MoI: Security agencies have situation under full control

The Ministry of Interior has issued a series of official statements reassuring the public that security and emergency teams have the situation fully under control, operating around the clock at the highest levels of readiness in line with pre-approved emergency protocols.Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and to venture outside only when absolutely necessary. People are also advised to keep away from windows and open or exposed areas as a precautionary measure during this period.The ministry stressed that all updates and information should be sourced exclusively from official channels, warning the public against spreading unverified claims or rumours.It explained that the activation of its early warning and alert systems is driven by precise on-the-ground assessments, and that additional precautionary steps may be taken as the situation develops.Alongside these safety directives, authorities issued a firm warning against gathering at incident sites or recording and sharing footage related to ongoing developments in the field.Members of the public were further urged to stay clear of reporting areas and active emergency response teams in the field, and to give way to ambulances and patrol vehicles so they can reach their destinations without delay.The ministry confirmed that all relevant security agencies are conducting continuous field operations through an integrated system, in close coordination with every concerned authority, maintaining the highest levels of readiness and responsiveness throughout.Qatar's national response system, the ministry reiterated, remains fully operational with all services running without interruption to safeguard the security and well-being of all people in the country.

Cardinal 'found with phone' during secret conclave to elect Pope Leo

The secret conclave that elected Pope Leo head of the Catholic Church last May was interrupted when one of the 133 cardinals involved was found carrying a cellphone, a massive security breach, a book released Sunday revealed.As the clerics were preparing to take their first vote inside the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, which was fitted with jamming equipment to prevent outside communications, security officials picked up the signal of an active mobile connection.The cardinals stared at each other incredulously, then one of the older clerics discovered he had a phone in his pocket and handed it over, according to *The Election of Pope Leo XIV, a new book by two long-time Vatican correspondents.The book does not name the cardinal or suggest he had any motive for keeping his phone, saying that the moment left him "disoriented and distressed".The scene was "unimaginable even for a film and never before seen in the history of modern conclaves", wrote the authors, Gerard O'Connell and Elisabetta Pique.One such film, the 2024 hit *Conclave, imagined a tangled web of intrigues during the fictional selection of a pontiff.Last year's unprecedented discovery of a phone was in its own way more startling than anything portrayed in that movie, O'Connell told Reuters."Reality (was) better than fiction," he said.Clerics taking part in a conclave take a vow not to communicate with the outside world and surrender their phones and all other communication devices for the duration of the proceedings, which can last for days.The Vatican press office did not respond to a request for comment about the new book, which offers behind-the-scenes details of one of the world's most secretive elections.The cardinals met in a two-day conclave from May 7-8 under an intense global spotlight to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who died in April after 12 years leading the 1.4bn-member church.Much of the speculation at the time focused on the possibility that the cardinals would elect a new pontiff from Asia or Africa, given that the conclave was the most geographically diverse in history, with clerics from 70 countries taking part.However, no candidate from those regions garnered much support, according to the book, which discloses details of the cardinals' votes for the first time based on information from interviews with participating clerics.While it is strictly forbidden for cardinals to reveal details of the secret balloting at a conclave without permission from the future pope, it is common for journalists to slowly tease out information from clerics in the years afterward.Two candidates immediately emerged as frontrunners inside the conclave, the book said.One was Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, a long-time Vatican official identified by many outlets as a leading favourite.The other was US Cardinal Robert Prevost, a figure who was mostly unknown outside church circles but would emerge as Pope Leo, the first pontiff from the US.On the first vote in the conclave, held in the evening of May 7, Prevost already received between 20-30 votes, an unusually large number, according to the book.Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who was also seen as a favourite going into the election, only ever received fewer than 10 votes in the conclave.On the fourth ballot in the afternoon of May 8, Prevost won with 108 votes.Tagle was sitting next to Prevost as the final vote was being tallied and offered the future pope a cough drop to soothe his throat, the book said.

