Kane relishing chance to become England's most-capped player

Harry Kane is in line to move level with Peter Shilton as England's most-capped player over the next fortnight, but is wondering why the record of 125 appearances for the national side is not higher.Kane is currently four short of Shilton's haul but a quartet of Nations League fixtures against Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic (two) could allow him to equal the celebrated goalkeeper's record."Growing up, the dream was just to play for England and being most capped was never even in my mind at that stage," said Kane, the Three Lions' all-time top goalscorer."The journey has been incredible to this stage, and we have achieved so much as a group and personally achieved so much and been in finals, taking the England team to a level that it hasn't been for a long, long time."So, to be four away from the all-time is just incredible and hopefully I am able to play the four games and then be back in November and be able to break it."Kane is just one of 10 men to have reached a century of caps for England.By contrast, Cristiano Ronaldo has represented Portugal a world-leading 233 times, with contemporaries Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Luka Modric (Croatia) also having passed 200 caps for their respective countries.Kane's former Tottenham team-mates Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Ivan Perisic are among a variety of modern-day players to have featured in over 150 internationals."It makes you wonder why (not) as well with England," added Kane. "Is it a cultural thing? Is it a mentality thing? Is it maybe the pressure from the outside?"Why have some of our great England players not reached that 160, 170, 180 (caps) like some of the other nations?"From my point of view, it will be an honour but ultimately there is still a long way to go and still hopefully a lot more caps I can achieve."Despite his prolific record of 85 international goals, a major tournament victory is the one thing missing from Kane's England career.A home Euros in two years' time could present his final opportunity and he is targeting Saturday's clash against world champions Spain at Wembley as a chance to lay down a marker."Look, we're playing the reigning European champions, the reigning world champions, so it doesn't get any tougher in terms of who we're going to face," he added."But ultimately if we want to be Nations League champions, European champions in a couple years, we're going to have to beat teams like Spain and Croatia and the bigger nations. It's good for us to test ourselves, test the group."

Zidane admits emotion on eve of first game as France coach

France legend Zinedine Zidane on Thursday admitted to feeling "immense emotion" as he prepared to take charge of Les Bleus for the first time in their UEFA Nations League clash with Turkey."I feel even more emotional than I did ahead of my first game as a player. Today I feel immense emotion at being able to be here in charge of France," Zidane said ahead of Friday's Group A1 game at the home of Kocaelispor in northern Turkey.The 54-year-old star of the France team that won the World Cup in 1998 was appointed in July to succeed his former international colleague Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after 14 years at the helm.Zidane was a superstar as a player and remains an icon in his home country, two decades after hanging up his boots. He has since enjoyed success as coach of Real Madrid and there is huge anticipation in France at his appointment."That is entirely logical," Zidane acknowledged. "But the protagonists are the players. I will stick to my job and try to put something in place with the players to get them winning games. That's what interests me."Zidane also revealed that captain Kylian Mbappe was back training normally again after struggling with illness earlier in the week.After the clash with Turkey, Zidane and France face Belgium in Brussels next Monday before a home double-header against Italy and Belgium at the Stade de France at the start of next month.Midfielder Adrien Rabiot believes having the spotlight on Zidane could benefit the players."We know how important he has been for French football. His aura means he takes up a lot of space and people expect a lot from him," said the AC Milan man."He is trying to stay out of the spotlight to allow the players to fully express themselves, and so that people talk as little as possible about him."That is obviously difficult but it's maybe a good thing because talking more about the coach than about certain players could allow them to be left a bit more in peace."

