French superstar Kylian Mbappe says the knee injury that kept him sidelined for almost two months is "behind him" and there had never been a concern he would miss this year's World Cup.The 27-year-old Real Madrid striker admitted he had not been at his best mentally during the 54-day absence – the longest of his career. "There was a lot of frustration, anger and anxiety," the French captain said.Mbappe, who along with the French squad flew to the United States for friendlies against Brazil on Thursday and then Colombia Sunday, came on as a substitute for a few minutes in last week's Champions League last-16 match at Manchester City.He also played over 25 minutes for Real – for whom he is top scorer this campaign with 38 goals in 34 appearances – in the 3-2 derby win over Atletico on Sunday. "It is behind me," he said of the injury. "I put myself under a regime where I wanted to return gently but with a hunger to play. I hope I am going to be able to play during the international break and make a difference."The France captain – a World Cup winner in 2018 and runner-up in 2022 – said he had been annoyed by the rumour mill suggesting his injury was more serious than it actually was. He had avoided undergoing surgery after scans he had in Paris at the beginning of March revealed he would not require an intervention. "Lots of people gave their own diagnosis, I heard many false things," said Mbappe, who was appearing at an event of an insurance company he invested in in Paris on Monday.Mbappe said there had never been a doubt about the injury preventing him from playing at what will be his third World Cup finals in June. "No, that was never a topic of discussion," he said. "At worst I could have had a partial rupture (of the ligament) which would have ruled me out till April. There was never a debate about the World Cup or the climax to the season with Real Madrid."In spite of the sprain and the resulting pain the former PSG star played part of January and February, admitting he and Real "had tried to manage it as best as possible". "One has to look at the positive, today, I have no pain and we are still in the hunt for trophies, that is what is most important," he said. "We will have time afterwards to assess how it was handled. I am not going to go into the details, I will say I was not at my best in handling this period, I was not the happiest of players but I am delighted that is behind me now. All (the pain) is gone."Mbappe said he was looking forward to pitting his wits against the Brazilians, who are managed by Carlo Ancelotti, who coached the Frenchman in his first season at Real. "It might be a friendly but when you play Brazil, the greatest footballing nation with five World Cup wins, it is unbelievable to play against them," he said."It is a team who could win the World Cup, it is good to compare how we are at the moment with them. Even if we cannot take a lot of learnings out of this get together, we can nevertheless take some. One thing is for sure we are not going there for a holiday, we are going there as a step in our preparations for the World Cup." 

Jos Buttler is refusing to accept his England career is over despite admitting he had a “poor tournament” at the recent T20 World Cup. Widely regarded as one of the outstanding white-ball batsmen of his generation, Buttler managed just 87 runs in eight innings at the tournament as England reached the semi-finals before losing to co-hosts and eventual champions India. “Obviously I had a poor tournament, which is disappointing,” Buttler, who remains on an England and Wales central contract, said on his For the Love of Cricket podcast with former England fast bowler Stuart Broad. “But I have been playing some of the best cricket of my (career) in recent years, so hopefully I can get back to playing my best. “I certainly have ambitions (to play for England again), but no longer being a captain, I am not a selector and whatever, so what will be, will be.” Buttler, 35, is set to play for Gujarat Titans in the upcoming Indian Premier League and hopes time away after the World Cup “up the mountains” in France with his family will leave him feeling reinvigorated. “I couldn’t have been further away from cricket, which for me at the time was just perfect,” said Buttler. “It is exactly what I needed.” “Obviously the tournament didn’t go personally how I would have liked it to go, and I just felt like I needed some space from cricket and not to think about the game, and I could not have been further away from cricket where I was in that week.” Buttler, a member of England’s 2019 one-day international World Cup-winning team and also the skipper for their T20 triumph in Australia three years later, added: “It was really refreshing - I really enjoyed it, a complete sort of release, and slowly but surely, I would say at the start of this week, (I am) just starting to reflect a bit and have a few thoughts about what is important to me and my cricket, and why it probably didn’t go quite as I would’ve liked. “There’s elements that I actually don’t really know exactly,” he said. “For all your best intentions and hard work and efforts to perform, it just didn’t work, and sometimes that is OK as well.“That is something I have had to realise. It wasn’t for a lack of effort, it just didn’t quite happen.” 

