Griffin’s Citadel rescues AI fund Situational Awareness

When rival hedge funds face catastrophic losses, billionaire investor Ken Griffin has a habit of identifying opportunities and showing up with a checkbook. Citadel's founder this ‌week reprised his role as one of Wall Street's rescue buyers, stepping in to salvage California hedge fund Situational Awareness as it buckled under souring bets on artificial ‌intelligence stocks.Amid market rumblings that at least one firm was in trouble, Griffin, 57, assembled his top lieutenants ‌to investigate, according to five people with knowledge of the ‌matter.By Wednesday morning, Citadel executives had reached out to Situational Awareness, ‌and Griffin spoke directly with Leopold Aschenbrenner, the fund's young founder and a former OpenAI researcher.Together with Citadel co-Chief Investment Officer Pablo Salame, Chief Operating Officer Gerald Beeson, Perry Vais, its head of equity quantitative research, and Chief Legal Officer Shawn Fagan, Griffin pulled an all-nighter to analyze the trading book positions of Situational Awareness and how liquid the bets were, the sources said. After a selloff in AI stocks, the Situational Awareness portfolio lost 67% of its value in July, and the fund was forced to unwind most of its $16bn public equities book. By Thursday, Citadel had bought a chunk of its book."We let you down," Aschenbrenner wrote to his investors in a letter seen by Reuters.Word spread quickly on Wall Street that Citadel, one of the world's largest hedge funds which prides itself on disciplined risk-taking and seizing market opportunities, had stepped in."There are only a few firms that could take down this much risk," said one investor familiar with the deal who was not authorised to speak publicly.Reuters could not ascertain how much money Citadel had made on the deal, although ‌many AI stocks in the portfolio have risen since.Representatives for Citadel and Situational Awareness declined to comment.For Griffin, who began trading from his Harvard University dormitory some four decades ago and now oversees $71bn in assets, it is a playbook that stretches back decades."During market stress, the collective judgment of our business leaders, risk managers and portfolio managers enables us to capitalise on market opportunities when others, who depend on simplistic stop-loss approaches, cannot," Griffin wrote in a 2023 letter to investors seen by Reuters. When energy company Enron filed for what was then the largest bankruptcy in US history in 2001, Griffin chartered a jet that same day, dispatching top Citadel executives to interview nearly all of the energy traders and analysts who had worked there, the Financial Times reported last month and one of the sources confirmed. The recruits would go on to shape Citadel's commodities franchise for years. It was an approach Griffin would return to time and again as markets lurched from one crisis to the next. In 2007, $3bn hedge fund Sowood Capital transferred a portion of its portfolio to Citadel ‌after Sowood became the first high-profile fund casualty of ‌the global financial crisis sparked by subprime lending that led to the collapse of firms including US investment bank Lehman Brothers. "Citadel offered the only immediate and comprehensive solution," Sowood founder Jeffrey Larson wrote to clients, Reuters reported at the time. The Sowood move followed on the heels of Citadel rescuing the energy portfolio of failed hedge fund Amaranth Advisors, which went out of business after losing $6.4bn from bad bets on natural gas trading.And in 2021, when Main Street investors uniting on social media platform Reddit took the opposite side of prominent hedge fund Melvin Capital's bet against ailing video game retailer GameStop, Citadel stepped in again. Together with Steven Cohen's hedge fund Point72 Asset Management, where Melvin's founder Gabe Plotkin had previously worked, Citadel injected $2.75bn into the troubled firm.Griffin was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1968. After placing his first convertible bond trades as a college student, he founded Miami-based Citadel in 1990 in Chicago and built it into one of the world's most profitable hedge funds.Forbes estimates Griffin's personal fortune at roughly $52bn. In 2002, Griffin expanded beyond hedge funds by co-founding Citadel Securities, a market maker that has become a cornerstone of global trading.Griffin has donated more than $2.5bn to causes ranging from medical research to educational institutions, and made headlines for giving more than half a billion dollars to his alma mater, Harvard.Griffin is known as a prominent Republican donor who has weighed in on thorny topics like President Donald Trump's tariffs, calling them a "huge policy mistake."On the Goldman Sachs Great Investors Podcast in June, Griffin said, "You'll never manage a portfolio for every possible tail event but you should stay very ‌focused on what is the worst-case scenario.

