Team Qatar’s debut entry in the 24 Hours of Le Mans began in earnest with a busy day of on-track action. With five hours of practice over two sessions and a 30-minute qualifying, the team completed a total of 47 laps and secured progression into Hyperpole qualifying.It was an encouraging first day at the iconic endurance race for the #62 Team Qatar by Iron Lynx entry, with valuable lessons learned ahead of a second day of running.The highlight of action came during the 30-minute qualifying session, which got underway alongside the LMP2 prototype class. Taking the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG LMGT3 car was Qatar’s Abdulla al-Khelaifi. Heading out onto the legendary 13.6km circuit, al-Khelaifi set his fastest lap early in the session after traffic compromised his later runs. He recorded a 3m57.531s on his second lap before nervously slipping into the drop zone, where the slowest 10 of the 25 LMGT3 entries are eliminated from Hyperpole contention.However, a post-session disqualification for another competitor elevated Team Qatar into 15th position, securing the team’s place in Hyperpole. **media[456490]**“I’m delighted for the team that we were able to progress to Hyperpole, and we managed it by the skin of our teeth!” said a delighted Al-Khelaifi. “It was very tight, but I’m really happy for the guys as I wanted them to have a chance to compete in Hyperpole and now I’m super happy that we can, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in that session and hopefully progress further.”The opening three-hour practice session earlier in the day allowed teams and drivers to continue acclimatising to the circuit following Sunday’s Test Day. Despite a number of yellow flags and slow zones to recover prototypes stranded in the gravel, the Team Qatar machine demonstrated strong pace from the outset.Julian Hanses recorded the team’s fastest time of the session with a 3m55.904s lap, placing the car fourth overall in the FP1 timesheets.The second practice session, held under darkness, provided a productive end to proceedings. The team completed a total of 23 laps during FP2, with al-Khelaifi taking the opening stint before handing over to Hanses after 50 minutes. Giuliano Alesi then completed the final 40 minutes of the session.“It’s been a historic day at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as Team Qatar has taken to the track at this famous race for the very first time,” said Abdulrahman bin Abdul Latif al-Mannai, President of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) and Lusail International Circuit (LIC).“Seeing the Mercedes-AMG LMGT3 in Qatari colours leave the pit lane was a moment of immense pride. Our presence at Le Mans reflects a long-term vision to support and develop motorsport in Qatar, while demonstrating that our drivers, engineers and talent can compete on the biggest stages in the world,” added al-Mannai. 

Team Qatar will make their Le Mans 24 Hours endurance debut this weekend ‌in a significant step for a small country with big motorsport ambitions. The team ​have linked up with Italy-based Iron ‌Lynx to field an LMGT3 Mercedes-AMG entry at the French Circuit de la ‌Sarthe with Qatari driver Abdulla al-Khelaifi partnering ‌German Julian Hanses and Frenchman Giuliano Alesi, son ‌of former Formula One racer Jean. Qatar’s Le Mans entry is part of a plan to grow its local involvement in the sport. The country already hosts MotoGP, Formula One and the World Endurance Championship (WEC) rounds, is a stakeholder in the Audi F1 team via Qatar Investment Authority and is home to Dakar Rally champion Nasser al-Attiyah. “The vision for us...is to have Qatari drivers competing at the highest level of motorsports, whether it’s Le Mans or even Formula One,” Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation President Abdulrahman bin Abdullatif al-Mannai told Reuters. “Qatari ​drivers picked up by teams and factories - this is what we’d like to see at the end of it. We started very, very small in our national championships and now our regional, continental and now we’re pushing ‌to the worldwide stage.” **media[456033]** The Hypercar ​category is the pinnacle at Le Mans, with Ferrari chasing a fourth win ​in succession after ending Toyota’s five-year run at the top. LMGT3 is the third tier, after LMP2 prototypes run by independent teams. LMGT3 is also the largest of the classes, with 25 entries and 75 drivers this year on a 62-car starting grid for what will be the 94th running of the race. Team Qatar also have a Qatari engineer, another small step towards building the future. “First of all you need to create excitement, you want people to be excited about this new prospect, and then we start recruiting people, developing them and taking them to these international events,” said al-Mannai. “One day, hopefully, we will have ‌a fully Qatari team competing.” The next ‌step would be prototypes, with the GT3 programme continuing to provide a ladder for Qatari drivers. “When you think of motorsport in Qatar, it is rallies,” said al-Mannai. “We have a lot less experience when it comes to circuit racing. And this is what we are trying to do. “We have a single-seater programme, we have a rally programme, we have an endurance race programme, and you will see in the coming years more and more Qataris coming up at the international level.” The Iran war and conflict in the Gulf region forced Qatar to postpone the ​MotoGP race from April until November, with the opening World Endurance round at Lusail moved from March to October. That leaves Qatar hosting WEC, MotoGP and Formula One rounds at Lusail within five weeks at the same track outside Doha. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia had to cancel April F1 races because of the situation and the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix that close out the season in November and December remain scheduled but with lingering uncertainty. “We’re planning everything as if everything will happen. And we’re just hoping the US and Iran will come to an ‌agreement and things will be ​better,” said al-Mannai. “In terms of planning, we are ready for these races. We just need the politicians to agree.”

