Qatar’s schools reopen today for 419,373 students, with six new public schools adding 3,600 seats, 3,000 buses on the road and 14,561 subsidised places on offer across 649 public and private schools and kindergartens.  The Ministry of Education and Higher Education said academic, administrative and operational preparations for the 2026-2027 academic year have been completed to ensure an organised and effective start.  The Cabinet praised the ministry’s readiness, pointing to continued gains in the education sector — particularly work to raise the efficiency of teaching staff, strengthen curricula and expand high-quality education in step with scientific and technological developments.  The six new public schools cover different educational stages and are spread across several areas of the country. Maintenance and renovation works have been completed at existing public schools.  Public schools and kindergartens have 17,679 teachers; private schools and kindergartens employ 25,372 teachers and administrators. To fill teaching vacancies, 210 teachers have been appointed from the Tamouh programme, run by the ministry in co-operation with Qatar University’s College of Education.  The annual educational meeting included more than 15 training workshops on educational practices, teaching methods and performance development. The ministry also honoured participants in the Qiyadat, Tamheen and Bedaya Mwafqa programmes. Approved training programmes will continue through the year via the Training and Development Centre.  In the private sector, 156 nurseries are operating, with seven more undergoing licensing and expected to open during the academic year. A further 81 nurseries serve children with disabilities in mild cases requiring integration.  The 14,561 seats made available through the private schools’ social responsibility initiative include free and reduced-fee places as well as seats supported through the educational voucher system, widening choice for students.  School transport has been reinforced with 3,000 buses of different sizes, alongside 122 buses and 400 cars allocated to students with disabilities.  On health and safety, the ministry has approved 26 food companies to supply government-school canteens and drawn up a list of food items meeting approved health standards. Schools have completed security and safety requirements and strengthened air-conditioning and cooling services.  Class schedules and student allocations have been finalised, and textbooks and educational supplies made available. Orientation sessions were held for new employees on ministry policies, plans and regulations.  Administrative and teaching staff began their duties on August 23, giving schools time to complete final preparations before students return. 

 Qatar Charity (QC) has announced that it will launch an urgent humanitarian response and distribute blankets to people affected by the devastating floods that struck Nepal on Wednesday.Immediately after the floods, the QC activated its Emergency Response Cell within the Humanitarian Operations Department.  Meanwhile, its Crisis and Information Centre continues to closely monitor the evolving humanitarian situation.  Qatar Charity remains in direct and continuous contact with its field office in Nepal to assess urgent humanitarian needs, based on the office’s co-ordination meetings with the relevant Nepalese authorities and its monitoring of humanitarian response efforts in the affected areas.  The most urgent life-saving humanitarian needs of flood-affected people in Nepal include ready-to-eat hot meals, mattresses and blankets, emergency health care, infant formula, and emergency shelter.  Reports issued by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on Thursday, indicated that 10,000 families required urgent humanitarian assistance.According to the reports, 165 bodies have been recovered, 247 people remained missing, and 73 people were injured.  The floods also caused extensive damage to infrastructure, destroying 35 motorable bridges and 45 suspension bridges and damaging at least 40km of paved roads.The authority said that heavy rainfall and difficult terrain were hampering search and rescue operations.  The US Geological Survey described the event as a debris avalanche and flash flood, likely triggered by a rapid slope failure involving a glacier.It also noted that a second seismic event was recorded approximately three hours later. 

