Bangladesh will not play their Twenty20 World Cup matches in India after Mustafizur Rahman was released by his Indian Premier League team amid growing tensions between the countries, Bangladesh’s ‌cricket board (BCB) said Sunday. Kolkata Knight Riders said on Saturday ‌they had released the Bangladesh ‍bowler after being told to do so by India’s cricket board (BCCI). Bangladesh are scheduled to play three Twenty20 World Cup matches in Kolkata next month, with the February 7-March 8 tournament being co-hosted by India ‍and Sri Lanka, but the BCB said they are worried about their players’ safety. “Following a thorough assessment of the prevailing situation and the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India and considering the advice from the Bangladesh government, the Board of Directors resolved that the Bangladesh national team will not travel to India for the tournament ‌under the current conditions,” the BCB said. “In light of this decision, the BCB has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC), as the event authority, to consider relocating all of ‍Bangladesh’s matches to a venue outside India.” Earlier ‌Sunday Ministry of Sports said Bangladesh would not travel to India. “We welcome this decision taken in the context of the extreme communal policy of India’s cricket board,” said Nazrul, who added that he had instructed the board to request Bangladesh’s World Cup games be held in Sri Lanka. Last month, hundreds protested near Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi after Hindu factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was beaten and set on fire in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district by a crowd that accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A total ​of 12 people were arrested ‌in connection with his death. WORSENED RELATIONSThe incident worsened relations between India and its neighbour, with ties already strained after Bangladesh’s ‍former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to New Delhi following protests against her. After Mustafizur’s release on Saturday, the BCB had held an emergency meeting before writing to the ICC to relocate their matches. “The board said that where a Bangladesh cricketer can’t play in India despite being contracted, the entire Bangladesh cricket team can’t feel ​safe to go to the World Cup,” Nazrul had said. Last year, the ICC allowed India to play Champions Trophy matches in the United Arab Emirates due to soured relations with hosts Pakistan. Sunday, cricket news site Cricbuzz reported that the BCB would ask the BCCI for a formal explanation regarding Mustafizur’s release. The ICC did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Bangladesh are due to play West Indies, England and Italy in Kolkata before ending the group stage against Nepal in Mumbai. 

Bottom-placed Al Shahania produced a stunning upset as they swept aside league leaders Al Gharafa 3-0 at Al Khor Stadium Saturday, on the resumption of the Qatar Stars League following the international break.Shahania wasted no time in making their intentions clear, taking the lead as early as the fourth minute when Mohammed Bader Sayyar found the net. The early goal rattled Gharafa, and while the leaders pushed forward in search of an equaliser, they were caught out again as Sayyar struck for a second time in the 22nd minute to give his side a commanding advantage.The underdogs maintained their control after the break and sealed a memorable victory in the 64th minute, when Lotfi Rabah Madjer added the third goal to cap a dominant performance. The win lifted Shahania’s points tally to seven, moving them up to 11th place, while Gharafa remained top of the standings on 25 points despite the defeat. Gharafa have played a game more than second-placed Al Shamal, but they also have a four point cushion at the top.Speaking after the match, Shahania goalscorer Madjer praised his team’s confidence and commitment. “We entered the match believing in ourselves, and every player delivered,” he said. “We showed that Al Shahania are a respectable team capable of competing with any side in the league.”Madjer also credited the coach’s half-time instructions for maintaining their intensity. “The coach asked us to continue with the same approach we showed in the first half, and we stuck to the plan. We hope to carry this performance forward in the coming matches.” 

The Arab League Council, at the level of permanent representatives, strongly condemned Israel’s recognition on December 26 of the secession of Somalia’s northwestern region, known as “Somaliland”, describing the move as driven by political, security and economic agendas that are categorically rejected.In a statement issued at the conclusion of an extraordinary session held at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo, convened at the request of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Council rejected any measures arising from what it described as an invalid recognition. It warned against attempts to exploit northern Somali ports for military purposes or to facilitate plans aimed at the forced displacement of the Palestinian people.The Council reaffirmed the longstanding Arab position, as enshrined in Arab League resolutions and international charters, that the northwestern region of Somalia is an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. It rejected any attempt to recognise its secession, directly or indirectly.The statement said the Israeli move formed part of broader efforts to undermine international peace and security and violate Arab national security, calling for legal, political, economic and diplomatic measures in response.The Council expressed full support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and stability, and for the Federal Government’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty on land, sea and air. It affirmed Somalia’s right to legitimate self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter and pledged support for any lawful measures Somalia may take to counter aggression.The Arab League also declared its full solidarity with Somalia’s position that any recognition of the so-called “Somaliland” is null and void, unacceptable, and a blatant violation of international law. Such actions, it said, constitute interference in Somalia’s internal affairs and risk destabilising Somalia, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Horn of Africa.The Council warned that these actions represent a dangerous attempt to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and called on the international community to confront them as a threat to regional and global peace, freedom of navigation and international trade.It also reiterated its categorical rejection of any displacement of the Palestinian people or attempts to alter the demographic composition of Palestinian territory, describing such actions as grave violations of international law. In this context, it rejected the use of Somali territory to advance such plans.The Council further opposed the use of any part of Somali territory by external actors for hostile or intelligence activities targeting other states. It called for cooperation with Somalia, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2025–2026, to secure international resolutions affirming Somalia’s unity and sovereignty and rejecting the Israeli recognition as null and void.The Arab League requested its ambassadors in major international capitals to convey the statement to relevant governments and organisations, highlighting the serious political and security implications of the move.It also urged all states and international and regional organisations to refrain from any official or semi-official dealings with the authorities of the northwestern region outside the framework of Somali sovereignty, stressing that any violation of Somalia’s territorial integrity constitutes an act of aggression under international law. 

