Qatar attends dialogue on global law, humanitarian diplomacy

Qatar participated Monday in a high-level ministerial dialogue on humanitarian diplomacy and upholding international law, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Her Excellency the Minister of State for International Co-operation Dr Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser al-Misnad represented Qatar at the dialogue. In her remarks, she affirmed Qatar’s unwavering commitment to respecting international humanitarian law and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected, particularly in areas affected by conflict and natural disasters. HE Dr al-Misnad noted that challenges to humanitarian access require effective multilateral engagement and urgent, co-ordinated efforts by international and regional humanitarian actors. She highlighted Qatar’s continued efforts to strengthen the role of humanitarian diplomacy in promoting a broader and more inclusive humanitarian response, guided by a foreign policy rooted in dialogue and grounded in the principles of international law and the UN Charter. The minister pointed out that, through its mediation and good offices and in close partnership with the United Nations and humanitarian organisations, Qatar has worked to open humanitarian corridors, facilitate the release of detainees, and reunite separated families, including children, across various conflict settings.

HH the Amir calls for return to negotiations

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has urged the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a return to negotiations to resolve the Gulf crisis, warning that the absence of a regional collective security system has allowed countries to be dragged into a war that threatens livelihoods worldwide.Addressing the opening session of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York yesterday, HH the Amir said a peaceful diplomatic solution remained possible and realistic, and the opportunity to achieve it must not be missed.He called for a lasting settlement ensuring security and stability for the entire region, including Iran, opening avenues for co-operation and guaranteeing non-interference in states’ internal affairs.The region was experiencing one of its most dangerous phases, he said, describing the crisis as the cumulative consequence of years of postponement, temporary solutions and unrealistic policies.Qatar, His Highness said, had consistently maintained that disputes must be resolved through dialogue and negotiations grounded in international law, respect for sovereignty and the rights of peoples. Unresolved conflicts became more costly with time, rather than resolving themselves.Renewing his call for a regional collective security system, HH the Amir said its absence had enabled wars driven by considerations unrelated to regional interests and attacks on neighbouring countries despite their strenuous efforts to prevent escalation.“It has become possible for one party to drag its neighbours into a war that is not theirs, targeting their vital assets and installations,” His Highness said.HH the Amir pointed out how the international waterway carrying nearly a quarter of global energy trade had been closed, turning the global economy’s lifelines into instruments of pressure and bargaining.“This is a crisis that drives up the prices of food and medicine and affects the livelihoods of peoples who have nothing to do with any of this.”While pursuing diplomacy, Qatar had strengthened its defences to protect its sovereignty, territory, people and normal way of life. It had devised resilient economic plans and maintained development projects despite the war’s severe impact and heavy costs, His Highness said.HH the Amir said Qatar combined steadfastness with flexibility, placing the interests of its nation, citizens and residents above all else. Its values reflected a conviction that national dignity could not be compromised and that wisdom and firmness were inseparable.“This approach was firmly established in our country by the leaders of Qatar, from the Founder, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani, through to His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, may Allah have mercy on his soul, our Amir from 1995 to 2013, who passed away this year, mourned with profound affection and gratitude by his people and by all peace-loving forces across our region and around the world.”