Team Europe regained the Solheim Cup with a 15-13 victory over the United States on Sunday in Den Bosch, Netherlands.Lottie Woad sank a 2-foot putt on the 17th hole to record a 2&1 win over Auston Kim, pushing the Europeans past the 14 1/2-point threshold at Bernardus Golf. That included Carlota Ciganda's guaranteed half point in her match.The successful putt ignited a celebration that featured Woad leaping into the arms of her teammates as Europe reveled in its eighth win in the event and avenged the United States' victory in 2024.Woad admitted she wasn't sure if it was her match or that of Carlota Ciganda that ultimately would cement the victory for Team Europe."I knew it was mine or Carlota's match," Woad said. "And when Auston made those three birdies in a row that was great golf from her and I just had to try and stay steady, and the moment on 16 was a key one, definitely."Ciganda sealed the win with a 4-and-2 victory over Jennifer Kupcho, who sank a 93-foot putt to upend Ciganda on Saturday."I think it's been one of the best teams that we've had in the last few years," Ciganda said. "Everyone is just a unit, a team. That's what Europe is about."The teams were locked in an 8-8 tie before Europe bolted out of the blocks by winning six of Sunday's first eight matches, save for Alison Lee rallying from four down after 11 holes to notch a 1 up win over Esther Henseleit.That represented the biggest comeback in a singles competition in Solheim Cup history."Huge," Lee said of securing the victory. "I definitely kept an eye on the leaderboard the whole round. I did see a lot of blue up there, but I just did the best I can to change mine red and thankfully I was able to pull it off." 

Captain Angela Stanford said it was too early to say whether she would have done anything differently in the wake of the United States' 15-13 loss to Team Europe in the 2026 Solheim Cup.The teams entered Sunday tied 8-8 after the first two days of competition. The Europeans raced out to an early lead in the Sunday singles matches and went on to win seven of the 12 to secure the Cup. The U.S. has not won the event on foreign soil since 2015 in Germany.Stanford was asked whether she would have approached Sunday any differently in hindsight."I haven't really processed everything so far. But right now I mean, no, that's not who I am," Stanford said. "I try not to have regrets. I believed in all 12, so, you know, I probably need to think about that some more."Among the question marks entering the event was the status of Angel Yin, who lost 35 pounds this summer while battling a stomach illness. She returned to the LPGA Tour for the FM Championship late last month but missed the cut.Yin insisted she was fit enough to compete, but finished the Solheim Cup at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands with an 0-1-1 record. That included a 4&3 loss on Sunday against Sweden's Linn Grant, when they were the third singles match out on the course. MISSED EIGHT CONSECUTIVE CUTSThe U.S. brought Lilia Vu to the Netherlands as an alternate, but the former world No. 1 had missed eight consecutive cuts."I think we did the best we could," Stanford said. "We were prepared if Angel couldn't play. We wanted to see what we had with Angel, and she went out and got a half a point with Yealimi (Noh). Yealimi was a stud this week. And I needed to get Andrea (Lee) with Yealimi. So I wouldn't have done anything different there."By the time Rose Zhang defeated France's Celine Boutier in the final match Sunday, the Americans' fate had already been sealed with England's Lottie Woad and Spain's Carlota Ciganda winning their matches."You hear people say over and over and over how difficult it is, and it really is," Stanford said while Zhang's match was still going. "I think that we did a lot of things right leading up to it, and I know we did," she added."They fought hard, and we seemed to always be on the same page. Look, the Europeans played great today, and that's the way it goes. So their backs were against the wall, they had nothing to lose, and that's exactly what they did. They came out and played well, so good for them."In addition to world No. 1 Nelly Korda, the only other player on Stanford's team ranked in the top 20 entering the Solheim Cup was No. 17 Lauren Coughlin. Still, the Americans had the edge on paper with an average world ranking of 39 compared to Europe's 54.Stanford, 48, said she took the captain's role in part to help women's golf grow "just a little bit more." While she enjoyed the experience, the seven- time LPGA Tour winner didn't sound as though she's ready to sign up for a repeat tour of Solheim Cup captain's duty."We have a pretty good pipeline," Stanford said. "There are a lot of captains in line on the American side, a lot of good ones coming."So, yeah, I think we have a lot lined up ready to go."  

