Manchester City suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat against Bodo/Glimt as the Norwegian minnows caused one of the biggest shocks in Champions League history. Pep Guardiola’s side were blown away by Kasper Hogh’s first half brace and a second half strike from Jens Petter Hauge at the ecstatic Aspmyra Stadion. Rayan Cherki got one back moments after Hauge’s goal, but Rodri’s dismissal for two bookings left City in tatters as Bodo/Glimt celebrated their first ever win in the Champions League group phase. In a fishing town situated 200km north of the Arctic Circle, the 2023 European champions were caught cold in freezing temperatures of minus two degrees. Bodo’s entire population of only 55,000 people could almost fit into City’s Etihad Stadium. But Kjetil Knutsen’s underdogs ignored the huge financial and talent gap between the clubs to inflict a chastening defeat on the Premier League giants. Bodo/Glimt, who hadn’t played since December after the end of the Norwegian season, reached the Europa League semi-finals last term, an impressive run that maintained their remarkable rise over the last decade. In their first ever season in the Champions League group phase, Bodo/Glimt had already earned creditable draws against Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham. City failed to heed the warning, playing with a lack of urgency in the face of Bodo/Glimt’s relentless pressing. They travelled to Norway earlier than Guardiola’s usual schedule to ensure his players were able to practise on Bodo/Glimt’s artificial pitch. Yet they were totally out of sync in the latest disjointed display in an increasingly troubled season. City are without a win in their last four Premier League matches, with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester United leaving them seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Guardiola will be alarmed by City’s second successive tame surrender, which exposed the Spainard’s claim that his players had rediscovered their hunger after finishing without a trophy last season. The City boss had said he planned to enjoy the Northern Lights from his hotel before the match, but that will be his only fond memory from one of the most embarrassing losses of his glittering career. City’s final group phase fixture is at home to Galatasaray on January 28 as they try to seal an automatic place in the last 16 via a top-eight finish. 

Manchester City signed Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on a five-and-a-half-year contract for a reported fee of £20mn. City stepped up their pursuit of the England international after suffering an injury crisis at centre-half. Guehi, who came close to joining Liverpool on transfer deadline day in September, is City’s second signing of the January transfer window after their capture of Ghana winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for about £65 million. “I am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player,” Guehi said. “This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career. I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players. It feels good to be able to say that. I want to grow as a player and a person, and I know at this club that’s going to happen.” City boss Pep Guardiola praised his club for sealing the deal for the highly sought after defender. “A top central defender, playing for the national team. Personally, thanks to the club to bring him here because he’s come at the perfect age, he can play right and left,” he said. “I know how much he wanted to choose us. With the problems that we have in the back in the next few months it’s really, really important he’s here. I’m pretty sure if he had a long contract at Crystal Palace it would have been impossible, but the fact that it’s six months (left), end of contract, the situation was easier in those terms.” The Chelsea academy graduate played 188 times for Palace after moving to Selhurst Park from the Blues in 2021. He captained Palace to FA Cup glory against City in May – the first major trophy in the south London club’s history – and has won 26 England caps. Other teams reportedly interested in the defender, including Liverpool once again and Bayern Munich, were understood to be targeting a move at the end of the season, when Guehi would have been a free agent. Guardiola’s men, dethroned as Premier League champions by Liverpool last year, are second in the table, seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Central defenders John Stones, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol all missed from Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford. The club are also still challenging for silverware in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. Guardiola has overseen an expensive rebuild of his squad over the past year, with a clutch of long-serving players exiting the club, including Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has challenged Paul Scholes to come to his house after the Old Trafford legend mocked the Argentine's height.Scholes and former United