Paris St Germain's Champions League celebrations after beating Barcelona turned to dismay when the club confirmed on Wednesday that winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will require knee surgery, likely ending his season in a devastating blow to the champions.Kvaratskhelia twisted his right knee during Tuesday's 4-2 victory over Barcelona and had to be helped off the pitch shortly before the hour mark, with the Georgian winger unable to bear weight on his leg.The injury robs PSG of last season's best player in the competition as they sit top of this year's standings with a perfect record of three wins from three games as they seek a third straight title."Before every game I asked God to let me leave the pitch healthy. But it was in vain," Kvaratskhelia wrote on Instagram."Not much time has passed, yet one thought keeps circling in my head: why me? I never held anything back. I think I prepared for this game better than I ever had before. I thought I was ready for everything - but not for this."I know I have to come back stronger for my people, who are always by my side. I won't let you down - I promise I won't waste a single moment."ACL injuries typically require a recovery period of at least six months.The 25-year-old scored 10 goals and provided six assists as PSG defended their European crown last season, with his form also earning him a spot on the shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. DEMBELE AND MARQUINHOS ALSO INJUREDTuesday's win came at a heavy cost for PSG with reigning Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele limping off in the 19th minute with a thigh injury, while defender Marquinhos also came off with a similar problem.Dembele's injury is another blow after the Frenchman began the season with four goals and six assists in all competitions.PSG said both Dembele and Marquinhos will remain under treatment for the next few weeks.Luis Enrique's side are second in Ligue 1 and next play on Sunday against table toppers Olympique Lyonnais, who are ahead on goal difference. 

Next week the winner of the most prestigious individual award in football will be announced at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, and some of the leading contenders for the prize will be on the same pitch on Tuesday when Paris Saint-Germain host Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.In the home camp, there is a remarkable total of 10 players among the 30 nominees, including last year's laureate Ousmane Dembele.Facing up to them, Barcelona have three of their own candidates, with last year's runner-up Lamine Yamal and 2024 winner Rodri along with defender Pau Cubarsi, another member of Spain's triumphant World Cup side.The battle for the Ballon d'Or gives an edge to this game that might otherwise be lacking, given the relatively limited stakes for these two powerhouses in the new league phase format of Europe's elite club competition.The individual prize to recognise the standout player of each season does not carry the same weight or significance everywhere, but it is a major talking point in France -- it was created by France Football magazine in the 1950s -- and in Spain where Barcelona and Real Madrid campaign loudly for their candidates.In Madrid they are backing Kylian Mbappe. He has been making his own case in public, as has Yamal, the 19-year-old winger who starred as Barcelona won La Liga and then won the World Cup with Spain."I think all those who watch football understand the argument in my favour. I go out onto the pitch, I have fun, and I play well," Yamal told French sports daily L'Equipe recently."Fortunately I have also won a lot of titles with Barca and in addition to that I won the most important title of all, the World Cup."But beyond that I think my way of playing is my strongest argument and what makes me different."The voting by a jury of journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings is only based on last season, but Yamal has already made a formidable start to this campaign and scored a stunning goal in Barcelona's 5-2 weekend win at Betis in La Liga.Not that PSG, who are going for a third consecutive Champions League title this season, are scared of him."I wouldn't say we are afraid," insisted PSG midfielder Vitinha on Monday."He is one of the best players in the world. What he does is incredible. He is exceptional. It is always interesting to play against these types of players, but not just him. We are facing a great team, not only Lamine." NO OBVIOUS CANDIDATE? Vitinha, the 26-year-old Portuguese playmaker, came third in the 2025 Ballon d'Or ranking.Dembele won it last year off the back of an extraordinary season in which he scored 35 goals in all competitions and helped inspire PSG to their first ever Champions League title.Last season was less exceptional, even if he still found the net 20 times including in the Champions League final against Arsenal, and the 29-year-old France star has been making his case in the media too."I have never been the chosen one, but I worked hard and last year I was rewarded for a fantastic year," he said in response to comments by Mbappe in relation to the Ballon d'Or."This year we will see, but there is no pressure. I'm easy."PSG might be the outstanding club team just now, but their problem could be the lack of one obvious candidate.Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was surely the best player in last season's Champions League, but the Georgian winger did not go to the World Cup.Fabian Ruiz is in the unique position of having won the Champions League and World Cup, but lacks the real superstar pedigree.Ferran Torres swapped Barca for PSG after scoring the only goal in the World Cup final, yet is not seen as a realistic Ballon d'Or winner."I have big respect for both Kylian and Yamal. They are amazing players," said PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi recently."But I would go for sure for my players. We have three players: Dembele, 'Kvara' and also Fabian Ruiz, who is the only one to have won all the trophies. They deserve it."

