Mbappe wins World Cup Golden Boot

Kylian Mbappe won the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot on Sunday after Lionel Messi failed to add to his tally in the final in New Jersey.The France captain scored 10 goals to top the charts ahead of Argentina great Messi, who finished with eight.England midfielder Jude Bellingham and Norway striker Erling Haaland each scored seven times.Real Madrid forward Mbappe, 27, also won the prize at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where France were beaten finalists.The Frenchman, who made his World Cup debut in 2018, scored twice in Saturday's third-place play-off, which England won 6-4.Mbappe is now the top scorer in World Cup history, with 22 goals across three World Cups, one ahead of Messi."I would have preferred not to be the all-time top scorer and to be playing tomorrow's match," said Mbappe, who has won more than 100 caps.

Spain down Argentina to win World Cup, shatter Messi dream

Ferran Torres scored an extra-time winner as Spain defeated holders Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup on Sunday and shatter Lionel Messi's dreams of a triumphant farewell to football's greatest stage.Barcelona striker Torres lashed home a thumping finish in the 106th minute to reward a dominant display by Spain against an Argentina team who failed to register a single shot on target in 120 minutes.A star-studded crowd of 80,663 that included US President Donald Trump packed East Rutherford's MetLife Stadium to see if Argentina captain Messi could crown his glittering career with a second World Cup victory.But the 39-year-old maestro -- almost certainly playing in his final World Cup game -- was reduced to irrelevance as Spain took control early on against an Argentina team who committed a catalogue of cynical fouls throughout.The South Americans' skullduggery ended with midfielder Enzo Fernandez being sent off after a brutal challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi in injury time.For long periods though it looked as if Argentina may somehow hold on for a penalty shoot-out as Spain struggled to make the breakthrough.But after Nico Williams had a goal controversially disallowed in extra-time, Spain struck.A lofted cross to the back post by Pedro Porro found Williams who nodded into the path of Torres to crash home the goal that would clinch Spain's second World Cup title after their maiden 2010 triumph.Earlier, a clear sign of Argentina's frustration came in the 15th minute when Alexis Mac Allister went flying in with a studs-up challenge that struck Dani Olmo's ankle.Mac Allister escaped an early yellow card although after Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic only awarded a foul.Spain made their presence felt moments later though, with Alex Baena poleaxing Messi with an elbow to the back that again escaped sanction.Argentina continued to test referee Vincic's patience with a series of niggly challenges, and Nicolas Tagliafico was lucky not to be cautioned after raking Lamine Yamal's calf in a clumsy challenge.LOPSIDED FINALSpain meanwhile continued to probe for openings but Mikel Oyarzabal failed to seriously test Emi Martinez with a low shot that the Argentina goalkeeper gathered easily in the 39th minute.Eventually though Vincic did reach for a yellow card, with Lisandro Martinez booked for a cynical challenge on Oyarzabal.Martinez was substituted shortly afterwards with an apparent injury, veteran Nicolas Otamendi coming on in his place.The final's controversial extended half-time show featuring the likes of Madonna, Shakira and Justin Bieber stretched to 27 minutes but did little to upset Spain's rhythm.The Spanish piled on the pressure in a lopsided second half as Argentina hung on grimly.Spain coach de la Fuente sent on Pedri and Ferran Torres for Fabian Ruiz and Oyarzabal and the chances continued with Argentina in full siege mode.Yamal twisted away and chipped a cross for Torres, whose downward header was saved by Martinez.Pedri and Cubarsi both lashed long-range shots that Martinez failed to grasp at the first attempt but somehow Argentina continued to hold on.But the arrival of substitutes Williams and Mikel Merino gave fresh life to Spain's attacking momentum, and the onslaught continued.Fernandez was booked for dissent in the 82nd minute before Torres and Rodri both fired long-range shots from Martinez.Fernandez's dismissal left Spain down to 10 men heading into extra-time.Martinez had one last save deep in stoppage time when Yamal's superb whipped free-kick was clawed wide.The Spanish dominance continued in extra-time, with Williams almost opening the scoring with a glancing header that Martinez got down well to save one-handed.Moments later it looked as if Spain had made the breakthrough when Williams slid a low finish into the net but referee Vincic blew for a marginal foul on Nicolas Otamendi.But the breakthrough came with Torres's winner on 106 minutes. Argentina made a desperate last raid on Spain's goal but La Roja held firm to seal victory.

