QNB Group, Qatar Airways announce strategic global payments partnership

QNB Group and Qatar Airways have entered into a strategic global payments partnership that brings together the international reach and capabilities of two of Qatar’s most recognised institutions. The collaboration will integrate QNB’s payment acceptance expertise with Qatar Airways’ digital sales channels to support secure, efficient and seamless transactions for customers across the airline’s global network. QNB Group CEO Abdulla Mubarak al-Khalifa and Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad al-Khater signed the partnership agreement, in the presence of senior representatives from both organisations. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to innovation, resilience, and the continued development of Qatar’s digital payments ecosystem. It also demonstrates how leading Qatari institutions can combine complementary strengths to support secure, scalable and globally connected commerce. With both organisations operating across international markets, the partnership will support cross-border commerce and strengthen the infrastructure of digital transactions across Qatar Airways’ global sales network. Under the partnership, QNB Group will process digital payments for Qatar Airways’ e-commerce transactions, while both organisations work together to enhance transaction visibility, operational efficiency and the overall payment experience across the airline’s digital sales channels. The arrangement combines Qatar Airways’ global customer reach and digital commerce platform with QNB Group’s capabilities and payments expertise. Al-Khalifa said, “This partnership reflects QNB’s continued focus on building globally connected financial capabilities rooted in Qatar. By combining QNB Group’s payments expertise with Qatar Airways’ international reach, we are strengthening the infrastructure required to support secure, scalable and seamless digital commerce, while contributing to the continued evolution of Qatar’s digital economy. It further reinforces QNB’s position as a leading payments innovator with a growing international footprint and the capabilities to support commerce across global markets. “The group continues to invest in next-generation acquiring capabilities, e-commerce infrastructure, payment technologies, and advanced payment security frameworks. The collaboration creates a powerful platform capable of supporting growing digital transaction volumes while delivering a secure, reliable, and frictionless payment experience for customers worldwide.” Al-Khater said, “As the aviation industry continues to evolve, Qatar Airways remains focused on building the digital capabilities required to support a modern, agile and globally connected business. “Our partnership with QNB Group represents an important step in that journey, enabling us to further enhance the technology and financial infrastructure that underpins our operations. By combining our respective strengths, we are advancing our digital transformation agenda, increasing efficiency across our ecosystem and reinforcing our position as one of the world’s leading digitally enabled airlines.” Beyond payment processing, the partnership establishes a framework for continued collaboration across digital commerce, customer experience, emerging technologies, and evolving payment solutions. Both organisations will explore opportunities that support their shared international ambitions, while responding to the evolving needs of travellers.

Japan organisers 'not satisfied' as empty seats blight Asian Games

Asian Games organisers admitted on Saturday they were "not satisfied" with ticket sales after swathes of empty seats were seen at the main stadium and other venues in Japan.The 100m sprints are one of the highlights of any Games, but the 30,000-capacity Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium appeared to be only about one-quarter full on Friday night for the blue-riband events.Even the prospect of a women's pole vault gold for Japan's Misaki Morota could not pull in the home punters in big numbers at the start of the weekend.The Aichi-Nagoya Games said that less than 60 percent of tickets had been snapped up for eight sports, including football, with a similar amount unsold for the closing ceremony in eight days' time. "We are not satisfied," said Satoshi Murate, secretary-general of the Games organising committee in response to a question from AFP."We will keep aiming for full stadiums, keep selling tickets and work to make sure people who have secured seats actually come." He said more than 90 percent of tickets were sold for the opening ceremony a week ago, but blamed no-shows for large sections of empty seats greeting the parading athletes and lighting of the Games torch. "Overall I think sales are strong," he said."But it has been pointed out that there are noticeable empty seats at some competitions."There are several reasons. First, some sessions include several matches in one day. Everyone focuses on the headline match." He said tickets that had been given away to Games stakeholders, such as sponsors, were not always used."Seats have been allocated but some people can't come."As a result, some competitions do have noticeable empty seats, and we find that regrettable." - Apology for mix-ups - Murate also apologised for mix-ups with accommodation and transport.Several teams have rounded on the organisers with Thailand likening it to a "chaotic" game of "musical chairs" and South Korea saying "they deserve a failing grade."The biggest issue has been a shortage of rooms for the 17,000 participants, a problem compounded by delays at airports and hours-long waits to board a cruise ship acting as a floating hotel.No traditional athletes' village has been built, as a cost-cutting measure. Teams have instead been staying in temporary container-style huts, hotels and the Costa Serena cruise ship.Erratic transport services have seen competitors' buses to training and venues turning up late or, in some cases, not at all."There have been mistakes in accommodation and transport, for various reasons," admitted Murate."Whatever the cause, AINAGOC (the organising committee) is responsible for providing the service and I sincerely apologise for the mistakes."Our staff work every day to identify the causes of each mistake and make sure they don't happen again."

