassess and prepare for what comes next. Saudi clubs are currently the strongest in the AFC Champions League, which is natural," Al Sadd coach Roberto Mancini.On defeat to Al Ittihad, he added: "We were not happy with the result, but the team overcame the early difficulties and secured qualification despite a tough match against a strong opponent."Al Gharafa SC’s campaign, however, ended in disappointment in 10th place with six points. Facing Tractor FC at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium, the Cheetahs needed a win to keep their hopes alive but were controlled by the Iranian side for much of the match.Tractor broke the deadlock in the 61st minute after Al Gharafa failed to clear a rebound, with Mahdi Hashemnezhad finishing clinically. The visitors then doubled their advantage in the 81st minute through Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh, leaving Al Gharafa unable to respond and confirming their exit from the competition. 

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique dismissed any suggestions of dressing room disharmony as the reigning European champions prepared to put their continental title on the line this midweek against domestic rivals Monaco.PSG are struggling to rediscover the brilliant form they showed in the second half of last season, when they played breath-taking football on the way to winning the Champions League for the first time in their history.The club from the French capital were knocked off the top of the Ligue 1 table at the weekend after a 3-1 defeat away to Rennes allowed Lens to climb above them. That came after a start to 2026 which had already seen them go out of the French Cup to local rivals Paris FC and finish 11th in the league phase of the Champions League. Theirfailure to win any of their last three European games left them facing this play-off for a place in the last 16.After the defeat in Rennes, last year's Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele had a go at his colleagues as he suggested too many had stopped playing for the collective. "We need to play for Paris Saint-Germain if we are going to win matches, because if we all just play for ourselves it won't work and we won't win the trophies we want to win," Dembele said in a post-match TV interview. "Last season we put the club first before thinking about ourselves, so I think we need to start thinking like that again."Enrique was asked about those comments after arriving in Monaco Monday, on the eve of the Champions League play-off first leg against the principality side. "There is always noise around PSG and we just have to accept it," said the Spaniard, who said the defeat in Rennes was "cruel" on his side. "It is true that we would have liked to come into this game with a victory but now it is time for the Champions League and we are all motivated."PSG are strong favourites to beat a Monaco side who sit eighth in Ligue 1, 20 points behind their opponents. However, Monaco have found some form again recently after a poor run, and they beat PSG 1-0 when the teams last clashed, at the Stade Louis II in late November."We ‌can expect a match ⁠similar to the one we played, we’re not going ⁠to change anything because ⁠we're going to try to win this match,” Enrique added.He also dismissed concerns about facing a domestic rival in the Champions League. "It's football, it's the same thing, you have to try to do the same thing to ​win the match. What I hope is to see the best version of PSG."We started the Champions League last season with the same lack of efficiency, but when you look at the results we later had, it meant we were superior to our opponents, and that's what we're aiming for again. I'm sure we can ‌get back ​to that very quickly,” he added.Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli, who has a doubt over the fitness of French international midfielder Maghnes Akliouche insisted: "We need to believe we can get a result, otherwise there is no point playing the game."Monaco skipper Denis Zakaria: "If we are not at 100 percent and don't play the perfect game, it will be difficult for us." 

