West Indies and Pakistan meet at Test cricket's newest venue in Trinidad on Saturday at the start of a two-match series in which the home side will be enjoying rare favoured status against the unsettled visitors.Brian Lara Stadium, located in the south of the island, has previously hosted one-day and T20 internationals along with regional first-class fixtures.It becomes the nation's second Test match venue and 13th in the West Indies, drawing it alongside Queen's Park Oval in the capital, Port of Spain, the venue of the second Test a week later.Roston Chase enjoyed his first match and series wins as West Indies Test captain just three weeks ago when the Caribbean team demolished Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs and then played out a draw in the second and final Test, both matches played in Antigua.Chase missed the recent ODI series loss to New Zealand with an injury to his right index finger."Roston is a fighter. I know he's not going to want to miss any Test cricket," West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said."I'm pretty sure Dr. Byam (team physio Denis Byam) has a way of keeping guys on the park, so I'm pretty sure Roston will be ready for the first Test."It was their first home Test series triumph since a 2-0 sweep of Bangladesh in 2022, a result which also gave them their last consecutive series wins anywhere as the whitewash of the Bangladeshis was preceded by a notable 1-0 home triumph over England in a three-Test contest.West Indies are not expected to make significant alterations to the winning combination from the Sri Lankan series, although left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican is likely to come into consideration at the expense of fast-medium bowler Anderson Phillip given the expectation of a pitch favouring spin later in the match.In stark contrast, Pakistan have once again revamped their squad in the aftermath of a 2-0 series loss in Bangladesh two months ago with senior batsman Babar Azam returning as captain in place of Shan Masood in hope of reviving their Test fortunes.Babar and opening batsman Azan Awais both compiled hundreds in the lone warm-up match against a West Indies Select XI at the weekend while most of the other main batsmen also got confidence-boosting runs.However the most encouraging aspect of the match in batting-friendly conditions for the tourists was the bowling of pacer Mohammad Ali, who took five wickets in the first innings and will be relied upon, together with the other members of the restructured pace armoury, to give Pakistan a chance to end a miserable run of seven consecutive Test match losses away from home.Their last visit to the Caribbean in 2021 finished in a 1-1 draw after two Tests in Kingston while the teams' most recent Test encounters were in the spin-dominant Multan in January of 2025 when the West Indies trumped Pakistan at their own game in the second match to also leave that series at 1-1.This meeting of two unpredictable sides carries the additional dimension of intervention by the elements as the July/August period is usually one of significant rainfall in the southern Caribbean.While Trinidad has enjoyed hot, sunny conditions in the days leading up to the first Test, there is certainly no guarantee that such pleasant cricketing weather will be sustained over the fortnight of this short series. 

India wonderkid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scored a maiden Twenty20 international half-century in a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday.Put in to bat after losing the toss in the first of three matches, Zimbabwe made a meagre 125-7 in 20 overs with all-rounder Wessly Madhevere (39) top scoring.Led by 15-year-old prodigy Sooryavanshi, who struck four sixes and four fours in an 18-ball 50, India cruised to 126-3 with 40 balls to spare.Sooryavanshi became the youngest cricketer to represent India by debuting in a 4-0 T20I drubbing by England this month. He scored 42 runs in three innings.After his whirlwind 50 in Harare, Sooryavanshi was out when he got a thick outside edge to a Richard Ngarava delivery and was caught at deep third man by Ben Curran.He departed with the tourists 68-2. Then, wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan (35) and unbeaten captain Shreyas Iyer (28 not out) ensured India ended a dismal recent T20I run.Before four losses in England, one by an Indian record 125 runs, the reigning T20I world champions lost another series 2-0 in Ireland.Victory at Harare Sports Club was a welcome relief for Iyer -- it ended a seven-match winless run since he inherited the captaincy."I think the boys were tremendous. Could not have been happier with my first win," the skipper told reporters."There was bounce from a good length and it was also variable. I felt it was there in both innings. We are going to play two more matches here, so this performance gives everyone some confidence."Madhevere was run out after a 58-run sixth-wicket stand with Tadiwanashe Marumani (27 not out). An unwise attempt to secure a second run led to his downfall. Brief scores: Zimbabwe 125-7 in 20 overs (W. Madhevere 39; M. Yadav 2-18, P. Yadav 2-19) v India 126-3 in 13.2 overs (V. Sooryavanshi 50, I. Kishan 35; B. Muzarabani 2-26). Result: India won by seven wickets.Series: India lead 1-0 ahead of matches on Saturday and Sunday.  

