Madonna, Shakira and K-pop megastars BTS will headline a Super Bowl-style half-time show at the World Cup final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, FIFA said. Coldplay's Chris Martin is curating the show, which is a first for a football World Cup final but has raised concerns about how long half-time will be. The biggest-ever World Cup, with 48 teams, kicks off on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced in March last year that there would be "the first-ever half-time show at a FIFA World Cup final". He did not say at the time who would be performing or how long the show would last. "This will be a historic moment for the FIFA World Cup and a show befitting the biggest sporting event in the world," he said on Instagram. The move mirrors the show held during the final of the 2024 Copa America in Miami, when Colombian star Shakira performed at half-time at the Hard Rock Stadium. There was also a half-time show at last year's FIFA Club World Cup final, also at MetLife Stadium, which stretched the break in excess of the regulation 15 minutes. Infantino added that FIFA also planned to "take over" New York's Times Square on the final weekend of the World Cup. The half-time extravaganza will support FIFA's Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative working to raise $100 million for children worldwide during the World Cup. Shakira last week teased the new official song for the World Cup, releasing a brief video of the track filmed at Brazil's iconic Maracana Stadium. The singer -- who also created the 2010 World Cup anthem "Waka Waka" -- announced the song, titled "Dai Dai" in a post on her Instagram account. In the 67-second video, Shakira appears on the pitch at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, where she performed in a free concert at the city's Copacabana Beach before two million people. Holding the "Trionda", the official match ball of the 2026 World Cup, Shakira performed excerpts of the song in English, joined by dancers dressed in the colors of teams including the United States and Colombia. The song was produced with Nigerian artist Burna Boy and is set for official release on Thursday. The clip, also shared by the FIFA World Cup account, ends with the message: "We're ready!" Shakira has a long association with the World Cup, performing at the 2006 and 2014 World Cup finals in addition to producing "Waka Waka" for the 2010 tournament.

Qatar football coach Julen Lopetegui Tuesday named a 34-player preliminary squad for the FIFA World Cup to be held from June 11 to July 19.Qatar, the two-time Asian champions, will play World Cup matches against Switzerland in San Francisco on June 13, followed by games against Canada in Vancouver on June 18 and a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on June 24.The large squad that Lopetegui approved Tuesday includes the core team members who featured in their two AFC Asian Cup title wins in 2019 and 2024. Feared striker Akram Afif will be joined by veteran midfielder and captain Hasan al-Haydos, forward Moez Ali and Bassam Al Rawi. Experienced defender Pedro Miguel is also in the squad along with Mohammed Muntari who scored Qatar’s only goal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.In a surprise inclusion, veteran forward Sebastian Soria has also been named in the 34-member squad. The 42-year-old striker first appeared for Qatar at the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha. Overall, Soria has played 124 international matches for Qatar, scoring 39 goals.Meshaal Barsham - younger brother of track and field icon Mutaz Barsham - will be key to Qatar’s World Cup plans this summer. Meshaal was the Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the AFC Asian Cup which Qatar won on home soil in Feb 2024.A QFA official confirmed on Monday during the QFA Awards ceremony that the Qatar squad will train behind closed doors starting May 15 before flying out for the World Cup.  During Qatar’s training camp, two friendly matches will be played aimed at fine-tuning preparations ahead of the tournament. Qatar will face Republic of Ireland at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on May 28 before taking on El Salvador in Los Angeles on June 6. The 2026 tournament will be the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 teams and to be jointly hosted by three countries - the United States, Canada and Mexico.FIFA’s updated guidelines for the 2026 World Cup allow nations to name an initial longlist of up to 55 players, offering coaches ample room to evaluate their options before the final cut.From that pool, teams must submit a final roster of 23 to 26 players, a range that mirrors the 2022 Qatar format, which must include at least three goalkeepers.Fans and analysts can mark their calendars for June 2, the anticipated deadline for the official squad reveals. The squad: Meshaal Barsham, Mahmoud Abu Nada, Salah Zakaria, Shehab Al Laithi, Ahmed Al Janahi, Ahmed Alaa, Ahmed Fathi, Tarek Salman, Edmilson Junior, Ayoub Al Lawati, Sultan Al Brake, Al Hashmi Al Hussein, Boualem Khoukhi, Bassam Al Rawi, Jassim Jaber, Nail Mason, Sebastian Soria, Ryan Al Ali, Assim Madibo, Abdulaziz Hatem, Issa Laay, Mohammed Manai, Karim Boudiaf, Lucas Mendes, Tahseen Mohammed, Mubarak Shanan, Homam Al Amin, Youssef Abdurisag, Mohammed Muntari, Mohammed Waad, Hassan Al Haydos, Akram Afif, Almoez Ali and Pedro Miguel.

