Thousands of South Africans marched Saturday to demand respect for their nation's sovereignty after months of pressure from US President Donald Trump on issues from trade to race relations.Trump has clashed repeatedly with South Africa's government, hitting the country with high tariffs, berating President Cyril Ramaphosa in the Oval Office over discredited claims of a "white genocide", and boycotting a G20 summit in Johannesburg last year.Marking Human Rights Day in South Africa — the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre, when apartheid police opened fire on a crowd of black protesters — Ramaphosa's party called for marches "in defence of our sovereignty and democratic gains".The marches come 10 days after South Africa summoned US Ambassador Brent Bozell just a month after his arrival in the country for "undiplomatic remarks"."We cannot, therefore, have a white old man, who looks like he's deranged, tell us in our country, what to do in South Africa," African National Congress Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said Saturday.Named as one of the favourites in the race for the ANC presidency — and thus potentially the country's leadership — at the December 2027 congress, he was speaking to thousands of supporters gathered near the iconic Hillbrow communications tower.Crowds dressed in green and yellow — the ANC's colours — flooded the wide avenues lined with skyscrapers in the centre of the country's economic capital. Another march was organised later that day in Cape Town."We want to defend our country," said demonstrator Siyanda Moloi, a 34-year-old construction worker."I think they will get the message. You have to respect our president, our laws, our policies."The US ambassador said it was hate speech for black South Africans to use a controversial apartheid-era chant, "Kill the Boer" — a word for the country's white Afrikaner population."I don't care what your courts say, it's hate speech," Bozell had said in some of his first public remarks in South Africa.The ANC manifesto convening the rallies said "The principle of national sovereignty is under attack from foreign and domestic forces."Following in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's footsteps, Ramaphosa was ambushed during a White House press conference when Trump showed him video montages and photos containing a mix of inaccuracies and falsehoods about alleged attacks on white South Africans.The Trump administration has also clashed with Ramaphosa's government over South Africa taking US ally Israel to the International Court of Justice for allegedly committing genocide in its war in Gaza.Last year, Trump slapped 30-percent tariffs on most South African exports — the highest for sub-Saharan Africa.The US Supreme Court recently overruled Trump's tariffs policy.But South Africa is among 60 countries facing a US trade investigation that could lead to further tariffs."They hate us," said demonstrator Noxolo Skomolo, a 53-year-old real-estate agent."We are protecting our constitution. We don't want them to bully us. This is our land and our country."Trump has also criticised South Africa's racial justice policies, enacted to address historic inequalities left by the legacy of colonial rule and apartheid — but condemned by the American leader as discriminatory against whites.The call to march condemned a "severe attack" on those policies."Lies are being told about countries in order to justify punitive economic measures and direct foreign interference in domestic politics," it said, without naming the US.March 21 marks the anniversary of the massacre in Sharpeville, south of Johannesburg, where at least 69 people were killed by security forces for demanding an end to the pass laws that limited black people's movement under white-minority rule. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and King Abdullah II ibn al-Hussein of Jordan discussed, at the Amiri Diwan Tuesday afternoon, developments in the region in the light of the current escalation and the continued Iranian aggression targeting Qatar, Jordan, and a number of countries in the region.  In this context, HH the Amir affirmed Qatar's solidarity with Jordan regarding all measures it takes to defend its sovereignty and security and to ensure the safety of its citizens.  King Abdullah renewed his country's solidarity and full support for all measures taken by Qatar to preserve its sovereignty, security, and stability.  The two sides expressed their rejection of these attacks and stressed the need for an immediate cessation of all military actions that could expand the conflict and endanger the security of countries and their peoples.  They also emphasised the importance of intensifying regional and international efforts to de-escalate and contain the ongoing tensions, and to work through diplomatic channels and dialogue to address existing crises in a way that helps prevent further deterioration in the region and enhances prospects for security and stability.  Both sides also discussed a host of regional and international issues of mutual concern, stressing the importance of continuing coordination and consultation between the two countries, especially in light of current developments and their implications for the region's security and stability.  