Jason holder stood out with figures of 4-24 in an inspired pace attack to set up a four-wicket win for Gujarat Titans in a thrilling IPL contest against Punjab Kings Sunday. Pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj set the tone with two wickets in the first over of the match as hosts Gujarat reduced top of the table Punjab to 47-5 before they managed 163-9 in Ahmedabad. Gujarat also suffered from regular wickets in their chase but opener Sai Sudharsan’s 57 and an unbeaten 40 off 23 balls by Washington Sundar guided the team home with one ball to spare. Needing 11 to win from the last over, Sundar, a left-handed batter, kept his nerve and smacked Marcus Stoinis for a winning six on the penultimate delivery. Shubman Gill-led Gujarat stay fifth in the 10-team table with four teams on 12 points each. Punjab, led by Shreyas Iyer, still hold the top spot with 13 points after they went down to just their second defeat in the season. Top four teams after the league stage will qualify for the playoffs. Punjab attempted to defend their modest total after impact substitute Vijaykumar Vyshak took 2-30 including Jos Buttler, for 25, and the left-handed Sudharsan in the 15th over. Gujarat slowed down in their chase in front of disciplined bowling and good fielding, but Sundar stood firm Earlier Siraj rattled Punjab with two wickets in two balls upfront including Cooper Connolly caught behind for a duck. Siraj’s new-ball partner Kagiso Rabada took down Prabhsimran Singh for 15 and West Indies pace bowler Holder came in as the third seamer to push Punjab on the backfoot. Holder dismissed Nehal Wadhera and then Iyer but Marcus Stoinis, who made 40, and Suryansh Hedge, who hit 57, put on a defiant stand of 79 off 44 balls. Shedge was impressive in his 29-ball blitz laced with three fours and five huge sixes and got good support from Australia’s Stoinis. Marco Jansen contributed with 20 to boost the total but it was not enough to stop Gujarat from winning on their home turf. BRIEF SCORESGujarat Titans 167 for 6 (Sai Sudharsan 57, Washington 40*, Arshdeep 2-24, Vyshak 2-31) beat Punjab Kings 163 for 9 (Shedge 57, Stoinis 40, Holder 4-24, Rabada 2-22) by four wickets 

Ruturaj Gaikwad led from the front with an unbeaten 67 as Chennai Super Kings hammered fellow IPL giants Mumbai Indians by eight wickets Saturday to stay in the hunt for the playoffs. In a clash of two teams sharing 10 titles between them, Chennai kept Mumbai, who elected to bat first, down to 159-7 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Captain Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma then put on an unbeaten stand of 98 to steer the team home with 11 balls to spare and bounce back from a big defeat in their previous outing. Gaikwad anchored the chase and Sharma hit the winning four in his 54 as five-time champions Chennai moved to sixth place in the 10-team table. “It was about getting a good start and then one of the batters had to go deep,” said Gaikwad. “Feels good to bat till the end. I wanted to make sure to take the team to the end if I got a start.” Mumbai, who have also won the IPL five times and lost their second match to Chennai this season, languish in the ninth spot with seven defeats in nine matches. “Not the season,” said Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya. “They played better, they bowled better, they fielded better and they batted better.” Chennai lost an early wicket but Gaikwad struck his second successive half-century to keep his side on track. Pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah took down Sanju Samson, caught behind for 11, in his first over before Urvil Patel counter-attacked in his 12-ball 24. Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar bowled Patel to raise some hopes for Mumbai, but Gaikwad stood firm to raise his fifty from 34 balls to put Chennai on course. Opener Gaikwad hit five fours and two sixes in his 48-ball knock and was name dplayer of the match. The bowlers set up victory as left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad struck two key blows including Ryan Rickelton, for 37, and Tilak Varma, for five, before medium-pace bowler Anshul Kamboj took 3-32. BRIEF SCORESChennai Super Kings 160 for 2 (Gaikwad 67*, Kartik 54*, Bumrah 1-20) beat Mumbai Indians 159 for 7 (Dhir 57, Rickelton 37, Kamboj 3-32, Noor 2-26) by eight wickets

There were growing calls Tuesday for teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi to be fast-tracked into India’s senior national team after slamming a 17-ball 52 to launch his IPL season.The batsman turned 15 last week, making him eligible to represent India under International Cricket Council rules, having already starred for his country at youth level.On Monday he smacked four fours and five sixes as Rajasthan Royals chased down a target of 128 with 7.5 overs to spare against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati.The teenager made history in last year’s IPL in a dazzling debut season highlighted by a 35-ball century, the second fastest in the history of the T20 tournament.Spin bowling great Anil Kumble compared Suryavanshi to batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who made his full international debut aged 16.“Yes, absolutely. If a player shows this level of consistency, he should be fast-tracked, just like Sachin Tendulkar,” Kumble said on JioHotstar.Suryavanshi has already made his mark at youth international level, hammering 175 off just 80 balls as India beat England in the Under-19 World Cup final in February. Former India batter Ambati Rayudu described Suryavanshi as “a cut above a lot of youngsters in the country”.“He’s a talent that will definitely do wonders for Indian cricket,” Rayudu said on ESPNcricinfo. “I don’t know when, but definitely in the future.” Inside the Rajasthan Royals camp, the leadership group has been focused on shielding the prodigy from the pressures of early fame.“What I tell him is that you’re going to play 14 games (in this season’s IPL) and regardless of what goes on in the game, it shouldn’t bother you,” captain Riyan Parag said.“What goes around in the media shouldn’t bother you.”He added following Monday’s latest eye-catching display: “Like everyone in the stands, we also had this feeling of ‘wow’, wondering how he is able to do this.“He is a talent and I am very glad that he is in our team, and not the opponent’s,” he said. 

Bangladesh’s cricket board said Tuesday it had repeated its refusal to travel to India for next month’s T20 World Cup during talks with the ICC governing body. With ties tense between the two countries, Bangladesh wants the International Cricket Council to shift their World Cup games from India to co-hosts Sri Lanka, citing security concerns.The World Cup begins on February 7 and Bangladesh are scheduled to play their four group matches in India. The row erupted on January 3, when India forced Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman to quit the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mustafizur, who has played in the IPL for other teams in previous editions, was snapped up at auction in December by Kolkata for more than $1mn. His sacking sparked fury in Dhaka.Tuesday, during a video conference with the ICC, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said it had “reiterated its request for the ICC to consider relocating Bangladesh’s matches outside India”. Political relations between India and Bangladesh soured after a mass uprising in Dhaka in 2024 toppled then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, a close ally of New Delhi. India’s foreign ministry last month condemned what it called “unremitting hostility against minorities” in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, has accused India of exaggerating the scale of the violence. “The BCB reaffirmed its position regarding the decision not to travel to India, citing security concerns,” the BCB said in a statement. “While the ICC highlighted that the tournament itinerary has already been announced and requested the BCB to reconsider its stance, the Board’s position remains unchanged,” the statement added. The ICC have not commented. The BCB said discussions with the ICC continue to “explore possible solutions”, it added, but that it “remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of its players, officials and staff”.Bangladesh, led by Litton Das, are placed ninth in the ICC T20 rankings. They have played all the nine editions of the tournament, but have never qualified for the semi-finals.