team-mate Nicky Butt poked fun at Martinez's chances of winning his duel with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in Saturday's derby.Butt joked the striker "would pick Martinez up and run with him" like a "dad after school running down the road with a little toddler" before Scholes laughed and said that "he'd score then throw him in the net".But in their first game under interim boss Michael Carrick, United restricted City to just one shot on target as Martinez kept Haaland in check during the 2-0 victory.When Scholes' comment about Haaland was put to Martinez, he said: "He can say whatever he wants. I told him already if he wants to say something to me, he can come to wherever he wants. To my house, wherever. I don't care."And I think, for me, I respect the relations when they want to help the club because everyone can talk on the television, but when you see them here face-to-face no-one says anything in your face."So, for me, I don't really care what they say. I just put focus on my performance, the performance of the team and I give everything to this club until my last day."Asked if criticism from the likes of Scholes and Butt gave him extra motivation, Martinez said: "No, no, nothing. It doesn't give me anything. My motivation is my family. That's it."Having seen Martinez's blast, Scholes didn't back down.Posting, on Instagram on Sunday, the former England midfielder: "Someone's had a good game, was really happy for you. Tea, no sugar please!"United's first win since Boxing Day was a much-needed boost after Ruben Amorim's recent sacking.Martinez appears not be have been a fan of Amorim, judging by his pointed assessment of Carrick's immediate impact."So different, so different. Different mentality, different guy," he said."He knows what it really means, this club. He sent us that message that he played here for a long, long time. He won everything."He's a big legend. He wants to help the club and I think we were in a tough situation and today was the best moment to change that."United still have a chance to salvage their troubled campaign by qualifying for next season's Champions League.They sit in fifth place, one point behind Liverpool, and Martinez expects Carrick will make a major difference to their fortunes."When you have a coach like Michael Carrick, who really knows, who really can share with you the energy of the club and what it means, it's so different," Martinez said. 

Antoine Semenyo believes he is in the perfect place to thrive after scoring in each of his first two games for Manchester City. The Ghana international has made an instant impact since his £65mn move from Bournemouth last week and netted the opening goal in City's 2-0 League Cup semi-final, first leg win at Newcastle on Tuesday.Semenyo, who scored in a 10-1 thrashing of Exeter in the FA Cup on Saturday, also had a second goal controversially ruled out by a lengthy VAR review at St. James' Park. "The whole environment here is perfect. Everyone is confident and wanting to achieve the best. I have come into that and they helped with my confidence and made me feel welcome," said Semenyo, who now has 12 goals in all competitions this season. "It's been a lot but I have enjoyed it so far. I am picking things up very quickly and enjoying it. I am just taking the confidence I had from Bournemouth here and playing with a smile on my face. I am enjoying every moment."Semenyo also scored on his debut on Saturday in a 10-1 demolition of Exeter in the FA Cup. In previous years he would have been cup-tied after featuring for Bournemouth earlier in the competition. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe made clear his dissatisfaction before the game with a rule change this season that allows players to play for two clubs in the one campaign and City took full advantage.Rayan Cherki struck what could be the knockout blow to the holders deep into nine minutes of added time due to the interruption for the VAR review on Semenyo's disallowed goal. After a VAR review lasting over five minutes, the officials finally adjudged that Erling Haaland had prevented Malick Thiaw's ability to play the ball from an offside position.Despite taking a commanding lead, City were still furious at the decision with Pep Guardiola citing two penalties his side were not awarded in their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle earlier in the season in the Premier League."It should have been 3-0 but we are quite used to this at the moment," said City captain Bernardo Silva. "It is so frustrating because the last time we came here we also had a lot of decisions go against us."Guardiola showed his desire to reach the final for the first time since 2021 as Erling Haaland made a first League Cup start in three years in a strong City selection just days before they visit Manchester United in the Premier League.Newcastle ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning the League Cup last season, but will need a heroic fightback to reach Wembley when the sides meet again for the second leg of the semi-final on February 4. 