HH the Amir and the Jordanian king also held a bilateral meeting during which they discussed relations between the two sisterly countries and ways to develop them, in addition to exchanging views on a number of regional and international issues of common concern, foremost among them the current crisis and its repercussions on global peace and security.  His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and His Excellency Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Khulaifi attended the session, along with a lineup of Their Excellencies senior officials.  Their Excellencies members of the delegation accompanying the king were also in attendance from the Jordanian side. Earlier, HH the Amir led the welcome and farewell accorded to King Abdullah upon his arrival and departure, along with his accompanying delegation at the Doha International Airport. HE Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Khulaifi was also present.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received Sunday a phone call from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, in which the Egyptian leader reiterated his country's strong condemnation of the continuing attacks against Qatar.Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering solidarity with Doha and pledged full support in safeguarding Qatar's security and sovereignty, while also expressing Cairo's readiness to extend all necessary forms of assistance.The Egyptian president stressed the urgency of stepped-up efforts at this critical stage, calling for stronger joint Arab action to reinforce security and stability across the region.The Amir welcomed Egypt's positions, underscoring Qatar's commitment to sustained coordination and dialogue on matters serving the shared interests of both nations and their peoples. The call also covered the latest regional developments amid the current escalation, as well as ongoing efforts to ease tensions, contain the crisis, and prevent the conflict from spreading further.Earlier, the Amir had also received a verbal message from President Sisi on the same regional developments, conveyed in person by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who visited HH the Amir at Lusail Palace. The minister opened the meeting by extending Sisi's warm personal greetings to the His Highness, wishing him good health and prosperity, and reaffirming Egypt's solidarity with Qatar.The Amir, in turn, asked the minister to carry his greetings back to President Sisi, expressing appreciation for Egypt's consistent and supportive stance toward Qatar and its constructive role in bolstering regional stability.Discussions during the meeting touched on the depth of fraternal ties between the two countries, avenues for further strengthening bilateral relations, and the broader regional situation in the wake of Iran's aggression against Qatar and neighbouring Arab states. The message also emphasised Cairo's commitment to diplomatic solutions as the preferred path to preserving regional security.The meeting was attended by His Excellency Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and His Excellency Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Khulaifi.The high-level exchanges between Cairo and Doha reflect a broader pattern of intensifying Arab diplomatic engagement following Iran's attacks on several Gulf states.Egypt's proactive outreach — through both a direct presidential call and a ministerial visit in the same period — signals the weight Cairo is placing on Arab solidarity at a moment of acute regional tension. The back-to-back contacts also underscore a growing consensus among Arab nations that a unified front and a commitment to diplomatic channels are essential to containing the crisis and preventing further escalation.  

The government issued its strongest rebuke yet of Iran following military strikes that reached Qatari soil, warning it will take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty while calling for an immediate halt to escalation across the region.The condemnation came Wednesday as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani chaired the Cabinet's regular meeting at the Amiri Diwan — a session that followed a dramatic and dangerous uptick in regional hostilities. Missiles or projectiles linked to Iranian military activity had struck Qatari territory, hitting civilian and vital facilities in what the Cabinet described as a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and the principles of good neighbourliness. Following the meeting, Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali al-Mohannadi delivered a statement outlining the government's response. The ;prime minister opened the session by condemning the military escalation and its widening repercussions. He emphasised that Qatar's security and stability — grounded in the grace of Allah, the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani , and the unity of Qatari society — remain firm. He noted that HH the Amir has directed that all services continue without interruption across every sector.He also praised the Qatar Armed Forces for demonstrating a high level of readiness and efficiency in protecting the nation's airspace, commended the security services for maintaining public order, and expressed pride in the composure and cohesion shown by members of the community throughout the crisis.The Cabinet's full statement, directed to the UN Security Council, made clear that Doha intends to pursue both firm defence and urgent diplomacy in equal measure.