 The local retail sector is seeing a strong seasonal boost as families step up spending on school uniforms, bags, stationery and electronic devices ahead of the start of the new academic year. Bookshops, shopping centres and retailers have reported increased footfall over the recent days, as parents seek to complete their children’s school requirements before classes begin.Many families have accompanied their children to the market to choose their bags, stationery colours and designs, adding to the lively atmosphere across retail outlets.  Some sales representatives said the final days of the summer holiday have brought a noticeable increase in demand, making the back-to-school period one of the key retail seasons of the year.A wide range of products at different price points, combined with local and imported options, is helping retailers attract consumers across different budget segments.  School uniforms are among the most sought-after products, with retailers expanding dedicated sections offering approved colours and sizes, alongside school shoes and sportswear.Some stores are also promoting multi-item packages and seasonal discounts to encourage larger purchases.It has been noticed that many parents are increasingly looking for uniforms that balance quality, comfort and durability, particularly given the high temperatures during the early months of the academic year.  Lightweight and breathable fabrics are therefore attracting considerable interest.  School bags are another major sales category, with retailers offering extensive collections featuring contemporary designs and popular characters, superheroes and football stars.Lightweight and durable models with multiple compartments are particularly popular, as parents look for practical designs that can accommodate books, notebooks and school supplies without placing excessive weight on students.  Meanwhile, promotional bundles have been enhancing sales, with some retailers offering free lunch boxes or water bottles with selected bags. Such offers can reduce the overall cost of purchasing school essentials separately and provide an additional incentive for families. Stationery has also recorded strong demand, covering notebooks, pens, pencils, colours, rulers, erasers, sharpeners and cases for organising school supplies.Notebooks remained among the strongest-selling items in spite of introducing more digital tools to learning.  A high-quality 80-page notebook is priced at around QR12, while a pack of 12 60-page notebooks is available for approximately QR14, bringing the cost per notebook to around QR1.50.However, the growing role of technology in education is reshaping back-to-school spending. Retailers are promoting tablets, laptops and printers, with instalment plans and buy-now-pay-later services helping families spread the cost of larger purchases. Some companies are also offering educational bundles that combine devices with software and learning applications. Educational games that blend learning with entertainment are another emerging category, reflecting the increasing use of digital tools to support students’ skills and engagement. The expansion of technology-related purchases is giving retailers an additional revenue stream during the traditionally busy back-to-school period, while payment plans are making higher-value products more accessible to households managing multiple school-related expenses. 

 Qatar Museums (QM) has opened applications for “Conventions 101”, an October 2026 workshop series introducing Unesco’s cultural conventions and their role in safeguarding heritage for future generations. Organised through the Doha Empower Programme, the series is aimed at university students and young professionals interested in culture and heritage, with applications closing on September 10. The three interactive workshops will examine cultural property protection, world heritage and intangible cultural heritage through practical exercises, simulations, debates and group activities.The programme is organised by the QM’s International Co-operation and Government Affairs Department in partnership with the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science and the Unesco Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen. Sessions will be held on October 13, 14 and 29 from 8.30am to 1pm. Qatar residents may apply for a limited number of in-person places, while applicants across the wider Arab world may participate by livestream. Applicants must register in advance through the official application form linked in Qatar Museums’s LinkedIn announcement. Selected participants from Qatar and the broader Arab region will be invited to attend and contribute to the Youth Empowerment Forum 2027 in Doha. 

Qatar will participate in the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 with a delegation of 243 athletes, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) announced on Saturday.The delegation comprises 184 men and 59 women, along with 142 members of the technical and administrative staff. Qatar will compete in 26 sports and 32 disciplines at the Games, which will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4.The Qatari athletes will compete in athletics, football, basketball, 3x3 basketball, handball, volleyball, beach volleyball, squash, padel, taekwondo, judo, artistic gymnastics, golf, shooting, swimming, jiu-jitsu, esports, sailing, equestrian, karate, fencing, archery, wrestling, boxing, weightlifting and table tennis.The QOC also announced the launch of the Mirqab platform, which will serve as a central hub for news, updates, information and services related to Qatar’s participation in the Games. It also revealed plans for ‘Qatar House’, a dedicated venue that will promote Qatari culture and provide a meeting point for delegations and the public throughout the Games. The Aichi-Nagoya Games will also serve as an important preparation for Qatar’s hosting of the Asian Games in Doha in 2030. **media[485531]**Ahmed Yousef al-Darwish, head of Qatar’s administrative delegation, said preparations had been carried out thoroughly and began immediately after the conclusion of the previous edition in Hangzhou, China. “A large working group has been formed to follow up on all aspects of Qatar’s participation in coordination with the sports federations, with the aim of providing the best possible conditions for the athletes and delegations,” al-Darwish said.“Our main goal is to ensure that Qatar is represented in an honourable manner. With the conclusion of these Games, attention will turn to Doha, which will host the next edition in 2030. Therefore, Aichi-Nagoya is an important milestone not only from a sporting perspective but also in preparing for our own hosting.”The Aichi-Nagoya Games will feature 41 sports, 68 disciplines and 460 events across 53 competition venues and 75 training facilities. Al-Darwish highlighted the growing role of women in Qatari sport, noting that female athletes account for about 31 percent of the country’s participating athletes. He described the figure as a positive indicator of the continued development of women’s sport and their growing presence across different disciplines.Iman al-Emadi, deputy head of the administrative delegation, said the team had been working closely with all participating sports federations to complete logistical arrangements and ensure the athletes have the necessary facilities and equipment. She also stressed the importance of women’s participation and expressed hope that the Qatari female athletes would contribute to the medal tally and proudly represent the country.Abdullah Mohammed al-Marri, head of the media delegation, described the Games as a significant milestone and a final test for Qatar ahead of the 2030 Asian Games in Doha. He said the event would provide Qatari athletes with valuable opportunities to compete against Asia’s best and measure their progress while challenging for medals.Al-Marri said ‘Qatar House’ would open on September 19 and remain operational until the closing of the Games on October 4. The venue will showcase Qatar’s culture and achievements and provide a platform for interaction with visiting delegations and the public. It will also host celebrations honouring Qatari athletes who achieve notable results during the Games.Naji al-Omari, a member of the administrative delegation, said preparations had focused on ensuring the mission was fully equipped, including accommodation, transportation and other logistical requirements. “The objective is to create the right environment for the athletes so they can concentrate fully on their competitions, perform at their best and achieve the desired results,” he said.

