Al Rayyan booked their place in the final of the Gulf Champions League for Clubs after defeating Kuwait’s Al Qadsia 2-0 at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in the semi-final Sunday. Goals from Roger Guedes in the 17th minute and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the 50th sealed a deserved victory as Al Rayyan produced a controlled and confident performance to advance to the title decider. Al Rayyan asserted their dominance early through high pressing and sustained attacking pressure, opening the scoring when Abdulaziz Hatem delivered a precise pass to Guedes, who drove into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot into the net. The home side continued to threaten and created several chances, but the first half ended with Al Rayyan holding a narrow one-goal advantage. After the break, Al Rayyan maintained their momentum and doubled their lead from a corner taken by Khalid Ali. The ball rebounded off the goalkeeper and Mitrovic reacted quickest to finish from close range in the 50th minute. Al Rayyan then managed the game effectively, preserving their lead for the remainder of the match to secure progression to the final. They will now face Saudi Arabia’s Al Shabab, who advanced to the final after defeating Iraq’s Zakho SC 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time in the other semi-final at Khalifa International Stadium.

Barcelona have carried their fury beyond the dugout and into UEFA’s inbox, lodging a formal complaint over ‌the officiating in their 2-0 home ​defeat by Atletico Madrid ‌in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. The ‌row centres on ‌an incident early in ‌the second half when Barca appealed for a penalty after Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso appeared to have put the ball back into play from a goal kick before defender Marc Pubill handled it inside the six-yard box to retake it. Referee Istvan Kovacs waved play on and the VAR ​team did not summon him to the monitor, drawing furious reactions from the Barcelona bench. “Barcelona inform that the club ‌legal services have submitted a complaint ​to UEFA today regarding the events in ​the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid,” the club said in an official statement. “The complaint centres around a specific action. In the 54th minute of the match, after play had been restarted correctly, an opponent player picked up the ball in their area without being shown the corresponding penalty,” ‌it added. “Barcelona understand that ‌this decision, along with a grave lack of intervention by VAR, represents a major error. Accordingly, the club has requested an investigation be opened, access to refereeing communications, and where applicable, official acknowledgment of the errors and the adoption of the relevant measures.” Interpretations of similar incidents have varied. In ​the Champions League quarter-finals in April 2024, the referee did not award a penalty to Bayern Munich after Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes touched the ball following what appeared to be a restart from goalkeeper David Raya. Later in 2024, VAR intervened to award Club Brugge a penalty in a comparable exchange ‌involving Aston Villa ​goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and defender Tyrone Mings. After the game, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick tore into the officiating, raging over ‌a second-half penalty call and Pau Cubarsi’s ​red card that left ‌his team a man down before halftime. “I don’t know why VAR hasn’t been used. The referee ... I think he’s brilliant. We all make mistakes, ‌but what’s the point of VAR? I ​just can’t understand it. It should have been ​a penalty, a second yellow and a red card as he already had a booking. This is exactly what shouldn’t happen,” Flick said. Atletico manager Diego Simeone saw it differently. “It’s a matter of common sense,” Simeone told reporters. “The referee saw it as it was. That Marc (Pubill) received what appeared to be a pass from his teammate to ‌start the move, the ‌referee saw it the same way as Marc saw it. Then we can look at as many situations as we like.” Barcelona had already been reduced to 10 men in the 44th minute when Cubarsi was sent off for hauling down Giuliano Simeone as the last man. Julian Alvarez brilliantly curled in the resulting free kick before ​the interval and Alexander Sorloth sealed the win after the break. Flick also questioned the dismissal. “I’m not sure if he made enough contact because the ball was behind him; I’m not entirely sure,” he said. “I don’t know. It might be, or it might not be. I don’t know if he touched him enough. But in other situations, when ‌the ball is ​touched by the hand, it’s very clear to me.” 

Andy Robertson will bring down the curtain on his nine-year career at Liverpool at the end of the season, the faltering Premier League champions announced.The 32-year-old has made 373 appearances for the club, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League as a key member of the side that restored the Reds to the top of the English and European game under Jurgen Klopp. However, he has dropped down the pecking order this season since the arrival of Milos Kerkez and his contract, which expires at the end of the campaign, will not be renewed.The Scotland captain is the second high-profile departure from Liverpool in the coming months after Mohamed Salah announced he will also depart at the end of the season. “I’ll always look back on amazing memories at this football club, I’ve put my heart and soul into the club for nine years and I’ve not got many regrets,” said Robertson. “I’ve grown as a man and as a person. This club will always mean the world to me, the fans will mean the world to me. It has been a hell of a journey.”Less than a year on from winning the Premier League, Liverpool have endured a miserable campaign, marked by tragedy off the field. A close friend of Robertson’s, forward Diogo Jota died in a car accident in July. On the field, Arne Slot has struggled to find the right balance from an expensively assembled squad that sits fifth in the Premier League.Liverpool were also dumped out of the FA Cup 4-0 by Manchester City last weekend and lost 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. Robertson’s rise was one of the success stories of Klopp’s glorious reign at Anfield.Signed from relegated Hull for £8mn ($11mn) in 2017, he quickly became a fan favourite. He sits behind only former team-mate Trent Alexander Arnold as the defender with most assists in Premier League history.On top of Premier League and Champions League glory, Robertson won the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. “I’m still fully focused on trying to end this season as positively as possible, to help these lads and to try to give a few more good moments to the fans,” added Robertson. “That’s my aim and hopefully then we can do it and maybe closer to the end of the season you’ll have me down a camera crying my eyes out.” 

