Jorge Martin pipped MotoGP title rival Marc Marquez to pole for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, while Pedro Acosta completed an all-Spanish front row at the Red Bull Ring.Martin secured his third pole of the season, beating Marquez by just 0.015 seconds in a closely fought qualifying session. Acosta qualified third after setting the pace in Friday's practice."I was pushing like hell," Aprilia rider Martin told TNT Sports. "I felt quite OK during the weekend, we did small steps from yesterday to today. We are prepared for the race now."Reigning world champion Marc Marquez has reignited his title challenge by winning five of the last seven races, but admitted rival Jorge Martin had the measure of him in qualifying on Saturday."He was faster. The front row was the main target today," said Ducati star Marquez. Acosta, racing at KTM's home circuit, will be hoping to finally earn the first MotoGP victory of his career. He will leave the Austrian team to join Marquez at Ducati next season.Italian Marco Bezzecchi will start fourth, ahead of Japan's Ai Ogura, while Alex Marquez qualified sixth despite crashing late in the session. Championship rivals Martin and Marquez are level on 274 points at the top of the standings, although Marquez holds the advantage with more race wins.Bezzecchi sits third overall, 33 points adrift of the leading pair.

Germany coach Jurgen Klopp handed 16 players their first call-ups on Thursday as he unveiled a 44-man squad for his first camp since taking over as coach in the summer. Teams are restricted to naming 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers for each match but the former Liverpool manager took the unusual step of naming a larger squad.Klopp has split the group into two separate squads for Germany's four upcoming Nations League fixtures. The first group will be available for the games fixtures against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24 and at home to Greece three days later in Augsburg.The second group will be available for Germany's matches against Serbia in Munich on October 1 and Greece in Thessaloniki on October 4. "It's very unusual that you've got four games in two weeks with the national team," Klopp said at a press conference in Frankfurt."I want to get to know as many players as possible in that time... It's not an A-team and a B-team, but the two squads have been created in a way that each fits well together."Klopp was named as the replacement for Julian Nagelsmann in July after the four-time World Cup winners were eliminated at the last-32 stage of the 2026 World Cup, their third successive early exit from the tournament. "It really felt like you had the feeling after the World Cup that German football is on its knees and we have no talents, no footballers," Klopp said."In the past four weeks as we've been looking closely and plenty of talents have caught our eye."It's a squad for two or three years from now, not just for the next four international games." - Ter Stegen goalkeeper, Kimmich captain - Leroy Sane, Deniz Undav, Leon Goretzka and goalkeeper Oliver Baumann have been left out, while veterans Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rudiger have since retired from international football.Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be Germany's number one option in goal. Klopp said the 2015 Champions League winner was the preferred option "for the moment". Ter Stegen left Barcelona for Ajax on a season-long loan in the summer after a torrid run of injuries which restricted him to just 12 competitive matches in the past two years.Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich, the most experienced member of the squad with 114 caps, has retained the captain's armband.The 31-year-old is set to move from right-back to central midfield, where he plays at club level. Undav, one of the few bright spots for Germany at the World Cup, has been omitted. German media reported the former Brighton forward will be given time off to recover from an Achilles tendon injury. Among the 16 potential debutants are Eintracht Frankfurt's Younes Ebnoutalib, who was in the second division a season ago, along with Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch, Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt and Celtic midfielder Mika Baur. "There's a couple of lads here who will surprise you, that's clear, but we saw something in the lads, plenty of potential, and we want to be part of their development," Klopp said.