Qatar recorded a 559% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to $3bn in 2025, up from $0.5bn in 2024, placing the country among the top three destinations in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on a per-capita basis.“If we look at individual member states, we see that if we're looking at total numbers, the UAE is leading, followed by Saudi Arabia, Oman, and then Qatar. These are aggregate values. If we were to adjust them on a per capita basis, Qatar would be in the top three,” according to Dr Vincent Beyer, legal officer, Investment Policy and Agreements at the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Beyer presented the figures by during a recent press briefing in Doha highlighting key data from the World Investment Report 2026.Globally, FDI flows grew 6% in 2025, moving from $1.5tn to $1.6tn. However, capital allocation has grown increasingly concentrated across specific geographies and industrial sectors, according to Beyer.Within the GCC, Beyer noted that total capital inflow expanded substantially over the past decade. The region secured 6% of global FDI in 2025, up from 1% in 2015, representing a six-fold increase in market share.Data shared by Beyer showed that total FDI inflows to the GCC reached $98.5bn in 2025. The UAE attracted $48.2bn, Saudi Arabia recorded $32.6bn, Oman secured $13.3bn, Qatar received $3bn, Bahrain registered $0.8bn, and Kuwait stood at $0.5bn.Sectoral data for greenfield investments in the GCC indicates a swift rebalancing toward digital infrastructure, Beyer reported. Between 2021 and 2025, he said greenfield announcements in information and communication technologies (ICT) rose to $44bn, climbing close to the $45bn directed into energy and gas supply. Extractive industries recorded $33bn, automotive projects garnered $24bn, and construction brought in $22bn over the same period, Beyer also said.“If we're looking at Qatar specifically, the three sectors that drove the FDI numbers in Qatar are chemicals, energy, and then ICT investment,” Beyer explained.Beyer noted that government strategies globally have adjusted to attract specialised projects. Selective incentives now constitute 50% of targeted investment policy measures worldwide, while national screening mechanisms for foreign capital increased from 21 countries in 2016 to 52 in 2025, he said.Capital commitment globally remains heavily focused on five strategic fields: advanced technologies, critical minerals, energy transition, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. These sectors accounted for 44% of global FDI flows in 2025, up from 16% in 2020, Beyer pointed out.Beyer observed that top donor countries generate nearly three-quarters of investments in these strategic fields, while the top three receiving nations capture over half of all commitments.