Middle-order batter Rahmat Shah has been appointed captain of Afghanistan's Test and one-day international squads, the ⁠country's cricket board announced on Wednesday.The change in ⁠leadership comes after Hashmatullah Shahidi stepped down on Tuesday, ending a five-year stint during which Afghanistan finished sixth at the 2023 World Cup defeating former champions England, Pakistan and Sri ⁠Lanka."The Afghanistan Cricket Board appreciates Hashmatullah Shahidi's valuable service, dedication, and leadership during his tenure as captain and wishes him continued success in his future endeavours," the board said in a statement."With ⁠extensive experience in international ⁠cricket, ⁠leadership, and the team's overall structure, Rahmat Shah is well positioned to take on this important responsibility." The elevation to captaincy is a natural progression for Shah considering he was the vice-captain since May 2021 when Shahidi was announced captain. He is also Afghanistan's leading run-getter in Tests and ODIs.Rahmat, who has served as Shahidi's deputy since 2021, will begin his captaincy with a five-match ODI series in Ireland next month.  

Australia captain Pat Cummins, fellow fast bowler Josh Hazlewood and veteran spinner Nathan Lyon have returned from injury to be included in a 13-man squad for next month's two-Test home series against Bangladesh. The trio were named on Tuesday for matches in Darwin (Aug. 13-17) and Mackay (Aug. 22-26), which form part of the World Test Championship cycle, after playing only three Tests between them during the Ashes in the last home summer. Australia's "big four" of Cummins, Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Lyon have not bowled together since the West Indies tour a year ago due to various injuries but chief selector George Bailey said it was too early to confirm whether they would all turn out against Bangladesh, despite being fit. "We won't be locking in an 11 this far out," Bailey told reporters in a video call on Tuesday. "We do know that across this two-test series, the depth is there." With 295 test wickets at an average of 24.21, 35-year-old Hazlewood has been one of Australia's most devastating bowlers but injuries have limited his output in recent years, including forcing him to miss the entire Ashes series with hamstring and Achilles problems. In his absence, 37-year-old seamer Scott Boland took 20 wickets in an excellent series in the 4-1 defeat of England, and Bailey was frank about the competition Hazlewood faces from the Victoria quick. "Scotty would never say it, but yeah, I think he's mounting a strong case that when you use the words of big three (fast bowlers), that he could be one of those," said Bailey.Hazlewood's recall means no place for Michael Neser despite the paceman's fine Ashes campaign. The squad is the first following opener Usman Khawaja's retirement, potentially creating opportunity at the top of the order. South Australia opener Jake Weatherald has been retained despite struggling during his debut test series in the Ashes when he averaged 22.33 across the five matches. The pocket-sized lefthander has yet to convince but Bailey said selectors saw positives in the opening combination with Travis Head during the Ashes. "Hopefully we do see some growth out of that (Ashes) and some understanding of what it takes for success at test level," he said. Cameron Green has also held onto his spot after a disappointing Ashes with bat and ball, and is one of two all-rounders in the squad with Beau Webster. Josh Inglis was retained as a potential middle order batting option. Australia sit top of the World Test Championship table midway through the cycle and will look to cement their place with a series win over fourth-placed Bangladesh ahead of a tough tour of South Africa in October. Australia squad: Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster..

The World Cricketers' Association (WCA) said on Friday it is "concerned" that the format of next year's World Cup has been revised without consulting the players who are set to bear the brunt of it.The men's 50-over showpiece, to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, will remain a 14-team event, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday introduced a "Super Series" round for the three lowest-ranked qualified sides.One of them will advance to the main group stage, a change that the ICC said would ensure a "meaningful contest.""The ICC is entitled to determine the structure of its global events," WCA Chief Executive Tom Moffat said in a statement."However, when commitments are made to the game, qualification pathways are established and countries and players invest years pursuing those opportunities, significant changes deserve genuine consultation, transparency and a clear explanation."It is difficult to reconcile the game's stated ambition of growing cricket globally with decisions that reduce meaningful opportunities at pinnacle events for some of the countries that stood to benefit most from genuine expansion."The international players' body said the change in format raised "important questions about transparency." DISAPPOINTMENT AT THE DECISIONNetherlands captain Scott Edwards was among several players to voice disappointment at the decision."Qualifying for an ODI World Cup is a huge achievement for any country, so when the reality of that opportunity changes after years of planning, it's incredibly disappointing," Edwards said."The ICC talks a lot about growing the game globally, but decisions like this make it harder for associate nations to play against the best teams in the world."Ireland captain Paul Stirling underlined the value such teams bring."The smaller and associate countries have consistently proven to add value and interest at global events," he said."The football World Cup we've just witnessed is testament to that in other sports and it would be great to see cricket take a similar approach to maximise opportunities for the game."

