The Traffic Week 2026 kicked off yesterday through a traffic awareness exhibition organised by the Ministry of Interior (MoI), represented by the General Directorate of Traffic, at Place Vendome Mall, with the participation of relevant entities. The event aims to enhance road safety and promote a culture of safe road use. The exhibition was inaugurated by Director General of Traffic Brigadier Jabr Ali al-Kubaisi, in the presence of Director of the Non-Communicable Disease Prevention Programmes Department at the Ministry of Public Health Sheikh Dr Mohammed bin Hamad al-Thani, along with several directors, officers from the MoI, and representatives of participating entities. The exhibition brings together the 38th Unified GCC Traffic Week under the theme “I Cross Safely”, in addition to World Traffic Day and Arab Traffic Week under the theme “Slow Down... We Are Waiting for You”. The events will continue until Friday and include awareness and interactive activities to promote understanding of traffic laws and road etiquette. Brigadier Jabr Ali al-Kubaisi emphasised that the alignment of these three occasions strengthens awareness efforts and supports initiatives to reduce accidents and protect lives. He noted that the development of traffic services aligns with the MoI’s strategic goal of enhancing service quality. Traffic services available through the “Metrash” application have reached 85 services, with more than 552,000 transactions completed in 2025, reflecting the expansion and efficiency of digital services. The Director General of Traffic also voiced his appreciation to the participating entities for their co-operation and role in supporting awareness efforts, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility that begins with compliance with the law, and that respecting the road is a form of respecting human life. 

The Ministry of Culture has announced that the 35th edition of the Doha International Book Fair (DIBF) will open on May 14 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, running until May 23 with the participation of 36 countries, 515 publishing houses and 910 booths.This year's fair will showcase a wide range of publications and include participation from ministries, government institutions, and embassies of friendly and allied nations.His Excellency Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture Dr Ghanem bin Mubarak al-Ali described the fair as a milestone in the country's cultural development, embodying a national vision focused on human development and intellectual growth. He said it serves as a vital platform bringing together diverse perspectives and creative talents, providing opportunities for cultural exchange and reinforcing the book's role in shaping societal awareness.He affirmed the ministry's commitment to organising high-quality events that consolidate cultural values and keep pace with global transformations, thereby supporting development and strengthening national identity. The continuation of the event, he added, reflects the state's commitment to initiatives that elevate the cultural landscape and provide a stimulating environment for creativity, "especially since investing in knowledge remains the most important option for a more prosperous future".Al-Ali noted the great attention Qatar pays to the fair despite the current circumstances in the region, citing its significant role in spreading culture and knowledge.Director of the Libraries Department at the Ministry of Culture and DIBF Director Jassim Ahmed al-Buainain said the 35th edition comes at a pivotal moment in the region's history, under exceptional circumstances that have only strengthened the organisers' resolve to uphold its cultural mission.He explained that holding the fair today transcends being merely a periodic cultural event, becoming "a message of resilience" that affirms Qatar, both its leadership and its people, places knowledge above all else. "The book is a weapon that never fails its owner, and reading is the bridge to a more secure and stable future, ensuring that Doha remains an inextinguishable cultural beacon," he said."Culture is the impregnable shield in times of crisis. We are aware of the magnitude of the current challenges, and we at the Ministry of Culture believe that the true response to violence lies in spreading enlightenment, deepening awareness, and elevating human thought," al-Buainain added.Sideline events will include cultural seminars, lectures and workshops, alongside the Doha International Book Fair Award for Qatari and international publishers and authors. Particular attention will be paid to children and young adults, with dedicated spaces for prominent children's publishers and interactive activities to encourage reading.First launched in 1972 under the auspices of Qatar National Library, the fair was held biennially until 2002 before becoming annual. It will be open daily from 9am to 10pm, except Fridays (3pm to 10pm). Since 2010, a different country has been selected each year as guest of honour, beginning with the US.. 