Real Madrid substitute Carlos Espi snatched his team a last-gasp 3-2 win at Elche on Tuesday to pull them level with Barcelona at the top of La Liga. The striker, who already saved his team at Espanyol in their opening game with a late strike, tucked home at the back post in the 91st minute after Madrid threw away a two-goal lead.Espi, who Madrid signed this summer from Levante, has not started a game for the club but both of his goals have been vital for Jose Mourinho's side.Madrid have five wins from six matches, level on points with champions Barca, who host Racing Santander on Wednesday."(Espi) comes on with great motivation, (but) he has in front of him a player who is not a normal player," said Mourinho of Kylian Mbappe, who also scored for Madrid."Playing with the two of them is not easy... with the changes I made late on I risked everything, because a draw was not enough." Mourinho was unhappy with his team not extending their 2-0 lead and allowing Elche, now bottom of La Liga, to fight back. "There are games which seem to be over... which we're not killing off, and after not killing them off they go from easy to being out of control," added the veteran coach.Mourinho rested Jude Bellingham for the first time this season, bringing Arda Guler into the team in his place. Players from both teams wore t-shirts in support of residents from the city of Ceuta after the recent migration crisis in the Spanish territory in north Africa, although Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Ibrahima Konate rolled them halfway up, appearing to slightly obscure the message "we are all Ceutans". Vinicius has been struggling for his best form this season and missed some presentable opportunities at the Martinez Valero stadium. The forward prodded wide after Guler set him up in the second minute, and he also sent another effort badly off-target from the edge of the box.Tete Morente threatened at the other end but Madrid were on top and took the lead midway through the first half. Guler curled a free-kick around the wall and against the post, with the ball hitting Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro before it crossed the line, for an own goal.Madrid's second came eight minutes later, created by record signing Yan Diomande, who registered his first assist for the club. Starting for the second time, the Ivorian winger crossed for Mbappe to slip past Dituro for his eighth goal of the season across all competitions.Mbappe collided with the goalkeeper and appeared to be hurt but soon recovered and was able to play on. The striker combined again with Diomande early in the second half but could only head the winger's blasted cross high over the bar.Vinicius drilled wide before he was replaced, ending a frustrating evening for the Brazil international. - Elche battle back - Elche pulled one back through Abiel Osorio's header from Lucas Cepeda's cross, with the forward leaping high to nod past Thibaut Courtois.It struck fear into Los Blancos and Elche capitalised, equalising in the 83rd minute through Nino. The Spanish striker produced a fine low finish to pull his team level with the 15-time European champions.Mourinho threw on strikers Espi and Endrick to try and find a late winner, and he got what he was looking for.Espi made a run to the back post where Mbappe found him to knock in the late winner. Earlier Valencia earned a 1-0 win at Alaves, while Rayo Vallecano defeated Espanyol 2-1.It was Valencia's first win of the season, after they sacked coach Carlos Corberan on Sunday, secured with a Luis Rioja strike with 12 minutes to go. 

Leeds demolished Newcastle 4-1 to climb up to third in the Premier League table on Monday and inflict a punishing first defeat for Magpies boss Matthias Jaissle.A Lewis Miley own goal opened the floodgates before Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor completed the rout at Elland Road.Newcastle had made a positive start under Jaissle despite the upheaval of losing manager Eddie Howe and key players Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in the off-season.Despite being owned by the financial might of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, Newcastle targeted rising stars to fill the void of those that left and were outmuscled by a more experienced Leeds."It was clear from the start and I said that many times that we will have up and downs, challenges along the way," said Jaissle. "We faced that challenge and it's tough, it's really tough."A bad night for the visitors began inside the first 20 minutes when Nico Gonzalez had to be replaced as a concussion substitute. That left 18-year-old Sean Steur and Lewis Miley, 20, together at the heart of the Newcastle midfield and the later unfortunately had the final touch after Ao Tanaka's strike took two deflections before looping into the net.The visitors failed to regain their composure as just two minutes later Leeds doubled their advantage. Calvert-Lewin rose highest to meet James Justin's cross but his header flicked off Bogle as it found the bottom corner and the right-back was given the goal.Leeds' number nine did not have to wait long to make sure he did score for the fifth consecutive league game at Elland Road. Calvert-Lewin bulldozed his way past Sven Botman before sliding the ball under Lukas Hornicek in the Newcastle goal. Anton Stach should have added a fourth early in the second period when he pounced on a slack Hornicek pass out from the pack but dinked the ball just wide.Okafor did make it 4-0 before the hour mark when he volleyed in from the edge of the box after Newcastle failed to clear a long throw. "Perfect start right now with eight points, terrific performance," said Leeds boss Daniel Farke. "Energy, quality and good structure in and without possession."Bazoumana Toure netted a consolation in stoppage time to reduce Newcastle's arrears, but the damage was long since done. Victory takes Farke's men behind only defending champions Arsenal and Manchester City.Newcastle remain on five points but slip down to 12th due to their negative goal difference. 

The Qatar Scientific Club has launched the second edition of its Young Inventors programme, offering young people a platform to turn promising ideas into practical projects and solutions that benefit society.The initiative, part of a national programme unveiled by the Ministry of Sports and Youth during Web Summit Qatar, targets participants aged 15-30 with an interest in science, technology and innovation.It combines specialist training, mentoring, experimentation and practical application to help them develop ideas and build invention skills.Programme director Hessa al-Najjar told reporters that the initiative, implemented by the Qatar Scientific Club with the ministry’s support, provides “a genuine platform for discovering promising young talent, honing their skills, and transforming ideas and ambitions into innovations and solutions that serve society and meet future needs”.**media[491513]**She said that the second edition builds on the success of the inaugural cohort, which attracted 34 men and women.Participants took part in workshops on creative thinking, idea development and project planning, explored feasibility-study models and received consultations from specialists in fields related to their proposals.“Innovation does not always begin with vast resources; rather, it starts with an idea, passion, and the belief that the idea can be turned into reality,” al-Najjar said. “Our role is to support these ideas and create a suitable environment for young people, enabling them to develop their capabilities and pursue innovation with confidence.”She added that the programme supports Qatar National Vision 2030 by investing in human capital, strengthening national capabilities and encouraging creativity in scientific and technological fields.Its wider aim is to foster a culture of innovation and help build a generation able to contribute solutions to Qatar’s development.Al-Najjar thanked the ministry for its continued support and the Qatar Scientific Club for empowering young people and nurturing their talents.She expressed hope that the second cohort would begin “a journey filled with achievements and innovations that make Qatar proud”.Participants said that joining the programme is a valuable opportunity to experience innovation first-hand, refine their ideas and learn from specialists.They said its hands-on environment would help them recognise their abilities, develop viable projects and explore new possibilities in science, technology and innovation.Organisers said the new edition would broaden the programme’s reach by giving more young innovators access to technical resources, expert guidance and a supportive space in which to test and improve their concepts.Through this approach, the club aims to help participants gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to move from an initial idea towards a project with development potential. 

