The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change announced the launch of a new digital service for the safe disposal of electronic waste through its official website. This comes as a part of the ministry's efforts to enhance the digital transformation of its environmental services provided to the public.In a statement released Thursday, the ministry explained that the service allows individuals to submit requests for the disposal of electronic waste through the ministry’s website, in cooperation with licensed national companies that receive, transport and handle the waste in accordance with approved environmental requirements. The service is accessed by submitting an electronic request and specifying the type of waste and its location, after which coordination will be made with the competent authority to collect and transport in a safe manner. This ensures that this type of waste is isolated from other wastes and treated in an effective and safe manner. Director of the Industrial Inspection and Pollution Control Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Mohammad Ayed Al Shammari confirmed that the digital service for the safe disposal of electronic waste through the ministry’s website represents a step within a broader national path to develop waste management, moving it from traditional methods to a more organized and efficient system based on employing digital solutions, increasing community participation, and strengthening partnership with the private sector.Dr. Al Shammari said that electronic waste has become an important environmental issue, in light of the expansion in the use of electrical and electronic devices and the accelerating pace of their replacement. This calls for the development of practical solutions that help in collecting, sorting and directing them to approved routes, instead of remaining in homes or being disposed of improperly.He added that this service reflects the ministry’s keenness to transform environmental awareness into an easy daily practice, through the contribution of community members to protecting the environment via the ministry’s website. He pointed out that the success of modern environmental initiatives does not depend on the efforts of the government sector alone, but on the integration of the roles of individuals and all parties.He explained that launching this service represents an important step towards regulating the handling of this type of waste, and facilitating access for members of society to a safe and approved mechanism for disposing of unused electrical and electronic devices. Dr. Al Shammari stressed that electronic waste requires special management, given that it may contain hazardous materials, such as heavy metals, batteries, and some components that may affect the environment and human health if disposed of improperly.He pointed out that the digital service allows users to submit a request for electronic waste collection by entering the required data and specifying the type of devices and their location on the ministry's website. Then coordination will be made with licensed national companies to receive, transport and handle them in accordance with approved environmental regulations.Dr. Al Shammari stated that the ministry is proceeding with the implementation of quality initiatives that contribute to establishing a culture of sustainability and reducing reliance on traditional waste disposal methods, in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, and supporting the state’s efforts to protect the environment and preserve its resources for future generations.

 The 35th edition of the Doha International Book Fair is set to open today at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, with organisers describing it as the largest in the event’s history. The fair, organised by Qatar’s Ministry of Culture, will run until May 23 and feature broad participation from embassies, ministries and cultural institutions from across the Arab world and beyond, reflecting the exhibition’s growing regional and international standing. This year’s edition will include 910 exhibition booths and more than 1.85mn books covering around 231,000 titles. Organisers said 143 new books would be launched during the event, alongside 46 panel discussions, 69 workshops and 46 seminars on the fair’s main stage. In comments to Qatar News Agency, Jassim Ahmed al-Buainain, Director of the Libraries Department at the Ministry of Culture and Director of the Doha International Book Fair, said the event would host 520 publishing houses from 37 Arab and foreign countries. He added that the programme would include a wide range of cultural activities, including lectures, literary discussions and workshops across various fields. The fair will also announce the winners of the second Doha International Book Fair Award, which includes six categories aimed at supporting Qatari and international authors and publishers. A cultural programme on the fair’s main stage will bring together writers, intellectuals and academics from Qatar and abroad for discussions on literature and thought, while the cultural salon will host book signings and dialogue sessions with authors.Al-Buainain said the event would also feature “Reading Guide” sessions to help visitors choose books, as well as a dedicated “Doha Children’s Zone” with interactive activities and performances for young audiences. The Qatari Authors Forum, affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, will organise a series of cultural, educational and intellectual events involving writers, researchers and academics from inside and outside Qatar. More than 100 new publications by Qatari authors and residents will be launched during the fair, alongside over 25 intellectual seminars, 15 specialist lectures and 12 discussion sessions focusing on cultural and social issues.The exhibition will open daily from 9am to 10pm local time, except on Fridays when visitors will be admitted from 3pm until 10pm. Organisers said special attention had been given to children and young readers ahead of this year’s edition, including the launch of a mobile library bus that visited around 12 schools to encourage reading and learning among students. The Doha International Book Fair is regarded as one of the oldest and largest book fairs in the region. First launched in 1972 under the supervision of Qatar’s national library authority, it was initially held every two years before becoming an annual event in 2002. Since 2010, the fair has hosted a guest country each year, including the United States, Turkiye, Iran, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, France, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Palestine.

The Qatar Sports for All Federation, under the Ministry of Sports and Youth, will stage the third edition of the global half marathon "One Run for All" on May 24 at Lusail International Circuit, drawing more than 2,500 runners across all ages and categories, including men, women, children and senior citizens.Addressing a press conference, Executive Director of the Qatar Sports for All Federation Abdullah al-Dosari outlined details of the race, now in its third year in Qatar. He said Doha was once again gearing up to host one of the world's biggest half marathons, run simultaneously in over 110 countries with more than 200,000 participants worldwide, 160,000 of them from Russia and 40,000 from other nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, China, Brazil, Serbia, Cameroon and Armenia.Al-Dosari said this year's event would feature six race categories, with the introduction of a 400m race for children and a 2.5km course designed to broaden participation and encourage families to run alongside their children. The programme will also include 1km, 5km, 10km and 21.1km races.He said the event promised an enjoyable evening for running enthusiasts, with entertainment activities at the fan zone kicking off at 4.30pm and the races starting at 9pm. All races are due to wrap up by 10pm.The executive director said race day would be a memorable occasion for participants and their families and friends, as in previous editions.

The Minister of Commerce and Industry His Excellency Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal al-Thani held a meeting Tuesday with Dr Sultan bin Ahmed al-Jaber, the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the UAE, who is currently visiting the country. During the meeting, they reviewed the cooperation relations between the two countries in the industrial and investment fields, and explored ways to enhance and develop them, in addition to discussing a number of topics of mutual interest. 

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has announced revised school hours at government institutions, taking effect from Sunday, May 3, until June 3. Under the temporary timetable, the school day will begin at 7am across all levels.  Dismissal times will vary by stage: kindergartens will close at 12:00, primary schools at 12:30pm, and preparatory and secondary schools at 12:45pm on most days of the week.  In a statement, the ministry said the adjustment is designed to better align the school day with seasonal weather conditions as temperatures rise across the country. It added that the change will not affect the number of teaching periods, ensuring academic requirements remain unchanged.  Administrative and teaching staff will follow a slightly extended schedule, working from 7am to 1:15pm to maintain the smooth running of schools and continuity of learning.  The revised timetable comes as students prepare for end-of-term examinations, which are scheduled to begin on June 4, in line with the official academic calendar for the 2025-2026 school year. Authorities said the measure forms part of broader efforts to safeguard student wellbeing while maintaining educational standards during the hotter months.