Romeo At, carrying the colours of Wathnan Racing, recorded the biggest success of his career by winning the Gr.1 (PA) UAE President Cup - UK Arabian Derby - over 2000m at Doncaster on Saturday. The race was reserved for four-year-olds and attracted a field of six runners.Trained by Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte and ridden by Tom Marquand the four-year-old Purebred Arabian colt showed plenty of courage to win at the highest level on his first start outside France.The colt had already shown good form this season, winning the Gr.3 (PA) Prix Damas over 1600m at Bordeaux on his seasonal return. He then earned two places at Gr.1 (PA) level over 2000m, including a third-place finish in the Gr.1 (PA) Doha Cup (Prix Manganate) on his latest start. The victory at Doncaster, therefore, gave Romeo At the first Gr.1 (PA) success of his career.Romeo At broke well but was immediately steadied by Tom Marquand, who initially tried to settle him behind. The colt raced quite keenly, however, and after around 200m his jockey allowed him to stride forward. Very free in the early stages, Romeo At moved into second position behind the leader Sab’Aan Al Shahania, with Laffan racing in third. The order remained mostly unchanged down the back straight, although Al Sharid moved forward to race alongside Laffan. Romeo At, meanwhile, began to settle better as the runners approached the final turn.Turning into the straight, Marquand moved Romeo At away from the leader while keeping him in second position. Sab’Aan Al Shahania was still in front, with Laffan close behind, while Al Sharid came under strong pressure and began to lose ground. Inside the final 300m, Romeo At was still travelling comfortably while the leader was already being strongly ridden. Laffan looked to be the main danger and was also still travelling well.Approaching the final 200m, Laffan came up alongside Romeo At and the pair began to pull clear of the others. Romeo At responded well when challenged and found more under pressure. Inside the final 100m, the two colts continued to fight, but Romeo At proved the stronger and stayed on gamely to win by one and a half lengths. Laffan finished second while Sab’Aan Al Shahania took third further back. 

Qatar will face Australia in an friendly at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on November 13 as the two-time defending Asian champions step up preparations for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.The Qatar Football Association announced the fixture on Thursday, with the match set to be Al Annabi's first since their appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Qatar won it's maiden Asian Cup title in 2019 and successfully defended it in 2023. They became only the fifth team to win the Asian Cup in consecutive editions, joining Iran, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Japan in achieving the feat.The 2027 Asian Cup will be hosted by Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, with Qatar drawn in Group F alongside four-time champions Japan, Thailand and Indonesia. The friendly against Australia will provide an important test for Al Annabi as they prepare to defend their continental crown.Qatar will also compete in the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup, which Saudi Arabia will host from September 23 to October 6. The Gulf Cup draw placed Qatar in Group B alongside the UAE, Bahrain and Yemen. Group A comprises hosts Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman and Kuwait.Qatar name 23-player squad for Asian GamesQatar have announced their 23-player squad for the football competition at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which gets underway on September 15. Coach Jose Angel Lacunza has selected three goalkeepers and 20 outfield players for the tournament.Goalkeepers Abubakr Mohammed, Jalal Amir and Mohammed Fawzi have been included, along with Mohammed Hani, Faisal Mohammed, Yaman Jarar, Bassam Adel, Zaid Burhan, Ali Shehabi, Al Waleed Mohammed, Atef Magdi, Jassim al-Hamad, Mohammed Ali, Muath Ibrahim, Youssef Mohammed, Nawaf al-Yahri, Tamim al-Qadi, Ziad Fadi, Qais al-Rawi, Nasser Adel, Mohammed Khaled, Marwan Sharif and Ghanem al-Menhali.Qatar have been drawn in Group D alongside South Korea and Saudi Arabia. The football competition will feature 15 teams divided into four groups, with Group D consisting of three teams while the other groups have four each.The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. The tournament will then continue in a knockout format through to the final and third-place play-off. The football competition begins on September 15, four days before the official opening ceremony of the Asian Games on September 19. The Games run until October 4. 