India’s One-Day International captain Shubman Gill said winning next year’s World Cup is the ultimate ‌goal for his team, especially ​after they fell ‌at the final hurdle in ‌the 2023 edition ‌on home soil.India’s unbeaten ‌campaign in that home World Cup ended in defeat by Australia in the final in Ahmedabad.India have since won back-to-back T20 World Cups but Gill has set his sights on 50-overs cricket’s biggest prize when the tournament takes place ​in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October-November next year.“We felt like we were so ‌close last time,” Gill said ​yesterday.“To be able to get another crack at it in South Africa, it’s going to be a great opportunity for us. Winning a World Cup in any format for the country is the ultimate goal. So obviously, that is something that ‌sometimes runs in ‌my mind.”India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said their 20-overs World Cup triumph in 2024 had sparked a run of success for the country’s cricketers, with the men winning the Champions Trophy and the women lifting a first ODI World Cup ​title last year.“That one step was important, that taste was important for everyone to understand what it takes to win an ICC trophy,” Suryakumar said. “Now, there is no looking back. If this wonderful thing has started, let’s try and collect as ‌many (trophies) as ​possible.” 

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that her country is prepared to host Iran's first-round matches at the 2026 World Cup if needed due to the conflict in the Middle East.Iran's participation at this summer's finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico has been in doubt since the war began last month, with President Donald Trump warning that Iranian players' safety would be at risk if they travelled to the US.Iran's football federation has opened talks with FIFA about potentially relocating its matches from the United States, though the global governing body has so far maintained that the tournament's schedule remains unchanged.Asked directly if Mexico was open to hosting the matches, and if the decision will purely come down to FIFA logistics, Sheinbaum told a press conference: "Yes. Mexico maintains diplomatic relations with every country in the world, therefore we will wait to see what FIFA decides."Iran's place at the tournament was thrown into question after the US and Israel launched a massive offensive against the Islamic Republic, which responded with waves of missiles and drones targeting Israeli territory and American targets across the Middle East.FIFA president Gianni Infantino initially said that Trump had given assurances that the Iranian team – scheduled to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by Egypt in Seattle – would still be welcome.But the Republican president then triggered uproar last week after stating that Iran's football team should not travel to the tournament "for their own life and safety". Iran hit back at Trump's comments saying that "no one can exclude Iran's national team from the World Cup".Iran were the second Asian team after Japan to qualify for the World Cup, securing their place almost a year ago as they topped their qualifying group. On Monday, Iranian football chief Mehdi Taj wrote on social media: "When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America. We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran's matches in the World Cup in Mexico."Iranian football authorities "are currently discussing with FIFA whether it is feasible – since they were originally scheduled to go to the United States – to see if they can" move Iran's games to Mexico, confirmed Sheinbaum. "The matter is under review and we will provide an update in due course."When contacted on the matter, FIFA said it was "looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025". "FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including IR Iran, to discuss planning for the FIFA World Cup 2026," a spokesperson said.The Iran team's base camp for the tournament is currently slated to be located in Tucson, Arizona. Abolfazl Pasandideh, Iran's ambassador to Mexico, on Monday denounced "the US government's lack of cooperation regarding visa issuance and the provision of logistical support" for the Iranian delegation ahead of the World Cup, in a statement published on the embassy's website.Should Iran not take part in the World Cup, it is not yet clear which country might replace them.

