Officials, experts, and industry leaders in Tuesday's session of the ministerial programme at MWC25 Doha discussed the technologies and services provided by mobile phones, which they said currently contribute $6.5tn to the global economy by enhancing productivity and efficiency in both the private and public sectors, while enabling citizens and the broader Internet ecosystem to thrive and drive innovation.The participants, in the session titled "Unleashing Investment Through Mobile: Rethinking Regulations for Growth and Innovation", highlighted trends in mobile telecommunications investment, best regulatory and financial practices to create an environment conducive to growth and innovation, as well as balanced financial frameworks that meet economic priorities, support affordability, stimulate investment, and address digital security policies and regulations that enhance consumer confidence in digital services while ensuring their safety and security.They emphasised that investments in the mobile telecommunications sector and mobile infrastructure are essential elements for building a digital economy, particularly in the region, with the potential for the digital economy to contribute up to 10% of GDP, making investment in mobile infrastructure highly significant.For his part, Eng Khalid al-Hashimi from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) spoke about information security in the telecommunications sector and the challenges faced by service providers in implementing contemporary security measures to address the risks of related technologies.He specifically focused on the importance of applying the principle of assurance to strengthen protection against cyber risks.Dr Mani Manimohan, Head of Policy and Regulation for Digital Infrastructure at the GSMA — which is organising MWC25 Doha in partnership with MCIT — said that, for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa region, when looking across different markets in the region, one observes many areas related to the session's theme, both in fiscal and regulatory policy.He added that, on this basis, the session aims to rethink how to move away from traditional taxes and fees based on operators' revenues, as well as rigid and inflexible rules related to network deployment and service quality, and instead work on providing a regulatory and financial environment that is more equitable, reliable, and flexible, enabling operators to make the necessary investments to build the digital economy.Manimohan noted that mobile operators worldwide invest very substantial financial levels, amounting to approximately USD244bn annually, in network capital expenditures, which over the years has resulted in a remarkable success story in the mobile telecommunications sector.He noted, for various reasons, the existence of a gap between governments' ambitious digital agendas and operators' capacity to sustainably finance those investments in the future.In addition, Manimohan further highlighted that one of the key areas to encourage investment is rethinking financial and regulatory policies.He emphasised three immediate and strategic priorities, chiefly reducing taxes and fees based on operators' revenues, which in some markets reach up to 50%, making the deployment of fibre networks and transmission towers faster, easier, and more cost-effective, and moving away from overly rigid obligations related to service quality.

A top official of the GSMA has lauded Qatar’s proactive investments to push forward its digitalisation journey, underscoring the country’s role as a global leader in shaping the future of connectivity.In an exclusive interview with Gulf Times on the sidelines of MWC25 Doha, Louis Powell, Director of AI Technologies at the GSMA, said Qatar ranks among the world’s top 10 investors in the digital economy and has set clear national goals through its Digital Agenda 2030.“I understand that Qatar is in the top 10 investors in the digital economy and ecosystem. The government is very proactive on the AI side of things, and I think it’s a great opportunity for them to uplift and empower their citizens and enterprises. Establishing a clear goal and ambition through its 2030 national vision not only sends a positive signal to the economy but also sets a guiding example for other nations,” Powell pointed out.According to Powell, the connectivity industry is expected to generate “$470bn in value between now and 2030.” He said MWC25 Doha attracted about 300 thought leaders, 250 exhibitors, and 100 startups, adding that “a lot of that value is created in these two days from these players in this space.”He said MWC25 Doha brings together a “core group of investors,” making the event a vital platform for showcasing breakthroughs in mobile technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and next-generation connectivity.Powell revealed what he was most excited about the developments in AI, citing the announcement of a strategic co-operation agreement between the GSMA Foundry, the GSMA’s innovation hub, and the Abu Dhabi-based Khalifa University of Science and Technology in the UAE.“We’re working with Khalifa University on building assets that boost the telecoms industry in AI,” Powell explained, adding that the university has a strong history in telecoms and recently built the first model designed specifically for the industry“And along with them, we have done a lot of work on benchmarking how models perform in the telecoms industry,” stressed Powell, who noted that telecoms data has unique requirements compared to consumer applications.“You can’t just take ChatGPT and use it on telecom-specific data. To address this, the GSMA is working with vendors in the open-source ecosystem and academia to boost model performance,” he further said.Asked about other key announcements or initiatives the GSMA unveiled at MWC25 Doha, and how they will shape the direction of the industry in the coming years, Powell said: “We've also launched a competition encouraging the industry to innovate in the telecom space, focusing on telecom-specific challenges such as troubleshooting. We also have great announcements on our open gateway through new announcements on network APIs.”Looking ahead, Powell said 6G will be “AI native,” with intelligence embedded into how networks are designed, constructed, and operated. “In the future, we’ll see how agentic systems really give you unlocked potential in scale and efficiency,” he pointed out.