Qatar Chamber concludes ‘Young Investor’ training programme

Qatar Chamber recently concluded its ‘Young Investor’ training programme, which was held over three days at the chamber’s headquarters with the participation of several young people. The training was organised as part of the chamber’s ongoing efforts to promote financial literacy and enhance economic awareness among the younger generation. It aimed to introduce children and young people to the basics of saving, money management, and investment through interactive learning methods that included knowledge and practical application, helping participants develop a sound understanding of financial concepts in a simple and engaging manner. The programme featured a series of workshops and practical activities focused on developing financial planning skills, promoting sound financial decision-making, and encouraging participants to adopt a culture of saving and investment from an early age. Fatima Issa al-Kuwari, head of Training and Development at Qatar Chamber, said the initiative reflects the chamber’s commitment to investing in the development of future generations by instilling financial literacy from an early age, enabling young people to make informed financial decisions in the future. She noted that the programme was designed using an interactive approach that combined learning with enjoyment, making financial concepts more accessible while strengthening participants’ understanding of saving, money management, and investment.

QSE awaits H1 results as index targets 10,710 level

The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) index closed the week down 0.690%, losing 70.650 points compared to last week, to settle at 10,211 points under pressure from five sectors.QSE figures for this week indicate that the transportation sector suffered the largest losses, declining by 1.790 %, while the real estate sector recorded the highest gains, rising by 0.28 %.Talking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), financial analyst Mubarak al-Tamimi said the QSE is anticipating a new phase next week with the disclosure of companies' first-half results, noting that the index is trading within a technical support zone that could pave the way for a new upward trend if investor sentiment improves.Al-Tamimi added that the QSE index fluctuated this week between the weekly support level of 10,227 points and the monthly support level of 9,927, with the possibility of testing the 9,727-point level if selling pressure continues, particularly from foreign investors in the banking and industrial sectors.He pointed out that the recent selling pressure was linked to the anticipation surrounding the release of financial results, emphasizing that next week will be clearer in determining the market's direction, with emerging investment opportunities in stocks expected to deliver strong results or offer semi-annual dividends.He predicted that the index would rebound from current support levels and enter an upward trend, provided it successfully surpasses the resistance level at 10,340 points. This could propel it to target 10,580 as an initial objective, followed by 10,710 as a subsequent target.Al-Tamimi concluded by stating that the performance of bank stocks and the announcements of leading companies' results will be the primary drivers of market performance in the coming period, noting that positive results could bolster investor confidence and support continued improvement in the QSE during the second half of the year.

Nvidia tells sceptical investors AI is ready to go mainstream

Nvidia Corp, facing more investor scepticism, used its latest quarterly report to tout progress in diversifying the company, which aims to rely less on the giant data center operators that have fueled its runaway growth.Though spending has continued to surge from large data center clients — a group known as hyperscalers — Nvidia predicted that a vast array of other businesses and governments would soon become a bigger source of revenue. They’re poised to snap up Nvidia’s chips and other computing products to support their own artificial intelligence ambitions.Down the road, so-called physical AI will bring a colossal new opportunity in the form of robots and automated vehicles, Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said on a conference call with analysts. “We’ve got it all covered,” he said.But investors have become harder to impress. Even after the company beat analysts’ estimates with its results and forecast, the shares were little changed after markets opened in New York on Thursday. Shareholders weren’t swayed by an expansion of investor rewards, including a massive increase to the company’s dividend.Sales in the three months ending in July will be about $91bn, the company said in its quarterly report. That topped the average estimate of $87bn, though analysts’ projections ranged as high as $96bn, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.At the same time, the company is facing the first major challenges to its dominance in AI computing, with a variety of chipmakers trying to carve out a piece of the business. And major buyers of Nvidia’s technology are developing their own in-house components.Nvidia shares had gained 20% this year heading into the report. That increase outpaced the S&P 500 but trailed most major chip peers.Nvidia is the top seller of AI accelerators, chips used to develop artificial intelligence models. But it faces growing competition from across Silicon Valley. Advanced Micro Devices Inc has rival processors, and Broadcom Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google are attacking the market with their own technology.Nvidia remains in an enviable position, with Wall Street predicting that the company’s revenue will account for more than a third of the entire semiconductor sector’s sales this year.“The build-out of AI factories — the largest infrastructure expansion in human history — is accelerating at extraordinary speed,” Huang said in a statement.Data center spending, which is the main source of Nvidia’s revenue, hasn’t shown signs of letting up. Hyperscalers plan to shell out a combined total of roughly $725bn on AI this year. And based on Nvidia’s latest results, revenue from those companies continues to outpace other sources.That hasn’t just buoyed sales of accelerators. General-purpose CPUs, or central processing units, also are in greater demand. That’s lifted results for Intel Corp. and AMD. Chip upstarts are getting a boost as well: Cerebras Systems Inc, which offers a novel product based on large pieces of silicon, had the year’s biggest initial public offering last week.Santa Clara, California-based Nvidia doesn’t just sell accelerators. It offers a range of chips, as well as networking, software, AI models and even complete computer systems. That helps make its reach and capabilities unassailable, Nvidia management has argued. The company has said it has more orders than it can fill and is investing to add supply to meet that demand.In the three months ended April 26, Nvidia’s sales gained 85% to $81.6bn. Analysts had estimated $79.2bn on average. Profit, minus certain items, climbed to $1.87 a share. That beat a projection of $1.77. Adjusted gross margin, the percentage of revenue remaining after deducting costs of production, was 75%.Nvidia boosted its quarterly dividend to 25 cents a share from a penny. And the chipmaker announced $80bn in stock repurchases.Nvidia’s all-important data center unit generated revenue of $75.2bn, compared with an estimate of $73.5bn. Networking, part of the data center division, delivered $14.8bn in sales, versus an estimate of $12.7bn.As part of its report, Nvidia said it was transitioning to a new framework that would better reflect “its current and future growth drivers.” Its data centre sales figures will now separate hyperscalers from a group it calls ACIE, for AI clouds, industrial and enterprise customers.The company is on course to record total revenue of more than $370bn this year, according to estimates. By that measure, it will be roughly 22 times the size it was in fiscal 2021. Nvidia easily chalks up more sales in a quarter than its next three largest rivals combined.Huang has just returned from a trip with President Donald Trump to China, the largest market for semiconductors overall. US export rules have stymied Nvidia’s growth in that country by restricting sales of AI accelerators on national security grounds.The Trump administration has begun allowing older Nvidia products to be sold to Chinese customers. But Beijing, trying to cultivate local suppliers, has resisted that initiative. That’s left Nvidia mostly locked out of a market that it has said could generate $50bn a year.