The Al-Jasra Cultural and Social Club, affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, organised an awareness lecture titled “The masks of the psyche. When the mind protects us to persevere”. The lecture was presented by Prof Abeer al-Jibawi, a psychologist and trainer specialising in behavioural intervention, psychological support, and educational training. Prof al-Jibawi holds a master’s degree in educational psychology from Damascus University in Syria. The lecture was attended by a number of people interested in psychological and cultural matters. Prof al-Jibawi began her lecture by posing a question inspired by the saying of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him): “Whoever says that Muhammad has died, I will strike off his head.” She questioned whether this statement reflected his true character, known for its justice and mercy, or whether it was an exceptional psychological response imposed by the shock of the event. Through this example, she illustrated how a person can behave contrary to their nature under the influence of intense psychological pressure. She emphasised that individuals face numerous daily struggles in their pursuit of a more stable and peaceful life. She noted that accumulated pressures and painful traumas can sometimes exceed an individual’s capacity to cope, leading to a state of psychological and physical tension manifested as physical pain, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty in breathing, as well as mental confusion, poor concentration, and a persistent feeling of anxiety, fear, and exhaustion. She explained that when an individual reaches a point beyond their capacity to endure, they may unconsciously resort to primitive response patterns such as fight or flight, or even freezing. However, social and moral constraints often prevent the direct expression of these emotions, prompting the mind to devise defence mechanisms to protect itself from psychological collapse. She clarified that these mechanisms are known in psychology as unconscious psychological defence mechanisms, which allow repressed emotions to emerge indirectly and in a more socially acceptable manner. She pointed out that these mechanisms vary in their maturity and the benefits they provide to the individual. 

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has announced revised school hours at government institutions, taking effect from Sunday, May 3, until June 3. Under the temporary timetable, the school day will begin at 7am across all levels.  Dismissal times will vary by stage: kindergartens will close at 12:00, primary schools at 12:30pm, and preparatory and secondary schools at 12:45pm on most days of the week.  In a statement, the ministry said the adjustment is designed to better align the school day with seasonal weather conditions as temperatures rise across the country. It added that the change will not affect the number of teaching periods, ensuring academic requirements remain unchanged.  Administrative and teaching staff will follow a slightly extended schedule, working from 7am to 1:15pm to maintain the smooth running of schools and continuity of learning.  The revised timetable comes as students prepare for end-of-term examinations, which are scheduled to begin on June 4, in line with the official academic calendar for the 2025-2026 school year. Authorities said the measure forms part of broader efforts to safeguard student wellbeing while maintaining educational standards during the hotter months.

Qatar's Ministry of Municipality has unveiled a new package of electronic services for the Urban Planning Affairs sector, marking a further step in the country's ongoing digital transformation efforts.In a statement shared on platform X, the ministry said the services are now available on its official website, allowing users to complete a range of land-related transactions remotely and at any time.The newly introduced services include procedures linked to land administration, such as removing restrictive conditions, registering condition-bound land in the names of heirs, converting land between regulatory systems, and transferring restrictive conditions. Users can also apply for replacement title deeds and follow up on land management procedures online.Additional features cover surveying services, including access to survey reports and the numbering of streets, intersections, squares, and parks.According to the ministry, beneficiaries can access these services by logging in through the National Authentication System (NAS), selecting the required service, submitting necessary data, and uploading relevant documents. Applications can then be tracked through the user's personal account.Officials say the initiative is aimed at simplifying and standardizing land-related procedures, reducing the need for in-person visits and paper documentation, and strengthening digital integration between government entities.The move is part of broader efforts to enhance user experience and support Qatar's long-term digital development strategy. 