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui is expecting a tough time next January when the two-time champions arrive in Saudi Arabia to defend their AFC Asian Cup crown they won in 2019 and 2024.  On Sunday, Qatar were drawn with four-time winners Japan, Thailand and Indonesia in Group F of the 24-team tournament set to be held in Saudi Arabia from Jan 7-Feb 5 next year.  Qatar beat Japan in the final of the 2019 edition staged in the UAE for their maiden AFC Asian Cup title triumph. Five years years later on home soil, Qatar beat Jordan in the title clash of Asia's showpiece football tournament to win two back-to-back trophies under the captaincy of Hasan al-Haydos.  After the draw ceremony staged in Riyadh on Sunday, Lopetegui said: “We are optimistic but understand the qualities of our opponents and we will play in a very tough group. Japan are the main favourites, Indonesia have improved a lot, and so have Thailand. It’s going to be a tough and balanced group, now we have a lot of work to do.” Born in Asteasu, Spain, Lopetegui has enjoyed a remarkable career both on the pitch and on the sidelines. Appointed as the head coach of the Spanish national team on July 21, 2016, he managed 16 matches, securing 12 victories and 4 draws. He was named Qatar coach last year in May.  Lopetegui's next big assignment is the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be held in the US, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.  Thailand's coach Anthony Hudson said: “It’s an exciting group. It’s a good group. Obviously some big teams in there. For us, it’s a great opportunity to play against some really good opponents and anything can happen. If you want to play in the Asian Cup, it’s great to meet a team like Japan. Our opening game against Qatar is a great game. Then you look at Indonesia who are improving, there’s a huge rivalry there.” John Herdman, coach of Indonesia, said: “The expectation for Indonesia is to represent the country as the fans want to see us. They are the most passionate of fans and every time the players put on the jersey, we owe them everything we got. This tournament gives us a chance to do something special for them. Thailand are a strong team but every game in this group is huge.”

Defending champions Qatar and record winners Japan were drawn in the same group for next year's AFC Asian Cup, while hosts Saudi Arabia will meet Kuwait, Oman and Palestine.The draw for the 2027 edition of the continent's showpiece event, which runs from January 7 to February 5, took place on Saturday in Diriyah on the outskirts of Riyadh.Saudi Arabia is staging the Asian Cup for the first time as the kingdom views the tournament as a precursor to hosting the 2034 World Cup.For the third time running, the Asian Cup will feature 24 national teams, with 23 already confirmed.The sole remaining spot will go to either Lebanon or Yemen, who contest a play-off in Doha on June 4.A tie would be enough for Lebanon to qualify.At the draw, Japan were placed in Group F alongside Qatar, Thailand and Indonesia.Japan have lifted the trophy a record four times, although they have not won the tournament since 2011.Saudi Arabia and Iran each have three wins, with Qatar crowned champions for the past two tournaments, in 2019 and 2023.Last time out, the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts defeated Jordan 3-1 in the final.Both countries have qualified for this summer's global finals, with Jordan competing for the first time.On Saturday, teams were divided into four pots of six in accordance with the latest FIFA ranking as of April 1. At 18th in the official standings, Japan are the lead country in Asia, with Iran second (No. 21), South Korea third (No. 25) and Australia fourth (No. 27).Allocated first position in Pot 1, Saudi Arabia are looking to add to the three titles they won in 1984, 1988 and 1996.The opening match will be played on June 7 between Saudi Arabia and Palestine at the refurbished King Fahd Sports City Stadium, its 72,000 capacity making it the largest of the venues used.