QNB Group will continue to deepen capital markets, broaden investor access, and strengthen institutional infrastructure as it maintained strong strategic momentum in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026.At the same time, QNB will also accelerate the scaling of its digital ecosystems and enhance payment capabilities across its network with a particular focus on making cross-border banking easier and more efficient for clients across its business units, the group said in its Q1-2026 progress update.Highlighting that sustainability will remain central, with continued integration of ESG (environmental, social and governance) considerations across products, operations, and institutional frameworks; it said supported by strong fundamentals and disciplined execution, QNB remains "well positioned" to deliver sustainable long-term value while contributing to the resilience and growth of the markets in which it operates."Our progress in the first quarter reflects disciplined execution across our strategic priorities. We continue to strengthen market infrastructure, scale our digital ecosystems, expand our international footprint, and embed sustainability across our operations," said Abdulla Mubarak al-Khalifa, Group chief executive officer of QNB.During Q1-2026, QNB continued to play a central role in advancing financial market development, with a focus on enhancing the depth, accessibility, and efficiency of capital markets in Qatar.A key milestone was the successful issuance of a QR1bn bond on the Qatar Stock Exchange, the largest issuance in the domestic market, representing a significant step in diversifying funding sources, enhancing transparency, supporting secondary market liquidity, and contributes to more effective price discovery.QNB also strengthened its capital markets activity across its international network. In Turkiye, it successfully issued a $500mn Eurobond and completed a $380mn long-term securitisation, further diversifying its funding base and reinforcing access to global capital markets.During Q1-2026, QNB Group advanced strategic partnerships to strengthen its digital payments and merchant ecosystem. Its collaboration with Dibsy, formalised during Web Summit Qatar 2026, enhances merchant acquiring capabilities and supports a more integrated payments landscape for businesses and consumers.At a regional level, QNB expanded payment services in Syria in collaboration with Mastercard, strengthening transaction infrastructure and enabling greater connectivity across markets, reflecting its broader focus on cross-border payments and the continued digitisation of financial services across its footprint.In Indonesia, the launch of the Coupa Spend Management System enhances procurement efficiency, operational transparency, and financial control, reflecting a broader focus on internal optimisation and digital enablement.In Egypt, QNB strengthened its client segmentation strategy through the launch of its private banking service, providing ultra-high-net-worth individuals with tailored wealth management and advisory services.During the quarter, the group surpassed $10bn in brand value, reinforcing its position as the most valuable banking brand in the Middle East and Africa, as recognised by Brand Finance.During Q1-2026, QNB continued to advance its sustainability agenda, building on the progress outlined in its Sustainability Report 2025 and a key milestone was QNB’s ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