In a forceful address at a high‑level Gulf‑European summit Monday, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al‑Thani declared that Qatar “will spare no effort to protect its sovereignty and people” after condemning Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks on Qatari territory as “a blatant violation” and “an unacceptable escalation” threatening regional stability.Held virtually, the joint summit brought together leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the European Union (EU), and several regional countries, including Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkiye, and Armenia. The agenda was dominated by the fast‑deteriorating military situation sweeping across parts of the Middle East and its growing implications for global energy security.“The attacks constitute a blatant violation of our national sovereignty, a direct attack on our security and territorial integrity, and an unacceptable escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region,” Sheikh Mohammed told fellow leaders, his remarks setting the tone for what became an urgent call for restraint and collective response.Commending the “vigilance and defensive capabilities” of the Qatari Armed Forces, His Excellency said their effective response “helped protect the country and contain the effects of the attacks.” He underscored that Qatar was “fully prepared to defend its territories, protect its people, and safeguard its vital infrastructure,” stressing confidence in the armed forces’ strength and readiness while reiterating Doha’s commitment to work with regional partners to “maintain stability and security in the region.”Extending Qatar’s stance beyond its borders, the prime minister strongly condemned the attacks on the sovereign territories of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the UAE, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkiye, Azerbaijan, and Cyprus. He affirmed Qatar’s “full solidarity with these countries in all measures they take to preserve their sovereignty, security, and stability,” adding that such hostilities “undermine the principles of mediation and dialogue that Oman has long championed and promoted in the region.”Welcoming an EU statement urging de‑escalation and reaffirming its commitment to regional security and freedom of navigation, Sheikh Mohammed said it “reflects the strength of relations between the bloc and the GCC countries.” He warned, however, that “the current situation does not only affect one country, but threatens the security of the entire region and exposes global energy markets and supply chains to serious risks.”“Qatar has always been a reliable and responsible energy producer,” he noted, asserting that the country remains committed to its partners and to the stability of global energy markets. Yet, he acknowledged that recent attacks on energy facilities and risks to maritime navigation in the Gulf had compelled Qatar to “adopt temporary measures to ensure the safety of energy infrastructure and personnel.” These measures, he said, aligned with Qatar’s responsibility “to protect lives and vital assets,” assuring that “full supply will resume once the situation stabilizes and the safety of facilities is assured.”The PM concluded with a pointed reminder: “The strikes in the region have targeted sovereign territories, endangered civilians, and damaged civilian infrastructure. Qatar has repeatedly warned since the outbreak of the Gaza war that the continuation of conflict without a political solution would lead to further regional tensions.” Sustained stability, he emphasised, “is a collective responsibility, and maintaining international peace is a shared duty.”Reaffirming Qatar’s readiness to work with partners — including the European Union — to de‑escalate, he expressed appreciation for the EU’s defence co-operation and voiced hopes for deeper joint efforts ahead. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received a telephone call Sunday from French President Emmanuel Macron.The president reiterated France's condemnation of the ongoing Iranian aggression against Qatar and countries of the region, along with the consequent threat to their security, stability, and sovereignty.Macron underscored France's full solidarity with Qatar in confronting the attacks. He commended the efficiency of the Qatar Armed Forces in reinforcing security and protecting all those on its soil, including French residents.Addressing the bilateral relations, both sides emphasised the importance of ensuring the stability of energy supplies, freedom of navigation in critical maritime lanes, and shoring up the existing defence co-operation between the two countries.The two sides reiterated their commitment to continuing the enduring strategic partnership between them, stressing that achieving lasting stability in the region requires de-escalation and giving dialogue and diplomatic paths overriding priority in addressing the current challenge.HH the Amir also received a phone call from Syrian President Ahmed al- Sharaa.Al-Sharaa reiterated Syria's condemnation of the ongoing Iranian aggression against Qatar and the countries of the region, and its violation of the sovereignty of countries and threat to their security and stability.They also discussed the developments in the region and the rapidly evolving situation on the ground. Both sides emphasised the importance of an immediate cessation of escalation and the need to prevent a slide into chaos.Both sides stressed the need to intensify