Qatar is maintaining active communication with all concerned international and regional parties, including the United States, to monitor developments and support efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis, the country's top foreign ministry spokesman said Tuesday.Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' weekly media briefing, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson Dr Majed bin Mohamed al-Ansari threw Qatar's full weight behind Pakistan's mediation efforts, describing them as a critical pathway toward de-escalation. He cautioned against drawing premature conclusions about the outcome of current negotiations, noting that Gulf states, including Qatar, are in near-daily contact with various stakeholders given the crisis's direct impact on regional security and stability."The international community is backing these efforts and remains hopeful for their success," he said.On Iran, al-Ansari revealed that during the most recent call between His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Qatar urged Tehran to halt its attacks on countries in the region and pursue a peaceful solution. He added that beyond that call, there has been no official direct communication between Qatar and Iran.Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, al-Ansari issued a stark warning that any disruption or closure of the vital waterway would transform the crisis from a regional into a global one, given its centrality to energy supplies and international trade."The consequences would be felt not only in energy markets but also in households and essential services worldwide, even in countries thousands of kilometres away," he said. He stressed that keeping the strait open is a shared international responsibility, reaffirming Qatar's commitment to its role as a reliable global energy partner and its continued coordination to ensure maritime security and market stability.Al-Ansari praised the Qatari Armed Forces for protecting the country during hostilities that preceded the ceasefire, while reiterating support for international efforts to consolidate the truce and achieve a comprehensive settlement. He cautioned, however, that it remains too early to predict the long-term sustainability of the ceasefire, as this depends on the commitment of the parties involved. Should an agreement prove elusive, he said, Qatar supports extending the ceasefire rather than risking a return to escalation, warning that renewed conflict would have far-reaching consequences for regional populations and the global economy.On Qatar-Pakistan ties, al-Ansari described the relationship as historic and strategic, rooted in long-standing brotherhood and extensive bilateral co-operation. He stressed that developing Qatar's defence partnerships is a continuous priority under all circumstances and part of a broader policy of diversifying international relations, not a response to any specific crisis.Turning to Syria, he reaffirmed Qatar's continued support for the Syrian people, noting that Doha was among the first countries to back the path toward stability there, with bilateral relations now advancing across political and economic dimensions.On Lebanon, al-Ansari condemned violations and attacks that have resulted in casualties and mass displacement, welcoming the ceasefire as an initial step toward de-escalation. He called for full adherence to the truce and a clear international stance against any violations, expressing hope that ongoing efforts would lead to a lasting agreement. He stressed that all regional crises must ultimately be resolved through negotiation. 

The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has announced the provision of technical support and a comprehensive assessment aimed at identifying structural, regulatory, institutional, and operational gaps within the financial sector of the Syria. The initiative is being carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance in Qatar.In a post on the X platform, QFFD stated that the announcement was made in the presence of the Minister of Finance of Syria, Mohammed Yosr Bernieh and the Governor of the Central Bank of Syria Abdulkader Husrieh, alongside a representative from the US Treasury.The announcement took place on the sidelines of the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings 2026, held on April 13-18 in Washington, DC.According to the QFFD, this cooperation aims to support the development of a clear, phased, and actionable reform roadmap, while also encouraging both local and international stakeholders to back implementation efforts.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has concluded its inspection campaigns on limousine companies and companies providing passenger transportation services via electronic applications.In its press release, the MOT said that the Q1 of 2026 campaigns were carried out in collaboration with relevant Ministry of Interior departments.The inspection campaigns detected 32 violations of the Law No. 8 of 2019 Regulating Road Transport and its Implementing Regulations issued by the Minister of Transport's Decision No. 13 of 2024.The new campaigns covered all areas across Qatar, with particular focus on business, service, and vital areas; something that reflects an expanding crackdown coverage and greater attention to crowded and high-business locations.With such campaigns, the MOT continues its law enforcement effort on the violating companies. It also urges all companies to follow the laws in place and obtain the necessary licenses to be able to do the business legally and avoid accountability.The MOT pays great attention to ensuring that passenger transportation companies follow all applicable laws and meet all safety requirements, while providing the highest quality of service.

Qatar University (QU), through its Social and Economic Survey Research Institute, is conducting a nationwide study titled 'Baseline Study to Estimate Food Loss and Waste in Qatar 2025' in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality. The study supports national efforts to improve food system efficiency while strengthening sustainability and food security nationwide.The study aims to measure the scale of food loss and waste across the various stages of the food supply chain in the country, beginning with production and processing and extending through distribution and consumption. The project will provide accurate scientific data by strengthening institutional collaboration among key national stakeholders, particularly QU and the Ministry of Municipality.This collaboration supports unified efforts, enhances co-ordination among institutions, and assists policymakers in developing strategies and programs to reduce food loss and waste while improving resource efficiency. Work on the project began on November 17, 2024 and is expected to continue until September 2026.The study is being implemented through a comprehensive research methodology that relies on collecting and analysing data from multiple sources to develop a reliable knowledge base to support strategic planning for food security and sustainability in Qatar.In this context, Dr Noora al-Mannai, director of the SESRI, emphasised the importance of the study, stating, “This study represents one of the key national research initiatives aligned with QU’s research priorities, particularly in the areas of sustainability, environmental protection, and food security." It also reflects the importance of collaboration among national institutions in generating knowledge and exchanging research expertise to support evidence-based policymaking.The project gains additional value through partnerships with relevant international organizations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and the United Nations Environment Programme, which enhance the quality of the research outputs and connect them to global efforts aimed at reducing food loss and waste and advancing sustainable development.”Dr Elmogiera Elawad, section head of Field Operations at SESRI, noted that the study adopts a comprehensive field-based methodology covering the entire food supply chain. This includes food production at farms, marketing and retail stages, food services in restaurants, hotels, and hospitals, and ultimately household consumption. This comprehensive coverage aims to provide an accurate assessment of food loss and waste at different stages through quantitative measurement, while also examining individuals’ attitudes, behaviours, and practices related to food waste and agricultural loss. The study will contribute to building a reliable scientific database that supports the development of effective interventions and policies to address this issue. 