India clung on to beat England by seven runs in a thrilling T20 World Cup semi-final in Mumbai Thursday, despite Jacob Bethell’s superb 105 that put Harry Brook’s side within a whisker of pulling off a record chase. After Sanju Samson’s scintillating 89 laid the platform for India to pile up a massive 253-7, England finished agonisingly short on 246-7 after a brilliant effort masterminded by Bethell. Phil Salt (5), Brook (7) and Jos Buttler (25) fell early to leave England 64-3. But Bethell, aided by partnerships of 77 with Will Jacks (35) and 50 with Sam Curran (18), kept England in the hunt. The left-hander hit seven sixes and eight fours in his 48-ball thrash before his run out in the final over finally allowed India to celebrate in front of 35,000 jubilant fans in Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium. India will face New Zealand in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad as they attempt to become the first team to retain the trophy and the first to win it on home soil. “It’s an unbelievable feeling, going to Ahmedabad for the final, a special feeling for the boys,” said India captain Suryakumar Yadav, who paid tribute to England. “They were always in the game, always in the chase. I was very nervous, I’m glad someone didn’t check my heart rate,” he said, before looking forward to the final. “In India, going for the title, there will be pressure, there will be nerves but the boys will be excited as well,” Suryakumar added. England captain Brook praised the way his side went about attacking a daunting target. “All of our lads should be really proud of the way we played tonight and throughout this competition,” said Brook. The hosts, having been asked to bat by Brook, earlier flayed England’s attack to all parts of the ground, hitting 19 sixes and 18 fours. Samson, who scored 97 not out in the previous match against the West Indies, signalled his intent with a four and six off Jofra Archer’s first over. But he was given a life on 15 when Brook dropped a simple chance at mid-off off Archer. It proved a costly mistake as, helped by some ill-disciplined bowling, Samson raced to his half-century off 26 balls with a huge six as Liam Dawson’s first over was pummelled for 19 runs.“I’ll hold my hands up and say that I made a big mistake there, dropping Samson,” said Brook. “As the old saying goes, catches win matches. At the end of the day, it cost us.” Ishan Kishan put on 97 from 48 balls with Samson for the second wicket before the left-hander holed out to Jacks off Adil Rashid in the 10th over to make it 117-2. Samson powered on until Jacks returned to have him caught by Salt in the deep in the 14th over at which point India were 160-3. “It feels really great,” said Samson after being named player of the match. “I kind of knew that I got some form going from the last game, so I thought I need to continue. Even 250 looked chaseable here and England played really well. All credit goes to how they batted and we really had a great semi-final.” Shivam Dube continued the onslaught with 43 off 25 balls with four sixes before being run out by Brook’s direct hit. Hardik Pandya hit 27 off 12 balls late on and Tilak Varma 21 off seven to take India past the 250 mark. Jacks was the pick of the England bowlers with 2-40 but the wayward Archer was plundered, taking 1-61 off his four overs. BRIEF SCORES: India 253 for 7 (Samson 89, Dube 43, Jacks 2-40) beat England 246 for 7 (Bethell 105, Jacks 35, Pandya 2-38) by seven runs. 

Semi-final hero Finn Allen said New Zealand’s thumping demi-final win over South Africa was a “huge confidence booster” ahead of going for their maiden T20 World Cup title in Sunday’s final. Opener Allen hit the fastest-ever T20 World Cup century, off 33 balls, to give his side a crushing nine-wicket win over South Africa and set up a final against India or England in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Allen blasted 10 fours and eight sixes as New Zealand raced to their victory target of 170 with 7.1 overs to spare at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. It was a bruising defeat for 2024 runners-up South Africa, who had been unbeaten in the tournament. “They fight hard, they come hard at us, they’ve got good tall, fast bowlers and it makes it challenging for us,” Allen said of Aiden Markram’s South Africa. “Their boys hit the ball hard, so to get one over them is a huge confidence booster for us going into Sunday. They’ve been the in-form team the whole tournament.” The Auckland-born Allen rose to the occasion in the knockout match after ordinary outings in the tournament apart from his unbeaten 84 against the UAE in a group fixture. Allen said his heroics in India would have kept his parents and the nation awake to cheer the team. “I’m sure my parents are up watching the whole game. Hopefully they’re proud. But I think as a nation, I think hopefully everyone gets behind us and rallies around us for Sunday,” said Allen. The final will begin at around 2.30am on Monday morning in New Zealand. “Obviously, difficult time for people to watch back home but I’m sure people were keeping tabs on the game and hopefully they can get up and have a Monday off at work and watch the final.” Allen put on 117 with opening partner Tim Seifert, who made 58, to pummel the opposition attack that included high-quality pacemen Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. Seifert was the early aggressor as he raced to 41 off 21 balls before Allen took over and finished with two fours, two sixes and a four to raise his hundred and seal victory. Allen said batting with Seifert makes life easy. “He’s in incredible form, he’s an incredible player and I think he’s just showing the world what he can do,” said Allen. “And I think that makes it easy for me to sit back and have the best seat in the house. So, yeah, it’s good fun batting with Timmy.” New Zealand squeaked into the semi-finals on net run-rate ahead of Pakistan and lost to South Africa by seven wickets in the group stage. But Allen said a five-match T20 series in India that the visitors lost 4-1 ahead of the World Cup prepared them for the grind. “I think it shows the importance of that India series that the boys played before the World Cup,” he said. “Five games on all black soil (pitches) and I think it just shows that as a team we get up for the fight (in) those important fixtures.”