All you need to know about Lionel Messi ahead of FIFA World Cup final

As Argentina prepares to face Spain in Sunday's spectacular World Cup final in New Jersey, the narrative belongs entirely to Lionel Messi. At 39 years old, he has turned this tournament into a timeless masterclass, spearheading his country's title defense with an astonishing eight goals and four assists. Reinventing himself from a lethal early-stage finisher into a clutch playmaker, evidenced by his two brilliant assists to unlock England in the semi-final, Messi continues to completely defy age. He enters Sunday on the cusp of yet another historic footballing crowning. Here a few key points to ponder before the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday:  ** Lionel Messi and Argentina will try to become the first team to defend a World Cup title since 1962.  ** Argentina captain Messi, 39, will be playing in his third World Cup final in what is almost certainly likely to be his last appearance in the tournament. ** Messi enters the weekend tied with France's Kylian Mbappe for the tournament lead with 8 goals, and with 4 assists is one shy of Mbappe's teammate Michael Olise. (This is before France play England in Saturday's third-place ‌match) ** After winning Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024 with Argentina, Messi is attempting to help his homeland become the third back-to-back World Cup champion, following Italy in 1934 and 1938, and Pele's Brazil in 1958 and 1962. ** Messi gave Argentina a different kind of icon to Maradona: quieter in public, but with greater global reach and longevity.  ** He won nearly every major honour at club level with Barcelona, becoming the face of a dominant side, though that success made him a target for rival fans.  ** His rivalry with Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo added another layer, splitting global football into Messi and Ronaldo camps.  ** After years of being compared to Maradona and nagged for failing to deliver a major tournament title for his country, Messi led Argentina to the 2022 title in Qatar.  ** His continuing presence has made Argentina a magnet for admirers, including in India and Bangladesh, many miles from Argentina. But others have wearied of the Messi-centric narrative and the adulation surrounding him.

'Emotional' Argentina, Lionel Messi chase repeat World Cup title against Spain

Lionel Messi and Argentina will try to become the first team to defend a World Cup title since 1962 in the final on Sunday against a Spanish side that could boast the next generation's greatest player in Lamine Yamal.The path to the afternoon kickoff in East Rutherford, N.J., has been decidedly more emotional for Argentina, who twice came from behind and twice required extra time during the knockout phase.That included two late goals assisted by the current generation's greatest player -- 39-year-old Messi. Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored in a dramatic 2-1 win over slightly favored England in Wednesday's semifinal.But manager Lionel Scaloni said the outbursts of emotions that have accompanied each win are exactly what is needed to process such a run, which may well be Messi's last. It's also a reflection of the seismic support that has followed the Albiceleste to stadiums across the United States. RECOVERY 'EXTREMELY VALUABLE'"We've recovered something which is extremely valuable, which is the fact that people are watching our games on TV, wearing the Argentinian jersey and hugging each other," Scaloni said through an interpreter. "This feeling of unity, we really feel it. People are with us, supporting us and backing us. And that's very emotional for us. And it's good to express emotions. I believe that's part of life. It's part of what we are. And that makes you even more human."Incredibly, Messi enters the weekend tied with France's Kylian Mbappe for the tournament lead with eight goals, and with four assists is one shy of Mbappe's teammate Michael Olise. .After winning Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024 with Argentina, Messi is attempting to help his homeland become the third back-to-back World Cup champion, following Italy in 1934 and 1938, and Pele's Brazil in 1958 and 1962.Meanwhile, his teammates have been trying to embrace the moment, a luxury they didn't have in 2022 when they shouldered the pressure of ending a 36-year World Cup drought. 'ENJOYING THE WORLD CUP'"I am enjoying this World Cup much more than the one in Qatar," admitted 33-year-old goalkeeper Emi Martinez through an interpreter. "And for me, being in my fifth final with a national team, well, I don't want to take credit away from me. I am eternally thankful to my teammates, and I just want to enjoy. I'm going to jump on the pitch with a smile, as this is something that many players cannot achieve."Neither the 1938 Italy nor the 1962 Brazil national teams faced a final opponent as revered as the Spaniards, the defending European champions and three-time UEFA Nations League finalists.Other than a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in their opener, Spain have rarely looked seriously in jeopardy and were dominant in a 2-0 semifinal victory over favored France.And they've done all of this with only one goal from the 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, who began the tournament still working back to 90-minute fitness after recovering from a left hamstring strain sustained in mid-April playing for FC Barcelona. COMPARISON UNWISEThe presence of Messi on the other team will bring comparisons for Lamine, whose only goal came in a 4-0 group-stage win over Saudi Arabia. But Spain manager Luis de la Fuente said comparison is unwise."Messi is a one-of-a-time-in-history player, and he's an example, a role model for youth and younger players, his attitude, his behavior," de la Fuente said through an interpreter. "Lamine has to be Lamine Yamal himself, and the best way we can support him is by helping him be the person we know today because he has a great potential, a great future."Spain are looking for their second World Cup crown after their 2010 triumph in South Africa with an earlier generation.With Fabian Ruiz, Dani Olmo and Rodri in midfield, this group is arguably as talented, if not necessarily as flamboyant, as that 2010 group. And they insist they are just as determined to leave their own legacy."We are very much satisfied with the team's process, but we are far more ambitious than this," Rodri said through an interpreter. "We have a great challenge ahead of us on Sunday, a very beautiful challenge in order to make (people) proud of this generation."