Holders Crystal Palace succumbed to the biggest shock in FA Cup history with a 2-1 defeat at sixth-tier Macclesfield as Antoine Semenyo started his Manchester City career by scoring in a 10-1 rout of Exeter. Tottenham boss Thomas Frank’s future was plunged into doubt after a 2-1 home loss to Aston Villa, while Newcastle beat Bournemouth on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw. In their last FA Cup outing at Wembley in May, Palace made history by beating City to win the club’s first ever major trophy. They entered the record books for the wrong reasons this time at Moss Rose as captain Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts scored either side of half-time for the side managed by John Rooney, the younger brother of former England captain Wayne Rooney. The 117 places that separate Premier League outfit Palace from Macclesfield of the National League North in the English football pyramid is the most overcome by an underdog in FA Cup history. “I can’t believe it, we never thought we would be in this position,” said Rooney. “I didn’t think it was possible but there is that little bit of hope that anything can happen on the day.” Palace boss Oliver Glasner was furious at what he described as a lack of “pride” and “slapstick” defending by the Eagles, who are now winless in nine games. “I have no explanation for what I have seen today,” said the Austrian, who has been linked with the vacant managerial role at Manchester United. Tottenham have won just three times in their last 14 games as their wait to lift the FA Cup for the first time since 1991 goes on. Villa struck twice in a dominant first half through Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers. Wilson Odobert pulled a goal back early in the second half, but Spurs could not find an equaliser to force extra-time and Frank was roundly booed at the full-time whistle.Just a day after securing his £65mn move from Bournemouth, Semenyo was among the scorers as City crushed League One Exeter at the Etihad. Erling Haaland started but was remarkably not among the goals and was withdrawn at half-time. Rico Lewis scored twice, while Max Alleyne, Rodri, Rico Lewis, Tijjani Reijnders, Nico O’Riley and Ryan McAidoo were also on target for City and Exeter netted two own goals. Newcastle scored a 95th minute equaliser through Anthony Gordon’s penalty to make it 2-2 at St. James Park after 90 minutes. Both sides scored in extra-time as this time Bournemouth struck in stoppage time through Marcus Tavernier to force penalties. Aaron Ramsdale saved three spot-kicks as the Magpies prevailed 7-6 in a marathon shootout. Sunderland also needed penalties to beat Everton after a 1-1 draw. Robin Roefs saved all three of the Toffees spot-kicks in the shootout to send the Black Cats into round four. Premier League strugglers Wolves are now unbeaten in four games after thrashing Shrewsbury 6-1 thanks to a Jorgen Strand Larsen hat-trick. Fulham needed three goals in the final half hour to beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at Craven Cottage, but Burnley found Championship opposition an easier proposition in thrashing Millwall 5-1. Brentford cruised to a 2-0 win at financially stricken Sheffield on Wednesday. 

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup with a meek 2-1 home defeat to Brighton Sunday as Gabriel Martinelli’s hat-trick fired Arsenal to a 4-1 win at Portsmouth to reach round four. United interim boss Darren Fletcher could only watch on in horror as the Red Devils’ last chance of silverware this season and likely his chances of landing the job until the end of the season went up in smoke at Old Trafford. Fletcher’s men were left to rue not making more of a positive start before Brajan Gruda fired the visitors in front on 12 minutes from Danny Welbeck’s cross. The roles were reversed midway through the second half as Welbeck lashed into the top corner against his former club. There were persistent chants targeting United co-owners the Glazer family and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe as the discontent at Old Trafford grew. And any hope those in charge of the club had for a bounce following the removal of Ruben Amorim has proved very short-lived. Benjamin Sesko’s late header set up a grandstand finish, but it proved too little, too late for Fletcher. A red card for teenager Shea Lacey in stoppage time for dissent rounded off United’s miserable afternoon. Martinelli shrugged off the backlash to his clash with stricken Liverpool defender Conor Bradley as Arsenal reached the fourth round for the first time in three years. Championship side Portsmouth were dreaming of an upset against the Premier League leaders when they went in front after just three minutes through Colby Bishop. Mikel Arteta had made 10 changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Thursday. Martinelli drew stinging criticism for trying to push Bradley off the pitch in the closing stages after the Northern Irishman hit the ground with a serious knee injury. Liverpool confirmed the right-back will need surgery and will miss the rest of the season. The Brazilian apologised to Bradley after the game and did not seem affected by the furore at Fratton Park. “That’s personality, come in and talk on the pitch,” said Arteta. “To play for a big club you need a big personality because it can be that (being at the centre of a controversial incident), it can be an action that you miss, it can be something that costs you a game, and three days later there is a game, so you need to lift yourself up and make it count.” Arsenal could rely on their threat from set-pieces to turn the tie around. The Pompey lead lasted only five minutes as Andre Dozzell turned into his own net under pressure from Christian Norgaard. Martinelli then flicked in the first of his three goals before Noni Madueke missed the chance to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot when the England international fired wide. Gabriel Jesus teed up Martinelli to kill the tie off early in the second period before he completed his hat-trick from another Arsenal corner. West Ham eased the mounting pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo as new signing Taty Castellanos scored his first goal for the club to beat QPR 2-1 after extra-time. Castellanos has been signed to dig them out of trouble at the bottom of the Premier League and the £26mn arrival from Lazio bulleted home a header from Crysencio Summerville’s cross to secure a much-needed win. Leeds needed a second-half fightback to beat Derby County 3-1 and book their place in the fourth round. League One Mansfield held off Sheffield United to book their place in round four with a 4-3 win at Bramall Lane. Norwich, Hull and West Brom also progressed to the last 32. 