“On this occasion, I would like to thank the United Nations General Assembly for convening a special session in honour of his memory and in recognition of his legacy.”Resilience, His Highness said, resulted from planning, preparedness and investment in people and national capabilities. Qatar had assessed risks, secured supply chains, strengthened institutions, developed strategic reserves and built trusted international partnerships.It continued investing in development, education, health, security and economic diversification under Qatar National Vision 2030, recognising their connection with peace, human rights and the rule of law.Turning to Palestine, HH the Amir said there could be no just international order while it remained a blind spot. He described what had happened in Gaza as “genocide in every sense of the word” and a stain on humanity’s conscience.Future generations would be astonished by the gulf between the catastrophe’s scale and the international response, he said, warning that Israeli leaders were openly advocating displacement under the label of “migration”.He criticised attempts to deflect global revulsion through accusations of antisemitism and conspiracy theories, despite images of atrocities circulating worldwide and Israeli soldiers recording and boasting of their actions.Qatar had worked from the outset to stop bloodshed, ease civilian suffering and secure the release of prisoners and detainees until a ceasefire was achieved. Its efforts now focused on consolidating that ceasefire and advancing lasting peace.HH the Amir added, “If Palestinian factions moved towards accepting arrangements for collecting weapons under the agreement, Israel must honour all its obligations: permanently ending operations, withdrawing from Gaza, lifting the blockade and allowing unconditional humanitarian assistance.”His Highness warned that advocates of displacement could obstruct improvements to daily life because these strengthened Palestinians’ ability to remain on their land.The international community bore direct responsibility for ensuring implementation, rather than leaving it dependent on a party accustomed to reneging on commitments when able to act with impunity.His Highness condemned persecution, apartheid and settler terrorism in the occupied West Bank, violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites, particularly al-Aqsa Mosque, and the denial of Palestinian rights, including an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.Israeli aggression had also expanded across the region, His Highness said, citing attacks on Syria and the occupation of additional territory alongside the Golan Heights, occupied since 1967.HH the Amir accused Israel of claiming authority over neighbouring countries’ political choices, disregarding understandings with Lebanon, maintaining its occupation of Lebanese territory and destroying entire southern villages.“Restraining Israel’s unlawful conduct was a test of international commitment to the rule of law. That law lost its meaning if it constrained the vulnerable while exempting the powerful.”Across the Arab region, His Highness identified development and strong state institutions as essential to stability. Armed forces outside state control must be eliminated, with the state retaining a monopoly on legitimate arms.His Highness reaffirmed support for Syria’s recovery, reconstruction, institutions, sovereignty and territorial integrity, with stability and dignity founded on equal citizenship.Qatar supported inclusive dialogue for sustainable peace in Sudan, reconciliation and unified institutions in Libya, and Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.In Lebanon, it backed state authority throughout the country, condemned Israeli attacks and urged adherence to the ceasefire and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.In Yemen, Qatar supported UN efforts towards a comprehensive political settlement based on the UN-facilitated national dialogue’s outcomes, preserving unity and sovereignty.HH the Amir said Qatar’s foreign policy combined safeguarding vital interests, mediation, humanitarian action and principled positions consistent with international law and legitimacy.Its work extended beyond facilitating negotiations to relieving suffering caused by war and natural disasters and supporting human development across the region and beyond.His Highness assured Qatar would remain open to dialogue, cultural interaction and exchanges of experience. Doha’s preparations to host the Fourth Global Disability Summit in 2028 reflected its commitment to empowering persons with disabilities and building inclusive societies.Hosting the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup likewise recognised sport’s ability to connect peoples. Expansion of the United Nations House in Doha would strengthen the organisation’s work for peace, development and human rights.HH the Amir congratulated General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman, thanked his predecessor Annalena Baerbock and commended Secretary-General António Guterres and UN staff for their work amid difficult circumstances.Reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to the UN Charter, he said peaceful coexistence and dialogue offered the only path leaving neither victor nor vanquished.The session was attended by His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and members of the official delegation accompanying HH the Amir.  'We remain deeply convinced that crisis in the Gulf can be resolved through diplomatic means' - Gulf Times