Tackling Messi 'huge challenge' for Spain: Merino

Spanish super-sub Mikel Merino said Friday that neutralising the threat of Lionel Messi will be a "huge challenge" as La Roja prepare for their World Cup final showdown against Argentina.Argentina skipper Messi, 39, has been pivotal in dragging the defending champions into Sunday's final in East Rutherford, orchestrating a 2-1 semi-final victory over England with two assists.Messi, the tournament's joint top-scorer with eight goals, also inspired a dramatic comeback against Egypt in the last 16, when Argentina fought back from 2-0 down with 11 minutes remaining to win 3-2."It's a huge challenge, an incredible motivation for me and the whole team," Merino said of facing Messi."Being able to play against a side like Argentina, which has already won this trophy, makes the match even more significant, and I'm very happy to be experiencing this moment," Merino told reporters at Spain's training base in East Hanover, New Jersey.Arsenal ace Merino has played a decisive role in Spain's road to the final, coming off the substitutes bench to score late winners in a last-16 defeat of Portugal and a quarter-final victory over Belgium."I have incredible confidence in myself and my abilities, and every time I step onto the pitch, I believe I can make an impact for the team," Merino stated."But honestly, it doesn't matter who the hero is; the important thing is that the team wins in the end. "When you win a title, it belongs to everyone, not just the starting eleven," he added.Merino meanwhile enthused about the "impressive" talent of 19-year-old Lamine Yamal, who will face Messi for the first time in a clash representing the past and the future of FC Barcelona.Merino, 30, predicted that the final would be "an intense match" and that the referee would need to "control the intensity and frequency of challenges and fouls.""The faster the ball moves between us, the less time the opposition has to commit a foul," he noted.The midfielder, who said he did not have "very clear memories" of Spain's first World Cup title in 2010, recalled the admiration of that trailblazing side."Being able to represent our country today and be those same players for new generations - for the children watching us - is something magical," he said.

