Oil prices bounced higher on Thursday while Asian stocks fell, as new US strikes on Iran marked the latest test of a shaky ceasefire in the Middle East war.In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index closed down 1.3% to 25,006.16 points; Tokyo - Nikkei 225 ended down 0.5% to 64,693.12 points and Shanghai - Composite closed up 0.1% to 4,098.64 points yesterday.The price jumps erased much of Wednesday's declines on the hopes of an imminent deal to end the conflict that has all but halted shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz for months.An American official said the military had shot down four Iranian drones and struck a control centre in the southern city of Bandar Abbas.The official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, described the latest actions as "measured, purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire".Tehran's state media said Iranian forces had fired at four ships in the strait, while Kuwait said its air defences were responding to missile and drone attacks.The developments came despite an Iranian official saying renewed hostilities with the United States were unlikely, and a threat from US President Donald Trump to "finish the job" if a peace deal was not reached.The mixed signals underscored the fragile state of talks aimed at ending the Middle East war, which has profoundly shaken global energy markets.Brent North Sea crude, the main international benchmark, rose more than two percent during Thursday trade to nearly $97 a barrel, while the main US contract, WTI, increased at a similar pace to around $91 a barrel.Stock markets across Asia saw losses on Thursday, with main benchmarks in Hong Kong, Taipei and Sydney closing more than one percent lower.Tokyo and Seoul saw more moderate declines, while Shanghai was the sole major exchange to buck the trend, finishing the day up 0.1%.During morning trading in Europe, London fell nearly 1% while Paris was down 0.4%. Frankfurt was flat.The drops came after a strong day for global stocks on Wednesday, as investors, bullish on artificial intelligence, looked past the conflicting headlines on Iran.In Asia, South Korean chipmaker SK hynix hit a $1tn market capitalisation, placing it alongside regional tech heavyweights Samsung Electronics and TSMC, as well as US chipmaker Micron.The tech surge has coincided with a persistent spike in energy prices, which has threatened several major Asian economies that rely on oil shipments from the Middle East.Economists warn that central banks may have to raise interest rates if inflation worsens as a result of the war, increasing borrowing costs and potentially weighing on economic growth.On Wednesday, "every headline pulled the market in a different direction, leaving traders with the same conclusion they have been wrestling with for weeks", said Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management."The Strait may eventually reopen fully, but until there is something more concrete than draft frameworks and political theatre, every barrel remains hostage to headline volatility, even if sub-$100," he said. 

Airports across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East are taking concrete steps to protect their infrastructure from climate change, moving beyond emissions reduction to address risks like flooding, extreme heat, and water scarcity, according to the Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID).“It is encouraging to see airports across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East responding proactively through smarter infrastructure planning, comprehensive risk assessments, resilient design, and stronger collaboration with governments and industry stakeholders,” said Stefano Baronci, director general of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East.Baronci was referring to the 12 airports across the two regions that were recognised for outstanding work in climate adaptation during the 10th annual Green Airports Recognition (GAR2026) programme. The awards were presented recently during the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly, Conference and Exhibition (RACE2026) in Bangkok, Thailand.He noted that ACI had initiated a landmark Climate Adaptation study to give airports tools for assessing climate-related risks, adding that adaptation was “not only critical for maintaining operational resilience but also for safeguarding the connectivity, economies, and communities that rely on aviation every day.”This year’s theme was ‘Climate Change Adaptation’. Winning projects included raising critical electrical infrastructure above flood levels, fitting heat-resistant runway materials, redesigning drainage systems to handle heavier rainfall, and securing alternative water supplies during droughts.The 33 submissions received this year were the strongest indicator yet that airports in both regions are treating climate adaptation as an operational priority, not just an environmental one, the organisation stated.According to the ACI APAC & MID, the submissions strongly indicate that airports in Asia-Pacific & Middle East are now leading the way not only by cutting carbon emissions but also by preparing for climate impacts such as flooding, extreme weather, storm surges, and water scarcity.The recognition was awarded under Platinum, Gold, and Silver categories across four passenger traffic segments. In the over-40mn passengers per annum category, Hong Kong International Airport took Platinum, Taoyuan International Airport took Gold, and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Saudi Arabia took Silver.The following were recognised under the 15-40mn category: Auckland International Airport (Platinum), Melbourne Airport (Gold), and Kansai International Airport (Silver). Among airports handling five to 15mn passengers annually, Kaohsiung International Airport earned Platinum; Cochin International Airport, Gold; and Jaipur International Airport, Silver.In the under-5mn category, the winners are Nadi International Airport (Platinum), Sunshine Coast Airport (Gold), and New Plymouth Airport (Silver).The judging panel included Christopher Paling of Manchester Metropolitan University, Christopher Surgenor of GreenAir Online, Jennifer Desharnais of ACI World, aviation environmental consultant Dr Panagiotis Karamanos, and Baronci.The Green Airports Recognition programme was established by ACI Asia-Pacific with the support of the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Council. 

