Air transport safety stands to gain from enhanced cross-sector co-ordination as major international aviation bodies join forces to tackle one of the industry’s most persistent operational hazards. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), and Airports Council International (ACI) have launched a joint runway safety initiative aimed at reducing the risk of runway incursions across global aerodromes. A runway incursion occurs when an aircraft, vehicle, or individual is incorrectly present on a runway or within its protected perimeter. Documented annually in IATA safety reports, these incidents have previously resulted in severe and fatal accidents, making prevention a priority that requires synchronised action among airlines, airport operators, air navigation service providers, regulators, and frontline staff. The joint initiative targets three primary operational areas: improving safety reporting and data collection on incidents, near misses, and frontline observations; strengthening Local Runway Safety Teams to evaluate risks and execute co-ordinated actions; and sharing progress and operational lessons so effective practices can be implemented at airports with similar operating conditions. Nick Careen, IATA’s senior vice president for Operations, Safety, and Security, emphasised the necessity of continuous vigilance across all operational tiers. “Flying is the safest form of long-distance travel. Maintaining that record requires a relentless focus on continuous improvement, supported by global standards, safety data and collaboration. This initiative brings airlines, airports and air navigation service providers together to identify runway risks earlier and take co-ordinated action,” Careen said. The project builds upon established international frameworks, including the Global Action Plan for the Prevention of Runway Incursions (GAPPRI)—developed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), EUROCONTROL, and the Flight Safety Foundation, as well as the ICAO Global Runway Safety Action Plan. To advance these objectives, the initiative deploys practical tools and resources created by the three association partners. These include risk-assessment frameworks, specialised checklists, and implementation kits designed to support Local Runway Safety Teams. Specific components feature ACI’s Runway Safety Team Implementation Package under its Airport Excellence (APEX) in Safety programme, a joint ACI-CANSO Runway Safety Checklist, IATA’s Runway Incursion Safety Risk Assessment tool, the GAPPRI gap analysis tool for carriers, and airline risk-management evaluations conducted through the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) programme. Highlighting the critical role of air traffic management, Andrea Sack, senior vice president for Global Operations at CANSO, pointed to joint decision-making as the primary line of defence. “Runway safety depends on clear communication and co-ordinated decisions across the airport environment. Strong Local Runway Safety Teams bring controllers, airports, airlines and other operational partners together to identify risks and agree on practical actions,” Sack said. Darryl Dowd, Vice-President of Safety, Security and Operations at ACI World, noted that airports serve as the central point where all operational elements intersect.

For commuters stepping out of an air-conditioned Metro station into Qatar’s summer heat, the most difficult part of the journey can sometimes be the shortest: the final few hundred metres on foot. As Doha expands its public transport, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, Qatar’s intense summer climate is placing greater focus on how routes connecting Metro stations, bus stops and other transport hubs to people’s destinations can be made more comfortable and accessible. The issue is already recognised in Qatar’s official planning framework. The Doha Municipality Vision and Development Strategy, developed under the Qatar National Master Plan, calls for a “network of shaded routes” connecting key facilities and transit stops to enhance thermal comfort for pedestrians and cyclists. The policy highlights an increasingly important consideration for cities in hot climates: shade is not simply an amenity or architectural feature, but an important part of making streets and public spaces more usable during periods of intense heat. For Qatar residents, the difference between shaded and exposed routes becomes particularly noticeable during summer, when daily routines often shift indoors or towards the cooler hours of early morning and evening. “Shaded areas help a lot during summer. But sometimes we have to wait several minutes for buses, so I hope more will be built for commuters,” Doha resident Ramil R told Gulf Times, adding that tall buildings and the canopy of trees also provide useful protection from direct sunlight. A frequent Metro commuter, he finds public transport practical, particularly as stations provide welcome relief from the heat. Online discussions and expatriate guides also frequently advise residents to use the Doha Metro and covered walkways during summer to minimise prolonged exposure to the sun. Discussions about daily commuting similarly highlight the extent to which everyday movement in Qatar relies on transitions between air-conditioned cars, Metro stations, buses and buildings. “Getting around Doha by public transport at this time of year can be challenging for many, but I think it is always better to plan ahead before leaving the house,” said Aristotle, another Doha resident who enjoys going out with his classmates during summer. A passenger, for example, may travel comfortably across Doha on the Metro only to face an exposed walk between the station exit and an office, home, shop or other destination. This final stretch presents a challenge for public transport in a hot-climate city. “We visit and hop from one mall to another via the Doha Metro, and it’s fun, and we don’t have to wait for the cold months to do this,” Aristotle said. “There are several ways to avoid direct sunlight, and I think being exposed for a few minutes is manageable.” Qatar’s planning framework has long recognised the importance of connecting public transport with pedestrian-friendly routes. A similar policy to Doha’s appears in the Al Rayyan and Al Shahhaniya Municipality Vision and Development Strategy, which also calls for shaded routes linking key facilities and transit stops. Several developments across Qatar demonstrate different approaches to addressing outdoor thermal comfort. At Msheireb Downtown Doha, climate-responsive design is integrated into the masterplan. According to Msheireb Properties, buildings and streets were designed to increase shading, reduce direct solar exposure and incorporate principles drawn from traditional Qatari architecture. Rather than treating individual buildings in isolation, the district uses the relationship between buildings, streets and public spaces to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment while providing greater protection from the sun. At Ras Bufontas Free Zone, Qatar Free Zones Authority has also incorporated climate-responsive features into pedestrian planning. The authority says pedestrian and cycling networks connect key facilities, while ample shading and specific street orientations help improve airflow and outdoor thermal comfort. Other locations have gone further by introducing mechanical cooling. At Al Gharrafa Park, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) installed an integrated cooling and air-conditioning system serving pedestrian and jogging tracks. According to Ashghal, the system is designed to maintain temperatures along the tracks at around 26C to 28C, with trees and climbing plants helping to retain cooler air. Similar temperature-controlled outdoor facilities have provided residents with more opportunities to remain physically active during the hottest months. A 2025 Xinhua report on Qatar’s adaptation to extreme summer heat highlighted the use of cooled and shaded outdoor walking facilities at Umm Al Seneem Park, where residents were able to exercise outdoors despite high temperatures. Other destinations across Qatar also offer cooled, air-conditioned or climate-controlled outdoor spaces where residents and visitors can stroll more comfortably during the summer, even during the daytime. This includes Oxygen Park at Education City, Souq Waqif’s Eastern Square, Centro at Rawdat Al Hamama, Crystal Walk at Gewan Island (Qatar’s longest climatised outdoor pedestrian walkway), 21 High St at Katara, Al Hazm Mall and West Walk in Al Waab. 

