Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov signed a five-year contract extension with the Premier League club on Saturday.Khusanov helped City win the FA Cup and League Cup last season, as well as finishing second in the Premier League.The 22-year-old centre-back joined City from French side Lens in January 2025.He has been capped 30 times for Uzbekistan and featured at the World Cup, playing in all three of their Group K matches."This is a great day for me and my family. I am really happy to extend my stay at City," Khusanov said."I've enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester and I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player."I have a new challenge now, which is to impress (new manager) Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that."Khusanov is the second City star to commit his long-term future to the club this week after England forward Phil Foden signed a new four-year deal.City's director of football Hugo Viana said: "We've been really pleased and impressed by Abdukodir's development since he arrived in England."We're seeing him grow into a brilliant young man and an outstanding defender - but we know this is only the beginning. His physical and technical abilities are top, he has all the assets needed to be a world-class centre-back."At just 22, his best years are all in front of him and his potential to get even better is clear for all to see." 

Enzo Maresca said Friday it is a "privilege" to follow Pep Guardiola as manager of Manchester City.The Italian also expects to begin his first season in charge of the Premier League giants with Rodri still in his squad, although the World Cup Golden Ball winner requires back surgery.Former Chelsea and Leicester boss Maresca was named as Guardiola's successor after the Catalan stepped down at the end of last season, having won 20 trophies during a superbly successful 10-year spell at the Etihad Stadium."I've said many times that I consider Pep probably the best coach in the world in the last 20, 25 years," Maresca told reporters in his first press conference as City manager. "But again, it's a challenge. It's nice. It's a privilege."Many clubs have struggled following the exit of serial trophy-winning managers, with both Manchester United and Arsenal experiencing a downturn following the departures of Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, respectively."The history of (following) the manager with many years in the same club always struggled a little bit - after Sir Alex, after Arsene," said Maresca. "It's a challenge to try to do the right things immediately for this organisation, for the fans, for everyone."Maresca, 46, is now in his third stint at City after coaching the club's elite development squad and serving as Guardiola's assistant during the 2022/23 treble-winning season.And he believes the strong foundations at the club will help him build on the success enjoyed under Guardiola."I think the organisation is the main thing," he added. "This club, this organisation, they had three managers in 17 years. This is not normal, it doesn't happen often."So this is probably one of the (reasons) that I'm confident we can do a great job," said Maresca, speaking a day after England midfielder Elliot Anderson completed his reported £116mn ($154mn) move to City from Nottingham Forest. 'Every manager wants Rodri'Spain midfielder Rodri, 30, meanwhile, has entered the final year of his City contract and has been linked with Real Madrid."We have to say that around big players there is always speculation," said Maresca. "I'm not worried about that. I think it's normal."Because they won the World Cup, and he was the best player or one of the best players, I think every manager wants to have Rodri."But now surgery on Monday, and he needs holiday. He needs to rest. He needs to recover and then he will be back here with us."Chelsea were unhappy with the manner of Maresca's New Year's Day departure from Stamford Bridge amid speculation linking him with City.A smiling Maresca, however, said Friday: "I feel quite lucky in terms of my former clubs - Leicester, Chelsea - I think we did a great job."In both clubs, the identity of the team was clear, the success of the team was clear, and I feel very lucky to be part of these clubs."But now we are here. That is the most important thing, just about City. Nothing to add." 

Manchester City forward Phil Foden gave a boost to new boss Enzo Maresca by signing a four-year contract extension on Wednesday.Foden's deal provides the England international with much-needed stability after a turbulent period.The 26-year-old had struggled for form during an injury-plagued period that included being left out of England's squad for the recent World Cup.He would have been out of contract at the end of the coming season, but his new deal, which contains an option for a further one-year extension, resolves his long-term future."Committing my future to City means everything to me. Playing for this club is all I've ever wanted to do and it's always an honour to wear the shirt," Foden said."It's not lost on me that I've been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we're always looking to the future and trying to win more."I can only thank the club, staff, team-mates and fans who continue to put their faith in me and trust that I give everything I can for City and I hope I'll be able to repay you for years to come."Foden has won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups and five League Cups with City since graduating from the club's youth academy.He is the most decorated player in City's history alongside Bernardo Silva and John Stones, who both left in the close-season.But a year ago, after struggling to replicate his form of previous campaigns, Foden opened up on his battles off the pitch with his mental health.Foden, who has 110 goals in 369 career appearances for City, started only seven of their last 26 games before boss Pep Guardiola resigned at the end of the season, with former Chelsea manager Maresca taking charge in June.Foden said he was looking forward to working with Maresca, who was part of Guardiola's coaching staff during the treble-winning campaign in 2022-23."So excited. Obviously, I've had Enzo before. When we had him in the treble season, he was brilliant," Foden said."His attention to detail, the small things that make a big difference, and even training with him at the moment, you can tell how good of a coach he is."The way he likes to play out from the back and play a lot of possession-based, it suits my game really well." 