Thousands march in Lyon over killing of far-right activist

Thousands of people marched in southeastern France Saturday under heavy security in tribute to a far-right activist whose killing, blamed on the hard left, has put the country on edge.The crowd – many wearing black and some covering their lower faces with masks – marched through the city of Lyon carrying flowers and placards bearing pictures of Quentin Deranque and the words, "justice for Quentin" and "the extreme left kills".The 23-year-old died from head injuries following clashes between radical left and far-right supporters on the sidelines of a demonstration against a politician from the left-wing France Unbowed (LFI) party in Lyon last week.Former centre-right prime minister Dominique de Villepin has called the killing of Deranque "France's Charlie Kirk moment", referring to last year's shooting of the US conservative activist.Authorities had deployed heavy security, including drones, fearing further clashes at the event, which was widely publicised online by ultra-nationalist and far-right groups and had been expected to draw thousands.Hours before the gathering, French President Emmanuel Macron had urged "everyone to remain" calm and said his government would hold a meeting next week to discuss "violent action groups" in the wake of the fatal beating, which has ignited tensions between the left and right ahead of the 2027 presidential vote."In the Republic, no violence is legitimate," said Macron, who will be unable to contest next year's election after hitting the two-term limit. "There is no place for militias, no matter where they come from."The regional prefect Fabienne Buccio, said no calls to organise a counter protest had been seen on social media but that security would be deployed into the evening to head off any clashes."We will not tolerate the slightest incident during the march, just as we will not tolerate any incident on its sidelines," she said.Before the procession set off, mourners gathered in the church frequented by Deranque before his death and his portrait was hung from the facade of the administrative headquarters of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.Laurent, a friend of Deranque, attended "to defend his memory" in the setting "where Quentin expressed himself most intensely, namely the Catholic Church and the traditional rite", he said.One of the rally's organisers, Aliette Espieux, former spokesperson for the anti-abortion movement, told AFP that she wished for a "peaceful tribute".She hit out, however, at Jordan Bardella, the president of the far-right National Rally party, which senses its best chance ever of scoring the presidency in next year's vote.Bardella had urged his supporters not to attend the rally, with Espieux saying: "I don't find that very honourable."According to the Deranque family's lawyer, Fabien Rajon, his parents will not take part in the rally, which they hoped would go ahead "without violence" and "without political statements".Several ultra-right-wing groups, including Deranque's nationalist Allobroges Bourgoin faction, had nonetheless heavily publicised the march on social media, stoking authorities' concerns of unrest if far-right and hard-left activists from elsewhere in Europe travelled to France for the event.Ahead of the Lyon rally, some residents living near the march's planned route had barricaded the ground floor windows of their apartments."At my age, I'm not going to play the tough guy. If I have to go out somewhere, I'll avoid the places where they're marching," said Lyon local Jean Echeverria, 87."They'll just keep fighting each other, it'll never end. Between the extreme of this and the extreme of that, it's non-stop," he added.The rally went ahead despite Lyon's left-wing green mayor, Gregory Doucet, asking the state to ban it, telling reporters that he did not "want Lyon to be the capital of the far right, at any point".LFI co-ordinator Manuel Bompard backed the Lyon mayor's call for a ban, warning on X that the march would be a "fascist demonstration".However, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez declined to ban the rally, arguing that he had to "strike a balance between maintaining public order and freedom of expression" and pledging an "extremely large police deployment".Deranque's death has provoked a reaction from US President Donald Trump's administration, with State Department official Sarah Rogers on Friday branding the killing "terrorism" and claiming that "violent radical leftism is on the rise".Six men suspected of involvement in the fatal assault have been charged over the killing, while a parliamentary assistant to a radical left-wing MP has also been charged with complicity.

Mazzraty showcases integrated dairy model, health-focused innovation at AgriteQ 2026

Mazzraty has highlighted how its integrated agricultural model is strengthening food security while expanding exports and launching new health-focused dairy innovations during the 13th Qatar International Agricultural Exhibition (AgriteQ 2026).Adel Aboulaila, general manager of the Dairy Division at Al Mana Holding Group, said that Mazzraty used its golden sponsorship platform to reinforce the message that “Qatar’s agricultural sector is not only growing – it is evolving”.He described Mazzraty as a fully integrated operation spanning cow and goat farms, processing factories, agri-farms for grasses and vegetables, as well as poultry, fertiliser and animal feed divisions.“We are participating with all our divisions: poultry, dairy, agri-farm, fertiliser, and animal feed,” Aboulaila said.He stressed that exhibitions such as AgriteQ provide both B2B (business to business) and B2C (business to consumer) opportunities, strengthening supply chains while opening export doors.“For B2B, many suppliers are coming here; we can make some good deals for our raw materials,” Aboulaila said. “And also some people who are coming from abroad. It’s also a good chance for exporting our products.”He said that Mazzraty products are already available in Oman and Bahrain, with further export channels in progress.The participation also supports engagement with HORECA (hotel, restaurant and café/catering) clients and enhances consumer awareness.“For B2C, it’s a good chance to create awareness about our products,” Aboulailasaid. “Some of our new products were launched during the exhibition.”Among the highlights was the launch of Mazzraty’s new “Pro Line”, which focuses on high-protein, low-fat dairy, and hydration solutions.“This is mainly for the healthy products,” Aboulaila said.The line includes Greek-style drinkable yoghurt, stirred yoghurt in plain and vegetable varieties, as well as electrolyte dehydration drinks.“Importantly, the products contain no added sugar. The sweeteners are coming from the fruits itself,” he noted, citing strawberry and beet variations.The new portfolio introduces children’s desserts, including chocolate pudding, vanilla pudding, cream caramel, and pistachio pudding.Beyond product launches, Aboulaila reflected on Qatar’s agricultural progress.“There has been a lot of developments that have happened in Qatar in the last few years, including many projects and Qatari companies,” he added.