HE Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Vice Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, participated in the Women in Basketball Forum, hosted by FIBA, in the German capital Berlin on Friday, bringing together leading figures, decision-makers and representatives from the sports, media and business sectors. Al-Buenain took part in a panel discussion titled “Beyond the Game: Building a Legacy for the Next Generation,” which explored future opportunities for basketball, ways to expand opportunities for women and girls in sport, and the role Qatar’s hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 can play in supporting the development of the game and creating a sustainable legacy in Qatar and across the region. During the session, al-Buenain stressed that hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 represents an opportunity that goes beyond staging a major global sporting event, contributing to the growth of the game, encouraging future generations to take up basketball and broadening participation in Qatar and across the region. He said: “Qatar 2027 is not about proving that Qatar can host another major sporting event; Qatar has already demonstrated that, repeatedly, over the past two decades. The real opportunity now is to show what happens when world-class infrastructure, experience and innovation come together, and stay together, long enough to become a lasting, mainstream legacy for basketball, for this region, and for the next generation.” He also stressed that the true measure of the tournament’s success goes beyond the event itself to what it leaves behind once the final buzzer sounds. He highlighted the importance of building on Qatar’s world-class infrastructure, experience and capabilities, and leveraging the hosting of the tournament to support the long-term development of basketball, broaden opportunities for participation, and establish a lasting legacy for the game in Qatar, across the region and for future generations. The Women in Basketball Forum explores the opportunities shaping the future of women’s basketball through a series of sessions and discussions addressing key drivers of growth across the sports ecosystem, including investment, leadership, media, fan engagement and commercial innovation, while highlighting the growing role of women’s basketball in shaping the future of sport.

Ferran Torres, whose goal against Argentina won the World Cup for Spain in July, leads a 30-man list for the men's Ballon d'Or revealed. The 26-year-old who has since joined Paris Saint-Germain is one of six Spanish World Cup winners on the list, alongside 2024 laureate Rodri and last year's runner-up Lamine Yamal.In the women's section, three-time winner Aitana Bonmati did not make the shortlist after breaking her leg midway through the season, but her former Barcelona team-mate Alexia Putellas, the winner in 2021 and 2022 and now a London City Lionesses player, is there.Torres also won La Liga with Barcelona in May but is now teaming up with last year's Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele at PSG. France international Dembele is one of nine PSG team-mates on the list to have won the Champions League in each of the last two years.With Torres having joined the club, that makes it 10 current PSG players in total on the list. Among them, Fabian Ruiz is the only player to have won the Champions League and World Cup in 2026.Flying Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was one of the stars of PSG's successful Champions League defence, alongside Portuguese midfield pair Vitinha and Joao Neves, and all three are nominated.Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi received his 17th nomination, but his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo did not make the cut this time. Messi helped inspire an ill-disciplined Argentina to the World Cup final, where they took almost 120 minutes to muster their first shot against Spain in a one-sided final.England captain Harry Kane, who won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, is included as is his French team-mate and wing wizard Michael Olise. Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham earned his nomination with an impressive World Cup for England, scoring seven goals – matching Erling Haaland's tally and beaten only by Messi (eight) and Kylian Mbappe, on 10.Mbappe is there, after becoming the first player to win the World Cup golden boot a second time, while also scorching to the top of the tournament's all-time record scorer list. Yamal is also nominated in for the Young Talent award, which he has won the last two years. Vozinha, the 40-year-old who was one of the heroes of Cape Verde's fairytale World Cup run, has made the goalkeeper list.Barcelona will also have a handful of contenders for the women's award. Putellas is one of seven players who won the women's Champions League with the club in May to be on the list, including Poland's Ewa Pajor, who scored a brace in the 4-0 final victory over Lyon. Three of the men's nominees play outside Europe. Messi is a MLS franchise Inter Miami and Sadio Mane and Julian Quinones play in Saudi Arabia.The women's award spreads its net a little wider. Zambian Barbra Banda, who plays for Orlando Pride in South Africa, Mexican Scarlett Camberos who plays in her native country and Malawian Temwa Chawinga amd American Rose Lavelle, who play in the NWSL, on the list.The winners will be announced in a ceremony at the London Palladium Theatre on October 26. 