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced on Monday that maritime navigation activities for all types of maritime vessels and ships can now resume normally within the marine range of nearly seven nautical miles.In its circular, the Ministry pointed out that this takes effect immediately and applies from Lusail City, including its ports, anchorages and marine facilities, to Hamad Port in the east, and from Umm Heesh area to Doha Salwa in the west.It added that the vessels subject to the provisions of the international maritime conventions, and which operate as per the regulations and procedures in place, are exempted.The MOT urged all to carefully follow the regulations and instructions in place and to ensure that all safety and security equipment is on board before and during sailing to ensure the safety and security of all trips.

US diesel futures jump 11% to $154 a barrel on Wednesday after ban's announcementEuropean gasoil futures hit record $60.77-a-barrel premium to BrentGlobal shortages worsened by post-Covid demand growth and Western refinery closuresEurope may face tighter competition as former Russian buyers seek alternative cargoesRussia's decision to ban diesel exports this week ​has roiled global energy markets, exacerbating ‌shortages of the industrial fuel and sending prices soaring, even in countries that no ‌longer buy the ⁠fuel from Moscow.Diesel accounts for ‌the largest share of global oil consumption, and ‌soaring prices can ripple through the global economy given its wide range of uses, from industrial machinery and ⁠farm equipment to heavy transport and electricity generation.Supply has remained tight for years due to strong post-pandemic demand and output reductions that accompanied refinery closures in the West. The Iran war has further strained the market.Russia is the world's second-largest diesel exporter after the US, and refinery outages there can significantly affect global supplies of fuels. Its exports were already slowing prior to the ban due to domestic shortages left by Ukrainian drone attacks.Diesel and gasoil loadings from Russia were just 234,000 barrels per day ​from July 1 to 10, according to Kpler, down from 400,000 bpd in June and the 2025 average around 817,000 bpd.Adding to pressure on diesel supply was a fresh wave of US attacks on Iran just hours ‌after Russia announced the export ban on ⁠Wednesday, reviving concerns ​around vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz and the toll it has taken ​on Middle Eastern exports.US government data, also released on Wednesday, showed an inventory draw of more than 4.5mn barrels of diesel last week to 97.8mn as of July 3, or 6% below the five-year average."Headlines from the Gulf combined with a Russian cessation of exports and a stunning (US Energy Information Administration) report to flush distillate sellers out of the market," Gulf Oil adviser Tom Kloza wrote to clients on Thursday.The US and Europe no longer import fuel from Russia, due to its invasion of Ukraine, but Moscow's export ban nevertheless sent prices for diesel surging in both regions, highlighting the globally interconnected nature of oil markets.US ‌ultra-low sulphur diesel futures surged 11% ‌on Wednesday to $154 a barrel, or an $80 per ⁠barrel premium to WTI crude.European low-sulphur gasoil futures, meanwhile, hit an all-time high premium to Brent crude ⁠futures of $60.77 a barrel on Wednesday.A loss of ⁠Russian exports leaves less supply available globally, forcing regular customers such as Brazil and Turkey to compete with European nations and other importers for US cargoes. This could create knock-on effects for power and agriculture sectors.If Turkey kept its own production to itself for domestic use, that would cut off a source of diesel used to generate power in the Mediterranean during the summer peak in demand, Vortexa analyst Mick Strautmann said.The ​rise in diesel prices also means that farmers' costs could rise ahead of the Southern Hemisphere's planting season and the Northern Hemisphere's harvest, with Brazilian and US Midwestern farmers competing for the same supplies."The US became the go-to diesel supplier for the EU/Great Britain when the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted, but every barrel it now redirects to Latin America is a barrel not going to Europe," said Qilin Tam, consultancy FGE NexantECA's head of refining. "And it's happening with US and ARA diesel inventories already well below the historical range for this time of year."Renewed tensions in the Middle East also mean that China's relaxation ‌of fuel export bans in ​July is not guaranteed to continue into August, curbing potential relief from Asia, Tam added. 