Messi magic sends Argentina into World Cup final

Lionel Messi engineered a spectacular comeback for Argentina against England in their World Cup semi-final on Wednesday to keep the defending champions on track for back-to-back titles.Thomas Tuchel's men were within minutes of England's first World Cup final for 60 years before succumbing to relentless pressure from Lionel Scaloni's team, who won 2-1.It sets up a mouthwatering contest between reigning European champions Spain and South American champions Argentina in New Jersey on Sunday.Anthony Gordon fired England ahead in the 55th minute but Argentina refused to be beaten, pouring forward in waves and forcing their opponents back.Enzo Fernandez smashed home an equaliser from Messi's assist 30 minutes later but still they were not done.Substitute Lautaro Martinez then rose to head home Messi's cross in stoppage time to complete the comeback and England ran out of time.It is a bitter blow for the Three Lions, who have come so close at recent major tournaments but have been unable to get over the line.Captain Harry Kane said the English disappointment was enormous."Gutted for the boys, gutted for everyone -- the team, the staff, the fans," Kane said."We played a good game the large majority of it. When we went 1-0 up we seemed to try and hold on, which at this level is not enough."So, just gutted because we've worked so hard to be here and the lads have given every last bit of running, blood, sweat, tears."TENSE ATMOSPHEREEnglish national anthem "God Save the King" was drowned out by Argentine singing in a crowd dominated by supporters in the blue-and-white shirts of the defending champions.David and Victoria Beckham were in the crowd at the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium, along with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.The first half was a cagey affair with little goalmouth action and plenty of fouls, with neither team able to settle into a rhythm.Argentina were ahead on the foul count, though England midfielder Elliot Anderson was the first player to be booked, for a foul on Lionel Messi.England broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the restart when Gordon burst into the box, getting in front of Nahuel Molina to sidefoot home Morgan Rogers' cross.Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni made a triple change after the second-half hydration break as he searched for a way back into the game.Alexis Mac Allister thundered a header against England 'keeper Jordan Pickford's right-hand post and then drew another save as England clung on to their slender lead. REWARD IN THE 85TH MINUTEThree-time champions Argentina got their reward in the 85th minute when Chelsea midfielder Fernandez lashed home from outside the penalty box after being set up by the irrepressible Messi.Argentina stayed on the front foot, determined to press home their advantage and Messi was again the man for the big moment, producing an inch-perfect cross for Martinez to head home in stoppage time.The 39-year-odl has produced the magic again and again in his final World Cup, dragging his team to a third final in three tournaments.He has scored eight goals so far to sit joint top of the Golden Boot standings and now has four assists as well.TENSIONSThe fixture between two of the big beasts of global football was given added spice by a lingering sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands, known in Spanish as the Malvinas, in the South Atlantic Ocean.Argentina's Vice President Victoria Villarruel upped the stakes ahead of kick-off in Atlanta by calling the English "usurping pirates", despite efforts by head coach Scaloni to keep the focus on the game.After the game Argentina players held up a banner saying "The Falklands are Argentinian".The fixture has a rich World Cup history.Their most storied World Cup encounter was a 2-1 victory for Argentina in the quarter-finals in Mexico in 1986, featuring two goals from the late Diego Maradona -- one the infamous "Hand of God" goal and the other a dazzling solo effort.Twelve years later, at France 1998, David Beckham was sent off for a foul on Diego Simeone as Argentina beat England on penalties.Luis de la Fuente's Spain produced a masterclass in Arlington, Texas, to beat favourites France 2-0 on Tuesday.