Chelsea signed England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on Tuesday in a deal British media valued at £117mn ($157mn), a price that smashed the transfer record for a British player."The 23-year-old forward has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033," the London club posted on their web site.Rogers passed a medical on Monday following his return from the World Cup in North America."I'm so excited," said Rogers. "For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I've always admired since I was a kid," Rogers was quoted as saying by the club."I'm really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we've got and where the club is heading. That's why I'm here and I can't wait to get started."The transfer surpasses the previous record fee for a British player set by Manchester City when they signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116mn earlier in July.Rogers is the most expensive signing in Chelsea's history, eclipsing the £107mn paid to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.The swoop is a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, who convinced Rogers to leave Villa even though - unlike his former club - the west Londoners will not play in the Champions League in the coming season.Chelsea had been chasing Rogers for two years and beat Arsenal to his signature after the Premier League champions refused to match the eye-watering fee demanded by Villa.Rogers' departure is another blow for Villa boss Unai Emery after Youri Tielemans' move to Manchester United and Lucas Digne's expected switch to Paris Saint-Germain."A player with impeccable behaviour and commitment, Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the football club for both his service to the club and for his future career," said Villa on their website.Championship side Middlesbrough will receive 20 percent of the fee due to a sell-on clause in the deal when they sold Rogers in Villa in 2024.Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa and was a key figure in their Europa League final victory over Freiburg in May.'Cold' celebrationHe enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, netting 14 times and producing 11 assists in 55 appearances."He will always remain a core part of our recent great moments and memories," said Villa.Chelsea's new manager Xabi Alonso will have to find a way to fit Rogers, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and another close-season signing Geovany Quenda into his attacking midfield positions.Following Rogers' arrival at Stamford Bridge, Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho is expected to be sold by Chelsea before the transfer window shuts.Rogers is close friends with Palmer after their time together in Manchester City's youth academy.Palmer's famous 'cold' celebration was inspired by Rogers, who first struck the pose as a Middlesbrough player.Rogers' signing shows Chelsea can still attract top-class signings despite their failure to qualify for Europe after a dismal 10th place finish in the Premier League last season.Rogers will link up with Chelsea after taking a break following his role in England's run to the World Cup semi-finals. 

Former Liverpool and England star Kevin Keegan has died aged 75 after battling cancer, his family announced on Monday.Keegan, regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, was diagnosed with stage four cancer and underwent treatment in January."It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75," a statement from Keegan's family said."The former England player and manager had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments."Keegan, a dynamic striker nicknamed "mighty mouse", won the English top-flight title three times with Liverpool after starting his legendary career with lowly Scunthorpe.He also won the European Cup in 1977 and the FA Cup in 1974 during an iconic six-year spell at Anfield before joining German club Hamburg in 1977.Keegan, who scored 21 goals in 63 games for England, won the Bundesliga title with Hamburg in 1979 and helped them reach the European Cup final the following year.He was voted the European Player of the Year in 1978 and 1979.Keegan returned to England to play for Southampton and Newcastle, retiring in 1984 after starring in the Magpies' promotion to the top tier."We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential and deeply-loved figures in our club's history," Newcastle said in a statement."Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters."As a player, he brought world-class talent, ambition and belief to St James' Park, helping to transform perceptions of what Newcastle United could be."As a manager, he ignited our city. Kevin gave supporters hope and pride, and led a team whose style, spirit and passion captured the imagination of football fans around the world. He was so much more than an entertainer." Keegan's 'entertainers'Southampton added: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan. Kevin signed for the club in 1980 as the holder of the Ballon d'Or and brought great joy to fans at The Dell and across the football world."Turning to management in 1992, he led Newcastle to promotion to the Premier League in 1993.Keegan established them as a force in the top-flight, dubbed "the entertainers" as they finished runners-up to Manchester United after blowing a big lead in 1995-96 title race.His clashes with United manager Alex Ferguson - including his famous "I'd love it if we beat them" rant - took a toll on Keegan, who eventually resigned in 1997.He went on to manage Fulham before taking charge of England in a turbulent spell from 1999 to 2000, quitting the role of national team boss just hours after a 1-0 defeat against Germany at Wembley.England had failed to make it out of the group stage at Euro 2000 during Keegan's reign.Keegan also spent four years as Manchester City manager before finishing his managerial career with a brief return to Newcastle in 2008."Kevin, a double Ballon d'Or winner, was a much loved husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin's incredible medical team for all their support," his family's statement added."This is a hugely difficult time and they are requesting space and privacy." 

