Al Rayyan and Al Wajba booked their places in the final of the third edition of the Al Thumama Ramadan Football Tournament at the Al Furjan Stadium in Al Thumama. In the semi-finals, Al Rayyan defeated Al Shaab 4-0 while Al Wajba secured a 3-0 win over Al Raya Medical. Al Shaab and Al Raya Medical will now meet in the third-place play-off. Al Rayyan’s run to the final gathered momentum late in the group stage. They had been sitting fourth before a crucial 3-0 win over Al Zaeem pushed them into the semi-finals, where they carried that form forward with a dominant display. The tournament, held for players aged 10 to 14, featured 13 teams split into two groups. Group A included Doha, Turki Bin Abdullah, Al Wajba, Al Zaeem, Al Rayyan and Al Thumama. Group B featured Al Dafna, Al Shaab, Al Waab, Al Raya Medical, Palestine, Al Shaqab and Al Shahaniya. Winners will receive QR7,000 along with the trophy and medals, while the runners-up will earn QR5,000. The third-place team will take home QR3,000. Individual awards will also be presented. The best player, top scorer and best goalkeeper will each receive QR500, while the best team award carries a prize of QR3,000.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Ramadan tournament got underway on Tuesday evening with men’s shooting competitions (individual and family categories) and men’s singles table tennis matches. The tournament, organised for QOC employees and their families, runs until March 5 at the Lusail International Shooting Complex, in a vibrant Ramadan atmosphere filled with unity, energy, and sporting spirit.The opening day featured shooting and table tennis competitions, along with traditional games and recreational activities for children. A range of community services were also provided by the Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan), Qatar Diabetes Association, Cyber Sports Events Center, and Naseem Medical Centre. The program included an Olympic quiz segment and the distribution of prizes to participants.In the shooting (singles) event, Khalid Nasser al-Rumaihi claimed first place, while Mohammed Ahmed al-Rumaihi finished second. In the shooting (doubles) event, the duo of Khalid Nasser al-Rumaihi and Abdulrahman al-Rumaihi secured first place, with Salem Abdulhalim and Abdulrahman Abdulhalim coming in second. Meanwhile, in the men’s table tennis singles event, Mohammed Abdulsalam captured first place, while Khalid Al-Akkad finished as runner-up.This year’s tournament includes five diverse sports: shooting, table tennis (introduced for the first time), padel, football (making its debut), and beach volleyball. The variety reflects the QOC’s commitment to expanding its sports programs and enhancing competitiveness and renewal in each edition.Football competitions will take place on March 1 and 2, featuring teams from the General Secretariat, the Shooting Federation, the Procurement and Logistics Department, the Public Relations Department, and the Sports Events Department. Beach volleyball matches will be held from March 3 and 5, with teams representing the President’s Office, Sports Events Department, Procurement and Logistics Department, Shooting Federation, Public Relations Department, and Sports Affairs Department.Mana Ahmed al-Jael, Director of the QOC Ramadan Tournament 2026, confirmed that this year’s edition includes 250 participants. He explained that the addition of table tennis and football came in response to a staff survey, allowing participants to select sports that suit their physical abilities and personal interests.He also noted that the Qatar Shooting and Archery Federation, as the host entity, will participate for the first time in football and beach volleyball competitions, after successfully hosting five previous Ramadan editions at its venues. 

Athletes from five disability categories competed in a special needs table tennis tournament at Aspire Zone this Ramadan, highlighting Qatar’s commitment to inclusive sport, safety and community empowerment.A special needs table tennis competition held at Aspire Zone, as part of the annual Ramadan Sports Festival, has drawn increased participation this year, underlining Qatar’s focus on inclusion and accessible community sport.The event, hosted by Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) in collaboration with the Qatar Paralympic Committee, brought together athletes from five disability categories: deaf, blind, sitting mobility, standing mobility and mental mobility.“We do our best to accommodate all five disabilities at the same time,” said Noha Tawfiq, senior events production member and member of the Ramadan Sports Festival Committee at AZF.Tawfiq explained that specialised adaptations are introduced to ensure accessibility for all participants. “We are using this special table for the blind that depends on the hearing where they can use their hearing ability to play and to score,” she said, noting that different formats of table tennis are designed to suit each category.The festival has been running inclusive sporting activities for more than a decade. “We have been doing this for more than 10 years. We have very special attention for the special needs community,” Tawfiq said.Addressing parental concerns, she emphasised strict safety measures. “They’re doing the sports under the supervision of Aspire Team as well as the Qatar Paralympic Committee and all the safety measures are being dealt with very, very accurately to make sure that they are safe and not only safe but happy”.Organisers say the psychological impact is equally significant, noting that “it’s a very important feeling that these people feel that they are heroes and that they win and that they are accepted by the community, just like normal individuals,” Tawfiq added.Hussain Alhaddad, member of the Federation for Special Needs and competition manager at Aspire, said the tournament is a regular Ramadan fixture and noted that participation has grown.While athletes with disabilities compete in multiple sports, including goalball, athletics and football, he described table tennis as particularly accessible.“For table tennis, this is a very easy match for them, a very easy game. That’s why we make it every year,” he said.Alhaddad stressed the rehabilitative and social value of sport. “The sport is very important because they will move their body... for rehabilitation and also to release their stress,” he said. “They will feel like they are one of this community. They can play, they can do everything.”He encouraged families to engage with structured sporting pathways. “If anybody knows someone with special needs, he can send him to our federation for sports for special needs and register him, and also let him be part of this community,” he said.As Ramadan continues, organisers say the message is clear: inclusive sport is not only about competition, but about belonging, dignity and creating heroes within the community.