Robust retail sales underscore US economy’s resilience; but inflation pressures building

US retail sales rebounded sharply in August as households boosted purchases of a range of goods while also spending more at restaurants and bars, reinforcing the economy’s resilience even as consumers grow more anxious about high inflation. The stronger-than-expected report from the Commerce Department on Wednesday prompted economists to upgrade their gross domestic product growth estimates for the third quarter. Together with other data on Wednesday showing a surge in import prices last month, strong demand sealed the argument for a widely anticipated interest rate increase from the Federal Reserve later in the day, economists said. The reports followed data this month showing producer and consumer prices accelerated in August, while the labor market regained its poise after wobbling through much of summer. “This reaffirms that the economy is more than capable of handling higher interest rates, providing the Fed plenty of scope to hike to get inflation under control,” said Bradley Saunders, North America economist at Capital Economics. Retail sales jumped 1.2% last month, the largest increase since March, after a revised 0.5% drop in July, the Commerce Department’s Census Bureau said. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast retail sales, which are mostly goods and are not adjusted for inflation, would rebound 0.8% after a previously reported 0.6% drop in July. The decline in July was the first in nine months. Sales increased 6.0% on a year-over-year basis in August. Last month’s increase also partially reflected higher gasoline prices, which lifted receipts at service stations by 3.1%. Households have continued to spend despite stubbornly high inflation because of the oil price shock and supply chain strains from the US-Israeli war with Iran. Consumers have, however, become more selective and are seeking lower-priced goods. Spending is being supported by steady wage growth and recent stock market gains. Households are also saving less and tapping into their nest eggs. But with gasoline prices rising sharply this month and inflation-adjusted wages declining, August’s retail sales pace is unsustainable. Lower-income households are struggling to keep pace with rising energy and food prices, economists said. Consumer sentiment deteriorated this month. “More consumers are losing their purchasing power,” said Scott Anderson, chief US economist at BMO Capital Markets. “We expect this to be an increasing drag on real consumer spending growth in the fourth quarter and into 2027. Healthy retail sales reports like this one are more dependent than ever on continued household wealth gains.” The broad rise in sales last month was led by a 2.6% increase in receipts at nonstore retailers, likely boosted by households restocking for the new school year as well as the fading drag from an earlier than usual Amazon Prime sales promotion. Sales at clothing stores climbed 0.7%, also likely lifted by back-to-school purchases. Receipts at vehicle and parts dealers rose 0.6%, while those at furniture stores gained 0.9%. Electronics and appliance store sales jumped 1.6%, and receipts at sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book retailers were 1.2% higher. But receipts at building material and garden equipment retailers fell 0.2%. Sales at food services, the only services component in the report, increased 1.2% after edging up 0.5% in July. This category is considered a key measure of household finances. Retail sales excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services surged 1.4% last month, the largest gain since September 2024, after an unrevised 0.4% decline in July. Economists had forecast these so-called core retail sales, which correspond most closely with the consumer spending component of gross domestic product, would rise 0.4%. Economists at Goldman Sachs raised their GDP growth estimate for the July-September quarter by 0.5 percentage point to a 3.0% annualized rate. Their counterparts at JPMorgan boosted their estimate to a 3.5% pace from a 2.75% rate. The economy grew at a 1.5% pace last quarter. Growth prospects for this quarter were boosted by a separate report from the Census Bureau showing business inventories jumped 0.8% in July. A third report from the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics showed import prices rebounded 0.7% last month amid solid increases in the costs of capital and consumer goods, after declining by 0.3% for two straight months. Economists had forecast import prices, which exclude tariffs, would rise 0.4%.