Andoni Iraola said on Monday he wants to enjoy the "magic" linked with being the manager of Liverpool but is determined his Anfield appointment does not change him fundamentally.The former Bournemouth boss is well aware of the magnitude of the position he holds, with Liverpool's demand for success exemplified by the fact he arrived in Merseyside as a result of the six-time European champions sacking Arne Slot a year after the Dutchman led the club to the Premier League title."Until I go through certain experiences I will not fully know but I'm here to experience those situations, I'm ready for it," said the 44-year-old Iraola in his first press conference as Liverpool manager."I understand this is a massive club. Everything that I'm going to say now, it's going to get the biggest scrutiny. You have to be very aware of the mistakes but I wouldn't like to be too careful.""I would like to act quite normal: I'm not going live in my bubble - just training ground, home. I would like also to go to the city, experience the city - I know some places."But it's part also of the magic of being the Liverpool manager and I would like not to change too much," the Spaniard added.Liverpool finished a disappointing fifth in the Premier League table last season, losing 12 matches, and Iraola understands the need to refresh his squad following the recent departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson."Obviously we've signed two players already (centre-back Jeremy Jacquet and winger Victor Munoz) but we need more players, we know this."As a coach, selfishly, I want the players here from day one ready to train for pre-season but understand football doesn't work like this. I know the club is working hard for those signings and I'm trying to help also."Iraola, meanwhile, wants to restore trust with fans frustrated by the team's performances under Slot by providing the kind of attacking football not seen at Anfield since the end of Jurgen Klopp's reign in 2024."I would like to give them a team that they can feel proud of," he said. "I think football - and especially Liverpool - is about connecting: connecting with the people, connecting with our supporters."We have to be a team that works hard, intense, aggressive, vertical so everyone can be identified and everyone can feel comfortable supporting this team." 

Manchester City have signed teenage winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester on a five-year deal, the Premier League giants announced Saturday.Monga made his English top-flight debut for the Foxes aged just 15 and has joined City despite interest from other leading clubs.The 17-year-old played 37 times for Leicester and was also the youngest player to start a game for the club.No fee has been disclosed but Monga's move is reported to be worth £10mn ($13mn) with add-ons on a contract which will take him through to 2031.Monga becomes the third English player to join Manchester City during the current transfer window, as new manager Enzo Maresca looks to refreshthe squad, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Pierce Charles and club-record signing Elliot Anderson.Monga featured for the first time in the top flight as a second-half substitute in Leicester's 3-0 defeat by Newcastle in April 2025 under Ruud van Nistelrooy and made his first start in the League Cup against Huddersfield in August 2025.The England under-19 international is also the third-youngest player to feature in the Premier League behind Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman."When I became aware that Manchester City were interested, I knew instantly this was the right choice for me," Monga told his new club's website."For any young footballer, to become part of this amazing club is a dream come true. This has been the best club in England over the past 10 years."And it has also handed opportunities to players from the academy like Phil Foden and Nico O'Reilly which shows that the pathway is there."It is a privilege to be here and I'm delighted to have joined." 