Recent policy measures to expand Qatar’s startup ecosystem are attracting international technology companies, with founders leveraging new setup pathways while pushing for more accessible early-stage grant funding.  “Being here made us look at the GCC market more closely. We saw limited options for businesses looking for affordable and flexible cloud infrastructure and felt this was a problem we could help solve.  “So, Qatar became more than just another market for us. We saw it as a strategic base to serve the wider GCC and eventually the world,” CloudZigo founder and managing director Abdul Sakhib Mohammed told Gulf Times. The cloud infrastructure firm, which established its operations in Doha following Web Summit Qatar 2026, represents a growing wave of foreign ventures shifting regional bases to the country.  “That’s how we eventually got invited to Web Summit Qatar 2026, which was my first real introduction to Qatar...Our goal was never to build a company just for Qatar but to build from Qatar for the world,” Mohammed explained.  The company, incubated at Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), points to regulatory reforms, 100% foreign ownership options, and streamlined licensing via the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s (MoCI) Single Window as key operational enablers.  “The availability of 100% foreign ownership for eligible businesses and the Qatar Financial Centre’s streamlined setup and licensing have made things much easier, although the cost can be a consideration for early-stage companies. MoCI’s Single Window is also very helpful,” he pointed out.  According to Mohammed, incubation within QSTP provided the firm with structured access to local corporate networks and state-backed entities, strengthening its commercial trajectory in the Gulf region.  “The biggest change was that we no longer felt like we had to figure everything out alone. We already had a functioning business, customers, and a team, so QSTP didn’t change our foundation; it strengthened it. The biggest value was access to mentors, networks, Qatar Foundation, corporates, and the wider ecosystem,” he emphasised.Government initiatives announced at Web Summit Qatar, including the expansion of the Qatar Investment Authority’s Fund of Funds programme to $3bn and new 10-year residency tracks, have bolstered international interest in the domestic market.  “Some benefits have already touched us: registration and setup incentives, tax benefits, and I’ve also applied for the new Entrepreneur Ruby Residency and am currently waiting for approval,” noted Mohammed.  However, founders note that the next critical phase for the local ecosystem lies in translating high-level policy announcements into accessible direct funding for early-stage ventures, stated Mohammed, noting that while top-tier announcements build ecosystem momentum, practical execution on the ground remains the true test of policy effectiveness.  He pointed out that while CloudZigo generates revenue, many incoming entrepreneurs operate pre-revenue startups that require patient capital to establish proof of concept.Mohammed urged regional investors to adopt a broader risk appetite, noting that early-stage ventures cannot always present fully proven financial metrics on day one. “I’d also like to see investors take a little more calculated risk with early-stage founders, rather than expecting everything to be proven from day one,” he emphasised.  He noted that extending practical assistance, such as Qatar Development Bank’s four-week housing allowance, could significantly ease the cost burden on incoming entrepreneurs during their initial setup phase.  Mohammed said he expects the influx of international founders to accelerate as Qatar carves out its distinct position alongside established regional markets. 

Runners raced through Aspire Dome and its basement in Qatar’s newest indoor challenge, completing five extended laps within 30 minutes at the inaugural “Run the Dome 2026” event this weekend.Organised by the Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) on August 28-29, the first edition combined community fitness with a competitive speed-race format inside the air-conditioned venue.A dedicated women’s race opened the programme on Friday morning, followed by open races later in the day and yesterday, with the top finishers awarded on the final day.Ahmed Mohammed al-Hassan, championship director and executive director of facilities and events at the AZF, said the event was created to introduce a different type of race to Qatar while serving both recreational runners and more experienced athletes.“For us, it is very important to have new events in Aspire and in Qatar overall, covering the needs of the community and professionals at the same time,” he told *Gulf Times.The central challenge was not only speed, but the course itself.Aspire Dome’s standard international athletics track measures 200m, so organisers extended the route into the building’s basement to create a 1km lap.“Designing the track to be safe and extending it to 1km for each lap was a big job,” he said. “We wanted to give participants a different atmosphere and experience.”Competitors were required to complete five laps, covering close to 5km, within a 30-minute target.Al-Hassan described the format as a departure from conventional mass-participation road races, where families, children and runners of different abilities usually share the same course.“This kind of race is different. It is a challenge race,” he said. “You can run the five laps within 30 minutes. That is the challenge.”The event was open to participants aged 18 and above, with categories including runners over 50.Faster competitors who had demonstrated a sub-20-minute time over 5km were grouped separately and scheduled later, helping preserve the competitive pace of the event.Al-Hassan said most runners completed the course within the target, while those finishing later had already gained a goal for a future edition.“That is the challenge for them for next time and what makes them passionate to join us again,” he said.Aspire Dome was selected to give runners a safe, climate-controlled option during Qatar’s summer.Al-Hassan said the AZF plans to hold the race every summer, while feedback requesting categories for children and families will be considered.“Aspire’s vision is to support the community and sport, including health,” he said. “That is why we try to create different events that cover the community’s needs.”