Al Sadd breathed life into their AFC Champions League Elite hopes with a 2-0 win against Tractor FC at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha Tuesday. The win moved Qatar’s Al Sadd to eight points while it was Tractor’s first defeat, with the Iran side having already confirmed last 16 qualification.Al Sadd’s early high pressing game almost came to fruition in the ninth minute when Akram Afif whipped in a cross for Roberto Firmino, whose glancing header drifted just wide off the left post. The Iranian side made their presence felt five minutes later with Domagoj Drozdek getting at the end of a counter-attacking move, forcing Al Sadd keeper Meshaal Barsham into a save.Al Sadd refused to let Tractor settle as they stayed on the offensive with Rafa Mujica, Giovani and Boualem Khoukhi all threatening from inside the box.Tractor continued to look dangerous on the counter and they almost punished Al Sadd in the 32nd minute when Drozdek set up Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh at the top of the box, only for the midfielder to drag his effort wide.Al Sadd came knocking on Tractor’s door in the 52nd minute with Hashim Ali seeing his deflected shot from inside the area sail over the bar, while Barsham stayed sharp to tip over Hosseinzadeh’s effort off a counter-attacking move.The Qatari side’s positive approach saw them take the lead in the 61st minute after Afif nodded Pedro Miguel’s cross into the path of Mujica, who controlled beautifully before slotting past Tractor keeper Alireza Beiranvand.Barsham, who had a quiet first half, stayed calm to deflect ​​Regi Lushkja’s stinging shot in the 73rd minute before Tibor Halilovic wasted another opportunity for Tractor to draw level when he dragged his effort just wide off the right post.Al Sadd came close to netting their second in the 83rd minute but Claudinho saw his close-range effort saved by Beiranvand before Hashim sent the follow-up over the bar.Firmino guaranteed the victory for Al Sadd in the 89th minute after Claudinho set-up the Brazilian at the far post for an easy finish. Champions in 2011, Al Sadd will target another three points in their final League Stage clash against Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad Club, with the hope it will be enough to take them through.Al Sadd coach Roberto Mancini praised his side’s performance, describing the match as difficult but highlighting a strong second-half display. “The match was tough and we performed well, especially in the second half,” Mancini said at the post-match press conference. “We created many chances after the break and faced an opponent that had not lost in the tournament this season. It was very important for us to secure this win over Tractor.”He added that Al Sadd will continue to fight for their chances of progression, saying the team will hold on to its hopes going forward.Meanwhile, Al Sadd star Akram Afif, who was named man of the match, thanked the fans for their support. “I thank the Al Sadd supporters who stood by us in this difficult game,” Afif said. “This was our second victory and an important one that we really needed. Our qualification chances are still open and we will keep pushing until the final match.” 

Qatar's Al Duhail and Sharjah settled for a 1-1 draw which kept their AFC Champions League Elite last 16 hopes just about alive. The stalemate took both sides to eight points, with their fates to be decided in next week’s final round of league stage matches.Both teams came into the tie needing victory, with Al Duhail having gone down 2-1 against Iran side Tractor SC last time out, while Sharjah fell to a solitary goal against Saudi Pro League outfit Al Hilal.The home side threatened in the sixth minute with Jean-Charles Castelletto sending his glancing header off Benjamin Bourigeaud’s cross just wide of the right post, while Sharjah responded three minutes later with Matheus Saldanha forcing Al Duhail keeper Salah Zakaria into a save.Al Duhail exposed Sharjah again a minute later when Salah Zakaria spilled Edmílson Junior’s close-range shot into the path of Adil Boulbina who, however, was flagged offside.Another chance went begging for the Qatari side in the 12th minute when Edmílson Junior slipped through into the box and floated the ball for an unmarked Boubakary Soumare at the far post who, however, crashed his shot against the left post.The missed opportunities came back to haunt Al Duhail when Zakaria brought down Luanzinho inside the box, allowing Igor Coronado to convert from the spot in the 41st minute.Boulbina and Krzysztof Piatek caused problems for Sharjah early in the second half, while Maro Katinic couldn’t find the target from Coronado’s cross in the 50th minute with Luanzinho flashing his headed attempt agonisingly wide 10 minutes later from a fast break.Al Duhail were left frustrated again in the 62nd minute when Luanzinho fed an unmarked Boulbina, whose effort was ruled offside.There was, however, joy for the Algerian midfielder as he equalised from the spot in the 81st minute after being brought down by Rafael Pereira.Shaheen Abdalla had initially saved the effort, diving to his right to stop the effort but the penalty had to be retaken as the keeper had come off his line, with Boulbina making no mistake with his second attempt as the points were shared. 