Manchester City on Monday hired former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca to lead the club into a new era after Pep Guardiola stepped down at the end of last season.Maresca agreed a three-year contract with City after being forced to wait several weeks to seal his move to the Etihad Stadium."Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me," said Maresca, who previously coached Leicester in the Championship and Chelsea in the Premier League."City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively."The 46-year-old Maresca had been strongly linked with the City job once reports emerged of Guardiola's potential exit.But Maresca's arrival in Manchester was held up by Chelsea's demand for a reported £17mn ($22mn) compensation package for the Italian, who was still contracted to the Blues until 2029 when he departed in January.Chelsea took the unusual step of issuing a statement, on the announcement of Maresca's appointment, to explain he had informed them earlier in the season "there might be an opportunity for him to succeed Pep Guardiola at the end of the season"."In December 2025, our head coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position," the club added."Obviously, we felt let down." Premier League glory Maresca will be tasked with restoring City to the summit of English football after two years without the Premier League title.He has experience of life at City after spending the 2022-23 season as one of Guardiola's assistants, helping them win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble.The former Juventus and West Brom midfielder also coached City's elite development squad to the 'Premier League 2' title in 2020-21.Maresca added: "This will be my third spell here. I know this club, I know the demands and I know the expectations."The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special, and I want to thank them for showing faith in my ability."I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City." Detail orientated  Maresca is back in management after leaving Chelsea under a cloud on New Year's Day.His spell at Chelsea started promisingly as the Blues finished fourth in the Premier League and won the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup in his first season.The intensely driven and detail oriented Maresca had a good relationship with Chelsea players and Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella, who has since joined Real Madrid, both expressed frustration at his departure.Maresca, who joined Chelsea after leading Leicester to promotion from the Championship in 2023-24, is a disciple of Guardiola, using the Spaniard's possession-based philosophy as the template for his own style of play.Replicating Guardiola's success will be a daunting task for Maresca, who will find a squad that had been significantly overhauled over the last 18 months as the club moved on from several of the pillars of their dynastic title-winning era.After months of speculation over his future, Guardiola quit in May, bringing the curtain down on an iconic decade in charge of City.He won the FA Cup and League Cup in his final season, but second-placed City finished seven points behind Premier League champions Arsenal.It was the second successive year that City had failed to win the Premier League after Guardiola led them to the title in six of his first eight seasons in England.The 55-year-old Spaniard, who lifted 17 major trophies with City, said he no longer had the energy to lead the club after 10 years in Manchester.City hope Maresca can emulate Arsenal's success with Mikel Arteta, another of Guardiola's former assistants.Maresca will look to make a big splash in the transfer market to herald his arrival.City have reportedly agreed a club record deal with Nottingham Forest for England midfielder Elliot Anderson, whilst they are also reported to be chasing Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi. 

Liverpool sacked manager Arne Slot on Saturday, saying the club were seeking a “change of direction”, after a disastrous defence of their Premier League title. The Reds finished fifth in the table, 25 points behind champions Arsenal, despite spending a Premier League record of nearly £450mn ($605mn) on new players in one transfer window last year. Outgoing Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is reportedly set to take over at Anfield after leading the Cherries into Europe for the first time in the club’s history. Just over a year ago Slot was heralded as a hero after taking on the daunting role of succeeding Jurgen Klopp and leading Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in his debut season in charge. Yet fans turned on the Dutchman this season after a series of lacklustre performances. There was also sign of dressing room disharmony, most notably from Mohamed Salah on his way out of the club. In an explosive social media post earlier this month, which was liked by multiple members of the Liverpool squad, Salah called for a return to “heavy metal football”, referring to Klopp’s high energy style of play, in a perceived dig at Slot’s more cautious approach. Liverpool’s return of 60 points was their lowest since the 2015/16 season. Despite their troubles, it had been reported that Slot would be handed a stay of execution after securing Champions League qualification. However, the club’s owners, the American-based Fenway Sports Group, have succumbed to fan pressure to axe the former Feyenoord boss. “We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward. Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but,” the club said in a statement. “The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach. “Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.” Liverpool added that “the process to appoint a successor is under way”. Many fans were keen for the return of Xabi Alonso to Anfield, but the club’s former midfielder will instead take charge of Chelsea next season. Iraola’s stock is high after an 18-game unbeaten league run to finish the campaign in sixth, just three points behind Liverpool despite vastly inferior resources. The Spaniard also worked together with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously held a similar role at Bournemouth. Slot ultimately paid for failing to get a return on Liverpool’s huge investment last summer. British transfer record signing Alexander Isak was beset by fitness problems, while Florian Wirtz struggled with the transition to the Premier League after a £100 million move from Bayer Leverkusen.Slot, though, also had to deal with emotional turmoil caused by the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in July.
