Investing in the space economy, a brand-new focus area on the 2026 edition of the World Investment Forum (WIF) agenda, aims to help Qatar and the wider Middle East position themselves as pivotal players in an emerging frontier long dominated by traditional superpowers.“We are also adding new topics that are pertinent to Qatar’s unique development trajectory, from investing in culture to the new topic of investing in the space economy,” stated Nan Li Collins, chair, UN Sustainable Stock Exchange Division director, when she recently announced the staging of WIF 2026 on October 25-27 at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel.The forum is hosted by the UN Trade and Development's (UNCTAD), in partnership with the State of Qatar. The UN agency has dubbed the track ‘Investing in Space: The Final Frontier’, according to Collins, who told Gulf Times that it is being organised alongside the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). Collins explained that UNOOSA is a specialised agency looking at outer space governance, collaboration, and investment partnerships. “We are working with them to look at how countries can develop the space economy and identify the latest trends, opportunities, and challenges facing this sector. During the forum, more advanced companies will share their experiences on how they are investing in the space economy.“And in the Middle East, I think many countries have established dedicated programmes and plans for space investments. In the previous forum, it was not featured, so this is a new topic we chose for this year’s edition,” Collins explained.Collins emphasised that the new focus area aims to map how developing nations can enter the space supply chain without being left behind by an increasingly exclusive global space race. She further explained that the agenda must deliberately address entry barriers and prevent capital from pooling among a select few. “Rather than having a handful of countries that are in the space race, we also want to have these discussions among other policymakers and investors to see what the opportunities are, what the entry barriers are for them, and how we can collaborate to move this agenda forward,” Collins pointed out.The push to widen participation comes as global foreign direct investment (FDI) becomes increasingly concentrated, Gulf Times reported earlier. Data from UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2026 shows that while global FDI rose 6% to $1.6tn in 2025, flows are concentrating heavily into strategic sectors like advanced technologies, AI infrastructure, and critical minerals. Among these strategic high-tech areas, the top three source nations generate nearly three-quarters of all outward investment. The top three destination markets receive more than half. UNCTAD wants to ensure space technology does not follow this same hyper-concentrated trajectory, according to Dr Vincent Beyer, legal officer, Investment Policy and Agreements at UNCTAD. Beyer noted that this shift matches broader investment trends across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Over the past decade, the GCC’s global share of attracted FDI surged sixfold, rising from 1% in 2015 to 6% in 2025. While energy and gas remain primary drivers, information and communication technology (ICT) investments have surged to near parity, Beyer also noted, adding that this broader foundation gives the region the technical and digital footing needed to back satellite infrastructure and spatial data services. Qatar’s local market reflects this trend, Beyer pointed out. Recent figures show Qatari inward FDI surged 559% to $3bn in 2025, driven largely by chemicals, energy, and ICT. On a per capita basis, Qatar ranks among the top three FDI destinations in the region, Beyer added.

Runners raced through Aspire Dome and its basement in Qatar’s newest indoor challenge, completing five extended laps within 30 minutes at the inaugural “Run the Dome 2026” event this weekend.Organised by the Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) on August 28-29, the first edition combined community fitness with a competitive speed-race format inside the air-conditioned venue.A dedicated women’s race opened the programme on Friday morning, followed by open races later in the day and yesterday, with the top finishers awarded on the final day.Ahmed Mohammed al-Hassan, championship director and executive director of facilities and events at the AZF, said the event was created to introduce a different type of race to Qatar while serving both recreational runners and more experienced athletes.“For us, it is very important to have new events in Aspire and in Qatar overall, covering the needs of the community and professionals at the same time,” he told *Gulf Times.The central challenge was not only speed, but the course itself.Aspire Dome’s standard international athletics track measures 200m, so organisers extended the route into the building’s basement to create a 1km lap.“Designing the track to be safe and extending it to 1km for each lap was a big job,” he said. “We wanted to give participants a different atmosphere and experience.”Competitors were required to complete five laps, covering close to 5km, within a 30-minute target.Al-Hassan described the format as a departure from conventional mass-participation road races, where families, children and runners of different abilities usually share the same course.“This kind of race is different. It is a challenge race,” he said. “You can run the five laps within 30 minutes. That is the challenge.”The event was open to participants aged 18 and above, with categories including runners over 50.Faster competitors who had demonstrated a sub-20-minute time over 5km were grouped separately and scheduled later, helping preserve the competitive pace of the event.Al-Hassan said most runners completed the course within the target, while those finishing later had already gained a goal for a future edition.“That is the challenge for them for next time and what makes them passionate to join us again,” he said.Aspire Dome was selected to give runners a safe, climate-controlled option during Qatar’s summer.Al-Hassan said the AZF plans to hold the race every summer, while feedback requesting categories for children and families will be considered.“Aspire’s vision is to support the community and sport, including health,” he said. “That is why we try to create different events that cover the community’s needs.”

