Liverpool's owners have agreed to sell a minority stake in the Premier League club to a consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.US-based Fenway Sports Group, owners of the 20-time English champions, said they had agreed the deal with 1892 Holdings, a consortium led by British-Indian millionaire Amit Bhatia and also featuring Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, who co-founded Facebook.According to reports, the stake acquired by the consortium is around one-third of the club. American tycoon Bezos is the fourth-richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $256bn.Bezos is not expected to join Liverpool's expanded board of directors, which will reportedly feature Bhatia as the Premier League club's vice-chairman. But Bryan Baum, founder of the venture capital firm K5 Sports, which Bezos is using to invest in Liverpool, is set to become an Anfield board member, alongside Saverin's wife Elaine."Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club's long-term interests in mind. That approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders around the world," FSG president Mike Gordon said Friday."As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special."The deal is believed to place Liverpool's value at between £5bn ($6.8bn) and £6bn. It is Bezos's first investment in a sports team after he was previously linked with purchasing NFL franchises Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, has extensive experience of football boardrooms after serving as QPR co-owner for 18 years before stepping away from the English Championship club once his Liverpool link became public knowledge."We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG. We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield," Bhatia said."To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come."FSG underlined they would retain control of decision-making at Anfield, saying the stake sale would "support Liverpool's long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology, and investment"The consortium partners will work with FSG and the club's leadership team to evaluate opportunities that enhance the club's objectives on and off the pitch. FSG continues to retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool."FSG bought Liverpool for £300mn in 2010 and sold a minority stake of around three percent to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity three years ago.Liverpool start their Premier League campaign at Newcastle on August 23. They are looking to bounce back from a disappointing fifth place finish in the top-flight last season.That failure led to Arne Slot being sacked as Liverpool manager just 12 months after he masterminded the club's Premier League title triumph in his first season after succeeding Jurgen Klopp. With several weeks until the Premier League transfer window closes, the new investment could be a boost to Reds boss Andoni Iraola as he looks to strengthen his squad for the new season.Liverpool have so far spent around £94mn on signing Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz since the end of last term.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the draw mechanism for the league stage of the AFC Champions League Elite 2026-27, with the draw scheduled for August 18 at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.The new season will feature 32 clubs in an expanded format for the first time since the competition was restructured, with 16 teams from the West region and 16 from the East. The clubs in each region will be divided into four levels, with each team playing eight matches against eight different opponents, including four at home and four away.The top eight teams from each region will advance to the round of 16, which will be held from March 1 to 17. The competition will then move to Saudi Arabia for the combined finals, featuring the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final from April 23 to May 1.In the West region, the first level includes defending champions Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia, Al Ain of the UAE, Qatar's Al Sadd and Iran's Esteghlal.The second level features Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, Uzbekistan's Nasaf Qarshi, Iraq's Al Quwa Al Jawiya and UAE side Shabab Al Ahli.The third level consists of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal, Qatar's Al Gharafa, Iran's Tractor and UAE side Al Wasl.The fourth level includes Saudi Arabia's Al Qadsiah and Al Ittihad, Qatar's Al Shamal and Uzbekistan's Pakhtakor.According to the AFC's draw mechanism, clubs will not be assigned eight opponents individually. Instead, the draw will use a fixed grid comprising four columns - A, B, C and D - in the West region.The four first-level clubs will be drawn into positions A1, B1, C1 and D1, followed by the second-level clubs into A2, B2, C2 and D2, and the same process will be applied to the third and fourth levels.The AFC said the draw will protect clubs from the same national association by ensuring they are not placed in adjacent columns, preventing them from facing each other in the league stage.The principle of sporting fairness will also be applied to limit the repetition of home or away match patterns between clubs from specific national associations.An electronic draw system will apply these restrictions and prevent any conflicts that could interrupt the draw process. 