Carrick demands Man Utd response after 'pathetic' jibes

Michael Carrick struck a defiant tone after Manchester United equalled their worst start to a Premier League season, but Sunday's woeful 1-1 draw at Fulham left the beleaguered boss under mounting pressure.Trailing to Lisandro Martinez's farcical own goal, United were just moments away from a third successive defeat on another dispiriting afternoon for Carrick.Matheus Cunha's deflected 89th minute equaliser spared United from fresh humiliation.But escaping with a barely-deserved point against a winless side sitting second-from-bottom of the Premier League was hardly cause for celebration.With only one win so far this season, United have matched their lowest points total after five matches in the Premier League era. SITTING IN 12TH PLACE WITH FIVE POINTSSitting in 12th place with five points, Carrick's men equalled the mark set by Louis van Gaal's United in 2014-15, when they went on to finish fourth.The statistics are damning enough in their own right but the eye-test during their moribund performance at Craven Cottage provided an even more insightful look at what ails United.Lacking a cutting edge in attack, bereft of defensive organisation and, in the words of Cunha, short of energy and drive until they fell behind, this was the kind of flawed display that has scarred so many United seasons since their last title in 2013.Carrick was expected to build on last season's climb to a third-place finish during his spell as interim boss.But having hauled United from the wreckage of Ruben Amorim's self-destructive reign, Carrick is in danger of losing his way in his first season as permanent boss.A wretched 2-0 defeat at promoted Hull on the opening weekend set alarm bells ringing among the United faithful.Beaten in the Manchester derby by an Erling Haaland goal that should have been disallowed last weekend, United then blew a two-goal lead at home for the first time in 50 years in a League Cup meltdown against Brighton.Already 10 points behind leaders City, Carrick's team were so underwhelming against Fulham that even one of the manager's former team-mates took a swipe at United. 'FINE MARGINS'Commenting on the match for Sky Sports, ex-United defender Gary Neville was scathing in his assessment of their performance at the start of the second half."I've watched Man United since the age of five and that's the worst 15 minutes I've ever seen. Absolutely pathetic," Neville said.The 51-year-old added: "I've never seen such a lack of effort. What must Carrick be thinking?"Carrick does not have the confrontational personality of some of his United predecessors, but he tried his best to quiet the noise as he searched for reasons for optimism."It's not been ideal. It was always going to come at some point and it's come at the start of the season," he said."On the other side of it, at Everton, a 25-yard shot, top corner for their equaliser. The City goal that's not a goal. Today, own-goal, that's one of them things."It's pretty fine margins that have flipped it. I know we can do better, we need to do better at certain things."But I'm not despondent because I think we've shown some good signs as well." CARRICK HAS THREE WEEKS TO SET THINGS RIGHTCarrick has three weeks to stew on United's miserable start during an extended international break.Questions about United's transfer policy and fitness regime are growing louder.The 45-year-old must come up with answers before they return to action with a crucial clash against bottom-of-the-table Tottenham on October 10.Losing to Roberto De Zerbi's side would be a huge blow to Carrick's hopes of turning the tide, especially with tricky trips to Atletico Madrid and Leeds looming after Tottenham visit Old Trafford.But Carrick is putting his faith in United's players absorbing the lessons from their painful start."You learn about each other, they learn about me, I learn about the individual and as a team, how we respond, what our reaction is," he said."That's part of growing as a group. You have to go through certain things to get to the end of it."

Man City outgun Sunderland despite Brobbey hat-trick, Man United rescue Fulham draw

Manchester City went top of the Premier League despite Brian Brobbey's hat-trick in a 5-3 thriller win over Sunderland on Sunday as Matheus Cunha rescued Manchester United from another damaging defeat at Fulham.City took advantage of Arsenal's shock 3-0 defeat at Brighton on Saturday but made life hard for themselves despite taking the lead three times at the Etihad Stadium.Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring with his first goal since equalling the Premier League transfer record with a £125mn ($167mn) move from Chelsea. The Argentine midfielder's free-kick caught out Robin Roefs at his near post.Sunderland won their first European match for 53 years against AZ Alkmaar in midweek but showed little sign of tiredness as City could not shake off the Black Cats. Brobbey slotted home Enzo Le Fee's pass for the first of his treble.Quick feet and a slick finish from Rayan Cherki restored City's advantage, but Brobbey again replied within four minutes at the end of a fine Sunderland move. Antoine Semenyo smashed City back in front before half-time and thought he had settled the game with another accurate left-footed finish just before the hour mark.Brobbey completed his hat-trick after Nilson Angulo beat Gianluigi Donnarumma to a ball over the top. A couple of nervy moments from the Italian goalkeeper nearly led to a Sunderland equaliser as Ruben Dias was forced to clear off his own line.However, Erling Haaland finally got involved in the goalfest to seal the three points and ensured he has scored against every side he has faced in the Premier League. Victory extends Enzo Maresca's perfect start to the daunting task of succeeding Pep Guardiola at City boss. "To be honest, I prefer to win 1-0 than 5-3 but I expected a very difficult game," said Maresca. United head into a three-week international break just two points outside the relegation zone as they failed to ease the pressure on manager Michael Carrick in a 1-1 draw. But it could have been even worse for the Red Devils after a calamitous Lisandro Martinez own goal put Fulham on course for their first league win of the season.Senne Lammens parried Calvin Bassey's strike back into the danger area and then could not clear when Martinez inadvertently turned the ball towards his own goal. Cunha's 89th minute equaliser also took a wicked deflection off David Affengruber to save United's blushes.The Red Devils have taken just five points from their opening five games and were dumped out of the League Cup by Brighton in midweek after surrendering a 2-0 lead at home for the first time in 50 years. A point is enough to edge Fulham off the foot of the table as Tottenham drop to the bottom.Iraola's winning returnLiverpool won 1-0 on Andoni Iraola's return to Bournemouth thanks to Alexander Isak's winner. Iraola was given a warm reception after leading the Cherries into Europe for the first time in the club's history.That success led to the Basque being snapped up by Liverpool but he has endured an up and down start at Anfield and needed a victory to ease tensions before the international break. Liverpool's performance was again far from convincing but they got the only goal when Cody Gakpo's cross sat up for Isak to fire in his fourth of the season."To win here is very difficult, I know it very well," said Iraola. "Overall we've improved, definitely since the first games."Victory moves Liverpool up to sixth and within a point of third-placed Brighton. Leeds missed the chance to go third themselves after being held 0-0 at home by Crystal Palace.

