Visual Arts Centre explores enduring legacy of gypsum ornamentation

The Ministry of Culture’s Visual Arts Centre organised a lecture exploring gypsum ornamentation and its role in reconstituting the legacy of traditional architecture through contemporary expression.  Delivered by Mohammed Saeed al-Bloushi, a cultural heritage expert at Qatar’s Ministry of Culture, the lecture highlighted the role of gypsum ornamentation in crafting traditional architecture and showcasing the cultural identity and visual memory of a place through a combination of patterns and forms.  The session shed light on mechanisms for repurposing these traditional arts through contemporary approaches and artistic visions. Al-Bloushi opened the lecture by pointing out that gypsum ornamentation wasn’t a mere decorative afterthought added once construction had been completed. Rather, he explained, it was an integral component of a building’s original design, closely related to the dimensions and functions of its spaces, ceiling heights, and the interplay of light and shadow.  Al-Bloushi elucidated how gypsum’s remarkable malleability and suitability for carving and casting enabled traditional artisans to transform a simple material readily available in their surroundings into a rich artistic medium characterised by lines, masses, and voids that interact continuously with light.  He reviewed the principal patterns of gypsum ornamentation, foremost among them geometric designs founded on precise relationships of repetition, rotation, symmetry, and interlacing. The presenter explained that the apparent complexity of these compositions stems from simple rules that recur and overlap to create an integrated visual system. This approach has significant parallels with contemporary computational design.  Al-Bloushi further stressed that local architectural identity can’t be reduced to a particular form or decorative motif. Rather, it is the product of a broader interplay among materials, climate, craftsmanship, social memory, and place.  The lecture also addressed the challenges besetting efforts to preserve gypsum ornamentation, given that the materials from which it is made are highly susceptible to environmental factors and conditions. In conclusion, the session emphasised the importance of moving architectural heritage beyond mere documentation and preservation toward inspiration and contemporary expression.Al-Bloushi stressed that the true value of gypsum ornamentation lies in understanding its relationship with light, mass, and human scale, thereby enabling its underlying design principles to inform contemporary artistic practice.

QCS urges women to prioritise early breast cancer detection

Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has urged women to prioritise breast health, recognise potential warning signs and seek timely medical advice, stressing that early detection remains one of the most effective ways to improve breast cancer treatment outcomes and survival rates. Mona Ashkanani, director general of QCS, said raising awareness of risk factors, understanding what normal breast appearance and feel are, and recognising unusual changes are essential steps in combating the disease. She urged women not to delay seeking medical advice if they notice any changes, stressing that timely diagnosis can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment. Breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, accounting for about one in six cancer-related deaths among females and around 25% of all cancer cases diagnosed in women each year, according to figures cited by the society. Ashkanani said the figures underscore the importance of sustained public awareness, prevention and access to appropriate screening and medical services. As part of the global Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign, known as Pink October, QCS has launched its “Ja Alwaqt” campaign to encourage early detection, promote healthier lifestyles and extend awareness messages to different segments of society. The campaign’s name, which conveys the message that “the time has come,” encourages women to prioritise their health and undergo appropriate examinations. It also highlights the importance of supporting women living with breast cancer and those who have recovered from the disease. Ashkanani said the society designed this year’s campaign to reach the public in different settings, reflecting its belief that breast cancer awareness is a shared social responsibility. She stressed that awareness efforts should continue throughout the year rather than being confined to October. “Ja Alwaqt” campaign Pink October Campaign (reveal)

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly integrating into Qatar’s main industrial and energy value chains to strengthen national economic resilience, the top official of Qatar Chamber has said.“As the economy expands, SMEs are increasingly integrating into major industrial, infrastructure and energy value chains as suppliers, service providers, technology partners, and specialised subcontractors,” Qatar Chamber Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani explained.In an interview with Oxford Business Group for ‘The Report: Qatar 2026’, Sheikh Khalifa stated that growing SME participation strengthens local content and supports long-term economic transformation.According to Sheikh Khalifa, SMEs play a vital role in creating jobs and fostering innovation.Sheikh Khalifa noted that accelerating digital transformation through artificial intelligence and smart logistics will enhance productivity and global connectivity. He said investing in human capital and fostering a culture of innovation remain equally important to ensure businesses stay adaptable.Addressing global trade challenges, Sheikh Khalifa said companies are increasingly building flexible supply chains that can withstand market shocks.Qatar’s broadened supplier networks and advanced logistics solutions have allowed it to maintain reliable trade flows even during challenging periods, he pointed out.“The country’s infrastructure, integrated logistics ecosystem, and strong public-private coordination have allowed it to maintain reliable trade flows and market access even during challenging periods. “As global supply chains evolve, these strengths enable Qatar to manage volatility effectively, anchoring its role as a leading regional centre for trade. What is particularly noteworthy is that adaptability has become a core business strategy,” he said.Sheikh Khalifa explained that investor confidence in non-energy sectors depends heavily on stability, resilience, and policy consistency. A transparent regulatory framework and a strong fiscal position provide a solid foundation for long-term investment beyond energy, he explained.On logistics and re-export activity, Sheikh Khalifa highlighted that the private sector can strengthen Qatar’s position by transforming the country into a value-creation platform.“Amid evolving global supply chains, the private sector can strengthen the country’s role as a regional trade and logistics hub by positioning Qatar not simply as a transit point, but as a value-creation platform,” Sheikh Khalifa stated.He said, “This means attracting regional distribution centres, expanding value-added services such as assembly, packaging and fulfilment, and leveraging digital technologies to improve supply chain visibility and efficiency.”Sheikh Khalifa added: “Businesses should diversify trade partnerships, develop stronger links with emerging markets in Asia and Africa, and capitalise on Qatar’s ports, airports, and free zones.