Chinese teenage basketball player Zhang Ziyu stands 223cm (7ft 4in) and towers over opponents at the Women's World Cup -- but off the court she's "just a little girl".That was the assessment of the giant 19-year-old by team-mate Han Xu after China's 74-70 overtime win over the Czech Republic on Sunday in Germany.The teenage centre scored three points in just over 10 minutes on court against a physical Czech side, having been more of a threat against reigning champions the United States in a 94-61 loss to start the tournament.After that defeat, USA superstar Caitlin Clark had warm words for Zhang, saying: "I've never played against a woman of that size and she obviously presented some challenges for us."I think she's a wonderful player and you see how young she is."You can tell she's still growing and learning how to play and how to leverage her advantage, which is her size."There's not much you can do to stop her when she gets it really close to the basket."Zhang's height is listed at 223cm on the website of world governing body FIBA, making her already taller than NBA great Shaquille O'Neal, and even in a sport where height matters, she stands out in women's basketball. ZHANG MIGHT BE DESTINED FOR WNBAZhang might be destined for the WNBA, but Clark and Han warned against placing too many expectations on the teenager."In life she's just a little girl," said Han, who top-scored for China with 22 points against the Czechs."I always want to give her good energy... she can finish to the rim and protect the paint."I think she is a great player and we just keep thinking (about) how to use her better and hope she can be more aggressive."The official website for the Women's Basketball World Cup describes Zhang as "epically tall", noting she first came to international prominence when she was crowned MVP at the U18 Women's Asia Cup two years ago.Footage and images of Zhang looming over her opponents have gone viral online, but Clark said there was more to her than just that."She's still a very young player, but to be this young and to be in a World Cup and to go up against the top players is only going to help her continue to grow," said Clark."So I think if she continues to develop, then there's definitely a place for her." 

England paceman Jofra Archer believes he is now in a "good place" after a succession of career-threatening injuries but said there had been some benefits from lengthy spells on the sidelines.Barbados-born Archer arrived in the UK in 2015 and four years later he was the spearhead of England's attack in their dramatic World Cup final triumph at Lord's, as well as starring in the 2019 Ashes.But he started to develop an elbow problem later that year, with England captain Joe Root widely criticised for over-bowling the Sussex quick in New Zealand.Elbow and back injuries sidelined Archer from Test duty for more than four years, from February 2021 to July 2025.But the 31-year-old, who plays in all international formats, said there were some positives from his enforced absences."The time when I was injured, I really got away from cricket," he told the BBC on Monday. "It's all been a blur. I didn't realise how long the time out was, either."I got to spend some time at home (in Barbados), because, moving over (to the UK), I never really got more than a couple of weeks. To spend a month here and there, it was really nice."He added: "I'd be lying if I didn't say I had a good time away from everything. Now, everything is really nice. My body is in a good place, the team is in a good place and everyone is in a good place. I just want to play cricket."Archer is aiming to help England complete a 3-0 whitewash of Pakistan at Edgbaston this week after featuring in crushing wins over the tourists in the first two Tests, at Headingley and Lord's.The express bowler has been part of an impressive pace attack also featuring Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson that has started to draw comparisons with the celebrated "Fab Four" of Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison, Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff, who helped England win the 2005 Ashes. 

India's batting superstar Smriti Mandhana has become the leading run-scorer in women's international cricket after smashing a record-breaking 124 off 64 balls in the Women's Asia Cup in Dubai.Mandhana overtook former India skipper Mithali Raj, who had been the top international scorer with 10,868 international runs, during her match-winning innings against Hong Kong on Thursday.It also sealed India's place in the semi-finals of the T20 tournament.The 30-year-old also became the leading century-maker in women's international cricket, with 18 hundreds across formats, overtaking Australia's Meg Lanning and South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt, who have 17 each."It's just the start," the India vice-captain said after the game.Mandhana has two centuries each in Tests and T20Is, and 14 in one-day internationals."Until I was batting, I didn't know what record, because I didn't know what's the exact runs," Mandhana said, according to Indian sports outlet Sportstar."A very good day for Indian cricket, I would say," she added.She also heaped praise on Mithali Raj as a "legend and a role model".Mandhana's knock featured 14 fours and seven sixes as India piled up 193-5 before bowling out Hong Kong for 56 to secure a 137-run victory. 