Back-to-school shopping drives retail activity

The local retail sector is seeing a strong seasonal boost as families step up spending on school uniforms, bags, stationery and electronic devices ahead of the start of the new academic year. Bookshops, shopping centres and retailers have reported increased footfall over the recent days, as parents seek to complete their children’s school requirements before classes begin.Many families have accompanied their children to the market to choose their bags, stationery colours and designs, adding to the lively atmosphere across retail outlets.  Some sales representatives said the final days of the summer holiday have brought a noticeable increase in demand, making the back-to-school period one of the key retail seasons of the year.A wide range of products at different price points, combined with local and imported options, is helping retailers attract consumers across different budget segments.  School uniforms are among the most sought-after products, with retailers expanding dedicated sections offering approved colours and sizes, alongside school shoes and sportswear.Some stores are also promoting multi-item packages and seasonal discounts to encourage larger purchases.It has been noticed that many parents are increasingly looking for uniforms that balance quality, comfort and durability, particularly given the high temperatures during the early months of the academic year.  Lightweight and breathable fabrics are therefore attracting considerable interest.  School bags are another major sales category, with retailers offering extensive collections featuring contemporary designs and popular characters, superheroes and football stars.Lightweight and durable models with multiple compartments are particularly popular, as parents look for practical designs that can accommodate books, notebooks and school supplies without placing excessive weight on students.  Meanwhile, promotional bundles have been enhancing sales, with some retailers offering free lunch boxes or water bottles with selected bags. Such offers can reduce the overall cost of purchasing school essentials separately and provide an additional incentive for families. Stationery has also recorded strong demand, covering notebooks, pens, pencils, colours, rulers, erasers, sharpeners and cases for organising school supplies.Notebooks remained among the strongest-selling items in spite of introducing more digital tools to learning.  A high-quality 80-page notebook is priced at around QR12, while a pack of 12 60-page notebooks is available for approximately QR14, bringing the cost per notebook to around QR1.50.However, the growing role of technology in education is reshaping back-to-school spending. Retailers are promoting tablets, laptops and printers, with instalment plans and buy-now-pay-later services helping families spread the cost of larger purchases. Some companies are also offering educational bundles that combine devices with software and learning applications. Educational games that blend learning with entertainment are another emerging category, reflecting the increasing use of digital tools to support students’ skills and engagement. The expansion of technology-related purchases is giving retailers an additional revenue stream during the traditionally busy back-to-school period, while payment plans are making higher-value products more accessible to households managing multiple school-related expenses.

Faced with lacklustre domestic demand, China's automakers have an increasingly powerful incentive to accelerate a push overseas that was already well under way.