Manchester United interim coach Darren Fletcher said Tuesday he did not think he would manage the club in his “wildest dreams” as he prepares for his first game following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese was axed on Monday after 14 months at Old Trafford after an explosive post-match interview following his team’s 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday. Under-18s coach and former United player Fletcher was put in charge for today’s match at Burnley and faced the press for the first time Tuesday. The former Scotland international is expected to remain in place until the club appoints a caretaker boss, with United planning to name Amorim’s permanent successor at the end of the season. Fletcher, 41, said the past 24 hours at Old Trafford had been “surreal”. “It’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team,” he said. “I don’t even think it was in my wildest dreams that that was something that could potentially happen, even thinking about playing for the club and stuff like that. But to lead out the team is an amazing honour and something I am really proud to do. It’s not (happened) in the circumstances that I expected it to happen so that obviously is something that doesn’t sit quite easy with me, but I just have to think I’ve got a job to do and I’ve got to lead the team tomorrow and think of the great honour and pride in doing that.” Fletcher said conversations with the club’s hierarchy had focused on today’s game against struggling Burnley and they would speak again after the match. Fletcher, United’s technical director between 2021 and 2024, was asked whether he wanted to try to earn the manager’s job on a full-time basis. “Honestly it’s not something I’ve thought about,” he said. “I’m focusing on Burnley. I think that discussion is for after the game. There has been that much going on and it has all happened so quickly that all my concentration, efforts and thoughts have gone into Burnley.” 

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said the Premier League leaders must win trophies if they were to be remembered like the “Invincibles” side that last won the title for the Gunners in 2004.Arsene Wenger’s side romped to the title 22 years ago without losing a single league game. Arsenal head into Thursday’s clash at home to reigning champions Liverpool with a six-point lead at the top of the table, although Manchester City and Aston Villa can cut that gap as they were in action late last night. Arteta’s men, runners-up for the past three seasons, have two more points and four more goals than Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ managed after 20 games. But the Spaniard said those stats matter little unless Arsenal go on to win the league. “No because ‘the Invincibles’ won a lot,” Arteta told his pre-match press conference on whether his side can be considered better than Arsenal’s last title winners. “They won consistently, and they created a history and a legacy, and we have to do that.” The lone major piece of silverware won by Arsenal in six years under Arteta remains the 2020 FA Cup “There are a lot of stats, but in the last two or three years we have managed more points and more goals than ever before. But at the end, we have to translate that to major trophies,” he added. “Probably doing what we are doing now would have been enough (in 2004), but now it’s not, and we have to make the margins even bigger.” Arsenal lost 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield back in August in what was billed as an early showdown between title rivals. The defending champions head to the Emirates 14 points off the top after a difficult second season for Arne Slot, but Arteta insisted the Reds remain “a superb side”. The Gunners remain without sidelined defenders Riccardo Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera but are “monitoring the load” on Kai Havertz as the Germany forward intensifies his training while continuing to recover from a long-term leg injury. Arteta, meanwhile, said he was “sad” to see rival boss Ruben Amorim sacked by Manchester United on Monday after just 14 months in charge at Old Trafford. The Portuguese coach’s exit followed growing tensions with senior United officials, including director of football Jason Wilcox, over recent days. United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe had previously suggested Amorim would be given at least three years in charge, citing Arsenal’s patience with Arteta as an example to follow. Appointed in 2019, Arteta endured a rocky start to his time in charge of Arsenal. But they are now a commanding 17 points ahead of sixth-placed United, who won just 25 of 63 games in all competitions under Amorim. “I can only talk about what I have experienced and it’s always sad to see a colleague losing his job, obviously,” said Arteta. “We know where we are and I think you need support from the ownership, from your staff, from players. At the end of the day, you need to win a lot of football matches if you want to stay in the job, and that’s the reality and the nature of our job.” 

Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United on Monday, bringing a dramatic end to his turbulent 14-month spell as manager of the struggling Premier League giants.The dismissal of the Portuguese follows growing tensions with Old Trafford bosses, including director of football Jason Wilcox, over recent days.The club, sixth in the Premier League table after a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday, issued a statement saying Amorim had "departed his role as head coach of Manchester United", thanking him for his service."The club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change," United said in their statement."This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."Current under-18s coach Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder and technical director between 2021 and 2024, will take charge of the team against struggling Burnley on Wednesday.The BBC said the club were planning to appoint a caretaker boss for the rest of the season.Names in the frame for the full-time job include Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea last week, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and former England manager Gareth Southgate.Rising tensionsAmorim had hinted at deep frustrations on Friday, suggesting he was not being fully backed in the transfer market.And he made a string of eye-catching comments after Sunday's draw at Elland Road, where he stressed he was United's manager rather than "just the coach".The Portuguese told the scouting department and Wilcox "to do their job" during a blockbuster end to a post-match press conference that raised major doubts over his future.And he repeatedly suggested to the media that he would leave when his contract expired in 18 months' time.But reports on Monday said United's decision to axe their manager was due to the lack of progress rather than a power struggle.The dismissal is a dismal end for Amorim, who won just 25 of his 63 games at United in all competitions during the shortest reign for a permanent manager since David Moyes was sacked just eight months into his tenure in 2014.He had the worst win ratio (32 percent), the worst goals-conceded-per-game ratio (1.53) and the lowest clean-sheet ratio (15 percent) of any United boss in the Premier League.Amorim arrived at Old Trafford to replace Erik ten Hag in November 2024 as one of the most sought-after coaches in world football following a successful stint at Sporting Lisbon, where he won two league titles.But he was powerless to stop United's slide to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League - their worst campaign for 51 years - at one stage describing his team as "maybe the worst" in the history of the club.Amorim had the chance to end the 2024/25 campaign on a high in Bilbao but United lost the Europa League final against Tottenham and missed out on European football this season as a result.The club backed their manager in the summer transfer window, spending more than £200 million ($269 million) on new signings including Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha.But they have again flattered to deceive, winning just eight of their 20 league games so far and falling 17 points behind leaders Arsenal.Amorim has been hit by injuries and a number of players are on Africa Cup of Nations duty but he has been criticised for sticking rigidly to his preferred 3-4-3 formation despite evidence it was not the best fit for his players.His exit leaves the club searching for their seventh permanent manager since the retirement of Alex Ferguson, who left as a Premier League champion in 2013.Since then, apart from the occasional cup success, the 20-time English champions have been also-rans, overshadowed by bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes told Portuguese media the Premier League club had wanted to sell him this summer after receiving interest from Saudi Arabia.But the 31-year-old claimed manager Ruben Amorim still had him in his plans and that convinced him to stay at Old Trafford."My passion and empathy for the club were the same, but there comes a point where money becomes more important to them than you," Fernandes told Canal 11, a channel owned by the Portuguese Football Federation, on Monday."The club wanted me to leave. I said it to the directors and I think they didn't have the courage to make that decision because the coach wanted me."But if I had said I wanted to leave, even if the coach wanted me to stay, the club would have let me go."Fernandes, who has 103 goals in 307 appearances for Man Utd in all competitions since arriving in 2020, was also reportedly hurt by the club hierarchy's willingness to part ways with him."The feeling I got from the club was, 'if you leave, it's not so bad for us'. That hurt me a little," he said, according to comments reported on the website of Portuguese sports daily A Bola.The playmaker said he had considered a move to Saudi Arabia, following in the footsteps of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo who made the move to the kingdom in 2023 after his acrimonious departure from Old Trafford.
