US President Donald Trump will take part in a G7 working session with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in France on Tuesday, but no bilateral meeting between the two is scheduled, a senior administration official said."On Tuesday morning, President Trump will participate in a working session with G7 leaders and President Zelensky of Ukraine," the official told reporters Saturday on the customary condition of anonymity.The G7 summit will take place in Evian on June 15-17, and Trump is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings on its sidelines with French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and India, the official said.Trump is also scheduled to dine at the Versailles palace west of Paris with Macron on Wednesday evening, after the summit wraps up.The dinner is a way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence in a "landmark of Franco-American friendship where the treaty establishing the independence of the US was signed in 1783," according to Macron's office.Trump has shifted his attention away from efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February, igniting another conflict that has been under a fragile ceasefire since April."Obviously, President Zelensky is gonna be at the session that we're doing. They very well may meet with each other on the sidelines," the official said, stressing that a formal bilateral meeting was not currently on Trump's G7 agenda.The official said the 79-year-old billionaire Republican was the "only" world leader capable of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, but did not elaborate.The status of US-Iran talks aimed at ending the Middle East war will be a dominant concern at the G7 summit.One topic of discussion among attendees could be the participation of France and Britain in mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the senior administration official.The waterway off Iran, a critical trade route for oil and fertilizer, has been largely closed to shipping due to the war.The US official sought to downplay tensions between Trump and his allies regarding the US commitment to Nato — an alliance whose leaders will be well-represented in France."When we have private conversations with the governments of our Nato allies... it's a very easy conversation. It's not at all as its kind of hysterically presented in the press," the official said."We are very happy with the some of the burden-shifting that's going on, and we need to see more of it."Another US official praised France for placing trade imbalances on the summit agenda — a central theme for Trump, who has launched a global protectionist offensive centered on aggressive import tariffs on friends and foes alike.According to the White House, the US president intends to discuss artificial intelligence, immigration, innovation, and energy with his partners. The G7 comprises Germany, Canada, the US, France, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.Trump has advocated for including Russia and thereby restoring the former G8 format. 

Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino will open her bid to regain the Diamond League title in the women’s 400m in Doha on June 19.Dominican Republic star Paulino has dominated the 400m in the Diamond League in recent years, claiming 18 victories in athletics’ premier one-day series and winning the series title three years in a row from 2022 to 2024.Last season, she picked up victories in Paris, Monaco and Silesia before a surprise defeat to Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser at the final in Zurich. She returns to action at the Doha Meeting next month, where she hopes to make a winning start to her 2026 campaign.“I’m looking forward to returning to Doha where the crowd noise is incredible and the conditions are great for fast running,” said the three-time Diamond League Final winner who has won on both her previous outings to the Qatar Sports Club in 2022 (51.20) and 2023 (50.51).“My winter training has gone well and although the meeting record of 49.83 might be a tough one to beat so early in the season, every race is a challenge and an opportunity to grow. I’m proud to be an Olympic and world champion, but it’s important that I continue to learn and work hard every day to become an even better version of myself so that I can help inspire and motivate the younger generation.”Doha is the seventh leg of the 2026 Diamond League, which began in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 16 and ends at the two-day series final in Brussels on September 4-5. The series unites the biggest names in track and field in some of the world’s most iconic arenas, crossing four continents and 15 cities over the course of the season. 

China's leader Xi Jinping met with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing on Monday, state media reported, as diplomatic efforts by several countries to formally end the Iran war drag on.The high-level meeting, reported by state news agency Xinhua, followed Sharif's talks earlier in the day with Premier Li Qiang, China's number two leader. Pakistan has emerged as a central mediator between the United States and Iran, hosting face-to-face talks last month that failed to yield a lasting agreement.Sharif was accompanied on his trip by army chief Asim Munir, Islamabad's key negotiator between the United States and Iran, Pakistan television showed on Monday.Xi praised Pakistan for "taking the initiative to play a mediating role in restoring peace in the Middle East", according to a Chinese readout of the talks between the two leaders. "Both sides should continue to maintain close communication and coordination (and) jointly oppose unilateralism and Cold War mentality," Xi said.China has played a quieter mediation role, shepherding phone calls and meetings with officials of affected Gulf countries. Sharif, speaking to Chinese leaders alongside Munir, said "the world is passing through a critical moment", Pakistan's state-run PTV channel showed."Pakistan has played a sincere role to mediate between US and Iran. Field marshal (Munir) was in Tehran and did not want to miss this great visit," Sharif said. "Things are moving in the right direction. I would like to thank China's support to promote peace," he said.Sharif kicked off his four-day official visit in Hangzhou in eastern Zhejiang province on Saturday. It follows a visit by Munir to Tehran on Friday and Saturday alongside Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi as part of mediation efforts to end the war. China has said it would work with Pakistan to "make positive contributions to the early restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East".In April, Pakistan hosted the only direct negotiations between US and Iranian officials to take place since the war began.Munir was at the centre of the action during that round of talks, greeting both delegations on their arrival and displaying bonhomie with US Vice President JD Vance.But the talks ultimately failed, with Iran accusing the United States of making "excessive demands"

His Highness The Deputy Amir and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Qatar University, Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, chaired the fourth meeting of the Board of Trustees for the 2025-2026 academic year, held this morning at the Amiri Diwan. At the beginning of the meeting, the Board reviewed the implementation of the decisions and recommendations from the third meeting of the 2025-2026 academic year, discussed the items on the agenda, and made the appropriate decisions. The Board also approved a proposal to amend the admission quotas at Qatar University, effective Fall 2027, and endorsed a proposal to restructure the Bachelor of Education program in general education.