Qatar has moved a step closer to putting driverless taxis on its roads after Mowasalat (Karwa) completed a successful trial of electric robotaxis under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport (MOT).Announcing the milestone Tuesday, the MOT said the robotaxis had made a round trip between the ministry's headquarters and the Old Doha Port — a run it described as the latest in a string of successes for the project, and a signal that Qatar's autonomous vehicles are edging towards a fully driverless future."This pioneering project aligns with the plans of the Autonomous Vehicles Strategy developed by the MOT, which aims to leverage advanced technology applications, incorporating the latest smart, eco-friendly systems, within the public transportation industry," said MOT Assistant Undersecretary for Land Transport Affairs Abdullah Saif al-Sulaiti.He added that the ministry's departments continue to keep pace with the best global practices in adopting smart and sustainable mobility solutions. The trials, he said, followed the highest known safety standards, with the MOT set to launch the next operational phases in collaboration with Karwa.The most striking prospect lies just ahead. According to MOT Road Affairs Department In-Charge Nayla Khaled al-Noaimi, the successful pilot shows the operating and technical systems are now ready for broader adoption of autonomous services — making the switch to a second phase highly likely. That phase, she said, aims to advance to the full running of autonomous vehicles, with no driver at the wheel, in co-ordination with the relevant authorities in Qatar.MOT Land Transport Licensing Department Director Hamad Ali al-Marri stressed that the ministry places great emphasis on providing reliable and secure services for the public, and on continuing to raise the quality of land transport services to the highest standards of innovation and sustainability.For his part, Mowasalat (Karwa) CEO Ahmed Hassan al-Obaidly said the company was working side by side with, and under the supervision of, the MOT on the vital project."At Mowasalat, we dedicated all necessary resources, including skilled personnel, workforce, vehicles, technology, and advanced software to ensure the success of this initiative across all its stages," he said. "Our goal is to deliver the service to the public with the highest standards of safety and comfort, while keeping pace with developments in the public transport sector and aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030."The groundwork has been building for nearly a year. Phase one of the project, launched in August 2025 and followed by the roll-out of a pilot commercial service through the Karwa app last December, clocked up 2,500 trips — each run autonomously under the watch of a trained safety officer (SO) seated behind the wheel.The results, the ministry said, exceeded expectations: a successful commercial operation, high passenger satisfaction, and safety rates that beat initial targets, with 94% of pilot trips completed with no human intervention.The second phase raises the stakes. It will see two autonomous robotaxis operated remotely (RO), with no safety officer on board, along three routes already tested and approved: Old Doha Port–The Gate Mall, Souq Waqif–Sheraton Doha Hotel, and MIA–West Bay.That phase will be rolled out gradually, one route at a time, with progress from one stage to the next conditional on meeting all necessary safety requirements — and only after a fully safe deployment and operation has been verified and guaranteed. 

Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) announced the suspension of Lusail Tram services from June 26 to July 5 to facilitate significant improvement works across the network. The temporary suspension of tram services is being implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Transport as part of Qatar Rail’s ongoing efforts to enhance passenger services and improve the tram network’s performance. During the service suspension period, replacement bus services will operate between Legtaifiya station and Tarfat — South station to maintain continuity of service for passengers. Additionally, the existing MetroExpress and Metrolink services, including a newly launched Metrolink route M154, will operate to cover the area. Following this work, service in at-grade sections of Tram Lusail will remain suspended, as Qatar Rail carries out comprehensive upgrades to enhance efficiency and improve customers’ journey. MetroExpress and Metrolink will continue to operate, covering this area, ensuring smooth connectivity across the network. Qatar Rail advises customers to refer to the guidance maps displayed at stations to learn about replacement bus routes, the locations of the nearest bus stops, and service frequencies, in addition to following the social media channels and contacting its call centre (105) for the latest updates. 