The Arab League has called out the decision taken by the Security Cabinet of the Israeli occupation state to endorse the establishment of 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. In a statement Monday, the Arab League stressed that this move lays bare a brazen challenge to the international will that opposes the settlement and constitutes a breach of international law, confirming the illegitimacy of these settlements. The apparent expansion of this unlawful settlement is carried out with the intent of preventing the establishment of a continuous Palestinian state geographically, reflecting the nature of the Israeli government controlled by extremists and settlers, the statement concluded. The statement further emphasised that this expansion will never make settlements legitimate whatsoever, and that the violence unleashed by extremist settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank is a kind of terror practised under the eyes of the occupation state and protected by its official apparatus.

Aston Villa stepped up their unexpected Premier League title challenge as Morgan Rogers' brilliant brace sealed a 2-1 win against Manchester United Sunday.Unai Emery's side took the lead through Rogers' stunning strike late in the first half at Villa Park.Matheus Cunha levelled for United moments later but Rogers bagged his sixth goal in his last six league appearances after the interval to clinch Villa's 10th successive victory in all competitions.Unai Emery's third-placed side are just three points adrift of leaders Arsenal and one behind second-placed Manchester City as they chase a first English title since 1981.Villa are on their best winning run in all competitions since 1914, when they secured 11 successive victories.They have won seven consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since 1989-90, when they finished second under Graham Taylor.Villa's ascent into the title race is even more remarkable as it comes after their worst start to a league campaign for 28 years, featuring just two points and one goal scored in their opening five matches.Emery has turned Villa Park into a fortress, with just one Premier League home defeat in 2025, fewer than any other team.Arsenal have already lost there this season and even United, beaten just once in their previous 26 trips to Villa, were unable to derail Emery's title charge.Seventh-placed United's second defeat in their last 11 league matches left them winless in their last two games after the 4-4 draw with Bournemouth on Monday.Adding to Ruben Amorim's problems, United captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off at half-time with an apparent hamstring issue.Fernandes' injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Amorim, who was without seven players against Villa.Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Kobbie Mainoo were injured, Casemiro was suspended, while Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui are at the Africa Cup of Nations.Fernandes recently claimed United "wanted me to go" when Al-Hilal made a bid for him in the summer.Emery delightThe Portugal midfielder rejected the switch to Saudi Arabia, but United will experience what life without their influential skipper is like if Fernandes is sidelined for a prolonged spell.Benjamin Sesko should have put United in front after racing into the Villa area, but he hesitated, allowing Emiliano Martinez time to dash off his line and block the Slovenian's shot.Villa took the lead with a perfectly crafted counter-attack in the 45th minute.John McGinn's pin-point pass sent Rogers surging away down the left flank and the England midfielder glided past Leny Yoro to curl a brilliant finish into the far corner from just inside the area.Matty Cash gifted United their equaliser on the stroke of half-time, the defender dawdling in possession as Patrick Dorgu pounced to tee up Cunha for a clinical finish from an acute angle.Losing Fernandes for the second half was a hammer blow and the irrepressible Rogers restored Villa's advantage in the 57th minute.Showing more desire than Yoro, Rogers pounced on a loose ball in the United area and guided a predatory finish past Senne Lammens from 12 yards.Emery revelled in the moment, roaring in delight as he threw his jacket in the air in celebration.The Spaniard's joy was nearly curtailed immediately, but Martinez saved from Diogo Dalot and Dorgu to preserve Villa's lead.Cunha squandered an even better chance, heading wide from Dorgu's cross.Amorim sent on Jack Fletcher, the son of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, for his debut, but the teenager's first game was destined to end in defeat. 

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes told Portuguese media the Premier League club had wanted to sell him this summer after receiving interest from Saudi Arabia.But the 31-year-old claimed manager Ruben Amorim still had him in his plans and that convinced him to stay at Old Trafford."My passion and empathy for the club were the same, but there comes a point where money becomes more important to them than you," Fernandes told Canal 11, a channel owned by the Portuguese Football Federation, on Monday."The club wanted me to leave. I said it to the directors and I think they didn't have the courage to make that decision because the coach wanted me."But if I had said I wanted to leave, even if the coach wanted me to stay, the club would have let me go."Fernandes, who has 103 goals in 307 appearances for Man Utd in all competitions since arriving in 2020, was also reportedly hurt by the club hierarchy's willingness to part ways with him."The feeling I got from the club was, 'if you leave, it's not so bad for us'. That hurt me a little," he said, according to comments reported on the website of Portuguese sports daily A Bola.The playmaker said he had considered a move to Saudi Arabia, following in the footsteps of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo who made the move to the kingdom in 2023 after his acrimonious departure from Old Trafford.