regional and international efforts to create the appropriate conditions for de-escalation, and to rely on political and diplomatic paths in accordance with the principles of the United Nations and its charter to contribute to strengthening regional security and stability.In his call with HH the Amir Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guellehexpressed his country's solidarity with Qatar and support in facing the Iranian aggression.In response, HH the Amir thanked the Djibouti president for his country's stance and highlighted the strong bilateral relations between the two nations.Both leaders stressed the importance of an immediate end to escalation and emphasied prioritising dialogue and diplomatic means to address outstanding issues, in order to preserve security and stability in the region.In his call with HH the Amir Sheikh Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong voiced his country's solidarity with Qatar, stressing Singapore's condemnation of the continued Iranian aggression, and expressing his appreciation for the care and attention given by the relevant authorities in Qatar to Singaporean residents.HH the Amir expressed his thanks and appreciation to the prime minister for Singapore's support.The two sides discussed the key developments in the region and their repercussions on regional and international peace and stability. They stressed the importance of prioritising political solutions through dialogue and negotiations, and the need to intensify diplomatic efforts and support endeavours aimed at consolidating stability in a way that preserves the security of the region.HH the Amir also received a phone call from The Gambia President Adama Barrow, who inquired about the situation in Qatar, condemning the Iranian attacks and affirming Gambia's support for Qatar.HH the Amir voiced his appreciation to the president for his constructive stances and efforts, commending The Gambia's role in supporting Qatar and its people.Both sides stressed the importance of prioritising dialogue and diplomatic means to address tensions, in order to reduce escalation and enhance security and stability in the region.In his call with HH the Amir King Felipe VI assured Spain's solidarity with Qatar following the Iranian attacks, stressing his country's support for Qatar in preserving its sovereignty and the security of its territory and citizens. He also commended Qatar's efforts in managing the current crisis, praising the efficiency of the measures taken and their success in maintaining security and stability.HH the Amir reassured the king about the situation of the Spanish community, stressing that they enjoy care and attention, while at the same time praising Spain's efforts in supporting everything that would end the war and contain its repercussions.The call also discussed the latest developments in the region and its serious repercussions on regional and international security and stability. Both sides stressed the need for an immediate halt to the military escalation and prevent its spread.HH the Amir also received a phone call from Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who voiced his country's solidarity with Qatar, stressing Colombia's support for all measures taken by Qatar to preserve its sovereignty, security, and stability.They also discussed the developments in the region with both sides underpinning the import His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received a phone call on Tuesday from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. In the call, the Indonesian president expressed his country's full solidarity and support for the State of Qatar and its people in the face of the blatant Iranian aggression. He condemned any targeting of national territory and sovereignty in the region and emphasized the urgency of de-escalation and a return to negotiations. Meanwhile, HH the Amir expressed his deep appreciation for Indonesia's stance and support, noting that it reflects the strong bilateral relations and mutual understanding between the two countries. Both leaders also discussed current regional developments, underlining the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts as the way to contain the crisis and preserve regional security and stability.

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani participated in the 50th extraordinary meeting of the GCC Ministerial Council, held Sunday via video conference, in the presence of Their Excellencies the GCC Foreign Ministers, to discuss developments in the Iranian aggression against the GCC countries.At the outset of the meeting, the Ministerial Council voiced its strongest condemnation of the Iranian missile attacks targeting the territories of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman and Jordan, in flagrant violation of their sovereignty.The Ministerial Council also affirmed the solidarity of all GCC countries in addressing Iranian attacks and defending their sovereignty, security, and national interests, while reserving their right to respond and defend themselves in accordance with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.The council stressed that this heinous targeting is contrary to the provisions of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the principles of good neighborliness, and cannot be accepted under any justification or pretext, urging the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately cease any escalatory actions that would undermine regional security and stability.  