Top of both the Premier League and Champions League and still in both domestic cup competitions, Arsenal fans should be relishing what could yet turn out to be the greatest season in the Gunners’ history. But a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United has reopened the debate over whether Mikel Arteta’s side can shrug off their tag of nearly men to deliver a first league title in 22 years. Arsenal still hold a four-point lead over an inconsistent Manchester City and surprise-packages Aston Villa at the top of the table with 15 games to go. Already assured of progression to the Champions League last 16, Arteta’s men are also well placed to reach the League Cup final and have a favourable home draw against third-tier Wigan in the FA Cup fourth round. But legendary former captain Patrick Vieira questioned the mental strength of the current Arsenal crop after a tentative display against United to lose at home for the first time this season. They have finished second for the past three Premier League seasons and have not won any major trophy since Arteta’s debut season six years ago. “There are still questions about the mental strength of the team,” Vieira said. “They need to understand when they are on the pitch they have to play with more energy and more risks. They have the quality.” As City and Villa have stumbled in recent weeks, Arsenal have wasted the chance to turn the title race into a something of a procession. After back-to-back goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, Arsenal conceded three goals for the first time in nearly three years as a rejuvenated United won at the Emirates for the first time since 2019. “We have to show the mental strength that we have on the pitch when it comes to matchday,” said Arteta when questioned about his side’s doubters. “We lost a game... It’s how we react to that and I am very convinced because I know those players in that dressing room and how much we want it that we’re going to react immediately.” Despite their lofty position, a lack of invention in the final third is not a new problem for Arteta to solve. No Arsenal player has scored more than five league goals this season, a quarter of the tally of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. A Lisandro Martinez own goal and Mikel Merino’s finish from a corner means more than half of Arsenal’s Premier League goals have come either from opposition players or set-pieces. The signing of Viktor Gyokeres has failed to end Arteta’s quest for a prolific number nine, while star winger Bukayo Saka has gone off the boil with no goals in his last 13 games. However, Arsenal remain very much in the box seat for a first title since Vieira’s side went a full league season unbeaten in 2003/04, thanks in part to the unreliability of their rivals. City won for the first time in five league games in 2026 against bottom-of-the-table Wolves on Saturday. But Pep Guardiola’s men travel to Tottenham and Liverpool in their next two league games – two stadiums where they have rarely succeeded even during a glorious era. Villa’s first title since 1980/81 would be an even bigger shock as they continue to punch above their weight under Unai Emery. “The journey’s not always going to be smooth, there’s going to be ups and downs,” said Saka. “It’s up to us to show our character next week.” If Arsenal can restore order, the title remains theirs for the taking. 

Real Madrid are aiming to seal direct passage to the Champions League last 16 at Benfica Wednesday, but standing in their way is their divisive former coach Jose Mourinho.The veteran Portuguese still has slim hopes of taking Benfica into the play-off round, needing victory and other results to go their way, but pride alone is enough of a reward as he takes on Alvaro Arbeloa's 15-time European champions.Mourinho never won the Champions League with Madrid, coaching the club between 2010 and 2013, a period in which rivals Barcelona had the upper hand both at home and on the continent.His opposite number at the Estadio da Luz is a former disciple of his in ex-Madrid defender Arbeloa, one of his most loyal foot soldiers during his reign. However, their strong prior relationship has not stopped the oft-antagonistic Mourinho from taking an apparent dig at him ahead of the match."For me, it's a surprise when coaches with no history get the opportunity to manage the most important clubs in the world," said Mourinho last week, interpreted as commentary on Arbeloa's appointment to replace Xabi Alonso earlier in January.Arbeloa had been coaching Madrid's reserve team, with Los Blancos his debut first team job. He responded with grace to Mourinho's words. "You all know what Mourinho means to me. If a coach like that speaks, especially him, I listen and analyse it," said the 43-year-old Spaniard.In his first press conference as Madrid coach, Arbeloa said he carries Mourinho "within him" and that it was an "honour and a privilege" to