 From a small school field in a remote village to the grandest stage of international football, Abjol Ahmed’s journey has now become an inspiring reality. The Qatar-based expatriate has been selected as a volunteer for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking a significant milestone in his life.Ahmed will serve as a hospitality volunteer at the iconic MetLife Stadium in the United States. The stadium is scheduled to host several key matches, including the final, making his role even more prestigious and memorable.This will be his second FIFA World Cup volunteering experience, having previously served successfully in an earlier edition of the tournament. His passion and long-standing commitment to volunteering have played a crucial role in reaching this remarkable stage.The upcoming World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring an expanded format with 48 teams. Out of nearly 1mn applicants worldwide, only around 65,000 volunteers have been selected — placing Abjol Ahmed among a highly competitive and elite group.His journey, however, was not easy. From the initial application and selection process to interviews, shift assignments, and visa procedures, he navigated a long and challenging path. After successfully completing all stages, he is now fully prepared for his new mission.If all goes as planned, Ahmed is expected to travel to the United States in the first week of June. His achievement is not only a personal success but also a proud moment for his home country. 

FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated that Iran will play their World Cup games in the United States as scheduled Thursday as he kicked off the global football body’s summit in Vancouver. Iran’s participation at this year’s tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States has been shrouded in uncertainty since the eruption of war in the Middle East in February following strikes by the United States and Israel. Infantino, who has repeatedly stated that Iran will be at the World Cup, underscored that stance at the start of his address to delegates in Vancouver. “Let me start by the outset, confirming straightaway that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said. “And of course, Iran will play (in) the United States of America.” Iranian officials had floated the idea of shifting their group games from the United States to Mexico, but that proposal had already been nixed by Infantino. In a further twist last week, Italy-born US special envoy Paolo Zampolli was reported to have floated the idea of Italy taking Iran’s World Cup place. The US government later distanced themselves from that proposal, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying Iran’s footballers would be welcome. But the tension surrounding Iran’s World Cup participation rumbled into the build-up to Thursday’s FIFA Congress. Iran was the only absentee from the 211-member congress as Thursday’s meeting got under way after a clash with Canadian border officials earlier this week. 