The 2025-2026 winter camping season has been described as "largely successful," with high turnout of citizens and residents supported by well-organized camps and comprehensive services. Speaking to Qatar News Agency, Chair of the Winter Camping Committee at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Hamad Salem al-Nuaimi, highlighted the key achievements of this year’s season, including stronger adherence to environmental regulations, improved organizational infrastructure for campsites, and heightened awareness among campers about protecting the natural environment.He also outlined the main challenges, such as the rising number of campers placing pressure on sites and services, and some non-compliant practices at the start of the season. These were addressed through intensified inspection campaigns and the use of modern monitoring technologies to ensure compliance. Al-Nuaimi noted that the Winter Camping Committee implemented a range of measures to safeguard both the environment and camper safety. These included precise campsite allocations, protection of environmentally sensitive areas, provision and regular collection of waste containers, and strict regulations on vehicle use in desert and natural areas.He pointed out a marked improvement in compliance compared with previous seasons, attributing it to successful awareness campaigns. At the same time, he emphasized that some areas still require further organization and monitoring, with solutions under study for future seasons. Al-Nuaimi said key lessons from this season include early planning, greater reliance on digital permit systems, and strengthened partnerships with relevant authorities. The ministry is continuing to enhance oversight mechanisms and awareness programs to ensure the sustainability of Qatar's natural environment.He concluded by stressing that these combined efforts help foster a culture of environmental responsibility, urging all campers to follow regulations and contribute to the protection of Qatar's terrestrial environment as a shared responsibility. 

The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, represented by the Department of Da’wah and Religious Guidance, launched 14 new study circles for teaching Quran recitation at several Quran learning centers across the country, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote the teaching of the Holy Quran and spread a culture of care for it.In a statement, the ministry said the effort was part of its strategic plans to expand Quranic programs and provide opportunities for all segments of society to join recitation and tajweed classes based on a sound scientific methodology, under the supervision of qualified instructors.It noted that the new circles were distributed across many Quran centers located in mosques in various areas, including Ibn Atiyah Center in Abal Heeran, Al Sibtain Center and Usaid bin Hudair Center in Rawdat Al Hamama, Abu Jaafar Center in Al Thumama, Imam Khallad Center in South Al Duhail, Saad bin Zaid Center, Ubadah bin Al-Samit Center, and Mohammed Nasser Al Jafali Al Nuaimi Center in Leabaib, Sufyan Al Thawri Center in Al Ghanim Al Jadeed, Shaheen bin Ghanem Al Ghanem Center in Al Wajba, Suhaib Al Rumi Center and Abdullah bin Khabbab Center in Al Wakra, Amr bin Al Aas Center in Al Themaid, and Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah Center in Rawdat Al Jahhanniya.The Department of Da’wah and Religious Guidance stated that the circles are held four days a week, from Sunday to Wednesday, between Maghrib and Isha prayers, providing flexibility for enrollment and encouraging consistent participation.The department said that registration was available directly at the centers during session times, inviting interested individuals to enroll or contact 16577 for more information.The ministry affirmed that this initiative was part of a comprehensive vision aimed at strengthening the role of the Holy Quran in individuals' and society's lives, promoting Islamic values, and building a generation proficient in reciting the Quran. It also noted that efforts will continue to expand the number of circles and Quran centers across the country to meet the growing demand for learning the Quran.