Elena Rybakina is on top of the tennis world, celebrating her first US Open title and her rise to number one barely more than three weeks after she feared injury would force her out of the final Grand Slam of the year. Kazakhstan's Rybakina beat two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Saturday to claim her third Grand Slam title. She'd already assured herself of toppling Sabalenka from the number one spot just by reaching the semi-finals. "I can't find words right now, honestly," Rybakina said. "I don't expect nothing like this coming to this tournament. I've been dealing with a little bit with an injury, but somehow everything aligned together on my side." The "little bit of an injury" saw Rybakina hobble out of her Cincinnati quarter-final on August 20 -- 10 days before the start of the US Open -- unable to put weight on her left heel."It wasn't the best time, for sure, because I was so upset," Rybakina said. "I didn't know actually how it's going to be day by day. "We arrive to New York. We did MRI. It didn't look that great. We had to talk with a lot of doctors to get opinion what we should do." With a doctor in Australia providing valuable long-distance advice, Rybakina and her team came up with a plan to manage her training, rest and treatment and give her a chance at her second major title of the year, after her victory over Sabalenka at the Australian Open. Her run to the final included an impressive fourth-round victory over two-time champion Naomi Osaka before come-from-behind wins over resurgent Olympic gold medallist Zheng Qinwen and former champion Coco Gauff. It all led to her 18th showdown with Sabalenka in a rivalry that has emerged as the most dynamic on the WTA tour.Having narrowed Sabalenka's lead in their head to 10-8, Rybakina is looking forward to more chances to take on her fiery rival, whose on-court personality is the perfect foil to her own cool approach. "I don't know what the future will bring, but it's always very difficult matches against Aryna," she said. "I feel like we push each other to be better after such tough battles."The two seem destined to tussle for the top spot for some time. But other players -- Gauff and Jessica Pegula -- also had a chance to seize the number one ranking in New York, so Rybakina knows that Sabalenka is not the only rival she must be wary of.She embraces the challenge. "I feel like not only with her, with also other players, top players, you always want to try something new, to change in your game, to be better," she said."I don't know what future is going to bring, but I hope success and some more wins." 

Pakistan cricket hit a fresh low during the dismal 3-0 Test whitewash in England, even if a dazzling cameo by debutant Razaullah at least ensured a tour marred by mid-series sackings ended with a flicker of hope. Described as the worst team to tour England in the last 50 years, Pakistan's cycle of chopping and changing continued when head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling chief Umar Gul were sacked from their posts. Seven players were expelled from the squad as the often vulnerable batting fell to a new low, failing to cross 200 in five of the six innings. White-ball coach Mike Hesson was brought in to take charge of the side for the third and final Test, a move which failed to reverse Pakistan's fortunes. The turmoil intensified when expelled players Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq were investigated by the national cybercrime agency on charges of leaking team information.Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram said he had predicted this free fall. "It's a disappointing state but I could see this coming for the last five years and you can't blame one particular person and one factor because there are many," Akram told AFP.His fellow former star Shahid Afridi described the situation as "bleak". "These are gloomy times in Pakistan cricket," Afridi told AFP. "You don't disrespect players like this and your system is not strong." - Nothing new - Changes and upheaval after defeats are hardly new for Pakistan. The cricket team has had three captains and six head coaches for Tests over the last three years.The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also had five different chairmen in as many years, resulting in a lack of consistent planning that has hurt the game's development.Punishing players has often gone hand in hand with those changes. The PCB banned then-captain Mohammad Yousuf and senior batter Younis Khan for an indefinite period and disciplined five other players, including Afridi, after a disastrous 3-0 whitewash in Australia in 2010. The third-test defeat to England at Edgbaston was Pakistan's 16th in their last 21 Tests, leaving them ninth and last on the World Test Championship (WTC) table, the same position in which they finished the previous cycle. Results in white-ball cricket have not been encouraging either. Pakistan crashed out in the first round of the ODI Champions Trophy last year, even though the event had marked the revival of their hosting rights after a 29-year exile caused by security concerns.Their Twenty20 fortunes have also gone into free fall. Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup, while another campaign two years earlier ended in an embarrassing group-stage exit that included a shock defeat against an unfancied USA side. - No quick fix - Former leg-spinner and 1992 World Cup winner Mushtaq Ahmed blamed the decline on a lack of planning."We had a great number of match-winners and a strong legacy, and that is why we produced results in the past," Ahmed told AFP. "Now the decline is steep and will take time to fix."With a flawed and inconsistent domestic system failing to prepare players for the demands of international cricket, an immediate solution appears unlikely. "We need to realise that we lack talent in red-ball cricket. White-ball teams are okay," said Akram. "It's easy to blame the PCB chairman but when we were sleeping and not addressing the overall flaws then such a fall happens." Meanwhile, fans are fast losing interest."All my four sons and I used to play in a local academy but in the last two years we all have lost interest as our team is not doing well," said Mohammad Afzal, a banker."Cricket is fast losing ground in Pakistan and we need strong measures to revive the glory." 