Manchester City's new signing Elliot Anderson said he is determined to justify his hefty transfer fee and hopes to make an immediate impact when the FA Cup winners face Premier League champions Arsenal in Sunday's Community Shield.The 23-year-old joined City from Nottingham Forest in July in a deal British media reported could rise to 116 million pounds ($156.66 million), making him the second-most expensive British player."I'm over the moon," Anderson told reporters after his first training session under new manager Enzo Maresca. "The lads have welcomed me really well and training went well."The England international could make his debut against Arsenal just days after arriving at the club. The midfielder said he was aware of the scrutiny attached to his price tag but was determined to let his performances do the talking."It is a chance to win a trophy in your first week," Anderson said. "I want to show everyone what I can do. I try not to focus on it too much, but I'm sure over the next season I can show people what I do best."Anderson said Maresca's attention to detail had already stood out in their early sessions together and expects to learn more about his role in the coming weeks. While he sees himself primarily as a box-to-box midfielder, Anderson believes he can offer more."I've got a bit of everything. I can defend well, I can attack, so I'll just try and give everything I've got to help the club," he said.Manchester City, who finished second last season in the Premier League, will begin their campaign against Bournemouth on August 23.Man City sign Argentina goalkeeper Rulli from MarseilleMeanwhile, Manchester City have signed Argentina international goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille on a two-year deal, both clubs announced. The 34-year-old will serve as City's number-two goalkeeper behind Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma."This is an amazing opportunity for me and one I had to grasp," said Rulli, who returns for a second spell at City having spent the 2016/17 season at the Etihad without making a first team appearance."When the chance to join Manchester City comes along you have to go for it. Everyone knows what an impressive club this is. City's success over a long time has been impressive. Everyone I have spoken to about City said I had to join them because they are a club with incredibly high standards. My job now is to train hard, get to know the players and staff and do everything I can to reach my best level."Rulli has won eight caps for Argentina and was in the squad that won the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America and reached last month's World Cup final in which they lost to Spain.He previously played for European clubs including Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Montpellier and Ajax. He famously scored a penalty in Villarreal's 2021 Europa League final victory over Manchester United, before denying opposite number David de Gea to claim the trophy 11-10 in the shootout.Having been fined 10 million euros for failing to meet UEFA break-even targets, Marseille have to sell players this summer to balance its books. Marseille's fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 during the 2025-2026 season also means the club will not participate in the lucrative Champions League.On Tuesday, Marseille announced the departure of another Argentine player, defender Facundo Medina, to Bayer Leverkusen after just one season with the club.Marseille had previously parted ways with some of its highest earners, such as English forward Mason Greenwood, who left for Fenerbahce, and Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who headed to Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña. 

The Qatar Stars League (QSL) announced the QSL 2 League schedule for 2026-2027 season, which will kick off on August 23, 2026, with 12 teams competing: Al Khor, Al Markhiya, Al Bidda, Mesaimeer, Muaither, Al Kharaitiyat, Umm Salal, Al Waab, NextGen (Al Rayyan), Etihad Al Gharafa, Al Shamal Future and Qatar Under-23 National Team. The announcement of schedule is part of QSL’s preparations for the new season, ensuring that competitions are ready according to the highest organizational and technical standards. As part of QSL’s commitment towards providing the best technical and organizational conditions for the start of season, the first three rounds of matches will be played in airconditioned stadiums, providing an ideal environment for players and fans, and enhancing the quality of competition during this time of year. The first three rounds of matches will be hosted by Al Thumama Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium and Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Venues and dates for the fourth and subsequent rounds will be announced later.

As part of the Qatar Stars League’s (QSL) commitment to ongoing communication, co-ordination and co-operation with clubs, and aligning with preparations and arrangements for new 2026-2027 football season, QSL’s Competitions and Football Development Department held a Co-ordination Meeting with coaches and captains of Doha Bank Stars League and QSL 2 clubs at the Aspire Academy. The meeting was attended by Dr. Ahmed Khellil Abbassi, Executive Director of Competitions and Football Development, Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Al Abdullah, Director of Professional Players Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Salman Al Adsani, Director of Competitions, Mr. Antero Henrique, Sporting Director at QSL, and representatives from National Teams and Referees Departments, Aspetar and Aspire. The meeting was held as part of preparations ahead of the start of new football season and aimed to enhance development through co-operation and co-ordination between QSL, clubs’ technical staff and players. The meeting also addressed several key aspects of competition, including a review of regulations and organisational guidelines for the new season, and operational mechanisms designed to ensure optimal conditions for a successful tournament. The meeting discussed new season’s calendar, aiming to achieve a balance between match schedule and preparation periods. The importance of morning training sessions in enhancing player readiness was also discussed, along with best practices in recovery and nutrition. These practices are crucial for improving player performance and minimising fatigue and injuries. The meeting also explored ways to optimise training intensity to meet competitive demands and enhance players’ technical and physical readiness throughout the season. Commenting on the meeting, Dr. Abbassi said, “I extend my thanks and appreciation to all technical, administrative and medical staff, and players for their vital and important roles, in addition to our partners (Qatar Football Association,  Aspetar, Aspire, National Teams Department, Referees) as they are a fundamental element in implementing the league’s development plan, and are among the main pillars of our football system.”

