India score 211-6 against Pakistan in Asian Games cricket final

India scored a mammoth 211-6 in their 20 overs after choosing to bat against Pakistan in the fierce rivals' blockbuster Asian Games gold medal match in Nagoya on Saturday. Abhishek Sharma pummelled a 20-ball fifty on his way to 61 in a whirlwind start to the innings in front of a compact, but raucous, crowd at the Korogi Athletic Park Stadium, a converted baseball field. India brought their 100 up off just 55 balls before Pakistan's bowlers regained some control after dismissing the in-form Ishan Kishan for 20 and captain Shreyas Iyer for 21. But Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube unleashed a late onslaught, putting on 62 in five overs for the sixth wicket as India recorded the highest score of the tournament so far, easily eclipsing their 169-7 against Sri Lanka in the semi-final.

Tom Kim finishes marathon Asian Games second round under floodlights

Tom Kim probably didn't have floodlit golf on his Asian Games to-do list in Nagoya this week, but that is exactly what he ended up playing at the end of a marathon second round on Thursday.Presidents Cup player Kim, defending gold medallist Taichi Kho from Hong Kong and Japan's Keita Nakajima teed off in the final men's group at 12:35pm. Play slowed to a crawl as soft fairways meant players could lift and clean their balls on every shot, while others in groups ahead were getting into trouble and causing further hold-ups on the tight tree-lined Kasugai Country Club course. The final group's round took a mammoth five hours and 20 minutes to complete, taking them past the local sunset at 5:38 pm. It forced some drastic action from organisers to get the round finished, with temporary floodlights brought in alongside the final green so the trio could still putt out in almost total darkness.Kim tapped in for a par four with the help of the electric candlepower to complete a round of four-under 66 to stand in a share of fifth place with South Korean teammate Mun Do-yeob on seven-under par. Nakajima rolled in a birdie three at the last for a 66 of his own and enjoyed the unusual finish, saying it might have even brought him a little good fortune."It was fun," said Nakajima. "I made a good birdie. I had no birdies on the back nine until then." Wang Wei-hsuan of Taiwan (66) and Deng Wenyi of China (64) share the halfway lead at nine-under par.Japan pair Nakajima and Kazuki Higa (67) are joint third on eight-under. Hong Kong's Kho could only shoot an even-par 70 and is on one-under as his dream of back-to-back golds begins to fade. Singapore's Shannon Tan continues to lead the women's event and is on 13-under par after a six-under 64 added her to her opening round 63.She is two clear of former world number one Yin Ruoning of China and South Korea's Yang Yun-seo.

Sidra introduces 2 specialised therapies for children with high-risk neuroblastoma

To close Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September, Sidra Medicine has marked two significant milestones in paediatric cancer care, following the introduction of two specialised therapies for children with high-risk neuroblastoma.  Sidra Medicine’s Pediatric Haematology, Oncology and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) teams have successfully administered naxitamab (Danyelza) for the first time in the GCC, followed by dinutuximab beta (Qarziba) for the first time in Qatar. Both are anti-GD2 monoclonal antibody therapies and are used in the treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma.  Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that develops in a child’s nerve tissue – the sympathetic nervous system. The cancer affects babies and young children and almost always develops before the age of 5.  Dr Chiara Cugno, Acting Division Chief of Pediatric Haematology and Oncology at Sidra Medicine, said: “The introduction of these complex therapies involved extensive preparation and collaboration across Sidra Medicine’s medical, surgical, nursing, pharmacy, education and wider multidisciplinary teams. This is also a testament to our commitment to continually advance paediatric cancer treatment and care as well as expanding access to specialised therapies for children and families in Qatar.”  The therapies were administered to two patients following stem cell transplantation, marking an important advancement in the specialised treatment options available to children with cancer at Sidra Medicine.  Issa, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at birth, was our first patient in Qatar and the first patient in the GCC to receive naxitamab (Danyelza). The new specialised therapy was part of his treatment regimen at Sidra Medicine, which included a combination of chemotherapy and autologous transplantation.  Issa’s father said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better team to care for Issa, at a hospital that delivers care of the highest international standards. Thanks to the support we received, we were in turn able to support and celebrate every step and milestone of Issa’s journey as a family.”  Issa’s father’s advice to other parents: “This journey can be long and very difficult. For us, optimism was an important part of going through it. A smile and emotional support for your child are essential for every stage of their treatment. For every parent facing a childhood cancer diagnosis, may Issa’s story give you hope and reassurance for each step and every milestone.”

UN warns against escalating threats of nuclear capabilities

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the world is going through the "most dangerous nuclear moment since the end of the Cold War," with nuclear arsenals undergoing expansions and modernizations and advances in technology increasing the odds of mistake and miscalculation.The statements of the UN Secretary-General came during the plenary meeting of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, in New York.The meeting aims to raise awareness of the threat posed by nuclear weapons and to contribute to mobilizing efforts to establish a world free of such weapons.Guterres expressed his concerns regarding the expiration of the New START Treaty earlier this year, as well as the inability of the eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to reach consensus on a substantive outcome."Just when they are most needed, the safeguards built over decades to contain these dangers are breaking down," the UN chief said.He noted that the United Nations Disarmament Commission once again completed its three-year cycle without substantive recommendations."These are not simply diplomatic disappointments - they are warning signals. And the lights are flashing red. Rising risks and crumbling guardrails are a one-way ticket to disaster," Guterres stressed.He urged the United States and the Russian Federation to negotiate a successor framework to New START, stressing that it is beyond time to bring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty into force."Humanity has lived under the nuclear shadow for more than eight decades. We must ensure that future generations do not. Let’s choose a future free from nuclear weapons," he said.For his part, General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman said the global stockpile has reached more than 12,000 nuclear warheads, compared with a peak of about 70,000 warheads in 1986.He stressed that particularly alarming is that between 2,100 and 2,200 nuclear warheads are placed on high operational alert on ballistic missiles, capable of being launched at extremely short notice, adding that for the first time since the end of the Cold War, the global nuclear stockpile is expected to grow again, as new and more advanced warheads enter arsenals faster than retired ones are dismantled.He noted that since Feb. 5, 2026, the New START Treaty has expired without a new treaty, warning that "for the first time since 1972, there are no binding limits imposed on strategic nuclear arsenals."