League leaders Al Sadd moved within touching distance of retaining the Qatar Stars League title after securing a vital 3-1 victory over Al Sailiya, while Al Shamal’s hopes of a historic maiden crown suffered a significant blow following their 0-2 defeat to Al Shahania Wednesday.Al Sadd now have five-point advantage over Al Shamal, who will first take on Qatar SC on Monday in their rescheduled fixture before facing Al Sadd in the final round on April 28, a clash that could ultimately decide the destination of the title. Despite having the extra match to play, the defeat to Al Shahania has tilted the momentum in favour of the leaders.Akram Afif starred for Al Sadd with a brace in their win over Al Sailiya at Al Bayt Stadium, scoring in the 10th and 48th minutes, while Roberto Firmino added a third goal in the 70th minute to strengthen The Wolves’ grip at the summit. Al Sailiya, battling to avoid relegation, managed a late consolation through Anwar El Ghazi but remained rooted at the bottom.Earlier, Al Shahania delivered a disciplined performance to upset Al Shamal at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Goals from Francesco Antonucci in the 14th minute and Pelle van Amersfoort in the 76th minute secured three valuable points for Al Shahania, lifting them to 20 points and boosting their survival chances.Al Ahli boosted their survival prospects with a crucial 2-1 win over Al Duhail, courtesy of goals from Michel Vlap and Julian Draxler, while Qatar SC and Al Arabi settled for a 1-1 draw in a closely contested encounter.The fight to avoid relegation remains wide open heading into the final stretch of the season. Al Sailiya stay at the bottom with 19 points but still have two matches remaining, keeping their survival hopes alive. Just above them, Umm Salal and Al Shahania are level on 20 points, while Al Ahli have moved slightly clear on 23 points. With only a few points separating the bottom four teams, the relegation picture is likely to be decided in the final round.Elsewhere, Al Rayyan strengthened their push for a top-three finish with a convincing 3-0 victory over Umm Salal. Roger Guedes struck twice to take his league tally to 20 goals this season, while Rodrigo Moreno also found the net as Al Rayyan stay in third place.Al Wakrah staged a dramatic late comeback to draw 3-3 with Al Gharafa in one of the most entertaining matches of the round. Trailing 3-1 late in the game, Al Wakrah fought back through Luis Alberto and a stoppage-time equaliser from Almahdi Ali to salvage a point. 

The Diamond League athletics meeting in Doha has been postponed for six weeks and will now take place on June 19 due to the war in the Middle East, organisers announced.The United States and Iran agreed on Tuesday a two-week ceasefire to the war that has killed thousands and hammered the global economy. The Diamond League organisers had previously said the opening leg of this year's series would go ahead as planned on May 8, but have now decided to delay the event."In recent weeks, the Diamond League has been monitoring the situation in Doha, working in close coordination with meeting organisers, Qatari authorities and other stakeholders. In the interests of athlete and spectator safety, a decision has now been taken to postpone the meeting. Should conditions allow, it will now be held on June 19," they said in a statement.The competition will also be moved from the Qatar Sports Club to the Khalifa International Stadium in case of higher temperatures. The Khalifa stadium, which is temperature controlled, hosted the world athletics championships in 2019 and matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.The Diamond League is the elite one-day meeting series in track and field, a season that features 15 meets in 13 different countries across four different continents. The first Diamond League meeting will instead be in Shanghai on May 16.Several major sporting events in the Middle East have been postponed or cancelled because of the war the United States and Israel launched on Iran, including the Formula One grands prix in Bahrain and Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia.Both were scheduled for mid-April and have been cancelled. In football, the Finalissima, which was to pit European champions Spain against Copa America winners Argentina on March 27 in Qatar, was called off.The Qatar motorcycling Grand Prix, initially scheduled for the weekend of April 12, has been postponed to November 8, while a gymnastics World Cup event scheduled to take place in Doha in April was also cancelled. However, a horse racing meeting in Dubai, carrying prize money of $30.5mn and featuring the Dubai World Cup, did go ahead on March 28.