Paris St Germain coach Luis Enrique gambled with a much-changed starting lineup and was almost made to pay as the Ligue 1 champions rode their luck to claim a 3-1 victory at RC Strasbourg on Saturday.Gio Reyna put the home side ahead in the first half and they might have added to that tally but for the brilliance of PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.Ousmane Dembele missed a penalty for the visitors in the second half but minutes later they were level through Ilya Zabarnyi before Dembele scored five minutes from the end of the 90 and Desire Doue added a third in added time.The win moves PSG top of the table on 14 points from seven games, ahead of second-placed AS Monaco on goals scored before the principality side visit Lorient on Sunday.Strasbourg are in 12th place with seven points. ENRIQUE MAKES EIGHT CHANGESLuis Enrique made eight changes to his team from the midweek Champions League win at Manchester City with only Safonov, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Maghnes Akliouche selected again.Strasbourg opened the scoring after 17 minutes when Reyna found space in the box and his shot took a deflection off PSG defender Lucas Hernandez and squeezed in at the near post.Safonov made an excellent save low to his left from Conrad Harder's header, and then repeated the feat to deny the striker from a fierce angled drive as he pushed the ball onto the post.PSG were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes remaining following a handball by Pape Demba Diop but Dembele put his low shot wide of the left-hand post.The tide had swung in favour of the visitors though as they brought the cavalry off the bench and Dembele atoned for his missed spot-kick with a superb cross that was side-footed into the net by the unlikely figure of defender Zabarnyi.Dembele used his quick feet on the edge of the box to create a shooting chance and buried the ball low into the net before Doue was given too much space at the back post and sealed the win.

Europe's car industry fought back against rising Chinese competition at the Paris car show on Monday with a wave of new model launches and fresh support from Brussels, even as Chinese automakers expanded their push into the region.The show opened days after the European Union announced a deal with China to curb imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles into the bloc, with a cap of 350,000 a year, according to a European Commission official. While details of the arrangement have yet to be finalised, it was welcomed by European manufacturers.The flood of Chinese hybrid imports into the EU is "not sustainable" for Europe, Renault CEO Francois Provost said, describing the agreement as "better than a trade war".China's Leapmotor International said it needed to understand how the cap would work in practice, but that it was an "interesting alternative to tariffs".Around 20 Chinese brands, including BYD and Chery, are attending the show, double their presence in 2024 as they seek growth overseas amid intense competition and weaker demand at home.Chinese brands have gained share rapidly in Europe over the last three years, while Chinese exports of hybrids to the EU's 27-member states tripled to $7.5bn in the first half of this year, according to Chinese customs.The EU-China deal could hit BYD, Chery and state-owned SAIC's MG brand hardest as between them they accounted for 90% of Chinese brand hybrid sales in the EU in the first eight months of 2026, Jefferies analysts said on Sunday.Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume welcomed progress in EU-China talks, saying on Sunday that companies selling cars in Europe should compete under comparable conditions and create jobs and value in the region.The German carmaker said on Monday its deliveries fell 14.3% in the third quarter, the steepest quarterly drop in four years, dragged down by a further decline in demand in its top market, China. Deliveries also fell in North America and Western Europe.As part of its efforts to regain market share in Europe, Stellantis is launching six new models across its European brands at the show and unveiling nine concept cars, marking a significant expansion of its presence at the show.On Sunday evening, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa hailed "the reinvention of a European icon" as he unveiled an affordable retro electric version of Citroen's 2CV.The company is also adopting faster Chinese-style development cycles, Chief Technology Officer Ned Curic said, outlining plans to build small EVs in Italy using a platform being developed with Leapmotor.Renault's head of growth, Fabrice Cambolive, said the carmaker could increase EV production in France by at least 50% over the next 12 months.Like other Western motor shows, Paris had been in decline until Chinese automakers began turning up in force four years ago.Alongside BYD and Chery, this year's show features newer Chinese entrants including Aito, while state-owned Changan is launching its Nevo and Avatr brands in Europe.Chinese automakers also used the event to outline further European expansion plans. Changan President Zhao Fei said the company was in talks with manufacturers about producing vehicles in Europe and hoped to build its first European-made car in early 2027.BYD is studying the possibility of building a factory in France, Executive Vice President Stella Li told broadcaster BFM TV on Monday.The EU imposed tariffs on Chinese-made fully electric vehicles in October 2024. Brussels is also working on "Made in Europe" rules requiring minimum local content levels for EVs to access large parts of the bloc's market.Agreement between France and Germany on the provisions is "imminent", French President Emmanuel Macron said at the show.Chinese automakers have sought European production bases ahead of the proposed rules, often in partnership with established manufacturers.In July, China's Geely Auto said it would produce electric SUVs at a Ford Motor factory in Spain. On Sunday, Geely Auto CEO Alex Nan highlighted the company's growing partnership with Renault and its commitment to Europe.Separately, India's Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Stellantis said on Monday they had expanded their partnership to include technology and product development, with plans to build vehicles in India for more than 50 global markets.Car sales in China, the world's largest auto market, fell 20% in the first half of 2026, increasing pressure on manufacturers to expand overseas.As the US market is effectively closed to China's auto industry, Europe has become its top export priority."If they drop exports in Europe they die because they can't make the money elsewhere," said Francois Roudier, secretary general of the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers. 