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday a revamped format for the men's 2027 one-day international World Cup that could lead to an additional fixture between arch-rivals India and Pakistan.While next year's edition in southern Africa remains a 14-team competition, the three lowest-ranked qualifiers will now take part in a preliminary round with just one of them progressing to a 12-strong main group stage.That will now feature just two pools of six, with a new 'super seven' stage replacing the previous 'super six' round-robin.The restructure comes after concerns were expressed about the prospect of too many dead rubbers, which in turn would lead to sparse crowds at venues, and the number of foregone conclusions at the recent T20 World Cup.Significantly, there will be no quarter-finals with the 50-over tournament denied the further jeopardy and interest that comes with an extra round of clear-cut knockout matches.The ICC, however, insisted in a statement that the new ODI World Cup structure "creates greater context, competitiveness and consequence during the event."An additional team in the round-robin phase also increases the prospects of an extra match between India and Pakistan.The passion for cricket in the sub-continent, which in turn generates huge broadcast rights and commercial revenues for the ICC, makes a match between India and Pakistan the most lucrative in the sport.But India and Pakistan no longer meet outside of ICC events, with political tensions between the bordering nations meaning they are effectively barred by their own governments from facing each other.The last bilateral series India played in Pakistan was in 2006 (Test and ODI series).Another change approved at the ICC's recent annual board meeting in Edinburgh will see the next men's T20 World Cup in 2028 remain a 20-team competition, but with 10 sides qualifying from the group stage rather than eight.The two best performing teams in the 'Super 10' will automatically secure a semi-final spot, with a new eliminator stage to decide their opponents.ICC loans Cricket West Indies $12.82mnIn a separate announcement, the ICC said it had approved an $12.82 million loan to Cricket West Indies "to support the member board".Unlike other leading international cricket teams, the West Indies are a regional side, with the relative economic weakness of its constituent Caribbean islands and territories, allied to the travel distances involved, putting CWI at a considerable financial disadvantage compared to the 'Big Three' of India, England and Australia.During the recent women's T20 World Cup in England, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews lamented an "unfair" funding ecosystem following her cash-strapped side's eight-wicket semi-final thrashing by Australia."The reason we were so successful back in 2012 to 2016 is because women's cricket was based off pure talent at that time," said Matthews."The minute that investment comes into the picture, we've seen the gap widen a lot...I feel like it's a bit unfair sometimes."Will Glenwright, the ICC's head of global development, responded to Matthews's comments by telling AFP in an interview earlier this month: "I think the one truth that is perpetual is there's never enough money - the members are always crying out for more."

Cricket's governing body said Monday it would trial the use of pink-coloured balls in Test matches to maximise play during bad light.The red balls usually used in Tests are not easily visible in fading light, while white balls used in limited-overs matches have been found to be not durable enough for the longer format.Pink balls are already used in day-night Tests played under lights.The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement its executive board had approved the "trialling the use of a pink ball in Test matches, with prior agreement from both teams, to maximise play in case of anticipated bad light".The global cricketing body said it had also given approval for new "research on lighting technology for match officials and venues to reduce lost play due to poor light"."Our discussions... have reinforced the ICC's commitment to governance, administration and the growth of cricket globally," said council chief Jay Shah, following a meeting in India's Ahmedabad.ICC suspends Cricket Canada's membership  The International Cricket Council has suspended Canada over breaches of the national board's membership obligations, weeks after ‌the global governing body's anti-corruption ​unit launched an ‌investigation into Cricket Canada.The Canadian national ‌team ⁠will ‌still be able to ‌participate in ICC events, and funding to ⁠operate the teams will be provided through a controlled mechanism, the global governing body said on Monday.A documentary aired in April by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation had made allegations of corruption in ​the governance of Cricket Canada involving several players and officials, including match manipulation and threats of ‌violence.Media reports said ⁠the anti-corruption ​investigation was launched soon after."The ICC ​board resolved to suspend Cricket Canada from ICC membership with immediate effect due to serious breaches of its membership obligations," the global body said in a statement a day after a meeting in Ahmedabad, India.Cricket Canada will have to follow a set of ‌conditions, aimed at ‌fixing its governance ⁠and administrative issues, to restore membership, the ⁠statement added."The ⁠progress against these conditions will be monitored by the ICC normalisation committee, supported by ICC management, with reinstatement of membership subject to the board being satisfied that the ​conditions have been fully met," the ICC said.The ICC also suspended the United States national body, USA Cricket, over membership rule breaches last year. The U.S. national teams continue to participate in ICC events and are set to compete at the Los ‌Angeles ​Olympics in 2028.