Pope Leo XIV will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday, the Vatican said Monday, just weeks after serious criticism of the pontiff by US President Donald Trump.The private visit with the top US diplomat, who is a Catholic, will take place at 11:30 am (0930 GMT), according to a calendar published on the Vatican's media site.A Vatican source on Sunday confirmed for AFP Italian media reports that the meeting was an attempt to "thaw" relations between the leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics and the US government.Rubio is also expected to meet Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani while in Rome, according to an Italian government source on Sunday. Rubio had also asked for a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, one of Trump's closest European allies, against whom he turned after she defended the pope, the source added.Leo has increasingly spoken out against international conflicts and the politicians waging them, and last month issued his most forthright critique yet of the Trump administration's actions.Thursday's visit will be the second time that the pope and Rubio have met. The secretary of state was received at the Vatican with US Vice President JD Vance in May 2025, just days after Leo was elected pope. 

Qatar Chamber is inviting its members to attend the General Assembly Meeting on May 11, 2026, a press statement announced Monday. The AGM will be presided over by Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani. According to the agenda, the AGM will review the board of directors’ report on activities for the year ending December 31, 2025; the auditor’s report and final accounts; approve the 2026 budget; discharge the board; and appoint a new auditor for 2026. The chamber stated that if a quorum is not met at the first meeting, a second meeting will be held on June 4, 2026. The second meeting will be valid regardless of the number of attendees. The chamber also stated that only members who have settled their subscription fees up to the date of the first meeting on May 11, 2026, are eligible to attend. Registration will open two hours before the meeting. It clarified that individual establishments must be represented either by the owner personally or by an authorised representative whose name is registered in the commercial register.As for companies, the meeting must be attended by one of the authorised signatories on behalf of the company. 

The Irish government was Sunday due to hold an emergency cabinet meeting to sign off on measures aimed at ending fuel cost protests that have endangered the functioning of the country's emergency services.Hauliers and agricultural contractors began a series of protests on Tuesday over spiralling petrol and diesel prices amid the Middle East war.Since then the protests have grown from slow-moving convoys on motorways and restricted access to Dublin's busiest streets, to a part blockade of Ireland's only oil refinery and restricted access to at least two other fuel depots.Finance Minister Simon Harris said later on Saturday ministers had held meetings with transport and agriculture sector representatives ahead of Sunday's meeting.The government was in the process of "finalising a significant support package to address the ongoing crisis", a government statement added.Some protests rolled into a sixth day Sunday.The government has urged the public not to panic buy as pumps at many fuel stations have run dry.Police on Saturday with the support of the armed forces deployed public order units to clear the blockade at Whitegate Refinery in southern Ireland.Irish police chief Justin Kelly said the action was taken as a last resort.The blockading of "critical national infrastructure" had "resulted in fuel shortages that are directly impacting on emergency services such as hospitals, the ambulance service, and the fire service", he said.Elsewhere, police dismantled a makeshift barrier erected by protesters blockading western Galway docks.A late-night operation also targeted the blockade of the capital Dublin's main thoroughfare O'Connell Street after multiple vehicles including tractors and lorries were removed.Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan said earlier the continuation of the protests despite the increasingly difficult situation had been "unacceptable"."While we all acknowledge the impact of higher fuel prices, and seek to minimise that impact, no groups are entitled in our republic to hold our people to ransom in such a manner," he said.In March, Dublin announced a 250 million-euro package to reduce fuel costs, notably including a diesel rebate for road haulier.There were now the "bones of an agreement" with the government, the president Ger Hyland of the Irish Road Haulage Association said on Saturday."It is a substantial package and we hope to have this over the line either late tonight or tomorrow," he added. 

Qatar Tourism chairman His Excellency Saad bin Ali al-Kharji participated in an extraordinary ministerial meeting of GCC tourism ministers, held via video conference Tuesday, to review recent regional developments and assess their potential implications for the tourism sector across member states.The ministers affirmed that the GCC tourism sector continues to operate effectively, supported by advanced infrastructure, high operational efficiency, and an integrated ecosystem that ensures continuity and stability.They also reiterated that GCC destinations remain committed to delivering safe, high-quality tourism experiences, highlighting the sector’s readiness to navigate current developments while sustaining growth. 

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, confirmed that a joint Gulf-Russian-Jordanian ministerial meeting will be held on Monday via videoconference. In a statement issued Sunday, the GCC Secretary-General said the meeting with Jordan and Russia will address and discuss the repercussions of Iranian attacks on GCC member states and Jordan, as well as the serious developments in the region and their negative impacts on the wider world.