have worked under the Portuguese. Arbeloa said he would try to be himself rather than an imitation of the 63-year-old. "While it's true I am not afraid of failing, and have never been, I'm sure that if I tried to be Jose Mourinho, I would fail spectacularly," he explained.Madrid crashed out of the Copa del Rey at second-tier Albacete in Arbeloa's first match at the helm but have won the following three games, including a 6-1 demolition of Monaco. Sitting third in the league phase table, victory would ensure Madrid progressed to the last 16, avoiding the play-off round, and gaining second-leg home advantage.Madrid moved on after Mourinho but some of his hallmarks have returned, particularly in recent years as the club regularly rail against officiating in Spain. Mourinho's siege mentality has been embraced by club president Florentino Perez, and Arbeloa's appointment means some aspects of the Portuguese's game returning too.The now-Benfica boss advocated for a counter-attacking Madrid and Arbeloa says he would be foolish not to utilise that strategy. "I cannot go against what is natural for the players, the opposite -- I have to try and take advantage of it," said Arbeloa after Madrid beat Villarreal on Saturday.Mourinho, a rare coach admired by Perez, has only faced Real Madrid once since leaving the club in 2013. While coaching Manchester United in 2017 he fell to a 2-1 defeat by Madrid in the European Super Cup final in Macedonia.In the first few years after leaving Madrid he was occasionally linked with a return, although Perez never pulled the trigger on it, seemingly aware of the negative effects it could have. Mourinho stoked the rivalry between Madrid and Barcelona to unprecedented heights in the modern game, controversially poking then Barca assistant Tito Vilanova in eye during a brawl following a Spanish Super Cup defeat in 2011.There were also fractures in the Madrid dressing room under the pressure of Mourinho's approach and demands. Since his heyday at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, which led him to Madrid, Mourinho's career has taken a turn for the worse.He won the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017 during a difficult spell there, before modest stints at Tottenham, Roma and Fenerbahce.Benfica appointed him in September, hoping he could turn things around, but several defeats in the Champions League have left them facing an early European exit.Domestically Benfica sit third, some way behind leaders Porto, who knocked them out of the Portuguese Cup earlier in January, with fans left furious.Amid the problems Mourinho has, Madrid's visit to Lisbon is an invitation for him to reassert some dominance, albeit for one night only, before a club which has never forgotten him. 

Atletico Madrid’s hopes of earning a Champions League top eight spot at the end of the league phase were diminished by a 1-1 draw at Galatasaray Wednesday in their penultimate fixture. Although the point took them provisionally eighth, the three-time runners-up may now find it tricky to progress straight to the last 16. Giuliano Simeone’s early goal was the perfect start for his father Diego Simeone’s team, but Marcos Llorente’s own goal left honours even in Istanbul. The Spain international made amends with a vital late interception which saved his team falling to defeat. Visitors Atletico dampened a lively atmosphere with their fourth minute goal, nodded home by Giuliano from Matteo Ruggeri’s cross. Turkish side Galatasaray pulled level after 20 minutes when Llorente bundled Roland Sallai’s cross into his own net as he tried to cut it out, denying his goalkeeper Jan Oblak a clean sheet on his 100th Champions League appearance. Baris Yilmaz could have sent Galatasaray ahead before half-time but skewed a shot high over the bar when well placed to convert. Atletico came close to regaining their advantage just before the hour mark when Abdulkerim Bardakci cleared David Hancko’s effort off the line to safety. Atletico coach Simeone replaced Sorloth with French veteran Antoine Griezmann, keeping Julian Alvarez on the pitch despite his recent poor form in front of goal. The Argentina international has scored just once in his last 10 matches, but put in a more lively showing against Galatasaray than in some other recent appearances. With five minutes remaining Griezmann whipped a free-kick towards the top corner but Galatasaray goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir tipped his effort away and then denied Alex Baena to preserve a point for his side. Galatasaray might have won it at the death but Llorente surged in to pinch the ball from Eren Elmali as he was poised to strike. The draw was not overly satisfying for the Turkish outfit, away at Manchester City in their final group match next week where they will aim to qualify for the play-off round.Atletico host Bodo/Glimt and still have a chance of sealing a top-eight league phase spot. 

