With non-hydrocarbon sector spearheading expansion, Qatar’s GDP growth has been forecast to rise from 2.7% this year to 3.2% in 2026, according to Kuwait-based banking group NBK.In its latest economic insight titled ‘Macroeconomic Outlook 2026-2027’, NBK noted that there will be gains, especially in Qatar’s trade and services segments.Tourism stands out, with visitor arrivals and hotel occupancy rates increasing year-on-year, leveraging the country’s FIFA World Cup and events legacy.The outlook is supported by investment and reform momentum under the Third National Development Strategy (NDS3), which aims to shift economic growth from the public to the private sector by developing clusters in manufacturing, logistics, and tourism, alongside the LNG expansion plan with positive spillovers.Falling borrowing costs amid monetary easing should also lift consumption and credit demand.Meanwhile, NBK holds a conservative estimate for hydrocarbon sector growth (2.2% in 2026) due to slower LNG train rollout from the North Field East Expansion project, expected in H2, 2026.LNG capacity will rise significantly after that, increasing by 63% to 127mtpy by 2028. Inflation will average just 0.4% in 2025 amid deflation in housing rentals and transportation, accelerating to a still-contained 1.4% in 2026.Higher expenditures and lower energy receipts should see the public finances slip into a modest deficit in 2025-2026 of less than 1% of GDP. This will likely be short-lived as gas production ramps up in 2027, bringing sizeable volumetric gains to LNG exports.Public debt will continue trending lower (to 38.4% in 2026), supported by robust nominal GDP growth.Risks to the outlook include lower energy prices, reflecting a potential global economic downturn, and regional geopolitical hostilities (which materialised for a while in 2025 during the regional war albeit with limited economic impact for Qatar on that occasion).Large sovereign assets, NDS reforms, and a strong track record on project delivery bolster resilience and strengthen the outlook.“Economic growth in Qatar, Bahrain and Oman is forecast to mostly improve in 2026, lifted by looser monetary policy and sustained government reform drives.“A softer oil price environment will weigh on Bahrain’s fiscal accounts, with the deficit on a widening path despite consolidation efforts.“Meanwhile, Oman’s successful reform rollout continues to improve its economic prospects with nonoil growth accelerating. In Qatar, the outlook remains robust with solid non-hydrocarbon sector growth rates and imminent, albeit slightly delayed, inauguration of LNG expansion plants,” NBK said.

Zambia’s Patson Daka scored with a spectacular diving header in stoppage time to see his side come from behind and force a 1-1 draw with ‌Mali in their opening Group A clash at the Africa ‌Cup of Nations finals ‍Monday.Mali looked in control for most of the encounter but paid the price for sitting ⁠back in the closing stages ⁠as Zambia staged a late recovery, with Daka leaping through the air to ‍force home Mathews Banda’s curling cross two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game.Lassine Sinayoko had taken advantage of sloppy defending to give Mali a 62nd-minute lead after his strike partner El Bilal Toure had a first-half penalty saved.The penalty had been awarded after a VAR check as defender Banda caught the heel of Dorgeles ‌Nene as he attempted to clear the ball away from Mali’s dangerous winger. But Toure’s 42nd-minute spot kick was well saved by Zambia’s goalkeeper Willard Mwanza.Nene caused ‍Zambia’s defence no end of ⁠turmoil with his ‌jinxing runs down the left flank, while Sinayoko and El Toure also proved a difficult frontline duo to deal with and Mali looked as if they would cruise to an easy three-point haul.Sinayoko might have had the first goal of the game after 15 minutes when he stole possession away from Zambia’s defence, but his shot was saved.Penalty save hero Mwanza stood no chance with the Mali goal as first El Toure had an effort from a corner blocked before Sinayoko picked up the rebound and tried a shot ​which was again blocked, only ‌for the ball to fall onto his right foot and allow the Ligue 1 striker to blast ⁠it home from close range. ‍The Zambia defence was surprisingly all at sea as the corner floated in.Conceding the goal galvanised Zambia into a fightback and they had several close chances before Daka’s dramatic equaliser as Mali sat back and sought to absorb the pressure.Captain Fashion Sakala had an effort at the back post ​blocked with some 15 minutes left, and Dominic Chanda’s spectacular overhead effort soon after was plucked out of the air by Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra.Mali next meet hosts Morocco in Rabat on Friday while Zambia take on Comoros in Casablanca the same day. Morocco are at the head of the standings after the host nation opened the tournament on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in Rabat.Late last night, Group B action got underway with Angola and South Africa meeting in Marrakech followed by Egypt against Zimbabwe in Agadir.Hosts Morocco off to winning start at Africa Cup of NationsOn Sunday night, Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi scored second-half goals as hosts Morocco got their Africa Cup of Nations bid off to a winning start by beating minnows Comoros 2-0 in the tournament's opening game.Soufiane Rahimi had a penalty saved in a frustrating first half for much-fancied Morocco, but Diaz fired home from inside the area 10 minutes after the interval at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in the capital Rabat.Substitute El Kaabi then got the second with a stunning overhead kick, and the victory on a wet and cold night sets the Atlas Lions up for the potentially tougher tests to come in Group A against Mali and Zambia. The result also allowed Morocco, Africa's best team in the FIFA rankings in 11th place, to extend their world-record winning run to 19 consecutive matches. Morocco's next game will be on Friday against Mali.