Volkswagen chief Oliver Blume expects European policymakers to create the framework needed to make the German automaker's restructuring a success, he said on Sunday, amid a push by Brussels to shield industry from low-cost Chinese competitors.At an event titled "For Europe" on the eve of the Paris motor show, Blume said Volkswagen was working to reduce complexity across the company, whose brands range from mass-market VW to high-end marques like Porsche and Lamborghini, in what he called "the biggest transformation programme in our history"."This is a shared responsibility: The business community must become more competitive and create attractive opportunities, while policymakers must establish the right framework conditions," he said.The auto show in Paris comes at a critical juncture for Europe's top carmaker, which is undergoing a major restructuring and is racing to update its mass-market electric vehicle offering as Chinese competitors rapidly gain ground in Europe.Battered by an EV price war and falling sales at home, Chinese automakers are aggressively expanding into Europe.In his speech, Blume backed proposed "Made in Europe" rules to incentivise local manufacturing, and welcomed a deal between the EU and China that could cut Chinese imports of plug-in hybrid vehicles to the bloc by more than half."Those who sell here should compete under comparable conditions and create jobs and value here in Europe too," Blume said at the event, attended by France's minister for industry Sebastien Martin.Battling to implement sweeping job cuts and threatening to close up to four plants in Germany, Blume also faces pressure from investors to prove his turnaround strategy goes beyond downsizing to make strides in product development and software.A suite of affordable EVs across Volkswagen's volume brands, including VW, Spain's Cupra and the Czech Republic's Skoda, will be on show at the event.Volkswagen will also premiere its new ID. Tiguan electric SUV.Volkswagen is by far Europe's top-selling automaker, with a consistent market share of roughly a quarter over the last decade, even as Chinese entrants like BYD and Leapmotor build a following.Still, Volkswagen is feeling the heat. Its CEO is among German auto industry leaders calling for a more protectionist EU stance, as fears of retaliation from Beijing give way to worries that brutal competition in China has spread to Europe.Gregor Williams, an analyst at Rhodium Group, said: "Industry has become a lot more concerned about the competitive challenge arising in China."The downturn in China's domestic auto market is creating export pressure, Williams said."It's one thing to lose revenues," he added. "But if China also manages to export the price war, the European market could become very unprofitable." 

World No.1 Jannik Sinner delayed his return to the courts when he withdrew from next week's China Open in Beijing on Friday having been out of action since his Wimbledon title in July due to a right knee injury."I won't be able to play in Beijing this year. My knee is not there where I would like it to be and I'm not ready to compete yet but I will do everything possible to be there as soon as I can," the Italian defending champion said on X.The five-time Grand Slam winner has not played since winning Wimbledon on July 12, pulling out of the US Open last month.Sinner, 25, had been dominating the 2026 season with an impressive record of 44 wins against three losses and six titles won, including Wimbledon.However, he suffered a major disappointment at the French Open, where he arrived as the overwhelming favourite but crashed out in the second round after suffering in a heatwave. ZVEREV'S CHANCE TO GET NO.1 RANKINGThe absence of the tour's top player in Beijing increases the chances for his closest rival, Alexander Zverev, to move to the top of the ATP rankings for the first time by the end of the season.At the moment, 1,810 points separate the world's top two players. But that gap will shrink by at least 440 points in the next ATP rankings.Sinner also has significantly more points to defend than the German between now and the end of the season, since in 2025 he won the ATP 500 events in Beijing and Vienna, the Paris Masters 1000 and the ATP Finals in Turin, which award 1,500 points to the winner.Zverev, 29, was far less effective at the end of last season and will therefore be able to rack up more points than Sinner in the year's final tournaments.Having won the first two Grand Slam titles of his career in 2026, at Roland Garros and the US Open, Zverev reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the final at Wimbledon, the German is enjoying the best season of his career.He is entered in tournaments in Beijing, Shanghai and Vienna over the coming weeks.
