The Irish government was Sunday due to hold an emergency cabinet meeting to sign off on measures aimed at ending fuel cost protests that have endangered the functioning of the country's emergency services.Hauliers and agricultural contractors began a series of protests on Tuesday over spiralling petrol and diesel prices amid the Middle East war.Since then the protests have grown from slow-moving convoys on motorways and restricted access to Dublin's busiest streets, to a part blockade of Ireland's only oil refinery and restricted access to at least two other fuel depots.Finance Minister Simon Harris said later on Saturday ministers had held meetings with transport and agriculture sector representatives ahead of Sunday's meeting.The government was in the process of "finalising a significant support package to address the ongoing crisis", a government statement added.Some protests rolled into a sixth day Sunday.The government has urged the public not to panic buy as pumps at many fuel stations have run dry.Police on Saturday with the support of the armed forces deployed public order units to clear the blockade at Whitegate Refinery in southern Ireland.Irish police chief Justin Kelly said the action was taken as a last resort.The blockading of "critical national infrastructure" had "resulted in fuel shortages that are directly impacting on emergency services such as hospitals, the ambulance service, and the fire service", he said.Elsewhere, police dismantled a makeshift barrier erected by protesters blockading western Galway docks.A late-night operation also targeted the blockade of the capital Dublin's main thoroughfare O'Connell Street after multiple vehicles including tractors and lorries were removed.Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan said earlier the continuation of the protests despite the increasingly difficult situation had been "unacceptable"."While we all acknowledge the impact of higher fuel prices, and seek to minimise that impact, no groups are entitled in our republic to hold our people to ransom in such a manner," he said.In March, Dublin announced a 250 million-euro package to reduce fuel costs, notably including a diesel rebate for road haulier.There were now the "bones of an agreement" with the government, the president Ger Hyland of the Irish Road Haulage Association said on Saturday."It is a substantial package and we hope to have this over the line either late tonight or tomorrow," he added. 

Qatar Tourism chairman His Excellency Saad bin Ali al-Kharji participated in an extraordinary ministerial meeting of GCC tourism ministers, held via video conference Tuesday, to review recent regional developments and assess their potential implications for the tourism sector across member states.The ministers affirmed that the GCC tourism sector continues to operate effectively, supported by advanced infrastructure, high operational efficiency, and an integrated ecosystem that ensures continuity and stability.They also reiterated that GCC destinations remain committed to delivering safe, high-quality tourism experiences, highlighting the sector’s readiness to navigate current developments while sustaining growth. 

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, confirmed that a joint Gulf-Russian-Jordanian ministerial meeting will be held on Monday via videoconference. In a statement issued Sunday, the GCC Secretary-General said the meeting with Jordan and Russia will address and discuss the repercussions of Iranian attacks on GCC member states and Jordan, as well as the serious developments in the region and their negative impacts on the wider world.

Shareholders of Ooredoo have approved the board of directors' recommendation to distribute a cash dividend of QR0.75 per share during its Annual General Meeting, presided over Sheikh Faisal bin Thani al-Thani, chairman of Ooredoo.Addressing the meeting, Sheikh Faisal highlighted the Ooredoo Group’s continued progress in executing its strategy and strengthening its position as a leading digital infrastructure provider across the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia.Sheikh Faisal said, “2025 marked another important milestone in Ooredoo’s journey as we continued the disciplined execution of our strategy, delivering strong financial performance and further reinforcing our position as a leading provider of digital infrastructure across our markets.”“For the fourth consecutive year, we recorded strong growth across all key financial metrics, closing 2025 with record-high earnings that exceeded $1bn in normalised net profit,” he added. 