The US, India, Australia and Japan announced new maritime and critical minerals co-operation yesterday, reviving a forum viewed suspiciously by China following questions over the US commitment and disagreement on Iran.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio took part in the meeting in New Delhi, 10 days after President Donald Trump paid a friendly state visit to China and spoke glowingly of the two powers working together as a "G2" — a concept that the US partners, which view Beijing's rise warily, fear could shut them out.Meeting his counterparts in the Indian capital, Rubio said the Quad comprised countries "who share strong values — strong, vibrant democracies" and have "many aligned interests".The Quad said in a joint statement members would together mobilise $20bn in government and private money to strengthen critical mineral supply chains, including by identifying projects in the four countries. It was unclear if that would be entirely new funding.Critical minerals mark a rare area in which the Trump administration has turned to the more traditional diplomacy of building networks with allies, alarmed at the dominance of China in resources central to the high-end technology sector.The four powers said they would also work together on two maritime initiatives — one that combines their surveillance capabilities, and another that will provide enhanced real-time information to commercial traffic at sea.In a first, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the Quad was co-operating on assisting port development in Fiji — a key island nation in the South Pacific, where China has made a concerted push for greater influence."We recognise our obligation — our responsibility — to provide real choices, particularly as strategic circumstances in our region are deteriorating," Wong said.The Quad in a statement also set a goal of connecting South Pacific islands through undersea cables by the end of the year, integrating them economically to the four democracies rather than China.Reacting to the meeting, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that co-operation "should not be directed against any third party"."We also do not support exclusive cliques or bloc confrontations," she told reporters.Trump has been dismissive of major allies, repeatedly saying they unfairly burden the US financially.While Rubio held two Quad meetings last year, including one hours after taking office, Trump declined to commit to a four-way leaders' summit.It marked a contrast to his predecessor Joe Biden, who put a priority on alliances and vowed that Quad summits were "here to stay".Rubio said the Trump administration wanted the Quad to focus more on deliverables than meetings, and said co-operation was progressing "pretty aggressively".— Disagreement on Iran —Freedom of navigation has long been Washington's codeword for opposing China's assertiveness at sea, a particular concern for Japan.The Quad ministers said in a joint statement they were "seriously concerned" about the South China Sea and East China Sea and opposed "destabilising or unilateral actions" — a clear reference to Beijing.The US has recently pointed to the principle of freedom of navigation as it tries to rally allies to counter Iran, which has exerted control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz in response to the US-Israeli war launched on February 28 and which sent global oil prices spiralling.No US ally other than Israel has robustly supported the decision to attack Iran, enraging Trump, who has questioned the reliability of US partners he had not consulted beforehand.Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is one of the few world leaders who has voiced some understanding for the Iran war, citing concerns about Tehran's disputed nuclear programme, but he has not assisted the war effort and Trump said he was "not happy with Australia".Japan and India have historically both maintained cordial relations with Iran, although they grudgingly complied with US sanctions on Iranian oil.

Qatar's men's national team is continuing its preparations for the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup finals, set to be held in Singapore from April 1 to 5, featuring some of the strongest teams in Asia in both the men's and women's competitions.Led by head coach Marco, the team is undergoing intensive training ahead of its departure to Singapore next Wednesday, aiming to acclimatize early and be fully ready before the official start of the competition.Qatar's squad includes Mohammed Hashem Zidan, Mubarak Jama, Dejan Janjic, and Nedim Muslic. The quartet is aiming to deliver strong performances that reflect the noticeable development of 3x3 basketball in Qatar and to compete for top positions.Qatar will begin its campaign in Group D on April 3, facing one of the teams advancing from the qualifying round in its opening match, before taking on New Zealand later the same day. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. 

QatarEnergy has awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to a joint venture of Technip Energies, Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), and Gulf Asia Contractor (GAC) for the onshore LNG (liquefied natural gas) plant of the North Field West (NFW) project.The scope of the onshore EPC contract includes two LNG mega-trains with a combined production capacity of 16mn tonnes per annum (Mtpa), as well as associated facilities for gas treatment, natural gas liquids recovery, and helium extraction.In addition to LNG production, the project is expected to produce about 175,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of condensate, ethane, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the NFW project, a key component of the world’s largest LNG expansion, and the last in a series of expansion projects that will raise Qatar’s production to 14 Mtpa.The award was marked by a signing ceremony held at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha and attended by senior executives from QatarEnergy, QatarEnergy LNG, and the EPC contractor’s member companies.The agreement was signed by His Excellency Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, also the President and CEO of QatarEnergy; Arnaud Pieton, CEO Technip Energies; Samer Khoury, Chairman of CCC, and Dr Ravi Pillai, chairman and managing director of GAC."This contract represents an important addition to the world’s largest LNG expansion project and reinforces Qatar’s commitment to meeting the growing global LNG demand,” HE al-Kaabi said.The North Field West project follows in the footsteps of the North Field East (32 Mtpa) and South (16 Mtpa) projects, placing strong emphasis on environmental performance.Key features include a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) capacity of 1.1 Mtpa, which takes it closer towards achieving its target of capturing and sequestering more than 11 Mtpa of carbon dioxide by 2035.In addition to the CCS facilities, the jetty boil-off gas recovery facilities for NFW will recover an equivalent of 0.42 Mtpa of carbon dioxide, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.A significant portion of the project’s electrical requirements will be sourced from Qatar’s solar plants.The first LNG cargo from the NFW project is expected to be produced by the end of 2031.