Enzo Fernandez changed England's weekend plans and Lautaro Martinez booked Argentina in the World Cup final with the game-winner seven minutes later in another dramatic comeback and 2-1 win for the defending world champs at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.Two possessions after he fired a rising missile deflected over the net by England keeper ‌Jordan Pickford, Hernandez used a Lionel Messi assist for a replay of almost the same shot, but planted this one into the left ‌corner of the net in the 85th minute. In the first two minutes of extra time, ‌Martinez settled in front of Pickford at the left edge ‌of the goal and headed a Messi pass by ‌Pickford to cap a stirring rally.The reigning World Cup champions, Argentina meet Spain on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J., with a chance to claim a fourth title.Messi has eight goals and four assists in this World Cup and a tournament- record 12 career assists after two on Wednesday.For more than 80 minutes, all signs were pointing to England getting its first World Cup championship bid in decades. GORDON BROKE THE DEADLOCKWith Argentina's defense backpedaling, Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.He tallied the game's first goal on a brilliant assist from Morgan Rogers, who was fed by Declan Rice. Rogers recovered the ball outside the box right of the goal and found Gordon streaking ahead of defenders to deflect the pass with the side of his right foot for the score.Moments later, England defender Djed Spence caught up to Giuliano Simeone, who had space and pace behind coverage on what would have been a clean shot from close range. The maligned Spence ‌delivered one of the tackles of the tournament, covering significant distance to dislodge the ball inside the box.Before a hydration break as the 70th minute approached, Pickford made his own bid for England's gold star defensive play of the game. He got his right hand on a ball sailing for the right corner of the goal to make a deflection and diving save to his right, keeping the score 1-0. ONLY INCHES AWAY Only inches spared the Three Lions and Pickford from the equalizer courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister in the 76th minute when he met a cross from Rodrigo DePaul near the penalty spot but the shot cannoned off the right post.La Scaloneta tested Pickford immediately out of the halftime break. Julian Alvarez ripped two shots approaching from Pickford's left to spike the energy and decibel level in the dome, but missed both. The second sank into the outside of the net.Messi and Argentina also threatened late in the first half, first when ‌Messi danced free of Harry Kane near midfield ‌and drew a yellow card on midfielder Elliot Anderson. The possession nearly ended in a goal by Fernandez, who tallied the decisive quarterfinal goal to eliminate Egypt last week in the round of 16. His clean strike from outside the box whizzed over the top right corner of the bar in the 39th minute and the first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate.Neither team threatened a legitimate attempt in a physical opening 19 minutes highlighted by contested defense and restraint from referee Ismail Elfath, allowing grinding defense to turn into grass stains instead of scoring chances. CHEST-THUMPING EXCHANGES Elfath helped separate England's Jude Bellingham and Messi when the match opened with a no-call on a forearm from Fernandez to the back of Anderson's head, one of multiple chest-thumping exchanges between the teams in the first half.England missed three chances in the first half. The initial shot could've been confused for a pass. It came when right back Reece James one-touched a pass from Rogers and looked for his first score of the World Cup. His low, soft try from right of the penalty area was easily smothered at ankle height by Emiliano Martinez.Before the late onslaught Messi, playing in his sixth World Cup and 206th international match for Argentina, had a clean look outside the box in the 83rd minute but pushed it wide left.Argentina finished with 15 attempts on goal to five for England, which squares off with France in the third-place match in Miami ‌on Saturday.Spain can break a tie with Italy with a victory. La Roja carries a 37-match unbeaten streak -- 30 wins, seven draws -- into the championship match, vying to win the World Cup for the second time (2010).