His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan al-Thani chaired the Cabinet's regular meeting held Wednesday morning at the Amiri Diwan.  Following the meeting, His Excellency Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali al-Mohannadi stated the following:  At the outset of the meeting, the Cabinet extended its highest greetings to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on the advent of the blessed month of Ramadan, praying to Almighty Allah to return this occasion to His Highness with good health and happiness, to the beloved country of Qatar and its people and residents with prosperity and growth under His Highness the Amir's wise leadership, and to the Arab and Islamic nations with security, peace and stability.  On the other hand, the Cabinet commended His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani's honouring of the winners of the Education Excellence Award in its 19th edition, as well as His Highness' patronage of the award's ceremony. This engagement is in continuation of His Highness' approach to celebrating science and scientists, and considering investment in education and scientific research, in addition to focusing on human beings, as a national and strategic choice for the country, and a fundamental pillar in Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030) and the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030.  The Cabinet also extended congratulations to the ministries and government agencies that won the Government Excellence Award in its second edition, hailing their outstanding performance that qualified them to win this prestigious award, which has contributed since its inception to developing the level of institutional performance and the quality of government services.  Afterwards, the Cabinet reviewed the topics on its agenda, as it approved the draft Cabinet decision to amend the organisation of some of the administrative units that make up the Ministry of Finance and to assign their responsibilities. The draft decision aims to strengthen the institutional and organisational framework for managing government assets, by assigning the responsibilities of preparing policies, governance frameworks, and related operational models and following up on their implementation to the Public Projects Management Department at the Ministry of Finance, in implementation of the ministry's strategy aimed at enhancing the efficiency of financial sustainability in line with the Third National Development Strategy.  The Cabinet approved the draft Cabinet decision amending some provisions of Decision No 36 of 2014 establishing the National Committee for the Customs Clearance System and trade facilitation across borders (single window). Prepared by the Ministry of Finance in co-ordination with the General Authority of Customs, the draft decision aims to strengthen the role of the committee and to enable it to carry out its tasks in accordance with the highest performance standards.  The Cabinet also decided to approve a draft agreement between the government of Qatar and the UN regarding the arrangement for the World Investment Forum 2026 in Doha, a draft agreement between the government of Qatar and the government of Tanzania regarding the elimination of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and the prevention of tax avoidance and evasion, and a draft agreement between the government of Qatar and the government of Namibia regarding the elimination of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and the prevention of tax avoidance and evasion.  The Cabinet concluded its meeting by reviewing four reports and taking the appropriate measures in their regard. The documents included the annual report on the work of the state affairs sector for 2025, the annual report on the activities of Qatar Development Bank for 2025, a report and protocol on the outcomes of hosting the meetings of the third session of the Qatari-Turkmen Joint Commission for Economic and Trade Co-operation (Doha — November 2025), and a report and protocol on the outcomes of hosting the meetings of the fourth session of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee between the government of Qatar and the government of Azerbaijan (Doha—November 2025).

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani took part in the opening of the second edition of the global investor meeting, held on the sidelines of Web Summit Qatar 2026.  During the event, he also met with founders of high-growth companies and international investors, discussing opportunities for collaboration and innovation. The global investor meeting is an initiative organised by the Government Communications Office in co-operation with the Qatar Investment Authority.  It aims to bring together leading global investors and technology company founders to establish strategic partnerships and support economic growth in Qatar and the wider region. This year's edition brings together a select group of entrepreneurs and investors from 16 countries, representing around 40 companies and 50 investment institutions.