Gabriel Jesus said it was a dream to score at the San Siro as he marked his first start in this season’s Champions ‌League by netting twice in Arsenal’s 3-1 win ‌at Inter Milan ‍on Tuesday. The Brazilian scored twice in the first half, either side of Inter’s equaliser, to send Arsenal on their way to their seventh win from seven games ‍in the competition, and he was emotional after the final whistle. “It’s a dream night,” Jesus said. “I always dreamed of being a footballer. I watched when I was a kid. I watched a lot of Serie A, so to be here in this stadium ‌and score here is tears in my eyes because I always dreamed of being here.” Jesus only returned to action in December ‍having been sidelined since last January after ‌suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee. “There is always a reason that things happen even whether it’s good things or difficult things,” Jesus said. “I learned that during my 11 months out of the field.” The Premier League leaders proved too strong for an Inter side top of Serie A, a team which lost last year’s final and beat Arsenal 1-0 during last season’s competition. “It is always difficult to ​play against Inter Milan. ‌We came here last season and lost,” Jesus added. “Tonight we played better than them, we controlled them ‍but they are a top team and they attack. We scored at the end and got the three points.” Jesus has yet to start in the Premier League since his return, making seven substitute appearances, but his performance against Inter will ​surely give manager Mikel Arteta food for thought ahead of Sunday’s game with Manchester United. “Everyone wants to start. I am a very respectful guy,” Jesus said. “I am not a kid anymore, I am 28, so I understand football. I am very happy Vik (Gyokeres) came on and scored a goal. I am so happy I scored and Vik scored. I am confident Kai (Havertz) will score when he gets the chance.” 

Manchester City suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat against Bodo/Glimt as the Norwegian minnows caused one of the biggest shocks in Champions League history. Pep Guardiola’s side were blown away by Kasper Hogh’s first half brace and a second half strike from Jens Petter Hauge at the ecstatic Aspmyra Stadion. Rayan Cherki got one back moments after Hauge’s goal, but Rodri’s dismissal for two bookings left City in tatters as Bodo/Glimt celebrated their first ever win in the Champions League group phase. In a fishing town situated 200km north of the Arctic Circle, the 2023 European champions were caught cold in freezing temperatures of minus two degrees. Bodo’s entire population of only 55,000 people could almost fit into City’s Etihad Stadium. But Kjetil Knutsen’s underdogs ignored the huge financial and talent gap between the clubs to inflict a chastening defeat on the Premier League giants. Bodo/Glimt, who hadn’t played since December after the end of the Norwegian season, reached the Europa League semi-finals last term, an impressive run that maintained their remarkable rise over the last decade. In their first ever season in the Champions League group phase, Bodo/Glimt had already earned creditable draws against Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham. City failed to heed the warning, playing with a lack of urgency in the face of Bodo/Glimt’s relentless pressing. They travelled to Norway earlier than Guardiola’s usual schedule to ensure his players were able to practise on Bodo/Glimt’s artificial pitch. Yet they were totally out of sync in the latest disjointed display in an increasingly troubled season. City are without a win in their last four Premier League matches, with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester United leaving them seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Guardiola will be alarmed by City’s second successive tame surrender, which exposed the Spainard’s claim that his players had rediscovered their hunger after finishing without a trophy last season. The City boss had said he planned to enjoy the Northern Lights from his hotel before the match, but that will be his only fond memory from one of the most embarrassing losses of his glittering career. City’s final group phase fixture is at home to Galatasaray on January 28 as they try to seal an automatic place in the last 16 via a top-eight finish. 

Al Gharafa will take on Sharjah at Thani bin Jassim Stadium in the Qatari-Emirati Super Cup final Thursday, with coach Pedro Martins backing his team to rise to the challenge.Speaking at a press conference Wednesday, Martins said the match would be difficult against an experienced Sharjah side that has been performing well in the AFC Champions League, but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to deliver a strong performance and win the title.“We are fully aware of the challenge we face in this final, but we are ready and ambitious to win. We hope to produce the level required to lift the championship cup,” Martins said.He added that Al Gharafa is currently enjoying a good run of form after positive results in recent matches, which he hopes will be reflected against Sharjah.Martins noted that the technical staff had carefully studied Sharjah’s strengths and weaknesses, while also assessing their own team, stressing that the focus would be on Al Gharafa’s style of play to produce the performance needed in such an important match. He expressed hope that the Super Cup would be presented to Al Gharafa, its fans and Qatari football.The Al Gharafa coach dismissed suggestions that his side was under pressure ahead of the final, stating that the atmosphere within the squad was positive and that all players were eager to be crowned champions at this stage of the season.He also highlighted the importance of fan support, saying, “We enjoy great backing at all levels, especially from our supporters, who we expect will play a key role in this crucial encounter. We hope to make Al Gharafa fans happy by winning the championship.”Meanwhile, Al Gharafa’s Spanish forward Joselu also confirmed the team’s readiness for the Super Cup final, while acknowledging the difficulty of one-off finals.