The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs honoured on Tuesday the winners of the top five places for males in the three categories (citizens, elite memorisers, general memorisers) in the full Holy Qur'an catergory of the 30th Sheikh Jassim bin Muhammad bin Thani Noble Qur'an Competition, at a ceremony held at the Sheraton Doha Hotel.The ceremony was attended by His Excellency the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Ghanem bin Shaheen al-Ghanem, a group of scholars, preachers and reciters, a number of officials from state institutions and its scientific and educational sectors, and a group of state guests, including: His Excellency Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Moscow International Holy Qur'an Competition Shaikh Dr. Rushan Abbyasov, Grand Mufti of Slovenia Shaikh Nevzet Poric, Grand Mufti of Croatia Shaikh Aziz Hasanovic.On this occasion, chairperson of the competition's organising committee, Malallah Abdulrahman al-Jaber, said that the competition represents one of the most prominent Qur'anic platforms in the Islamic world, thanks to the continuous support and care of the wise leadership, and the great interest of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs. He noted that the competition, which was launched for the first time in 1993, has established its presence during the past three decades as one of the oldest Qur'anic competitions, the most diverse in branches, and the highest in terms of the value of the prizes.HE the Minister of Endowments honoured members of the Supreme Judging Committee, the winners, and the media organisations that covered the event.The top five winners in the citizens' category for full Quran memorisation were Abdulaziz Abdullah Ali al-Hamri securing first place and a prize of QR100,000. Ibrahim Mohammed Hashem al-Mashhadani came in second with an QR85,000 prize, followed by Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrahim al-Haram in third place with QR70,000.Mohammed Abdullah Mohammed Buleidah received the fourth-place award of QR60,000, while Hamad Abdullah Tayis al-Jumaili came fifth with QR50,000.In the elite memorisers' category for full Quran memorisation, the United States' Hamza al-Habashi claimed first place with a prize of QR100,000.Yemen's Mohammed Abdu Ahmed Qasim took second place with QR85,000, and Tunisia's Rasheed Abdulrahman al-Alani finished third with a QR70,000 award.The fourth-place prize of QR60,000 went to Mahmoud Suleiman al-Mabruk Idris from Libya, while Egyptian contestant Magdy Abdullah Salem Ahmed earned the fifth-place prize of QR50,000.In the general memorizers' category, Nasser Nahed Deeb from the US achieved first place with a QR100,000 award.Khalid Hafiz Mohammed Fakhrul Huda from Bangladesh followed in second with QR85,000, and his compatriot Saad Abdul-Sattar Abu Saeed secured third place with QR70,000.Abdulaziz Fahad Mohammed al-Hawsali from Yemen placed fourth with QR60,000, while Bangladesh's Ismail Hafiz Mohammed Elias finished fifth with a QR50,000 prize.Al Jaber indicated that the launch of the competition came in commemoration of the approach of the founder of the state, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani and his keenness to spread knowledge and enhance the status of the Holy Quran among members of society. He explained that the closing ceremony comes as a culmination of the efforts of hundreds of participants from citizens and residents in various branches, from memorizing the entire Holy Quran, to the branches of partial memorization, which witnessed this year a wide participation of male and female students.He noted that the number of applicants in the current edition exceeded 2,450 male and female contestants, including about 800 participants from citizens. He pointed out that the competition witnessed this year a number of administrative and organizational amendments, including the complete separation of the male and female judging committees, in addition to allocating five independent centers for the winning female contestants in the three categories with the same value of the prizes allocated to men, in addition to increasing the value of the rewards allocated to the skilled male and female contestants who did not obtain one of the five winning positions in the competition.He added that the 29th edition also witnessed the launch of the "Rattel Branch" dedicated to male and female high school students in public and private schools, which was held in October with the aim of promoting love for the Holy Quran and consolidating moral and religious values ​​in the hearts of students.Al Jaber emphasized that the competition is witnessing increasing global expansion, as the organizing committee contributed during the current year to supporting a number of Quranic competitions outside the country, including the Russian Federation's Holy Quran Competition, the European International Competition in Croatia, and the Holy Quran Competition in Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the framework of the State of Qatar's role in s Invest Qatar, the Investment Promotion Agency of Qatar, and the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) Monday entered into a strategic partnership aimed at deepening economic and investment co-operation between Qatar and Poland.This collaboration, formalised during the Poland-Qatar Investment Forum hosted by the Embassy of Poland in Doha, reflects a shared commitment to promoting mutual interests and unlocking new opportunities for businesses in both countries.The strategic partnership establishes the framework for exchanging information and data between both parties to support and strengthen investment flows between Qatar and Poland.Under the agreement, Invest Qatar will provide Polish companies with comprehensive support, including insights into Qatar’s business and regulatory landscape, guidance on investment opportunities, assistance with business setup and introductions to key stakeholders. The agency will also offer aftercare services to Polish firms already operating in Qatar, ensuring a seamless experience for new and existing investors.PAIH will support Invest Qatar in promoting business opportunities in Qatar to Polish companies, as well as refer interested investors looking to enter the market. Additionally, PAIH and Invest Qatar will collaborate to participate in joint events, workshops and conferences aimed at strengthening business exchange and bilateral investment between Qatar and Poland."This partnership with PAIH marks a new chapter in the long-standing relationship between Qatar and Poland that has been built on mutual respect, shared values and a commitment to progress. Through this collaboration, we aim to open new avenues for economic growth, support Polish companies to explore the wealth of opportunities available in Qatar and foster meaningful partnerships that drive innovation and long-term growth,” said Sheikh Ali Alwaleed al-Thani, chief executive officer, Invest Qatar.Łukasz Gwiazdowski, deputy chairman of PAIH, said it is pleased to join forces with Invest Qatar to support Polish companies in expanding their global footprint."This collaboration will not only facilitate access to new markets but also foster significant connections between our business communities. We look forward to working together to drive investment and create lasting value for both economies,” he added.This collaboration aligns with Invest Qatar’s commitment to position Qatar as a reliable long-term strategic partner to nations and businesses around the world while supporting its national economic diversification objectives. It also reaffirms the close and historic ties between Qatar and Poland, with diplomatic relations being established over 35 years ago.This is exemplified by the significant trade and commercial ties between the two countries, with trade reaching approximately QR4.2bn in 2024, and the presence of over 35 Polish companies operating across a variety of sectors in Qatar, including professional services, logistics and technology.