Messi not done yet after inspiring Argentina to World Cup final

Lionel Messi has already won the World Cup, but the Argentina captain added another chapter to his astonishing career on Wednesday, inspiring his team to victory in their semi-final against England.The defending champions were up against it, trailing to Anthony Gordon's goal until the 85th minute in Atlanta before Messi worked his magic.This time the tournament's all-time leading marksman did not score. But he teed up Enzo Fernandez for the equaliser and delivered the cross for Lautaro Martinez to head in the winner, sealing a 2-1 victory."These are special feelings. I think the squad could feel it and this was a game the Argentine people really wanted to win, and so did we," Messi, 39, said after facing England for the first time in his career."This is still a special fixture."He was not quite able to emulate Diego Maradona, who scored two iconic goals in Argentina's 1986 World Cup quarter-final win over England.But he will settle for the two assists, and he has already emulated his legendary predecessor by winning the trophy four years ago in Qatar.Now, after Argentina maintained their incredible record of never having lost a World Cup semi-final, Messi will appear in a second straight final, and a third overall.The South Americans are aiming to become the first team to retain the World Cup since Brazil in 1962, and Messi, the sole survivor from the side that lost to Germany in 2014, will become just the second player after Brazilian great Cafu to appear in three finals."It is crazy to be playing in back-to-back finals," he said.Argentina had already staged a stunning late comeback to beat Egypt 3-2 in the same Atlanta stadium in the last 16, and they smelled blood as England sat deeper and deeper after going ahead."Once again we managed to do the job when things were looking bad. We never stopped believing," said Messi, who has now played a record 33 World Cup games across six different tournaments.For long spells on Wednesday his influence was limited, but that has often been the way with Messi and he was still able to drag his team to victory."I felt like for large parts of the game, we dealt with him really well. But as always with the most dangerous players in the world, when they have the ball in the final third, they can create something," said England captain Harry Kane."He's done that again today. He's obviously one of the best players ever for a reason."Spanish reunionMessi is arguably the greatest of all, and there may no longer be an argument if Argentina successfully defend their title in Sunday's final against Spain.Pele and Maradona only played in two World Cup finals while Maradona won the trophy just once.Messi is also the all-time top scorer in World Cup history with 21 goals, although Kylian Mbappe is just one behind and plays Saturday against England in the third-place play-off.He could easily have bowed out of international football after 2022, when Argentina defeated France in the final.But he appears to have been saving himself for this World Cup in recent years, removing himself from the intensity of European football and acclimatising to American conditions with Inter Miami.While Cristiano Ronaldo's ongoing presence in the Portugal team may have held them back, Messi remains almost as influential as ever."He is just the leader and key player in any team in which he plays," said England coach Thomas Tuchel.Now he gets his chance to play Spain in a competitive game for the first time, and the identity of the opposition makes the occasion even more special.Messi moved to Barcelona with his family at the age of 13 and stayed for two decades, before leaving in 2021 for Paris Saint-Germain.He has a Spanish passport and may one day settle down again in Castelldefels, just down the coast from Barcelona.But before Messi thinks about that, he wants to douse Spain's dreams.

Can ageless Messi keep delivering for Argentina at World Cup?

Lionel Messi has scored in every World Cup match so far, but after two gruelling knockout ties, will age finally catch up with the 39-year-old in the quarter-final against Switzerland?Lionel Scaloni's team sailed through the group stage but have been pushed to the limit by Cape Verde and Egypt.They needed extra time to squeeze past the World Cup newcomers in the last 32 before winning 3-2 and then came back from the dead against Mohamed Salah's team.The defending champions have won all five of their games, with Messi's brilliance and their unshakeable team spirit central to their progress.Messi made up for a missed penalty against Egypt with a wonderfully composed finish as Argentina rallied from two goals down in the closing minutes.He broke down in a rare show of emotion at the end of the pulsating 3-2 win in Atlanta, saying he was desperate for his World Cup journey to continue."It was a moment of pure happiness and relief," said the Inter Miami forward. "We wanted to stay in the tournament. We didn't want today to be the end, we didn't want to go home."Messi admitted he was tired after playing 120 minutes against Cape Verde but he featured for the whole game against Egypt and remains indispensable. Saturday's quarter-final at Arrowhead Stadium will take him back to the scene of his hat-trick in Argentina's first match of the 2026 tournament.He has continued his scoring run, taking his tally to eight -- level with Golden Boot rival Kylian Mbappe.And he has also become the leading scorer in World Cup history, with 21 goals across his career. Team spirit Aside from their diminutive genius, Argentina's most potent weapon is their remarkable camaraderie.The South Americans are now unbeaten in 11 World Cup games as they seek to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups."Whatever happens from here on, this team gives me the feeling that it never stops believing, even when everything is going against it," said Scaloni.That sentiment is echoed by midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who said the side "never gives up no matter the difficulties and adversity".There have even been dark suggestions that Argentina -- trailed everywhere by legions of blue-and-white-clad fans -- have been treated favourably at the World Cup.Egypt coach Hossam Hassan speculated that the officiating team for the last-16 game may have been subjected to "external pressure" to favour Argentina, a suggestion quashed by FIFA referees chief Pierluigi Collina.The South Americans face a tough test against an industrious and well-drilled Switzerland team in Kansas City.The Swiss, led by their influential captain Granit Xhaka, are one win away from reaching their first-ever World Cup semi-final.Murat Yakin's men eased past Algeria 2-0 in the round of 32 before holding their nerve to beat a strong Colombia team on penalties.Attacking midfielder Johan Manzambi was outstanding during the group stage, adding thrust to a team of experienced campaigners and scoring three times.But Manzambi missed the match against Colombia with an injury and is a doubt for the Argentina match.Xhaka, 33, said Switzerland had waited a long time to find such a potent mix of experience and youth."I think this generation we have now is a special one," the Sunderland midfielder said."Of course, we try to pass on our experience, but above all the mentality that, even as a small nation, anything is possible at this level, in elite football," Xhaka added."From the coaching staff to the last player, we can all be proud of what we've achieved."The winners of the match in Kansas City will face either Norway or England, who clash in Miami, also on Saturday.

