The organizing committee of the Doha Fencing Grand Prix 2026 has unveiled the particulars of the new edition of this tournament, slated to be held at Aspire Hall from January 23 to 25, 2026. The announcement came during a press conference held at Aspire Academy, in the presence of President of the Qatar Fencing Federation Abdullah Ali al-Ghanim, Deputy Director General of Aspire Academy Ali Salem Afifa, Director of the Championship Khalid Suwaidi, and Deputy Director of the Championship Hamad Saad al-Jassim, alongside members of the Federation. Al-Ghanim underlined that this 21st edition of the tournament is one of the largest Federation-organized Grand Prix championships. For his part, al-Jassim highlighted that this year's edition is set to witness the participation of around 433 athletes, comprising 254 men and 179 women, representing 53 countries. The lineup will be led by the top three globally ranked fencers in both categories, alongside Olympic champions, including Japan’s Koki Kano, gold medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Tokyo Olympic medalists, and Belgian fencer Naccer Layola, winner of the previous Doha Grand Prix. The competitions are expected to be highly competitive and exhilarating, he noted. Regarding Arab participation, al- noted that the championship will feature Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Kuwait, Tunisia, and the UAE. Qatar will field nine athletes, including Youssef Abdul Tawab, Mohammed Abdul Ali, Mohammed Al Hazzaa, Abdulrahman al-Jadra, and Ali al-Khalif, as well as four women, namely Fatima Al Maadid, Thikrayat al-Abdullah, Wadha al-Abdullah, and Sheikha Ali. The team prepared for the event through continental and Arab competitions, as well as domestic and international training camps, he said. The contest will also see 19 referees overseeing the competitions, including three from Qatar: Mohammed al-Tiri, Mohammed Basahal, and Bashir El Shourbaji. Al Jassim further noted the crucial role of volunteers in ensuring the success of the event, with over 150 volunteers contributing in this edition, applauding their indispensable support in organizing the competitions. He invited fans to attend the three-day Doha 2026 Fencing Grand Prix at Aspire, promising excitement and close encounters with world and Olympic champions. Afifa, for his part, expressed pride in hosting the event, noting the academy’s student participation and annual partnership with the Qatar Fencing Federation to develop players and provide full support. The championship offers $22,000 in prize money, with $11,000 each for men and women, rewarding the top three finishers in both categories. This prestigious annual tournament attracts top-ranked fencers worldwide, influencing global rankings.

Sidra Medicine will host the 10th edition of its Qatar Paediatric Emergency Medicine (QPEM 2026), international conference from Friday focusing on the realities of paediatric emergency care. “From its early years, QPEM has evolved from a teaching forum into a platform that actively supports research, quality improvement, and knowledge translation. The conference encourages participants to present original work, audits, and system-level innovations grounded in real clinical environments,” Dr Syed Huda, attending physician and education lead at Emergency Department, Sidra Medicine and the scientific committee chairman of the conference told Gulf Times. Dr Huda noted that discussions at the virtual conference taking place from January 16-18 will centre on high-risk, low-frequency emergencies such as complex paediatric airway management, trauma, sepsis and sudden cardiac or metabolic collapse. “Beyond clinical knowledge, there is strong emphasis on team leadership, human factors, patient safety and decision-making under pressure, recognising that outcomes in paediatric emergencies are shaped as much by systems and teamwork as by individual expertise. QPEM 2026 also addresses the challenges faced by rapidly growing health systems, including overcrowding, resource variability and the need for reliable resuscitation performance across multidisciplinary teams,” explained Dr Huda. According to Dr Huda, by bringing together clinicians, educators, and researchers, QPEM facilitates collaboration across institutions and disciplines, allowing ideas tested locally to be refined, evaluated, and shared regionally. “Importantly, QPEM places value on applied research work that informs practice, improves patient flow, strengthens resuscitation systems, and enhances team performance, ensuring that knowledge generated at the conference has practical impact beyond the lecture hall,” he said. The physician stated that the most significant impact of QPEM has been the development of a shared paediatric emergency care culture across the region. “Over time, the conference has helped standardise approaches to paediatric resuscitation, strengthen interprofessional collaboration, and elevate expectations around safety, leadership, and preparedness. It has contributed to workforce development by supporting trainees, fellows, nurses, and allied health professionals, while also creating a professional network that continues well beyond the conference itself.” He remarked that Sidra Medicine advances paediatric care by combining tertiary clinical services with education, research, and system leadership. “As a dedicated women’s and children’s hospital, it provides highly specialised care for complex paediatric conditions while also serving as a national referral centre. Beyond direct patient care, Sidra Medicine plays a critical role in training the paediatric and emergency workforce, developing clinical pathways, and contributing to international research collaborations. “Its model is intentionally outward-looking, sharing expertise, supporting regional capability building, and aligning care delivery with global best practices adapted to local needs,” added Dr Huda.

Qatar Museums Chairperson Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani is expected to be among the key Qatari voices at Web Summit Qatar 2026, highlighting the growing role of culture and creativity in global technology conversations as the event returns to the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre from February 1 to 4. HE Sheikha Al Mayassa’s presence signals that Web Summit Qatar continues to position itself as more than a technology conference, blending culture, creativity and innovation into the broader digital agenda. A strong investment and policy dimension is also expected, led by Invest Qatar CEO Sheikh Ali Alwaleed al-Thani. During Web Summit Qatar 2025, Invest Qatar participated in sessions and side events that promoted Qatar as a destination for global startups and investors. In 2026, Sheikh Ali Alwaleed is likely to expound on Qatar’s investment climate, venture capital opportunities across the GCC, and the mechanisms supporting startup funding and scale-up from Qatar into international markets. Local founders who featured in the previous edition are also set to return to the stage, including Snoonu founder and CEO Hamad al-Hajri. He figured among the most closely watched Qatari entrepreneurs in 2025, when homegrown platforms were highlighted as proof of the country’s fast-maturing startup ecosystem. Urban Point CEO Saif Qazi and Skipcash founder Mohammed al-Delaimi are expected to share insights from the digital services and fintech sectors. In 2025, panels featuring local founders focused on customer acquisition, regulation and regional expansion. Abdulaziz Bin Nasser Bin Mubarak al-Khalifa, secretary general of the National Planning Council; and Mohammed Abdulsalam al-Emadi, executive director of Investment and Incubation at Qatar Development Bank will also headline the speakers. Both institutions were actively engaged in Web Summit Qatar 2025, where discussions centred on economic diversification, incubation programmes and public–private collaboration. With expertise in talent development and innovation education, Khalifa Alyafei, CEO of the Qatar Finance and Business Academy; and Sylia Khecheni, head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Doha for Science and Technology, are likely to revisit skills development, entrepreneurship training, and the role of academia in feeding the startup ecosystem, topics that gained momentum during last year’s summit. From the corporate and public-sector side, Najla Ibrahim al-Mutawa, executive vice president of Strategy and Business Development at QNB Group; and Eman al-Kuwari, director of Digital Innovation at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, are expected to speak on digital transformation, corporate innovation and the government’s role in enabling emerging technologies. Adding a creator-economy dimension is Haneen Alsaify, a content creator, chemical engineer and entrepreneur, reflecting Web Summit Qatar’s continued expansion into digital influence and online entrepreneurship, an area that attracted strong engagement during the 2025 edition. The third edition of Web Summit Qatar is witnessing a strong demand for participation and expected to attract around 30,000 participants from over 120 countries, organisers said.