Geoff Ogilvy used half of his captain's picks on Tuesday to add Presidents Cup rookies Nick Taylor, Nico Echavarria and Ryo Hisatsune to an International Team that will look to snap a lengthy losing streak against a stacked U.S. squad that added some major heft.Ogilvy also named Canadian Corey Conners, South Korea's Sungjae Im and South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout to his 12-player team who will seek to avoid an 11th consecutive loss to the United States when they meet from September 24-27 in Chicago.A U.S. team that already included six players inside the top 11 of the world rankings was bolstered with the addition of some major champions as Brandt Snedeker named Justin Thomas and world number 10 Xander Schauffele among his six captain's picks.Snedeker also selected Patrick Cantlay and Presidents Cup rookies Chris Gotterup, Jacob Bridgeman and Jackson Koivun.The 2026 edition of the Presidents Cup, a biennial event that pits a U.S. team against a lineup of international players from outside Europe, will be held at Medinah Country Club's Course No. 3 and the competition will begin with five fourball matches on the opening day.The U.S. are 13-1-1 in the Ryder Cup-style competition with their only loss coming at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 1998. AUTOMATIC BERTHS ON THE U.S. TEAMWorld number one Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Russell Henley and Collin Morikawa all previously clinched automatic berths on the U.S. team."You look to your best players to kind of pull the cart for you and go out there and lead the charge. And so we're very fortunate on our side," said Snedeker."We have a bunch of great guys in the team room, guys who love to lead, guys who lead by example, guys who lead by being vocal, and they're all bought in."The six automatic spots on the International Team were filled by Kim Si-woo (South Korea), Ryan Fox (New Zealand), Hideki Matsuyama (Japan), Min Woo Lee (Australia), Tom Kim (South Korea) and Adam Scott (Australia).Ogilvy, who has served as a captain's assistant in four previous Presidents Cups, feels his team have the perfect balance and he is looking forward to the challenge that awaits at Medinah."I don't think I've had 12 guys more enthusiastic and more energetic at this point of the tournament than we have this time," said Ogilvy. 

The Gulf Football Federation (GFF) on Wednesday signed of a strategic partnership agreement with Al Nasr Trading Company, to be the official partner of the Gulf Cup 27, which will be hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from September 23 to October 6, 2026, as part of the ongoing cooperation between the two sides and in support of the progress of Gulf football.The signing ceremony, which took place at the headquarters of the GFF in Doha, was attended by Jassim Sultan al-Rumaihi, Secretary General of GFF, along with Yousef Faisal al-Rashid, CEO of Al-Nasr Trading Company, and a number of federation officials and company executives.On this occasion, al-Rumaihi said: “We are proud of this partnership with one of the leading commercial companies, which has demonstrated over the past years a clear commitment to supporting the Gulf Federation’s tournaments and various events. This partnership is based on mutual trust and common goals, and it confirms the Gulf Federation’s keenness to continue attracting leading brands and enhancing the commercial sponsorship system and the marketing value of its tournaments.”He added: “The joining of Al-Nasr Company to the sponsors of the Gulf Cup 27 is an important addition, and we look forward to building on the success, interest and enthusiasm achieved in the Gulf Cup tournaments, which will reflect positively on the outputs of Gulf football.”For his part, al-Rashid said: “We are proud to continue our partnership with the Gulf Football Federation, which reflects Al-Nasr Company’s commitment to supporting Gulf sports and contributing to the development of the sports scene in the region. Sponsoring Gulf Cup 27 represents an extension of our vision to support tournaments and events that bring together the people of the Gulf and enhance the spirit of competition and communication among them.”He added: “We believe in the importance of sports as a platform that brings together fans and strengthens communication between the peoples of the region, and through this partnership we look forward to continuing to support the Gulf championships and contributing to their success and consolidating their position as one of the most prominent sporting events in the region.”The new agreement is an extension of the successful cooperation that has brought the two sides together over the past two years, as Al Nasr continues to sponsor the most prominent Gulf football competitions, thus enhancing its presence in the sporting events organized by the Federation.The GFF looks forward to continuing its fruitful partnership with Al Nasr Company, which will contribute to the advancement of Gulf football and build on the successes achieved by the Gulf Cup throughout its history.In this regard, Abdullah al-Shaib, Regional Marketing Director at Al-Nasr Trading Company, said: “Through this sponsorship, we seek to enhance Al-Nasr’s presence in the most prominent Gulf sporting events, and to communicate more closely with football fans in the region, reflecting our future directions and our keenness to support Gulf sports.”The Gulf Cup 27 tournament will be held at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium and Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium, in the first edition of the prestigious Gulf event to be held in Jeddah.The transfer of the tournament from the Arabian Gulf to the Red Sea through Jeddah’s hosting of “Gulf Cup 27” gives a new dimension and a different experience that reflects the diversity of Saudi cities and their ability to organize major sporting tournaments, in addition to the fact that the tournament is one of the most closely associated sporting events with the conscience of the peoples of the region.