Michael Carrick needs a win at Fulham to ease the mounting pressure on troubled Manchester United while Tottenham are desperate for their first Premier League goal of the season against fellow strugglers Aston Villa.At the top end of the table, Arsenal and Manchester City aim to maintain their perfect records going into the international break.Defiant Carrick confident of Man Utd revivalAs Carrick trudged towards the tunnel at Old Trafford after Manchester United's demoralising collapse against Brighton, the rumble of discontent grew louder with each footstep.United had just lost a home game after holding a two-goal lead for the first time in 50 years and fans at the Stretford End were venting their frustration, with jeers and abuse aimed at Carrick and his players.The United manager acknowledged Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Brighton in the League Cup third round was unacceptable as he took responsibility for their third defeat in six games this season.But Carrick's willingness to shoulder the blame will not save him from even greater scrutiny and criticism if United lose at Fulham on Sunday.United have won just once in four league games and have lost their past two matches in all competitions.They cannot afford another setback against a Fulham side languishing in the relegation zone and who are yet to win in the league this season."Of course we can turn it around. We've got some really good players and it feels bad at the moment because we haven't had a great week, or two or three weeks," Carrick said."It's all about what you do next and dealing with the moments, and the ups and downs."Marmoush wants Spurs to stick togetherWithout a win or even a goal in the league this season, Roberto De Zerbi's expensively rebuilt Tottenham are back in familiar territory.Spurs have finished one place above the relegation zone in each of the past two seasons -- narrowly avoiding the dreaded drop on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign.De Zerbi spent more than £300 million ($400 million) in the close season in a bid to ensure the north Londoners would be more competitive.Instead, they are once again marooned in 17th place, on just two points, ahead of Aston Villa's visit on Saturday.Beaten 3-1 at Liverpool in the League Cup third round in midweek, Tottenham have already shown the anxious, error-strewn form that condemned them to a relegation battle last season.Losing to Villa -- who have made an even worse start, with only one point from four games -- would leave Spurs with a sinking feeling again.Trying to remain positive, Tottenham forward Omar Marmoush said: "These moments build the mentality and the team together. We are all one big family and we push together."Arsenal, Man City set the standardArsenal have made a perfect start to their bid for the club's first back-to-back titles since the 1930s, with Manchester City emerging as their main rivals after their own flawless run.Arsenal sit top of the table with four successive wins and City are just behind them on goal difference.It is little surprise to see the Gunners in pole position given their dominant march to the title last season.But City's early success is more eye-opening in the first campaign of the post-Pep Guardiola era.Guardiola's successor Enzo Maresca bolstered his approval rating among City fans by masterminding a 1-0 win at Manchester United last weekend, decided by a goal that should have been ruled out for offside."For sure the fans are happy and that's the only thing I care about," Maresca said.Arsenal, who travel to Brighton on Saturday and City, who host Sunderland on Sunday, will expect to maintain their blistering form heading into the international break. Fixtures (all times GMT):Saturday (1400 unless stated) Tottenham v Aston Villa (1130), Brighton v Arsenal, Everton v Ipswich, Newcastle v Hull, Nottingham Forest v Coventry (1630)Sunday (1300 unless stated) Bournemouth v Liverpool, Leeds v Crystal Palace, Manchester City v Sunderland, Fulham v Manchester United (1530)