An upcoming international conference, ‘the AsianSIL Intersessional Conference 2026,’ hosted by the College of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) later this year, aims to highlight the role of Asia in shaping the development of international law, particularly in emerging areas such as environmental governance, AI regulation and humanitarian law. The conference "Is a New Normative International Legal Order in the Making? The Asian Perspective" will explore Asia's evolving role in the international legal order. The conference will also examine Asia’s growing influence and contributions to international law in climate change, humanitarian crises, and artificial intelligence governance amid dynamic geopolitical shifts, technological advancements, and pressing global challenges. According to Dr Khalid Mubarak al-Kuwari, chair of the conference and a lecturer at the College of Law, HBKU, the AsianSIL conference has advanced international law scholarship and dialogue across Asia and beyond since 2007. Dr al-Kuwari said: “The world is undergoing profound strategic, economic, social and technological change. Positioned at the crossroads of multiple regions, Asia plays an increasingly influential role in shaping the international legal order. In this context, AsianSIL advances the rule of law, inclusive dialogue and research addressing pressing global challenges, including environmental governance, humanitarian law, international economic law and AI governance.” The conference brings together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to engage in critical dialogue and interdisciplinary exchange. It will take place over two days: Day One will feature an invitation-only junior scholarship workshop, while Day Two will host the main conference as a public session. The conference also aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue by facilitating discussions among legal scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to encourage cross-sectoral engagement. It focuses on promoting scholarly research by providing a high-level academic platform for presenting and publishing cutting-edge research in international law. The conference will feature expert-led discussions on critical topics related to environmental governance and climate action. It will examine Asia’s role in global climate agreements, regional environmental policies, and sustainable development initiatives. “For decades, issues relating to the future of the liberal international order have received considerable attention. Today, these discussions have become increasingly urgent as the world grapples with complex global problems alongside pressing regional conflicts and issues that the existing legal order seems ill-equipped to address, let alone solve,” said the dean of the college, Dr Susan L Karamanian. According to the organisers, Asia, which spans from the Pacific Ocean in the East to the Middle East in the West and is home to more than half of the world’s population, is critical to the conversation, both in defining problems and in offering solutions. There will be discussions on humanitarian law in the modern era addressing challenges in international humanitarian law, particularly in conflict zones and disaster-prone regions within Asia. AI and Public International Law will be another focus of the conference, exploring legal and ethical implications of AI for global governance, trade, and security. Furthermore, there will be deliberations on the topic ‘Small States and Emerging Economies: Asia Diplomacy and Multilateralism’. This will examine the role of small states and emerging economies in Asia’s legal and diplomatic landscape, including international dispute resolution, economic partnerships, and regional stability. “We look forward to having our friends from or those interested in Asia here in Doha to engage in conversation and debate about the future of international law. We will do so in a vibrant, welcoming country that prioritises education and harmonises tradition with modernity. Qatar’s rich Arab culture, renowned hospitality and vibrant art scene await you,” added Dr Karamanian.

Qatar University (QU) is fully prepared to welcome students for the Fall 2026 semester, with academic, administrative and support services in place to ensure a smooth start and support students' academic success and university experience, Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Mohammed Diab said. Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr. Diab said the university currently has 30,000 students enrolled, with the number expected to rise as admission and registration for the Fall 2026 semester are completed. He said the university, its colleges and its administrative and support units are ready for the start of the new academic year. Dr. Diab said student success and empowerment are among the university's top priorities, backed by a comprehensive range of academic, psychological and social support services. These include academic advising, student counseling, learning support and career development programs designed to strengthen students' skills and prepare them for academic and professional success.  He also outlined efforts to enhance the university's academic programs and align them with the evolving needs of the labor market, alongside preparations covering student services and facilities, as well as activities and programs tailored to new students. As part of those preparations, classrooms, laboratories and other facilities have been equipped with the latest technologies, Dr. Diab said. Staff have also finalized class schedules and ensured that facilities are ready to support teaching and learning and provide a conducive environment for students. He said all colleges and administrative and support units are ready for a smooth start to the semester, with particular attention to new students. Academic registration is available through the university's website, he added, urging students to consult their academic advisors and choose their courses carefully to stay on track in their studies.The university is also placing particular emphasis on helping new students settle into university life through "Hayyakum - Fall 2026," an orientation event designed to familiarize them with academic and administrative services, university regulations and available resources, Dr. Diab said. The event is intended to help students make a confident start to university life. He said the event brings together various university support and service units under one roof, allowing students to meet academic advisors and learn about available services. It also features orientation workshops on university regulations and policies, digital platforms, academic success strategies and adapting to university life, as well as campus tours and interactive activities aimed at helping students integrate into the university community and develop a sense of belonging from the outset. Dr. Diab also highlighted Qatar University's Open Day, which gives students from public and private schools and their parents an opportunity to explore university life and learn about the academic majors and programs on offer. The event enables prospective students and their families to meet representatives of various colleges and university units and learn about available student services, helping them make informed decisions about their academic choices and gain a clearer picture of life at Qatar University. Dr. Diab stressed that student success and empowerment remain central to the university's priorities, supported by a comprehensive range of academic, psychological and social services. These include the Academic Advising Center, Student Learning Support Center and Student Counseling Center, as well as specialized centers focused on developing students' skills and preparing them for the workplace, including the Career Development Center.  Dr. Diab urged students to complete their registration, familiarize themselves with their class schedules and lecture locations ahead of the start of the semester, attend classes regularly, and take an active part in university activities to ensure a successful start to their university experience.On the university's curriculum development plans, he said QU is continuously updating its academic programs to meet the needs of the Qatari labor market and support national development goals. Over the past year and during the current academic year, the university has revised its curricula and introduced specialized courses in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence and the creative industries.He said the aim is to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to meet the demands of the modern labor market, stressing that the university's mission extends beyond classroom education. It also seeks to help students make informed choices about fields of study that are in demand in Qatar and offer strong career prospects.He added that the Student Affairs sector, through its various student support centers, organizes career fairs and offers programs and training courses to help students understand the Qatari labor market and