Horwitz Bishop Chess Academy staged a Rapid Chess Tournament at Al Jazeera Academy in Abu Hamour, attracting more than 250 young players and underlining the growing strength of youth chess in Qatar.The one-day event, held on January 23, featured competitions across four age categories - Under-7, 9, 11 and 13. A total of 29 prizes were awarded across the categories. Adinad Anand claimed the U-7 title, while Muhammadh Nusri (U-9), Muhammed Azam (U-11) and Swarit Tejas Mehta (U-13) secured top honours in their respective categories. Former ICBF general secretary Boban Varkey and ICBF legal cell chairman Jaffarkhan M presented prizes to the winners. 

The Organising Committee of the Al Thumama Ramadan Football Tournament has officially announced the details of the third edition of the championship, reaffirming its position as a flagship community football event for young players in Qatar.The announcement was made during a press conference held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, where officials outlined the tournament’s objectives, format, and growing popularity.In cooperation with the Qatar Sports for All Federation, the tournament will take place at Al Furjan Stadium in the Al Thumama area, coinciding with the start of the holy month of Ramadan. The championship is dedicated exclusively to age groups from 10 to 14 years old, covering players born between 2012 and 2016, making it the only tournament of its kind in Qatar for this specific age category. Registration for participating teams has officially opened and will continue until February 10 through the Qatar Sports for All Federation application.The tournament offers a competitive and rewarding platform, with the first-place team set to receive a cash prize of QR7000, along with the championship trophy and gold medals. The second-place team will earn QR5000 and silver medals, while the third-place team will receive QR3000 and bronze medals. Individual excellence will also be recognized, with the best player awarded QR500, and the top scorer and best goalkeeper each receiving the same amount. In addition, the best ideal team will be awarded a financial prize of QR2000.Head of the Organising Committee, Member of the Municipal Council Hassan Al Ishaq, emphasised the tournament’s unique status and increasing demand. He noted that despite players’ academic commitments, there is a strong and growing eagerness among teams to participate. Al Ishaq revealed that requests to take part in this year’s edition have increased, including a proposal to stage the tournament more than once annually, which is currently under consideration. He also confirmed that a team from one of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries has expressed interest in participating, with the request presently under review. Building on the tournament’s inclusive spirit, he added that a team from Gaza, which participated in the previous edition, is expected to return for the second consecutive year.Executive Director of the Qatar Sports for All Federation Abdullah al-Dosari highlighted that the Al Thumama Ramadan Football Tournament represents a distinguished launch for the 2026 neighbourhood championships. He stressed that the event reflects a sustained commitment to organizing community sports initiatives that serve various segments of society, particularly youth aged between 10 and 14. Al-Dosari described the tournament as a successful model for investing in neighbourhood sports facilities to promote an active lifestyle, encourage fair competition, strengthen social interaction, and discover emerging talents, especially during the spiritually significant month of Ramadan. 

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development, is set to host the 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Tournament for Universities and Higher Education Institutions from February 6 to 11, 2026.Sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and Youth and hosted for the first time in the State of Qatar, the tournament seeks to strengthen cooperation among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, while also contributing to the regional development of women’s university sports.By bringing together universities and higher education institutions from across the GCC, HBKU is advancing its role as an advocate for regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and collaborative institutional partnership. Leveraging world-class infrastructure, the tournament advances the University’s academic mission beyond the classroom, reinforcing student development and well-being as core pillars of higher education.Competition takes place across seven venues, six within Education City and one at Qatar University, with the opening ceremony on February 7, 2026, at Al Shaqab’s Longine Indoor Arena. Around 450 female students representing 16 of the region’s universities and higher education institutions will compete across eight sports: football, volleyball, basketball, padel, table tennis, badminton, athletics, with fencing making its first appearance at the tournament.The tournament’s draw ceremony is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m at Education City Stadium. Attendees will include heads of the technical committees from the relevant federations, representatives from participating universities, and members of the supervisory committee.Commenting on the competition, Dr. Maryam Hamad Al-Mannai, Vice President for Student Affairs, HBKU, and Chair of the tournament’s Supreme Organizing Committee, stated: “Hosting this event reflects the University’s academic and societal mission. It is not solely a sporting occasion, but a complementary experience that brings together sport, education, and culture, while highlighting the role of women in our societies. We are working with various stakeholders to ensure a successful tournament promoting women’s university sports.”Beyond competition, the tournament affirms the core values of teamwork, integrity, and resilience, while advancing women’s participation in sport as a catalyst for human development and social progress.