Messi inspires Argentina in stunning late comeback to see off Egypt

Reigning champions Argentina were pushed to the brink by a Cape Verde side with incredible levels of resilience and needed an extra-time own goal to clinch a dramatic 3-2 victory on Friday and a place in the last 16 at the World Cup.Cape Verde, playing in their first global finals, twice came from a goal behindin a thrilling contest that went down to the wire in front of a noisy crowd of 64,478 packed into a hot and humid Miami Stadium.Six minutes into the second period of extra time, however, Lionel Messi swung a corner into the box and Cristian Romero rose to head home off the arm of Cape Verde's Diney Borges and secure Argentina a date with Egypt in Atlanta next Tuesday.Messi had, almost inevitably, given Argentina the lead in the 29th minute with his seventh goal of the tournament but Deroy Duarte equalised just before the hour mark.In the second minute of the first period of extra time, Argentina's Lisandro Martinez thought he had won the match when he lashed a sumptuous shot into the roof of the net.Cape Verde were not done yet, however, and left back Sidny Lopes Cabral curled a beautiful shot into the top corner of the net to put the scores back on level terms at 2-2.Lopes Cabral could have equalised again after the decisive own goal but his finely struck free kick was saved by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who had to be at his best to deny Cape Verde in the dying minutes."The match was incredibly tough. You always have to take the positive, and it's that this team never gives up," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, who was overseeing his 100th match in charge of the Albiceleste."I want to congratulate our opponents. Today they showed they are a great team. When it is said there are no easy matches in the World Cup, it's true."Cape Verde were beaten but far from outclassed by the three-times world champions as they put in a fourth magnificent display of teamwork and grit in their debut World Cup."I'm proud of my team, the work they've put in," said coach Bubista. "We must take pride in what we've done for our country. To be able to play the way we did against the world champions, and to draw level twice, is something incredible." OBDURATE DEFENCEThe only one of the four World Cup debutants to make it to the last 32 and ranked 67th in the world coming into the tournament, Cape Verde had hoped to frustrate Argentina as they did Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in group-stage draws.They succeeded for much of the game with their never-say-die attitude, while showing no shortage of quality of their own in a neat pass-and-move game.Messi aside, Argentina were largely bereft of ideas against an obdurate defence and Cape Verde libero Kevin Pina was the most impressive player on the park for long periods.It was Argentina who made the breakthrough in the 29th minute, however, when Martinez lofted a long ball over the top of the defence to the feet of Messi.The 39-year-old maestro took a touch with the outside of his left boot and buried it in the roof of Vozinha's net for his 20th goal over six editions of soccer's global showpiece.Cape Verde knew they would need to score to keep their World Cup campaign alive and Duarte fired a shot at goal soon after halftime that drew a diving save out of Martinez. DRILLED PAST MARTINEZJust before the hour mark, though, Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes was freed down the right and his pass into the box found Dutch-born midfielder Duarte, who controlled the ball with his left foot before drilling it past Martinez with his right.Messi had a chance to put Argentina back in front four minutes later when he was played through on goal, but Vozinha stood up well to keep his shot out of the net.One of Messi's trademark free kicks was tipped away by Vozinha in the 72nd minute and Cape Verde defender Pico Lopes had to intervene to prevent Enzo Fernandez scoring 10 minutes later.Cape Verde held on to force the dramatic period of extra time and they will now return home heroes having put their tiny island-nation firmly on the footballing map."More than anything, we must be proud of what we've achieved," Bubista added. "This World Cup has done justice to our efforts. It has shown our character. It's a shame to lose, but it was incredible."