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the completion of all works under the seventh phase of its Western Areas Road Improvement Project, marking another step in the country's efforts to enhance transport infrastructure and connectivity.  According to the authority, the works included the development of permanent roads, construction of temporary roads, installation of traffic safety features, provision of parking facilities, and the implementation of infrastructure and landscaping improvements.  Hassan al-Naama, project engineer in the Western Areas Section of Ashghal's Roads Projects Department, said the project covered the areas of Al Sailiya, Al Gharrafa, Al Karaana, Al Nasraniya and Meseimeer.  He said that a total of 39km of roads had been upgraded, alongside the installation of around 285 street lighting poles.  The project included new pedestrian pathways, road signage and markings, as well as the construction of 587 parking spaces.  Al-Naama added that extensive infrastructure works were carried out, including the installation of surface and groundwater drainage systems, stormwater networks and sewage infrastructure, in addition to land grading and site preparation works in several locations.  In Al Sailiya, major improvements were made to Al Sailiya Road and its associated main roads, including new street lighting, traffic signals, sewage lines, stormwater drainage systems, pedestrian walkways and parking facilities.  In Al Gharrafa, Al Karaana and Al Nasraniya, the project focused on road construction and upgrades, enhancing traffic safety measures and delivering sewage and household connection networks.  Additional stormwater drainage works were also undertaken, particularly in Al Gharrafa.  A key element of the project was the construction of a new road stretching more than 15km to improve access to Al Kharaij Beach. Road network enhancements and landscaping works were also completed in Meseimeer to support a number of government institutions and public service facilities in the area.

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has digitised a further 14 maritime transport services, now available electronically through its official website and split between large-vessel transactions and seafarers' affairs.Ten of the new e-services relate to big vessels, covering ship sanitation, permanent and provisional registration, renewal of provisional registration, annual fees, extension certificate, exemption certificate, certificate of seaworthiness, the issuing of an NOL for announcing a navigational warning, and penalties record and payment.The remaining four deal with seafarers' affairs, namely the issuance, renewal, amendment and replacement of the endorsement recognising a GMDSS operator certificate. GMDSS, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, is an international safety framework mandated by the IMO under the SOLAS convention. Beneficiaries can now apply for any of these services at any time and from anywhere, saving time and effort.MoT Information Systems Department acting director Dr Ahmad Nasser al-Kuwari said automating the new package advances the ministry's wider push for digital transformation across all its services, with the aim of greater efficiency, simpler and more streamlined procedures, and a better user experience. He said this was in keeping with a strategy to modernise the transport industry in step with technological advancement and innovation, and to deliver integrated government services that are simpler and more accessible round the clock.He added that the ministry would continue automating further services to improve the user experience and the quality of life of all beneficiaries, as part of broader national efforts to raise the standard of government services for individuals and businesses, boost administrative efficiency through automation, and foster a more open government with wider participation from all parties.The MoT website already offers a range of land and maritime transport e-services that users can access and apply for at any time and from anywhere.

Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Transport, took part in the International Transport Forum (ITF) 2026 Summit held in Leipzig, Germany, on May 6-8, under the theme Financing Resilient Transport.Held this year under the presidency of Azerbaijan, the forum discussed ways to enhance the resilience of transport systems and their ability to address economic, technological, and environmental challenges.It also reviewed best practices in financing transport infrastructure projects, supporting the transition towards more sustainable and innovative transport systems.The Ministry of Transport said this participation came within the framework of strengthening partnerships and constructive dialogue, keeping pace with the latest global policies and trends in the transport sector.It also aimed to enhance co-operation with countries and international organisations, as well as hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from various countries, thereby supporting national interests and facilitating the exchange of expertise.The summit brought together transport ministers from around the world, along with representatives of international organisations, the private sector, and experts.It is considered one of the most prominent global events in the transport sector and the largest annual gathering of transport ministers and decision-makers to discuss policies and future trends and promote international co-operation.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has concluded its inspection campaigns on limousine companies and companies providing passenger transportation services via electronic applications.In its press release, the MOT said that the Q1 of 2026 campaigns were carried out in collaboration with relevant Ministry of Interior departments.The inspection campaigns detected 32 violations of the Law No. 8 of 2019 Regulating Road Transport and its Implementing Regulations issued by the Minister of Transport's Decision No. 13 of 2024.The new campaigns covered all areas across Qatar, with particular focus on business, service, and vital areas; something that reflects an expanding crackdown coverage and greater attention to crowded and high-business locations.With such campaigns, the MOT continues its law enforcement effort on the violating companies. It also urges all companies to follow the laws in place and obtain the necessary licenses to be able to do the business legally and avoid accountability.The MOT pays great attention to ensuring that passenger transportation companies follow all applicable laws and meet all safety requirements, while providing the highest quality of service.