Qatar's envoy participates in dialogue on rights of women and children in conflicts

Her Excellency the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Dr Hind Abdulrahman al-Muftah participated Thursday in the interactive dialogue on the human rights of women and children in conflict and post-conflict situations, under item 3 of the agenda of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council.In Qatar's statement, she affirmed that protecting women and children during and after armed conflicts was of paramount importance and constituted a priority in Qatar's foreign policy, diplomacy and humanitarian programmes.HE Dr al-Muftah said that, within this framework, Qatar launched international initiatives, including Resolution 60/19, in partnership with Costa Rica, on promoting and protecting the human rights of women and children in conflict and post-conflict situations, as well as the Women in Conflict Zones initiative launched by Qatar in September 2022 to strengthen the protection of women and ensure their effective participation in peace processes.She also referred to Qatar's hosting of the Analysis and Outreach Hub of the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, in support of prevention and monitoring efforts.HE Dr al-Muftah renewed Qatar's call on all parties to conflicts to fulfill their obligations under international law and immediately end grave violations committed against women and children.She also stressed the importance of ensuring justice, holding the perpetrators of such violations accountable, and providing victims with effective remedies and reparations in accordance with international law.

US Solheim Cup captain Angela Stanford insists no 'regrets'

Captain Angela Stanford said it was too early to say whether she would have done anything differently in the wake of the United States' 15-13 loss to Team Europe in the 2026 Solheim Cup.The teams entered Sunday tied 8-8 after the first two days of competition. The Europeans raced out to an early lead in the Sunday singles matches and went on to win seven of the 12 to secure the Cup. The U.S. has not won the event on foreign soil since 2015 in Germany.Stanford was asked whether she would have approached Sunday any differently in hindsight."I haven't really processed everything so far. But right now I mean, no, that's not who I am," Stanford said. "I try not to have regrets. I believed in all 12, so, you know, I probably need to think about that some more."Among the question marks entering the event was the status of Angel Yin, who lost 35 pounds this summer while battling a stomach illness. She returned to the LPGA Tour for the FM Championship late last month but missed the cut.Yin insisted she was fit enough to compete, but finished the Solheim Cup at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands with an 0-1-1 record. That included a 4&3 loss on Sunday against Sweden's Linn Grant, when they were the third singles match out on the course. MISSED EIGHT CONSECUTIVE CUTSThe U.S. brought Lilia Vu to the Netherlands as an alternate, but the former world No. 1 had missed eight consecutive cuts."I think we did the best we could," Stanford said. "We were prepared if Angel couldn't play. We wanted to see what we had with Angel, and she went out and got a half a point with Yealimi (Noh). Yealimi was a stud this week. And I needed to get Andrea (Lee) with Yealimi. So I wouldn't have done anything different there."By the time Rose Zhang defeated France's Celine Boutier in the final match Sunday, the Americans' fate had already been sealed with England's Lottie Woad and Spain's Carlota Ciganda winning their matches."You hear people say over and over and over how difficult it is, and it really is," Stanford said while Zhang's match was still going. "I think that we did a lot of things right leading up to it, and I know we did," she added."They fought hard, and we seemed to always be on the same page. Look, the Europeans played great today, and that's the way it goes. So their backs were against the wall, they had nothing to lose, and that's exactly what they did. They came out and played well, so good for them."In addition to world No. 1 Nelly Korda, the only other player on Stanford's team ranked in the top 20 entering the Solheim Cup was No. 17 Lauren Coughlin. Still, the Americans had the edge on paper with an average world ranking of 39 compared to Europe's 54.Stanford, 48, said she took the captain's role in part to help women's golf grow "just a little bit more." While she enjoyed the experience, the seven- time LPGA Tour winner didn't sound as though she's ready to sign up for a repeat tour of Solheim Cup captain's duty."We have a pretty good pipeline," Stanford said. "There are a lot of captains in line on the American side, a lot of good ones coming."So, yeah, I think we have a lot lined up ready to go."

