Qatar has launched a new platform, "Doha Investment," to manage and grow the Qatar Investment Authority's domestic portfolio, as the prime minister unveiled a five-year pipeline of projects and investment opportunities worth more than $60bn.His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani made the announcement in his opening remarks at the Qatar Economic Forum – Powered by Bloomberg, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.The prime minister said the platform builds on three decades of work to construct world-class infrastructure, institutions and companies, and marks Qatar's push to widen private sector participation as a driver of growth. It will back leading companies, help startups scale, deepen capital markets and draw in international capital and expertise, he said, adding that its success would be judged by how far it helps build a more competitive, resilient and diversified economy with a bigger role for the private sector.Over the next five years, Qatar is set to launch new infrastructure projects worth around $38.5bn, including public-private partnerships, with initial tendering to begin immediately, the prime minister said. Alongside these, real estate and hospitality projects are expected to draw private investment of $22.5bn, among them the Simaisma Beach project, projected to attract about $5.8bn, with more announcements to follow. Combined, he said, the projects and opportunities represent a value exceeding $60bn over five years.The prime minister said the aim is to pair public infrastructure with private capital and international expertise, with Qatar seeking partners bringing technological innovation, market access and a commitment to long-term partnership.**media[494053]**He added that Qatar does not underestimate the current climate of uncertainty but will not let short-term disruption dictate its long-term direction, and that it works to bolster regional stability through diplomacy while pursuing reform, resilience and growth through investment.Diplomacy and economic stability go hand in hand, he said, since diplomacy safeguards the conditions that let people trade, invest and plan ahead — and lasting security cannot rest on cycles of escalation and retaliation, or on arrangements that leave any state permanently exposed.On the current regional crisis, the prime minister said talks would need to begin with security and de-escalation before moving to energy supplies, shipping routes and the fate of investment plans. The region needs a framework built on respect for sovereignty, in which no state threatens another, he said, adding that Qatar would remain a committed mediator, a reliable energy supplier and a long-term investment partner.He described recent regional events as an "earthquake" whose aftershocks have reached far beyond the region's borders, upending long-held assumptions about security and stability. Doha, he said, has worked with regional and international partners to keep communication channels open, ease tensions and support diplomatic understandings — recognising that economic resilience depends on institutions, infrastructure and partnerships built before crises hit.The crisis tested these foundations as activity was disrupted and costs rose, he said, yet Qatar's financial system kept running and companies carried on operating — resilience he attributed to years of preparation under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.The prime minister affirmed that Qatar's economic fundamentals remain solid, and said the expansion of the North Field would reinforce the country's standing as a reliable energy supplier and support its diversification drive — energy, he said, is Qatar's source of strength, diversification its secret to resilience, and technology its future.

Qatar remains committed to advancing its long-term economic expansion plans, including a new energy project that will double liquefied natural gas production capacity to 145mn tonnes per year by 2030 despite the damage sustained by facilities.The commitment was highlighted Sunday during an interview featuring Qatar Central Bank Governor His Excellency Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani with Bloomberg TV on the sidelines of the Special Edition of the Qatar Economic Forum 2026, Powered by Bloomberg, convened in New York alongside the UN General Assembly.“The non-hydrocarbon sector grew by 3.5% despite regional challenges, while the State of Qatar successfully reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio from 60% to 40%, while maintaining a sovereign credit rating of AA,” noted Sheikh Bandar, who is also chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA).He said the contribution of the non-hydrocarbon sector to GDP increased from 40% in 2011 to approximately 70% in recent years, supported by the accumulation of fiscal surpluses over the past years, as well as the establishment of reserves and funds that provide the economy with greater resilience in addressing the challenges.According to Sheikh Bandar, Qatar enjoys a strong external financial position and substantial reserves held by the central bank, alongside operating one of the largest sovereign wealth funds globally.These financial strengths enhance the country's ability to navigate challenges and capitalise on growth opportunities as regional conditions improve, he pointed out.“The Qatar Investment Authority is pursuing a long-term investment strategy aimed at creating sustainable value for future generations, with an increasing focus on technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation, particularly in the US, while continuing to invest across a range of sectors in support of its broader diversification strategy,” he said.Meanwhile, the QCB is implementing 18 artificial intelligence projects, four of which have been completed, Sheikh Bandar noted.“These projects have contributed to reducing costs and accelerating workflows, while the QCB remains committed to continued investment in this technology and to leveraging its potential to further develop and enhance its operations,” he said.Sheikh Bandar added that the central bank remains committed to continued investment in technology to enhance its overall operations.