Palestinian football federation President Jibril Rajoub refused to stand alongside Israel FA Vice-President Basim Sheikh Suliman in a heated moment at the FIFA Congress on Thursday.Both men were called to the stand by ‌FIFA President Gianni Infantino but Rajoub declined to be brought closer to Arab-Israeli ​Suliman. Infantino put his hand on ‌Rajoub's arm and invited him with a gesture to come closer to ‌Suliman, but in ⁠vain.Asked what Rajoub said ‌when he refused, Palestinian FA Vice-President Susan ‌Shalabi, who was in the room, told Reuters: "I cannot shake the hand of someone the ⁠Israelis have brought to whitewash their fascism and genocide. We are suffering."Israel has denied committing genocide in Gaza. Infantino then took the stand and said: "We will work together, President Rajoub, Vice-President Suliman. Let's work together to give hope to the children. These are complex matters."Speaking after the Congress ended, Shalabi said Infantino's attempt to have Suliman and Rajoub shake hands showed little consideration for the Palestinian FA chief's speech, in ​which he made yet another plea for Israeli clubs not to base teams in the West Bank settlements. "To be put in a position where to have a handshake after everything that was said, this ‌negates the whole purpose of ⁠the speech that the ​general (Rajoub) was giving," she said."He spent like 15 minutes trying to explain ​to everyone how the rules matter, how this could easily become a precedent where the rights of member associations are violated with impudence, and then we'll just wrap this under the carpet. It was absurd."Rajoub said: "From my side, I still respect and follow the legal procedure but I think it’s time to understand that Israel should be sanctioned. The double standard policy should stop. I refused to shake hands. Sport is sport... for me that should be respected, but if the other side is representing a criminal like Bibi (Benjamin Netanyahu) and speaking on behalf of Bibi as if Bibi is Mother ‌Teresa, how can I shake hands ‌or have a photo with such ⁠a man?"I think Gianni has the right to try to bridge gaps and bring people ⁠together but I think maybe he ⁠does not understand or does not know the deep suffering of the Palestinian people."Last week, the PFA appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against FIFA's decision not to sanction Israel over clubs based in West Bank settlements. The PFA has long argued that clubs based in settlements in the West Bank - territory Palestinians seek as part of a future state - should not ​compete in leagues run by the Israel Football Association.FIFA said last month it would take no action against the IFA or Israeli clubs, citing the unresolved legal status of the West Bank under public international law. As they were leaving the Vancouver Convention Centre, Rajoub and Shalabi were targeted by protesters who were demanding that FIFA should ban Iran from the World Cup on the grounds that the team, they say, represent the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)."Does that convince you that you have to support IRGC... because you're having a problem ‌with Israel," one protester ​asked Rajoub."We're not supporting anyone, we just want the support of the international community," Rajoub said. 

Qatar will host the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in November and December, the sport’s global governing body and local organisers have announced. The tournament will take place from 19 November to 13 December in the FIFA World Cup 2022 host nation and will be contested by 48 teams, a statement by the local organising committee in Qatar said Wednesday. The prestigious youth tournament returns to Qatar, marking the second of five consecutive editions that the country will host annually through 2029. Following a landmark 2025 tournament that saw Qatar hosting the first-ever FIFA competition to feature 48 teams, this year’s edition will continue the expanded format, welcoming tomorrow’s stars to compete for the coveted trophy. The final draw scheduled for 21 May in Zurich, Switzerland. Matches will be held at the state-of-the-art Competition Complex in Aspire Zone, which will once again transform into a vibrant football hub for fans and players. The tournament’s centralised hosting concept formed the cornerstone of the fan experience in 2025, with more than 197,460 spectators in attendance across 104 matches over 15 match days. A total of 130 football scouts from leading football clubs around the world also benefitted from the venue’s compact nature, allowing them to observe talents from a single venue. With the 2025 edition serving as a launch pad for rising stars, such as Egypt’s Hamza Abdelkarim, Mali’s Seydou Dembelé,Belgium’s Jesse Bisiwu and Nathan De Cat, and Italy’s Samuele Inacio among many others, all eyes will now be on the next generation of talents at the 2026 edition. The final will be held at the renowned Khalifa International Stadium, where Portugal was crowned champions last year in front of 38,901 spectators. This year, Khalifa International Stadium marks 50 years since its inauguration in 1976. As part of its illustrious legacy, the venue has hosted several premier sporting events, including matches of the historic FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The stadium is set to host the Amir Cup Final 2026 on May 9.

FIFA has announced the release of a new allocation of tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 50 days ahead of the tournament's kick off in North America.In a statement published on its official website, FIFA said fans will be able to purchase tickets for all 104 matches through FIFA's online platform from 13:00 GMT, with sales conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.The governing body added that more than five million tickets have already been sold. While this phase is described as the final stage of ticket sales, FIFA noted that additional tickets will continue to be made available periodically until the final match on July 19.The 2026 edition of the World Cup will be the largest in the competition's history, featuring 48 teams - an expansion from the previous format of 32 nations.The tournament, jointly hosted by three countries for the first time, is expected to draw unprecedented global attendance and viewership.