Chinese car sales are booming almost everywhere; just not at home

China's car industry is on a tear overseas, storming markets from Europe to Southeast Asia and heaping pressure on long-established automakers like Toyota Motor and Volkswagen.  But it is a different story at home, where car sales have been in steady decline since late last year, as weak consumer demand and years of intense price competition have left the world's biggest auto market glutted with excess capacity. While major Chinese car companies like BYD, Geely and Chery have long aspired to become global heavyweights, the industry's rapid expansion is now driven as much by economic necessity as by ambition, analysts and industry insiders say.  Faced with lacklustre domestic demand, China's automakers have an increasingly powerful incentive to accelerate a push overseas that was already well under way. That will only add to the squeeze on European and Japanese rivals already struggling to compete with China's technologically advanced, low-cost electric vehicles. "Chinese automakers have excess manufacturing capacity, highly competitive supply chains, increasingly sophisticated products and a strong economic incentive to find growth outside China," said Bill Russo, CEO of Shanghai-based advisory firm Automobility. Going global "is becoming a strategic necessity" for leading Chinese carmakers, he added.  Car sales in China fell by a fifth to 1.47mn vehicles in July from a year earlier, marking the 10th straight month of decline, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed on Tuesday. Exports, meanwhile, surged 88% to 923,000 vehicles. Although the data includes non-Chinese brands produced in China, the trend of double-digit falls at home and double-digit export growth holds up among domestic automakers. Cui Dongshu, the head of the passenger car association, attributed the latest weakness to elevated fuel prices that hurt demand for gasoline-powered vehicles and persistent softness in the entry-level sedan segment. More broadly, the car industry reflects the dynamics now playing out in the world's second-largest economy. Booming factories and exports are propping up growth, while a weak property market and ailing consumer spending are curbing domestic demand. Chinese policymakers are struggling with an economy that produces more than it can sell at home. For automakers, overseas markets offer an increasingly important outlet.In the first half of this year, China's domestic car sales fell by 2.3mn vehicles from a year earlier, a 20% drop. That's equivalent to all of the domestic new car registrations in Japan, the world's fourth-largest auto market, during the same period. Meanwhile, China's car exports jumped 71% during the first half.  HSBC analyst Yuqian Ding said domestic car demand was likely to stabilise and potentially begin recovering from late August through September as the new model cycle picks up momentum. Still, a V-shaped recovery appears unlikely, she said. BYD, for example, has offset a 35% slump in domestic sales during the first seven months of the year with overseas sales surging 79% year-on-year. Brazil and Britain have emerged as its largest single-country markets outside China in 2026.  China's growing overseas presence poses a particular challenge for Japan. Since 2023, China has been the world's largest vehicle exporter, a title long held by its Asian rival. "Japan's rise as an automotive exporter was built around manufacturing efficiency, quality and fuel economy," Russo said. China's edge today is broader, he added, encompassing "electrification, batteries, software, intelligent features, supply-chain scale and very rapid product development." "That combination could make China's globalisation considerably more disruptive." The pressure from Chinese players is already visible in key overseas markets. Japanese automakers held around 12% of Europe's passenger vehicle market share in the first quarter of 2026, little changed from four years earlier, according to Counterpoint Research. Over the same period, Chinese automakers expanded their share from just 3% to 16%, which registration data suggests came at the expense of some European, South Korean and U.S. rivals.  The gap is particularly stark in EVs. Chinese brands account for nearly a quarter of Europe's EV shipments, while Japanese automakers make up just under 5%. "The real separation is in EVs," said Abhilash Gupta, research analyst at Counterpoint Research. "This is an electrification gap, not just a price story." Increasingly, Chinese automakers are also moving beyond pure exports and building factories in Europe. Counterpoint forecasts Chinese brands will capture more than 20% of Europe's overall passenger vehicle market and 29% of its EV market by 2030. "Tariffs can slow that curve, but they're not going to reverse it," Gupta said.