Sheikha Al Mayassa: Qatar's culture rooted in heritage

Qatar’s cultural development has been guided by an ambition to remain firmly connected to its heritage and identity while engaging with ideas and communities around the world, according to Qatar Museums (QM) chairperson Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.“It was about rooting ourselves in our heritage and our identity, but also having a global perspective to the world,” Sheikha Al Mayassa said during a conversation with internationally acclaimed artist Olafur Eliasson at the recently concluded 15th Berlin Art Week 2026.The talk, ‘Art, Patronage and Cultural Stewardship,’ explores cultural investment, artistic practice, environmental responsibility, and the relationship between artists and cultural institutions.Speaking about Qatar’s cultural development over several decades, Sheikha Al Mayassa placed the country’s museums, public art programme and international cultural partnerships within a wider national vision guided by human development and the growth of a knowledge-based society.**media[492406]**“Bringing art is not my effort; it is a national vision that I belong to. I belong to a family that believes in human development and investing in people as its first and foremost resource,” she said. “We looked at how culture can engage our communities, bring us to our history and our past, which is why we opened the Museum of Islamic Art as our first project, followed by Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Qatar.”She added: “It was about rooting ourselves in our heritage and our identity, but also having a global perspective to the world. In parallel to that, we were creating opportunities for cultural diplomacy.”This approach has shaped QM’s development of cultural institutions and public art across the country, while establishing partnerships and exchanges with artists and organisations internationally. Sheikha Al Mayassa described this work as part of long-term national planning in which cultural infrastructure is accompanied by investment in people, knowledge and creative talent.The conversation with Eliasson drew on a relationship spanning more than a decade. The artist has undertaken several major projects in Qatar, including the permanent public artwork Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day, unveiled in 2022 in the desert of northern Qatar, just north of Al Zubarah, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013.In 2023, QM also staged Olafur Eliasson: The Curious Desert, his first solo exhibition in the Gulf region. Presented at the National Museum of Qatar and at a site in the Qatari desert, the exhibition considered the natural environment through installations responding to sunlight, water, wind, movement and perception.Sheikha Al Mayassa said Eliasson’s approach showed how collaboration with an artist could extend beyond an exhibition and contribute to wider conversations around knowledge and the environment.“It was about taking the knowledge from what we have and improving it with the process of the exhibition,” she said. “You wanted to leave something behind after the exhibition, and that was very important for you — not just in terms of an art legacy, but also knowledge creation and sharing of information that can empower the community to be better environmentalists and to take more care of our environment.”The conversation also addressed how museums and cultural programmes can introduce younger audiences to subjects including sustainability, environmental responsibility and changing social attitudes. Sheikha Al Mayassa said providing young people with knowledge can encourage them to consider new ideas and eventually develop their own solutions.**media[492407]**She also spoke about the relationship between Qatar’s contemporary cultural programme and its heritage, citing Eliasson’s permanent installation near Ain Mohammed, where visitors can encounter the artist’s contemporary work alongside a restored heritage village and aspects of Qatari cultural life.The juxtaposition, she said, creates an experience in which local heritage and contemporary artistic practice exist alongside one another — an approach that captures Qatar’s wider cultural ambition to remain grounded in its history while maintaining an outward-looking international perspective.Moreover, the discussion also turned to the human experience behind cultural planning. Responding to Eliasson’s comments on art’s ability to connect with people on a deeply personal level, Sheikha Al Mayassa said that people remain at the core of Qatar’s cultural investment. “My job is to facilitate and empower, and design spaces for human beings to engage and for artists to create,” she said. “When I say our investment has been about human development, it’s human beings at the core of it.”She noted that achieving this requires long-term planning, from developing museums and cultural districts to conserving heritage buildings and integrating contemporary art into public spaces. Qatar’s cultural plans, she said, are often developed over five, 10 or 15 years, giving institutions and programmes time to respond to the communities they serve.She also pointed to Qatar’s current cultural calendar as an example of providing audiences with different entry points into art, heritage and contemporary ideas. The Qatar Creates Fall/Winter 2026–27 season features exhibitions and programmes across Qatar Museums and its partner institutions, spanning modern and contemporary art, design, heritage, fashion, photography and public art.
