Providing a huge boost for Qatar’s efforts at sustainable environment and setting a new benchmark in sustainable practices, a built-up area of over 3.1bn square feet has been awarded Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) recognition in Qatar, a top official revealed to Gulf Times.“The adoption of the Global Sustainability Assessment System inside Qatar has been phenomenal, driven heavily by public sector leadership such as the Public Works Authority of Qatar (Ashghal) and Qatar Museums,” Dr Yousef Alhorr, founding chairman, Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (Gord), headquartered at Qatar Science and Technology Park, disclosed.“Cumulatively, nearly 2,700 projects in Qatar have achieved GSAS green building recognition, representing a massive aggregated built-up area of over 3.1bn square feet. This includes foundational infrastructure such as the FIFA World Cup 2022 stadiums, ISF City, and Qatar Rail network,” he said in an exclusive interview.GSAS is the first green building and infrastructure rating system in the Middle East and North Africa. Developed by Gord, it measures environmental impacts to promote sustainable design, construction, and operations.Dr Alhorr said that in 2025 alone, nearly 200 projects achieved GSAS recognition in Qatar. “Of these, more than 150 were acknowledged for incorporating sustainable design and construction practices while the remaining projects were recognised for sustainable site development and environmentally responsible operations after occupancy,” underlined, Dr Alhorr.According to the official, the diversity of these buildings is very striking and important. He said: “When we look at the specific projects driving this momentum, the diversity is truly remarkable representing a broad mix of sectors, including healthcare facilities, educational buildings, parks and public spaces, residential communities, and commercial and mixed-use developments. Government-related entities played a decisive role with organisations such as Ashghal accounting for the largest share of certified green projects.”Dr Alhorr noted that Qatar Foundation demonstrated an extensive portfolio undergoing environmental verification, including the largest number of projects achieving GSAS Operations Platinum certification while in the healthcare sector, the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) advanced GSAS adoption across its facilities, reinforcing operational sustainability standards.“At the same time, private and semi-government developments also made notable progress, with Lusail City mixed-use development and Gewan Island residential buildings at The Pearl-Qatar setting benchmarks in sustainable luxury design. Commercial and institutional landmarks such as Vodafone’s headquarters in Msheireb and The View Hospital further highlighted cross-sector engagement, alongside large-scale recognitions for the QIN Master Plan and Qatar Free Zones, particularly Umm Al Houl and Marsa Districts, collectively representing the wide-ranging integration of GSAS across Qatar’s built environment ecosystem,” he highlighted.GSAS evaluates projects using eight main criteria. They are: Urban Connectivity; Site Selection; Energy Consumption; Water Use; Material Selection; Indoor Environment; Cultural & Economic Values and Management & Operations. Projects achieve certification by scoring points across all categories. Developers and contractors use the GSASgate Platform to track project progress, manage assessments, and secure final accreditation.Dr Alhorr said that Gord applies a truly 360-degree approach to sustainability. He stated: “Gord treats innovation as a continuous lifecycle that begins with ideation and extends all the way to regional and international scaling. Through the Gord Institute, we actively research and incubate proprietary, low-carbon intellectual property tailored for the harsh climate realities of the Mena region and the Global South.”The official pointed out that GSAS is increasing being adapted in several other countries in the region. He remarked: “Looking beyond Qatar, we are witnessing an exciting new chapter for regional sustainability. With the GCC Standardisation Organisation officially adopting GSAS as a regional standard (GSO 3000:2025), we are expecting a significant spike in GSAS projects across the region. To support this momentum, our capacity-building activities have actively started to roll out, effectively driving the implementation phase forward.”“In terms of regional footprint, GSAS frameworks have already been successfully implemented in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, on an introductory and foundational level, our systems have expanded through targeted capacity building and strategic alliance levels into Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Algeria,” added, Dr Alhorr. 

Qatar Charity (QC) has signed a framework co-operation agreement with Ibn Sina University Hospital Centre in Morocco to support life-saving treatment for children with congenital heart defects, expanding their access to specialised medical care that can improve their health and long-term quality of life.The agreement reflects the QC’s strategic approach, implemented through its office in Morocco, to building effective institutional partnerships that create sustainable humanitarian impact beyond immediate assistance.The organisation aims to develop co-operation models grounded in integration, knowledge exchange, and efficient resource use to better serve vulnerable communities.As one of Morocco’s leading university healthcare institutions, Ibn Sina University Hospital Centre has specialised expertise and advanced capabilities in treating complex medical cases, making the partnership a crucial step in strengthening paediatric cardiac care services.Under the agreement, support will focus on interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures for children with congenital heart defects, a highly specialised area of medicine.This advanced technique can treat certain heart defects without open-heart surgery, reducing surgical risks, accelerating recovery, and improving children’s long-term quality of life.These procedures require advanced equipment and specialised expertise, making them costly and often beyond the reach of low-income families.The partnership therefore carries significant humanitarian value by helping ease this burden for families in need.The agreement is expected to enable children from underprivileged families to receive high-quality cardiac catheterisation services, strengthen Ibn Sina University Hospital Centre’s capacity to manage complex cases, and provide a practical model of co-operation between healthcare institutions and humanitarian organisations.Professor Raouf Mohsen, director of Ibn Sina University Hospital Centre, praised the initiative as valuable support for Morocco’s national healthcare system.Eng. Mohammed Abu Halloub, director of Qatar Charity’s office in Morocco, said that the agreement reflects Qatar Charity’s commitment to supporting child health in Morocco and expanding co-operation with national healthcare institutions. 

The State of Qatar has condemned an Iranian attack on Iraq's Kurdistan Region as a violation of Iraq's sovereignty and a breach of international law.A Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on Friday said the attack represented a "flagrant violation" of the sovereignty of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and warned of its wider consequences on regional stability.The ministry stressed the need to prevent further repercussions from "unjustified" attacks, urging continued reliance on dialogue and diplomacy, along with efforts to reduce tensions and strengthen regional and international security.The statement also reaffirmed Doha's full solidarity with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, expressing support for measures taken to protect their sovereignty and security.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed that one child sustained an injury due to falling shrapnel resulting from interception operations, and is currently receiving the necessary medical care. In a statement today, the Ministry said that in the context of the continuous monitoring of developments on the ground, the Ministry of Interior confirmed that security authorities and Civil Defense teams have initiated their procedures in accordance with approved response plans following the Iranian attack that targeted the country this morning. Based on received reports and field findings, the Ministry confirmed that one child sustained an injury due to falling shrapnel resulting from interception operations, and is currently receiving the necessary medical care, it added in the statement. The Ministry also emphasized the strict necessity of obtaining information solely from official sources, and refraining from circulating rumors or publishing any unverified information, photos, or video clips, in order to avoid legal accountability. The competent security authorities at the Ministry of Interior continued their work with full readiness around the clock, enhancing rapid response, ensuring the preservation of community security and safety, and maintaining the normal flow of services

The State of Qatar strongly condemned the repeated Iranian attacks on the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the State of Kuwait, considering them a blatant violation of the sovereignty of these countries and a flagrant breach of international law.In a statement issued Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to spare the region the repercussions of these unjustified attacks and to maintain the course of dialogue, diplomacy, and de-escalation, thereby contributing to the consolidation of security and stability at both the regional and international levels.The Ministry reiterated the State of Qatar's full solidarity with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the State of Kuwait, and its support for all measures they take to uphold their sovereignty and security.