The Arab League warned of the grave danger posed by Iran's criminal and reckless attacks against a number of Arab states, particularly in the Gulf region.In a statement Saturday, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy described the attacks as an attempt to widen the scope of the conflict and drive the region towards greater instability and insecurity.The secretary-general expressed the League's unequivocal rejection of this unjustified Iranian aggression, noting that the escalating pattern of Iran's blatant and reprehensible attacks against Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar and Kuwait, which have targeted critical infrastructure and vital facilities, as well as its repeated attacks on the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, reflects an aggressive course of conduct that cannot be tolerated or accepted.These actions demonstrate Tehran's continued reliance on policies founded on grave miscalculations and a flawed reading of regional realities, while constituting a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of Arab states, international law, and the principles of good neighbourliness, Fahmy stressed.He emphasised that any attack against an Arab state constitutes an attack on Arab national security and the collective interests of the Arab nation.The Arab League secretary-general urged Iran to de-escalate immediately, cease its attacks without delay, refrain from fuelling tensions, spreading instability, and threatening maritime security through its proxies in the region, and to return to the path of negotiations in full compliance with its international obligations and international law.Fahmy reaffirmed the League's full solidarity with the Arab states concerned and its unwavering support for them in confronting the serious challenges threatening their sovereignty, interests, and Arab national security.He also asserted the League's support for all measures taken by Arab states to safeguard their security and stability. 

A Sri Lankan court ordered Friday that the Indian co-owner of a Lanka Premier League (LPL) team, charged with attempting to bribe five players for match-fixing, be held in prison till the end of the month.Manjot Kalra was arrested at a hotel in the capital, Colombo as he was allegedly "about to pay" a player 9.5 million rupees ($28,700), inspector Supun Vidanage of the Sports Investigation Unit said.Four other Sri Lankan players were also approached by Kalra 10 days before his arrest Vidanage added.An accomplice of Kalra will also remain in police custody until the end of the month pending further investigation.Sri Lanka Cricket, the governing body of the sport on the island, said the domestic T20 tournament would go ahead as planned on Friday night in the capital. KALRA CO-OWNER OF JAFFNAThe opening match of the tournament, now in its sixth edition, is between the Jaffna and Galle teams. Kalra is a co-owner of the Jaffna team."Sri Lanka Cricket reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of the tournament and will not tolerate any form of corruption, misconduct or foul play by any stakeholder associated with the league," Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.Previous LPL tournaments have also been marred with allegations of corruption.Bangladesh-born Tamim Rahman, owner of Dambulla Thunders, admitted in January to attempting to influence a player and organise match fixing.Rahman was handed a four-year jail term and suspended for five years. He was also fined 24 million rupees.The conviction was in line with a strict 2019 law aimed at preventing corruption in sport in Sri Lanka. 

Josh Kerr is hoping hitting peak physical form blends with minute planning and the latest in running shoe innovation to help propel him to a world record in the men's mile.Kerr has chosen Saturday's Diamond League meet in London to have a tilt at the 3min 43.13sec set by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj in Rome back in 1999.The 28-year-old US-based Scot, 2023 world 1,500m champion and Olympic silver medallist, currently holds the British record over the mile with 3:45.34, set in Eugene in 2024."It is the most historic track record, but the current mark... has not been bettered this century," Kerr said in a series of all-encompassing articles for British newspaper The Daily Telegraph laying bare his approach to the race."It's too long. It's time to bring this record into the modern era through training, technology and effort."I have won three world titles and two Olympic medals but joining Sir Roger (Bannister), as well as middle-distance legends Steve Ovett, Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram on the roll call of mile record holders, would be the biggest moment of my career."Kerr's bid to break the 27-year-old record is built on a combination of factors, not least shoe technology.The required pace to break the record involves an athlete running an average of 16.2 mph or 55.5sec laps.Kerr, known as being highly selective in the races he runs, wears Brooks running shoes, and the Scot contends the latest pair he'll be donning, after months in the design lab, "will change athletics"."Night and day. The biggest leap in innovation that I have experienced in athletics. Years ahead," were Kerr's reactions to wearing the new shoes."I was like a child again on Christmas morning. It has been very special to see this vision come to life."ULTRA AGGRESSIVEKerr said the newly custom-designed shoes, with a stiff but lightweight carbon fibre plate embedded in the sole, were "ultra aggressive" and offered up a rocker effect, with no cushioning beneath the heel."This sort of design suits the demands of a mile world record, where changes of pace should be less dramatic than a championship race and it is more about constantly holding an all-out record speed."Kerr, coached by Danny Mackey, lives at high altitude in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but has also converted his bedroom into an altitude chamber to better benefit from the natural production of more oxygen-rich red blood cells.That setup, however, does not make for later evenings."After dinner, at about 7.45pm, my wife Larimar and I will go in. We can watch a film but we're usually asleep by 8.30pm," said the two-time world indoor 3,000m champion.Devotion to the sport has seen Kerr miss out on life with extended family in the United Kingdom, while he has surrounded himself with a dedicated backroom staff including physiotherapists, mental coaches and even a "performance chef".Kerr's defence of his 1,500m title at last year's world championships in Tokyo did not go to plan as he strained his calf in the semi-final -- something for which he blames himself."Tokyo happened for a reason and it has only left me mentally stronger than ever for this world-record attempt," he said.Kerr will line up in a strong field on Saturday including American Yared Nuguse, whose North American mile record of 3:43.97 guarantees a dramatic race in the British capital.  