Haaland fires 10-man Man City to memorable win over Man Utd

Erling Haaland fired 10-man Manchester City to a memorable 1-0 victory over Manchester United despite Phil Foden's first-half red card to extend a perfect start to Enzo Maresca's reign.Foden kicked out at United captain Bruno Fernandes on 23 minutes to give the visitors a mountain to climb. But a new-look City were up to the challenge as the near £250mn ($340mn) midfield pairing of Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez proved their worth.Haaland's winner was laced with controversy as Fernandez was deemed not to be interfering with play when he attempted to head in before the ball reached the Norwegian."It's worrying, if that's really how it is, if that's how the game is seen by those who are officiating it," said United boss Michael Carrick. "I just don't get it, I really don't get it, I can't understand them."Defeat compounds a miserable Premier League start for United as they are already eight points adrift of City and defending champions Arsenal. By contrast, victory was a huge statement for Maresca to quell fears of a major drop-off from City following Pep Guardiola's trophy-laden decade in charge."It's a kind of new experience to win with 10 men. It's amazing, I have to be honest," said Haaland.The visitors had made the better start in the opening quarter but looked to have been completely undone by Foden's ill discipline. City will argue that Fernandes should also have seen red as he fouled Foden and then seemed to kick him in the back.But there was little case for Foden's defence as he retaliated by throwing both legs up into Fernandes's midriff. "I think Foden's red card is a red card, but I also think that in the same action it's a red card for them," said Maresca.Marcus Rashford was inches away from his first United goal since December 2024 when his free-kick came crashing back off the post with the home side's best effort before the break. The woodwork came to City's rescue again just after half-time when Kobbie Mainoo curled onto the post from distance and the ball rebounded kindly into Gianluigi Donnarumma's grasp. But the City sucker punch arrived on the hour mark.Haaland adjusted his body brilliantly to sweep in Josko Gvardiol's deflected cross. A VAR review deemed Haaland was onside and that Fernandez was not interfering as he stooped to try and head in himself. City came close to landing the telling blow when Fernandez's effort was turned onto the post by Senne Lammens. Haaland also should have had a second when he got onto Fernandez's wicked low free-kick delivery.City, though, were not made to pay for failing to add a second as United lacked the composure and quality to make the man advantage count until the final minute of stoppage time. Fernandes's reverse ball perfectly picked out Bryan Mbeumo but he was denied by a fine save from Donnarumma. Maresca scampered down the touchline in delight at full-time.After a battle for the title went down to the final week of last season, Arsenal and City look a class apart from the competition once more. Both are locked on 12 points with Chelsea, Liverpool and United already cut adrift. Brighton run rampant against 10-man CoventryMeanwhile, Brighton thrashed 10-man Coventry 5-0 to move into fourth place and leave Frank Lampard's side rooted to the bottom of the table. Charalampos Kostoulas put Brighton ahead in the first half and Malick Yalcouye doubled their lead soon after the interval. Coventry striker Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for violent conduct in the second half.Pascal Gross netted from the penalty spot and Lewis Dunk curled home from long range. Yasin Ayari wrapped up Brighton's emphatic victory as Coventry's frustrated fans flooded to the exits well before the final whistle.Coventry are still looking for their first Premier League goal since 2001 after going scoreless while losing their first four top-flight matches this season. Lampard's men are the only Premier League team without a point this season. The Sky Blues were promoted from the Championship last season to end their 25-year exile from the Premier League.