Charles Leclerc has agreed a multi-year extension with his “second family” Ferrari days out from his home Monaco Grand Prix, the Formula One team announced on Wednesday. The 28-year-old has been with Ferrari since 2019, winning eight Grand Prix - his last victory was in 2024 - with his highest finish in the world championship being runner-up to Max Verstappen in 2022. “Scuderia Ferrari HP announces the renewal of its agreement with Charles Leclerc, who will continue to wear the team’s colours for the coming seasons of the Formula 1 World Championship,” read a Ferrari statement on their website. Leclerc, who sits in third position in this year's title race, just three points ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton, said that he was ecstatic to continue his dream drive with Ferrari. “It’s the team I've loved and dreamt of being part of since I was a child, and after all these years it has become a second family,” he said. “Together we’ve shared incredible moments and some tougher ones, but I believe in this team more than ever, and I’m deeply grateful that we will keep pushing side by side toward our shared goal of bringing the World Championship back to Maranello. “Being a Ferrari driver is a dream, but it's also a responsibility I never take for granted.” Ferrari lauded their “second-most capped Formula 1 driver and (who) also ranks second for pole positions, behind only Michael Schumacher.” “This renewal feels like something very natural for us,” said team principal Fred Vasseur. “Over these seasons we have seen him grow, to become not only one of the strongest drivers in Formula 1, but also a person who is completely at one with the team and everything Ferrari represents. “We appreciate his talent, we love his determination and the way he approaches every day with the people in the Scuderia, both on and off the track.”

 Karim Rizkallah claimed a dramatic victory in Round 3 of the Qatar Karting Championship (QKC) after edging Victor Litaudon by a razor-thin margin of just 0.031 seconds in the Grand Final at Lusail International Circuit on Tuesday night. Competing on the 1.124km Lusail track, Rizkallah completed the 12-lap race in 12 minutes 49.943 seconds, narrowly holding off Litaudon in one of the closest finishes of the season. Rizkallah also clocked the fastest lap of the race at 1:02.886.Litaudon stayed glued to the leader throughout the race and crossed the line only fractions behind in 12:49.974, while Alfie McElroy secured third place after finishing 5.320 seconds off the pace.Felice Carena delivered another consistent performance to finish fourth, with championship leader Tameem Hassiba rounding off the top five after a solid drive that helped him strengthen his position in the standings.Following three rounds, Hassiba continues to lead the championship with 60 points, having collected 25 points in Round 2 and 10 in Round 3 after his opening-round tally. Litaudon sits second overall on 54 points, while Round 3 winner Rizkallah moved closer to the top after climbing to third with 52 points.Danish Quereshi remains fourth in the standings on 44 points, while Arkadiusz Barski completes the top five with 27 points despite failing to finish in Round 3.

Max Verstappen's luckless pursuit of an endurance racing victory again ended in disappointment Sunday as his Mercedes broke down when leading the 24 Hours of Nuerburgring. The 28-year-old Dutchman, who is having another difficult season with his Red Bull Formula One team and has threatened to leave the discipline, is competing in a growing number of endurance races in GT3 cars, a category derived from production cars. He was eagerly awaited by tens of thousands of fans at the legendary German circuit. The car he shared with Spaniard Daniel Juncadella, Frenchman Jules Gounon and Austrian Lucas Auer was ahead with three hours to go when it pulled into the pits due to noises and vibrations. Following a lengthy check, mechanics replaced a section of the driveshaft. It returned to the track in 38th place handing victory to a rival Mercedes driven by Maro Engel, Maxime Martin, Fabian Schiller and Luca Stolz.It was the first time in ten years that the German marque had won the 24 Hours of the Nuerburgring. In March, Verstappen crossed the line first in a four-hour race at the track, but was disqualified because his car had used too many sets of tyres. Vertappen said Sunday morning on his web site that he enjoyed the event. "The competition, endurance style racing with team-mates. A 24-hour race, especially here, is incredibly challenging. That whole combination," but he added that he could not promise to be back next year"I will for sure try, but it also depends on my calendar." **media[446726]**The Dutchman is seventh in the F1 driver standings after four Grands Prix. He has constantly criticised new technical regulations on electric and combustion engines and even threatened on several occasions to leave F1 to devote himself to his family and endurance racing, even though his contract with Red Bull in F1 does not expire until the end of 2028.

Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio triumphed in a crash-hit Catalunya MotoGP on Sunday which saw Alex Marquez taken to hospital injured after being flipped off his bike.The race was red-flagged twice, the first time after Pedro Acosta's bike cut out and Marquez made contact with him, with his Ducati-Gresini destroyed in a horrific crash.On the first corner after the restart French rider Johann Zarco crashed and the race was red flagged again, and restarted with 12 laps remaining.Acosta started on pole and was out in front until Di Giannantonio snatched the lead with two laps remaining.Joan Mir and Fermin Aldeguer also edged ahead of Acosta, who then came to grief shortly before the end after being wiped out by Ai Ogura, who wasRace organisers said Mir, who finished second, and several other riders are under investigation for tyre pressure regulations. Fermin Aldeguer completed the podium.Overall leader Marco Bezzecchi struggled all weekend but was able to extend his advantage after his closest contender Jorge Martin suffered his fifth crash of the weekend.Raul Fernandez took out Martin after trying an aggressive move down the inside, leaving Bezzecchi, who finished sixth, 13 points ahead.Di Giannantonio hurt his hand in the first terrifying crash when the Italian was hit by a wheel from Marquez's ruined bike, but recovered to claim his first MotoGP win in three years."I'm so happy. But first of all I was really worried about all the riders who crashed," said Di Giannantonio."Today has not been an easy day for everybody. I really hope that Alex (Marquez) is fine. We've been really lucky."We know that our sport is amazing. We try to give an amazing show, we are humans, we are in danger."Alex Marquez, who triumphed at last year's Catalan Grand Prix and also won the sprint on Saturday, was pushing leader Acosta when the accident happened.Acosta lost speed because of a technical issue and Marquez hit his bike, veering off the track into a terrible crash before being taken to hospital.Last weekend Alex Marquez's older brother Marc, the reigning champion, was injured after another violent crash at Le Mans.The second major incident was a collision involving Zarco, Luca Marini and Pecco Bagnaia, with Zarco taken by ambulance for medical checks.

Qatar’s Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah and his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera won all six demanding special stages to move into a commanding lead after the first leg of the Jordan Rally.The Autotek Motorsport Skoda Fabia RS driver was in a class of his own on the third round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) and had built up an advantage of 1min 12.8sec at the night halt.Al-Attiyah said: “It was a good feeling all day and we won every stage. We have a good gap now, a good lead. Now we try to keep going like this. We pushed from the morning and we took a good time. We managed the times this afternoon and will try and do the same tomorrow. We sent the data to the engineer just to check everything is okay.”Stages were held in the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea areas, but Oman’s Abdullah al-Rawahi and Ata al-Hmoud admitted that their choice of medium tyres was a mistake for the opening loop of three stages in their Oman Rally Team Skoda Fabia RS. The Omani trailed al-Attiyah by 51.4 seconds at the midday regroup and was unable to grab any time back in the afternoon.Saudi Arabia’s Hamza Bakhashab is tackling a first full programme of MERC rallies in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 supported by Jameel Motorsport. He and Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore settled into a comfortable third position.Jordan’s Shaker Jweihan was the dominant force in MERC2 at the first two rounds in the winter and opened his account on home gravel in similar fashion with Mustafa Juma in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. He managed his pace perfectly to conserve the car, avoided rocks thrown on to the racing line by the Rally2 cars running ahead and held fifth place.One of the drives of the day came from Palestine’s Hamadeh Uda. He teamed up with Zeid Abu Zeid in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and climbed to seventh place.Mohammed al-Marri had the bragging rights over Qatari team-mate Rashid al-Muhannadi in the battle between the two Peugeot 208 Rally 4s entered by the QMMF. Al-Marri finished the day eighth ahead of the Jordanian duo of Shadi Shaban and Samer Issa. Al-Muhannadi was 11th.Saturday’s schedule consists of two runs through the Panorama (16.95km), Suwayma (11.12km) and Rawda (26.97km) specials before the ceremonial finish takes place in the HoverUp Park to the north of the Dead Sea. The second pass through Rawda will also act as the Power Stage with additional points available for the fastest crews.