Roberto Mancini has launched his second tenure as Italy head coach with a sweeping rebuild, naming an expanded 34-man roster on Friday for their Nations League games as the team try to rebound from missing out on the 2026 World Cup.Mancini returned to the bench following a chaotic summer for the Italian federation, taking over after Gennaro Gattuso left and a brief, fraught attempt to appoint Andrea Pirlo collapsed amid a fierce backlash over Pirlo's commercial ties to a Russian betting company.Among nine players receiving their first senior international call-ups are Brentford fullback Michael Kayode, Monza defender Eddie Kwaidoo, Borussia Dortmund's Samuele Inacio and winger Mohamed Ali Zoma who plays for second-tier Bundesliga side 1. FC Nurnberg.In a move highlighting Mancini’s intention to reform the squad's core, several high-profile figures were omitted, most notably Mateo Retegui. The Argentine-born striker, who proved pivotal during Mancini's previous reign, was left out despite a strong start to the season in Saudi Arabia, where he has scored four goals in seven league matches.Cagliari's Daniel Maldini was called up, just days after his driving licence was suspended following a car crash in Milan where he was found to be over the legal alcohol limit.Italy begin their campaign on September 25 when they face Belgium at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, followed by games against Turkey and France.Italy squad:Goalkeepers: Marco Carnesecchi (Atalanta), Gianluigi Donnarumma (Manchester City), Massimo Pessina (Bologna), Guglielmo Vicario (Juventus)Defenders: Honest Ahanor (Crystal Palace), Alessandro Bastoni (Inter), Riccardo Calafiori (Arsenal), Diego Coppola (Paris FC), Giovanni Di Lorenzo (Napoli), Federico Dimarco (Inter), Daniele Ghilardi (Roma), Michael Kayode (Brentford), Eddy Kouadio (Monza), Gianluca Mancini (Roma), Giorgio Scalvini (Atalanta)Midfielders: Nicolo Barella (Inter), Bryan Cristante (Roma), Issa Doumbia (Sporting CP), Nicolo Fagioli (Fiorentina), Davide Frattesi (Lazio), Rolando Mandragora (Torino), Alessandro Romano (Cagliari), Sandro Tonali (Tottenham)Forwards: Nicolo Cambiaghi (Bologna), Francesco Esposito (Inter), Sebastiano Esposito (Sassuolo), Samuele Inacio (Borussia Dortmund), Moise Kean (Como), Daniel Maldini (Cagliari), Giacomo Raspadori (Atalanta), Gianluca Scamacca (Atalanta), Antonio Vergara (Napoli), Nicolo Zaniolo (Udinese), Mohamed Ali Zoma (Nurnberg)

Pressure on Italy as play-off hopefuls eye 2026 World Cup

The final line-up for the 2026 World Cup will be decided over the next week, with 16 teams competing for the last four places allocated to European countries.Twelve runners-up from the qualifying groups and four teams that earned spots through their UEFA Nations League results have a second chance to punch their ticket to football's global showpiece. Here is a look at the four play-off routes that will determine the remaining qualifiers for the first 48-team World Cup: Path AFour-time World Cup winners Italy face immense pressure as they attempt to qualify for a first appearance at the tournament since 2014. After lifting the trophy in 2006, Italy's record at the World Cup has been dire. They suffered two successive group-stage exits before missing out entirely on the 2018 and 2022 editions.In order to avoid another qualifying failure Italy must overcome Northern Ireland in Bergamo on Thursday, before a potential final against Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 31. "It's only normal that there's pressure - only if you had no blood in your veins would you not feel it," said Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso, who played in the 2006 final which the Azzurri won on penalties against France.Northern Ireland are big underdogs against Italy but hope to end a 40-year absence from the World Cup. Wales host Bosnia in Cardiff in the other semi-final.Manager Craig Bellamy said earlier this month that he "feels a responsibility" to lead Wales to a second straight finals. Their appearance in Qatar was the country's first at the World Cup in 64 years. Path BUkraine's footballers will hope to lift the morale of a war-torn country by competing at a first World Cup in 20 years. To get there, they need to beat Sweden on neutral ground in Valencia and then Poland or Albania.Sweden picked up just two points in a dismal qualifying campaign but a team now coached by former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter will get another shot on the strength of their Nations League performances.However, Sweden will be without key man Alexander Isak as the Liverpool forward is not yet ready to return from a broken leg suffered in December.Poland can count on Robert Lewandowski who is eyeing a third World Cup, but Albania – led by former Arsenal and Barcelona defender Sylvinho – believe they have what it takes to qualify for the first time. Path CKosovo stand two wins away from a first major tournament a decade on from their admission to UEFA and FIFA. They came second in their qualifying group after two wins over Sweden and a victory in Slovenia. "It's a massive opportunity for us. The whole country is buzzing with excitement. Everyone's over the moon," Kosovo captain Vedat Muriqi said.Mallorca striker Muriqi sits second only to Kylian Mbappe in La Liga this season with 18 goals. The 31-year-old is also Kosovo's all-time record scorer. Slovakia, who last featured at the World Cup in 2010, host Kosovo in Bratislava while Turkey and Romania square off in Istanbul. Turkey have not played at the World Cup since a surprise third-place finish in 2002. Romania's most recent appearance was in 1998. Path DTroy Parrott's heroics snatched the Republic of Ireland a play-off berth, but there is much still to be done if the Irish are to return to the World Cup stage.Ireland, who haven't featured at the tournament since 2002, head to Prague to take on the Czech Republic in the semi-finals. The winner of that tie will host the final against Denmark or North Macedonia."There's a quiet confidence in the group growing together, it's great to see but we know there's a lot of hard work to come," said Ireland assistant John O'Shea.Denmark missed out on automatic qualification after a dramatic defeat in Scotland but will be expected to see off North Macedonia, whose lone tournament appearance came at Euro 2020.Kasper Schmeichel is absent for Denmark after revealing last week that he may have played his final game, with two surgeries required to repair his damaged shoulder.