“We have prepared well for the match against Sharjah and understand how demanding finals can be, as they offer only one opportunity to win a title,” Joselu said. “We must take that chance in the right way and do everything possible to win the cup.”Joselu stressed that the match cannot be compared to league fixtures, noting that finals are decided in a single encounter, unlike the league which unfolds over several months. He added that Al Gharafa is enjoying an impressive season and is on the right path, describing a mid-season trophy as a significant achievement, with hopes of further success by the end of the campaign.The Spanish striker also called on Al Gharafa supporters to attend the match and back the team, reaffirming the players’ determination to secure the title.Drawing on his experience of playing in finals during his career in Europe, particularly with Real Madrid, Joselu said, “Finals are different from any other matches. My advice to my teammates is to enjoy the occasion and give their best. I am confident in Al Gharafa’s ability to perform well despite the difficulty of the match, and I sense great enthusiasm within the squad to achieve victory.”The Qatari-Emirati Super Cup features four matches, beginning with Al Gharafa of Qatar against Sharjah Thursday. This will be followed by the Challenge Shield match between Al Wahda of the UAE and Al Duhail of Qatar Friday, the Super Shield clash between Al Sadd of Qatar and Shabab Al Ahli of the UAE on Saturday, and concluding with the Challenge Cup match between Al Jazira of the UAE and Al Ahli of Qatar on January 25. 

Macau’s former World No 1 Zhu Yuling and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yun-Ju emerged champions at WTT Champions Doha, as the curtain came down on five days of high intensity table tennis at Lusail Sports Arena Sunday. Zhu completed a remarkable comeback by lifting the women’s singles trophy, while Lin finally ended a long title drought to claim the men’s crown. Zhu added another inspirational chapter to her comeback story by defeating third seed Chen Xingtong of China 4-2 (5-11, 13-11, 3-11, 11-7, 11-8, 13-11) in a gripping final. The victory earned Zhu her first winner’s trophy and continued a stunning return to the sport following a four year absence from international competition. Chen set the early tone, imposing herself in the opening game and striking first despite late resistance from Zhu. The second game proved pivotal, with both players locked in explosive backhand exchanges that brought the crowd to life. Zhu saved two game points before levelling the match after Chen sent her finisher into the net at 12-11. Chen responded strongly in the third to regain control, but momentum swung again in the fourth as Zhu forced a decider in what was shaping into a finely balanced contest. The fifth game proved crucial. After seeing her lead reduced, Zhu called a time out and, despite Chen briefly levelling at 8-8, the decision paid off as Zhu reeled off three straight points to move ahead for the first time. The sixth game delivered the final twist. Chen threatened to force a seventh after moving 10-9 ahead, but a fortunate edge of the table brought Zhu back to 10-10. Chen had one last chance to extend the match, but sent the ball long at 12-11, sealing the title for Zhu. Holding her arms aloft, Zhu celebrated a hard earned triumph. “I am feeling relatively calm since I haven’t come out of the match yet. I played two matches today, which is the first time after I came back. It’s a big test for my physical and mental strength,” Zhu said. “I don’t know whether I am already reaching the end of my table tennis career. If I want to carry on, I’d treat every match, every day and every experience as the last one to compete and leave no regrets.” The title marked Zhu’s first appearance in a WTT Champions final and provided the perfect start to her 2026 campaign. For Chen, winner in Yokohama last season, the wait for a second WTT Champions title continues. In the men’s final, Lin Yun-Ju ended a 798 day wait for silverware with a commanding straight games victory over surprise finalist Jang Woojin of South Korea, winning 11-7, 11-9, 11-9, 13-11 at Infinity Arena. Lin last lifted a trophy at WTT Champions Frankfurt 2023 and had come close on several occasions since. This time, the 22-year-old showed no intention of letting the opportunity slip, producing a composed and ruthless performance to secure his fourth WTT Series singles title. The triumph adds to Lin’s previous successes at WTT Champions Frankfurt 2023, WTT Contender Zagreb 2022 and WTT Contender Almaty 2023, and signals a timely return to form for the player known as the ‘silent assassin’. Attention now turns to WTT Star Contender Doha, which be held at the Lusail Sports Arena from January 13-18.