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani met Wednesday with French President's Envoy to Lebanon Jean-Yves Le Drian, who is visiting the country.They discussed bilateral co-operation between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen it. They explored the latest developments in Lebanon, in addition to several issues of common concern.The prime minister stressed that Lebanon's stability is a fundamental pillar of regional stability, and underlined the need for all parties to abide by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and to fully respect Lebanon's sovereignty.He also reaffirmed Qatar's condemnation of the Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, emphasising the need for the Security Council to assume its responsibilities to stop these violations and to preserve Lebanon's stability.The PM further highlighted the pivotal role of the Quintet Group in supporting Lebanon, noting in this context that Qatar will continue to work closely with its partners to ensure coordinated efforts aimed at safeguarding Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and supporting its recovery and development paths.  

Qatar took part in the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss developments in Somalia, convened Saturday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.His Excellency the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi led Qatar's delegation at the meeting.In Qatar's speech before the meeting, HE al-Muraikhi noted that the meeting is being held at an extremely sensitive time amid rapid developments, prompting OIC member states to uphold a collective responsibility in defending the principles of sovereignty and respect for international law, in addition to protecting security and stability in the region, the Horn of Africa region, and the Red Sea.Al-Muraikhi reiterated Qatar's vehement condemnation of Israel's recognition of the "Somaliland" region of Somalia as an independent state.He stressed that this move constitutes a unilateral measure that contravenes the very essence of international law, undermines the sovereignty, national unity, territorial integrity, and internationally recognised borders of Somalia, and represents a grave precedent that goes in contrast with the principles of international law, as well as the United Nations and OIC Charters. 

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te Thursday said the island is determined ‌to defend its sovereignty and boost ‍its defence in the face of China’s increasing expansion, after Beijing fired rockets towards the island as part of military drills. The international community is watching to see whether the Taiwanese people possess the resolve to defend themselves, Lai said in a New Year’s ‍speech broadcast live from the presidential office in Taipei. “As president, my stance has always been clear: to resolutely defend national sovereignty and strengthen national defence,” Lai said, noting China had targeted Taiwan’s newly added combat capabilities as a “hypothetical adversary” in their drills this week. He said that demonstrated the need for increasing defence procurement, urging opposition parties to support his plan to boost Taiwan’s defence spending by $40bn, a proposal currently stuck alongside other issues in a ‌political deadlock in the opposition-controlled parliament. “Whether China can achieve its goals on schedule is one thing,” Lai said when asked about a US report saying China was preparing to have the capability to win a ‍fight for Taiwan by 2027. “The coming year, 2026, will be ‌a crucial one for Taiwan,” he said, adding Taiwan must “make plans for the worst, but hope for the best.” “We are willing to engage in exchanges and cooperation with China on an equal and dignified basis, promoting a peaceful and shared environment across the strait,” Lai said. “As long as China acknowledges the existence of the Republic of China, respects the Taiwanese people’s desire for a democratic and free way of life.” China claims Taiwan as its own territory, and it has not ruled out using force to take it under Chinese control. Taiwan rejects China’s claims. After Lai’s address, China said he was trying to deceive Taiwanese ​and mislead international public opinion. “Lai-Ching-te’s address ‌is riddled with lies and reckless assertions, hostility and malice,” a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said in comments reported by state broadcaster CCTV. Lai’s speech came just two ‍days after the Chinese exercises named “Justice Mission 2025”. China fired dozens of rockets towards Taiwan and deployed a large number of warships and aircraft near island in a show of force that drew concern from Western allies including the European Commission and Britain. Taipei condemned the drills as a threat to regional security and a blatant provocation. Beijing announced late on Wednesday that it had completed ​the drills, saying its military would continue to strengthen their combat-readiness. China’s President Xi Jinping struck a familiar tone on Taiwan in his New Year’s address late on Wednesday, repeating last year’s warning to what Beijing considers as separatist forces that China’s “reunification” with Taiwan can not be stopped. The drills, China’s largest by area and the closest yet to Taiwan, forced the island to cancel dozens of domestic commercial flights and dispatch military jets and warships to monitor the exercises. The Chinese manoeuvres began 11 days after the US had announced a record $11.1bn arms package for Taiwan. China’s military said for the first time that the drills were aimed at deterring outside intervention.