Frances Tiafoe left Arthur Ashe Stadium court to a standing ovation on Friday, but he won't be coming back on Sunday.The 28-year-old Washington native fell in four sets to compatriot Ben Shelton in a blockbuster US Open semi-final, coming up empty in his third trip to the last four in the last five years. "You never want to be too confident you can get back to it, but I feel pretty confident I can get back to it, for sure," "Big Foe" said."I'm just happy with how I've been doing and how I've been showing up every week. "I had a little blip, just having a little wrist thing. Outside of that, I've been showing up every week, which is something I really wanted to do and something I was happy about doing."Despite the disappointment, Tiafoe leaves Flushing Meadows in a much better state of mind than he was in after a third-round loss last year."I was doing my interview here last year, and it was really, really bad how I felt where I was at," he said. "It's hard, man. I'm upset, but I'm at the same time so proud of myself of where I've been." Tiafoe won the ATP grass court title in Halle this year and reached the final of the Cincinnati Masters in the run-up to the Open.But he said he just didn't have the firepower he needed against Shelton. "Even though I've won a lot of matches, still something that's lacking for me is my serve percentage-wise. I was working way too hard on my serve, and he was serving 82%. "It' kind of hard. Especially lefties, moving around, spins, kicks, sliders, big ones. Obviously he can get it up there when he's really juicing out."For me, I'm grinding, grinding, grinding in service games, and he was trying to break. I think that was the biggest thing."It's something to work on as he plots a way to give himself more chances on the game's biggest stages. "Ultimately I want to do the thing, man. I want to be a Grand Slam champion one day ... just get back to the drawing board and keep working."

Ben Shelton believes his newly acquired problem-solving skills can carry him to a maiden Grand Slam title when he faces Alexander Zverev in the final of the US Open on Sunday. The big-serving 23-year-old powered into the first major championship final of his career on Friday after muscling his way past close friend Frances Tiafoe in anall-American semi-final. The eighth-seeded Shelton was in irresistible form as he stormed to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory in front of a raucous home crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.It was another impressive milestone on Shelton's journey through this year's tournament, which included an epic five-set victory in the quarter-finals over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Shelton, who blasted 20 aces in Friday's semi-final win, said his success at Flushing Meadows this year has been based on his ability to align brain with brawn."I think that problem-solving has been the name of the game here," said Shelton, who had never beaten Alcaraz in three previous meetings before his last-eight triumph over the Spanish star. "It's been a lot of uphill battle, so I think that I'm fully ready for the challenge to problem-solve," Shelton said."I feel that I'm a different player. I feel like I have so many more tools. I feel like I know my identity, am comfortable in my own skin, and I know what it takes for me to be playing top-level tennis. "I'm looking forward to the challenge, being able to problem-solve on Sunday. I know what I'm up against, and I'm also the most confident I've ever been in my game."For me, this whole tournament now at this point has been uncharted territory. I'm in positions I've never been in before. I've beaten guys that I have never beaten before. I'm just excited to put it all out on the line." Shelton is now one win away from becoming the first American man to win a Grand Slam title in 23 years. The last player to lift a major was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. He is adamant he will not be burdened by the weight of history in Sunday's final. "I think that I handle these big situations in my career pretty well," Shelton said. "I feel that confidence and belief take over."The nerves are always there. It's something that you got to kind of lean into. The nerves are as much there in the first round for me as in the semi-finals, and I'm sure that the finals will be the same."It's something you've got to be able to overcome, but for me I'm having fun, you know? This is an enjoyable moment for me and knowing that I can leave it all out there on the court and push myself to the absolute limit is an exciting, exciting thought."rcw/pbt