Fernandes treble inspires Man United rout, Chelsea beat Brighton in thriller

Bruno Fernandes starred with a hat-trick in Manchester United's 5-2 rout of Ipswich, while Chelsea extended Xabi Alonso's perfect start with a thrilling 4-3 win against Brighton.Fernandes shone as he ensured United bounced back from their humiliating 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.Boss Michael Carrick was in danger of another embarrassing loss to a promoted club when Leif Davis put Ipswich ahead at Old Trafford with a 29th minute strike that cannoned in off the crossbar. But the Fernandes show started in the 40th minute after Marcelino Nunez's slip allowed Matheus Cunha to pick out the United captain for a sumptuous finish.United went in front in the 56th minute when Jacob Greaves was presured into an own goal. Greaves deflected Harry Maguire's shot into his own net, with Ipswich's appeals for handball against the United defender snubbed by VAR.Completing a miserable five minutes for Greaves, the Ipswich defender conceded a penalty with his foul on Cunha and United captain Fernandes stepped up to slot home from the spot.Fernandes sealed his treble in the 68th minute, sweeping in from close-range after Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo had shots blocked.It was Fernandes's second league hat-trick for United following his treble against Leeds five years ago.Fernandes was not finished and Bryan Mbeumo scored from his pass with a lob that clipped the bar and dropped over the line in the 82nd minute. Chuba Akpom's stoppage-time tap-in was little consolation for out-classed Ipswich, who were beaten for the first time since returning to the top-flight."It was a massive result for us. We lost three points last week. First game at home, the fans have been waiting for this," Fernandes said. "Scoring goals is the best feeling in football. Doing a hat-trick at home with our fans is something I'm proud of. I hope I can do much more and help my team-mates score too."Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer all scored when Alonso's reign as Chelsea boss kicked off with a 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday.And Pedro and Palmer were back on target, while Rogers teed up Chelsea's second goal, scored by Pedro Neto, as the Blues held off a rally from Brighton at Stamford Bridge.Emiliano Martinez made his Chelsea debut in goal just hours after sealing his move from Aston Villa. But there was no place for his Argentina team-mate Enzo Fernandez, who could still leave Chelsea for Manchester City before Tuesday's transfer deadline."We have to be aware until Tuesday evening what is going to develop. We're not sure. We are preparing for all scenarios," Alonso said of Fernandez. "I'm sure that, whatever happens, from Wednesday we will have a good enough squad to compete in the Premier League."Romeo Lavia profited from a mix-up between Bart Verbruggen and Mats Wieffer to prod in Chelsea's opening goal from a corner. Neto then turned in Rogers's cross before Pedro rounded off a brilliant Chelsea counter-attack that began inside their own box.Martinez was beaten moments later by a blistering volley from Malick Yalcouye. Pedro turned Pascal Gross's cross into his own net just after the hour mark.A moment of genius from Palmer eased Chelsea's nerves as he curled into the bottom corner from outside the area after a fine solo rune. Gross headed in a stoppage-time consolation for Brighton, but Chelsea join Manchester City and Hull as the only sides to take six points from their opening two games.Brentford were on course to also maintain their perfect start when Kevin Schade's audacious flick opened the scoring away to Leeds.But Dominic Calvert-Lewin turned in Lukas Nmecha's driven cross to salvage a point and Leeds's unbeaten start to the campaign.Sunderland got off the mark with a 1-0 victory over Fulham thanks to Wilson Isidor's winner 15 minutes from time.

UN maritime agency says 6,000 seafarers stranded in the Strait of Hormuz

The UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) said around 6,000 seafarers remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Israeli-Iranian conflict that broke out on February 28.IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said that six months after the conflict began, up to 400 ships carrying around 6,000 seafarers remained unable to depart the Gulf safely. The number had previously stood at around 20,000 seafarers aboard 2,000 ships, while some vessels and their crews have since been able to leave the region.He noted that the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international waterway through which around 20% of global oil supplies pass, remains largely closed to maritime traffic.Josephine Latu-Sanft, an IMO spokesperson, said thousands of seafarers in the region continue to live and work under conditions of heightened risk and uncertainty.She added that the impacts of the crisis were grave in both the short and long term, warning that disruptions to vital supply chains for fuel, fertilizers and other essential commodities would have repercussions for communities and economies around the world.The IMO stressed the need for renewed political will and cooperation to ensure the right of transit passage through the Strait of Hormuz. It said it had so far verified at least 70 attacks on international shipping since the conflict began, resulting in the deaths of 19 seafarers.