Organisers of the Doha Diamond League Meeting on May 8 have confirmed that athletes who set new meeting records at the 2026 event will be awarded a $5000 bonus, an innovative concept that was first introduced in 2025.The Diamond League series broke new ground in 2025 with $9.84mn awarded in prize money across the series as a whole, the largest prize pool in Diamond League history.While the introduction of meeting record bonus payments in Doha provided another welcome incentive for athletes, the high standard of past-performances meant that only Bahrain’s Olympic silver medallist Salwa Eid Naser came close. Her winning time of 49.83 in the women’s 400m matched the meeting record set by Allyson Felix of USA in 2008, but it wasn’t quick enough for the outright best required to meet the criteria for the $5000 bonus payment.Mohammed al-Fadala, Qatar Athletics Federation president, said: “The Doha Meeting has established itself as one of the leading Wanda Diamond League fixtures and feedback from our athletes, their coaches and their managers, repeatedly tells us that our exceptional hospitality is a key factor in them wanting to return.“As Mutaz Barshim said in last year’s press conference, track and field isn’t an easy job, so it’s very important that we value our athletes and take care of them, as well as providing the perfect stage for top quality competition. By continuing to award bonus payments for new meeting records we are incentivising athletes to perform, but we are also rewarding them for their efforts.“Mutaz acknowledged that change is positive and that as a meeting, and across the sport as a whole, we were moving in the right direction. We in Doha remain committed to innovation and change and that remains crucial if we’re to continue to grow our reputation and profile globally.”Earlier, multiple Olympic, world and European champion Mondo Duplantis of Sweden confirmed he will compete in Doha. The 26-year-old, a two-time Olympic gold medallist and six-time world champion, is also the meeting record holder in Doha with 6.02m, set in 2022. He arrives following another standout season, having broken the world record for the 14th time, most recently with 6.30m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.Duplantis is unbeaten in this Doha Diamond League fixture, but it’s been far from plain sailing. The 2020 event was postponed due to the pandemic (he won the rescheduled competition with a best of 5.82m), while in 2022 the men’s pole vault was delayed by one day and moved indoors due to high winds. Duplantis cleared 6.02m for the win on that occasion – a mark that still stands as the meeting record.“We’ve had a couple of challenges in the past for sure, but I’ve always loved coming to Doha,” said the 2025 World Athlete of the Year. “Last year was amazing for me. I ticked off a couple of really big goals, stuff that was high up on my bucket list, but my hunger and motivation is still 100% there. My training has gone well over the winter and I’m looking forward to competing indoors – it’s important to have something new to aim for, and for me, I want to successfully defend my European title. Doha will follow and it’s the perfect meet to kick off my outdoor season. I definitely prefer the warm weather to the cold, so hopefully conditions will be conducive to jumping high, challenging my meeting record, and setting a solid benchmark – and new goals – for the year ahead.”The azzraty Doha Meeting is the opening meeting of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League. The series comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field across four different continents. It concludes with a single final across two days in Brussels on September 4 and 5.

The governor of the Qatar Central Bank His Excellency Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, who is also chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), held a meeting on Wednesday with Joshua Fink, the founder of Luma Group, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2026 in Davos, Switzerland. During the meeting, they reviewed key global financial and investment developments.

Doha will host the Executive Office Meeting of the Arab Weightlifting Federation (AWF) on Sunday, followed by its electoral meeting, on the margins of the Qatar Weightlifting Federation's (QWF) concomitant hosting of three international, Arab, and Asian championships until Dec. 27, 2025. The three tournaments include the 10th Qatar International Cup 2025, the Arab Championships for youth, juniors, and seniors, and the West Asia Championships for the same age categories. This combined sporting event reflects the advanced standing Qatar occupies on the global map of championship organization. The Executive Office meeting will discuss a host of critical matters on the agenda, foremost among them the review of reports from coaching and organizational committees, monitoring the progress of developmental programs implemented during the past period, evaluating the Arab championships recently organized by AWF, and identifying key positives and challenges encountered in implementing coaching and administrative plans. The meeting will also address the AWF's strategy for the upcoming period, particularly regarding the expansion of Arab participation in weightlifting championships, supporting national federations in coaching and organizational matters, promoting talent discovery and refinement programs, and exploring avenues of collaboration with the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). This is in addition to related sports bodies, contributing to raising the coaching level of Arab weightlifters and strengthening their capacity to compete in continental and international events. Following the conclusion of the Executive Office meeting, the AWF, chaired by HE Mohamed bin Yousef Al Mannai, will hold its electoral meeting to elect a new Board of Directors to lead the Federation during the forthcoming phase, in accordance with the Statutes and approved regulations. The meeting will be attended by representatives of member Arab federations in a democratic atmosphere reflecting the Federation's commitment to transparency and sound governance. The electoral meeting is expected to witness positive competition among candidates, amid broad aspirations to continue the development and elevation of weightlifting, and to enhance its status on the Arab and global sports stage, particularly in light of the successes achieved by Arab weightlifters in recent continental and global championships. The election of a new Board of Directors marks a significant milestone in the Federation's institutional journey, reflecting its continuous pursuit to develop the weightlifting system across the Arab region.