A shock pole vault defeat last month came as a needed wake-up call, said world record holder Mondo Duplantis, who arrives at Friday’s Monaco Diamond League meet fired up to get back to his winning ⁠ways.The high-flying Swede is already a legend having broken the world record 15 ⁠times, but his run of 40 straight victories came to an abrupt end in front of his compatriots in Stockholm. He failed in both attempts to clear six metres at the Diamond League event and came up short in a final attempt at clearing 6.05. He recovered three weeks later to win in Paris but was ⁠unable to best his own world record mark of 6.31."Coming off of a bit of a poor performance in Stockholm made me more motivated and more hungry," said Duplantis, adding that he was able to recapture his focus after his June 12 nuptials."I'm really ready to roll and I really haven't been this fired up to jump in, I feel like, a ⁠long time. So I feel good about it. ⁠I think ⁠sometimes you need a little bit of a wake-up."The back-to-back Olympic champion said he was in superb shape for Monaco, where he has recently taken up residency."It's going to be the home turf for the first time," said Duplantis, adding that he had to fight for the event's inclusion in the meet, which adds even more motivation when he picks up the pole on Friday."I'm putting a lot of pressure on myself before this competition, which is a really good thing."

* ISL will pay just over $7 million to about 312 athletes * First instalment is scheduled by year-end * League hopes to stage an event in 2026 before a fuller comeback in 2027  The International Swimming League will pay more than 300 ‌athletes long-overdue prize money owed from its 2021 season, Commissioner Ben Allen told ​Reuters, as the professional swimming ‌circuit seeks to rebuild trust and relaunch after years of inactivity.Allen said the ‌ISL would pay ⁠all the prize money ‌owed, with just over $7 million due to ‌about 312 athletes who were being informed in a letter from the ISL being sent out ⁠on Sunday.Among the notable swimmers set to receive payments are multiple Olympic champions Ryan Murphy, Sarah Sjostrom and Summer McIntosh.Payments will be made in four instalments of 25%, with the first scheduled by the end of this year and the rest expected annually, though the league would accelerate the process if possible. Some Russian athletes will have to wait longer to receive their funds due to technical issues regarding their bank accounts."We are paying our ​2021 prize money," Allen said in an interview where he broke news of the payments."It's unfortunate that it's been a couple of years. We've been hit by a couple of different issues - the war in ‌Europe, COVID. We had a lot ⁠of challenges but we're ​at the point where we can do it now."It's an obligation we've ​always said that we're going to fulfil."'NOT TURNING OUR BACKS'Launched in 2019, the ISL sought to professionalise elite swimming through a team-based competition model and attracted many of the sport's biggest names. It has not held a season since 2021.Allen said total athlete compensation for the 2021 season was north of $10 million, including roughly 25% in "solidarity payments" designed to support swimmers during the COVID-19 pandemic, when competition opportunities were limited.Those solidarity payments had been completed, he said, leaving the remaining 75% - just over $7 million - in performance-based prize money."We are not turning our backs on our athletes and we're going to fulfil our obligations."Allen said ‌the payments would be made with ‌no reductions or conditions attached and ⁠would apply to active and retired athletes alike."Everyone will get 100%," he said. "They earned the money. ⁠They swam, they competed, they performed, they ⁠deserve it."ISL COMEBACKAllen said the league's original financiers remained supportive, including ISL founder Konstantin Grigorishin, who he said was still involved in the organisation and its planned relaunch.He said the delays were caused by the pandemic, which increased costs and made sponsorship more difficult, and by the impact of the war in Europe on Grigorishin, a Ukrainian billionaire and the league's main financier.Allen also cited ​the ISL's legal victory over World Aquatics in the U.S. federal court in January as a significant development that could improve the league's commercial prospects.He said the ISL hoped to stage an event in 2026 before a fuller comeback in 2027, though details remain unresolved.The league is considering reorganising teams geographically, entering new markets and adjusting its event format to make competitions more attractive to travelling spectators and broadcasters."There are a lot of things which are still up in the air," Allen said."The main news is that we didn't turn our back on the community. ‌We're paying everyone everything. ​We'll need a bit of time, but everyone will get everything and then we can move on."