The Supreme Judiciary Council (SJC) has announced results for its online judicial auction activities during the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, with the total value of assets sold exceeding QR1.3bn.  The results underscore the success of ongoing digital transformation initiatives that have streamlined judicial services, making court-supervised auctions more accessible, efficient, and attractive to both investors and the public. According to official data, the judicial enforcement system handled 5,993 enforcement cases during the second quarter, of which 3,308 were successfully closed. The auctions featured 2,531 assets offered for sale, with 1,304 assets successfully sold, generating a cumulative value of more than QR1.3bn.In addition, 916 parties completed enforcement procedures during the reporting period, while the cumulative number of judicial auctions conducted by the SJC has now exceeded 36,500. The auctions covered a diverse portfolio of 10 asset categories: real estate, vehicles, heavy equipment, classic cars, jewellery, valuable collectibles, premium vehicle registration plates, livestock, scrap materials, and other public auction items.  Over recent years, the SJC has expanded its electronic judicial services by introducing online auction registration, digital bidding, electronic notifications, and integrated enforcement procedures. These reforms have reduced processing times, enhanced transparency, minimised administrative burdens, and improved access to judicial services for citizens, residents, businesses, and investors.  Judicial auctions have become an increasingly important pillar of Qatar’s legal and economic ecosystem by facilitating the timely enforcement of court judgments, accelerating debt recovery, and supporting commercial certainty.  The strong second-quarter performance comes against the backdrop of Qatar’s resilient economy.  Compared with the previous quarter (Q1), the second quarter of 2026 reflects continued momentum in Qatar’s judicial enforcement system, driven by stronger asset values and sustained operational efficiency.  While the overall number of enforcement cases remained broadly stable, the value of assets sold surpassed QR1.3bn, indicating that higher-value properties and commercial assets were brought to auction and successfully liquidated.  The closure of 3,308 cases, together with the sale of 1,304 assets from 2,531 assets offered, demonstrates the results of improvements in the effectiveness of judicial execution and asset disposal.  The cumulative total of more than 36,500 judicial auctions also points to the steady expansion of the SJC’s auction platform, reflecting growing public participation, increased confidence in digital auction mechanisms, and the judiciary’s ongoing success in accelerating the enforcement of court judgments.

Trump, Xi discuss Taiwan and soybeans in call aimed at easing ties

China agreed to buy more US-farmed soybeans in what President Donald Trump called a “very positive” call with President Xi Jinping Wednesday, even as Beijing warned ‌Washington about arms sales to Taiwan. In a goodwill gesture two months before Trump’s expected visit to Beijing, Xi ‌agreed to hike soybean purchases from ‍the US to 20mn tonnes in the current season, up from 12mn tonnes previously, Trump said. Soybean futures rallied sharply. Hours after Xi’s virtual meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Xi and Trump discussed Taiwan and a wide range of trade and security issues that remain a source of tension between the world’s biggest economies. Both leaders ‍publicly affirmed their personal stake in strong relations after the call, their first since late November. “All very positive,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. “The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extremely good one, and we both realise how important it is to keep it that way.” “I attach great importance to Sino-US relations,” Xi Jinping said, according to an official government account. “Both sides are signalling that they want to preserve stability in the US-China relationship,” said Bonnie Glaser, head of the Indo-Pacific programme at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, ‌a think-tank. Though Trump has tagged China as the reason for several hawkish policy steps from Canada to Greenland and Venezuela, he’s eased policy towards Beijing in the last several months in key areas from tariffs to advanced computer chips and drones. One key exception is on Taiwan policy. The US announced its largest-ever arms ‌sales deal with Taiwan in December, including $11.1bn in weapons that could ostensibly be used to defend itself against an attack by Beijing. Taipei expects more such sales. China views Taiwan as its own territory, a position Taipei rejects. Washington has formal diplomatic ties with Beijing, but maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan and is the island’s most important arms supplier. The US is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself. “The United States must carefully handle arms sales to Taiwan,” Beijing said in an official summary of the meeting. The dismissal or investigation into several senior military leaders in China has stirred concern about the implications for Beijing’s foreign policy. But Trump downplayed the investigation into Central Military Commission vice-chairman Zhang Youxia, saying over the weekend that “as far as I’m concerned, there’s one boss in China”, and “that’s President Xi”. The last nuclear treaty between Russia and the United States is soon to expire, raising the risk of a new arms race in which China will ‌also play a key role with its own growing nuclear stockpile. Trump has said that he wants China to be part of arms control. The Kremlin said it was a topic between Xi and Putin. Economic ‍issues continue to be a flashpoint between the world’s biggest consumer and its biggest factory. Trump has made tariffs on imports a pillar of his strategy to revive domestic manufacturing jobs. US Vice-President J D Vance on Wednesday unveiled plans for a preferential trade bloc of allies for critical minerals, part of an effort to eliminate one key area of leverage that Beijing has over Washington given its control of key metals. But the two sides are working to find areas of accord heading into an expected April state visit by Trump to Beijing.