Egyptian stocks soar as investors take note of economic renewal

Egypt’s benchmark stock index is soaring ahead of developing-nation peers, buoyed by growing investor interest in a market that’s seen benefiting from government measures to revive the economy.The EGX30 index is up 27% in dollar terms this year, more than double the gain of the MSCI EM equity index and far outpacing the developed-market gauge.While last week’s central bank interest-rate cut fueled the rally, boosting the index by more than 5% in two days, that was just adding to bullish sentiment that’s been in place for more than a year. The benchmark returned 50% for dollar investors in 2025 as authorities took steps to boost private-sector activity, cut debt-service costs, lower inflation and attract foreign investment.A strengthening currency and plans to privatize more than two dozen state-owned companies have added to the appeal of Egyptian stocks. Still, the Cairo benchmark trades at a steep discount to the broader emerging-market gauge, with a price-earnings ratio of nine, compared with almost 18. That leaves room for further gains, according to Allen Sandeep, director of equities at ACT Financial in Cairo.“Current valuations are still cheap,” Sandeep said. “The EGX is right now on a positive re-rating path.”The recent rate cut built on more than 700 basis points of easing last year. The central bank also cut the required reserve ratio for banks by two percentage points in a bid to stimulate lending and liquidity. Even with the rate cuts, Egypt’s real interest rate remains at about 7%.The government devalued the currency by 40% two years ago and shifted to a free exchange-rate regime that helped secure a $57bn global bailout in early 2024. Those funds included $35bn in investments from the United Arab Emirates, as well as an expanded $8bn International Monetary Fund program, and billions more in pledges from the European Union.Officials are also trying to boost interest in the local market through new measures such as derivatives trading, which is set to begin in March.That’s also stoked interest in new listings. The private tranche in an initial public offering for premium grocery retailer Gourmet Egypt SAE was more than twelve times oversubscribed and the company’s stock jumped 40% on the first day of trade earlier this month.“With FX liquidity and exchange-rate stability being restored, foreign participation in the EGX has jumped,” said Sandeep. Foreigners accounted for as much as 14% of total market turnover in February, versus 5.5% in 2025, he said. “We expect this pattern to continue.”

Ron Baron’s big SpaceX bet sidesteps SEC’s illiquid assets cap

Ron Baron — a longtime Elon Musk investor and a newcomer to the exchange-traded fund universe — is already subverting norms in the $14tn industry.A peek under the hood of the Baron First Principles ETF (which trades under the ticker RONB) reveals a portfolio that, depending on the day, many thought to be impossible: One of its largest holding is SpaceX, a Musk-founded privately held rocket company, with a weighting that has vacillated between 11% and 22% in the past few weeks.The stake often exceeds the 15% ceiling on illiquid assets that US regulations put in place for open-ended funds — a category that includes non-public equities.The reason why Baron Capital is able to do so boils down to a little-known fact about how issuers report their holdings to the Securities and Exchange Commission: Fund firms determine the liquidity classifications of their holdings themselves, rather than US regulators doing so. While “illiquid” securities are capped at the 15% threshold, the other three categories — highly, moderately and less liquid — do not have percentage limits, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Indeed, Baron Capital is classifying its SpaceX holding in RONB as “less liquid”, a spokesperson confirmed.The RONB episode is blurring the traditionally held boundaries of the ETF wrapper. While the vehicle has expanded to markets such as commodities and cryptocurrencies, the lion’s share of the industry’s assets are concentrated in ETFs that hold publicly listed stocks and bonds. The introduction of private equity and credit has fanned fears about a liquidity mismatch between the underlying holdings and the ETFs themselves, which trade continuously throughout the day. Additionally, there are outstanding questions about how private securities are being classified — for example, while RONB may regard SpaceX shares as “less liquid” securities, other fund managers may treat them differently.“If you’re going to be a new entrant, maybe making a splash is a good thing — thinking from their perspective, it’s a competitive marketplace and how do you stand out? Certainly this makes it stand out, for better or worse,” said Adam Sabban, Associate Director, Equity Strategies at Morningstar. “Having such a large stake in privates is rare, particularly when it’s mostly in one company. Most funds are afraid to bet 15% on any stock, let alone a privately held one.”Baron Capital has been investing in SpaceX in its funds since 2017, and informed the SEC of its plan to classify the shares as “less liquid” given its history of transacting in the stock, according to a person familiar with the matter.RONB is among just a handful of ETFs that hold private assets, though its exposure is by far the largest percentage weighting. The full list includes the $1.7bn ERShares Private-Public Crossover ETF (XOVR), which has a nearly 10% allocation to SpaceX through a special- purpose vehicle. Meanwhile, funds such as the $500mn SPDR SSGA IG Public & Private Credit ETF (PRIV) devote a sliver of their portfolio to private debt.While Baron Capital is new to ETFs, the bottoms-up stockpicking firm has cultivated a loyal following among its mutual fund investors since its founding in 1982. The asset manager is known for its early bets on Musk’s companies, which helped the Baron Partners Fund clinch the title of being the sole actively managed mutual fund to outperform the Nasdaq 100 over the five, 10 and 15 years through July 2023, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.Leaning heavily into private companies such as SpaceX — which is combining with xAI into a larger entity in a deal valued at $1.25tn as it reportedly looks to go public later this year — could help RONB become “the next active ETF star,” Bloomberg Intelligence senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas wrote in a recent report. While the fund has fallen on a total return basis since its mid-December launch, investors have bought in nevertheless. Nearly $100mn has flowed into RONB so far in 2026, bringing its total assets to $161mn.However, those inflows have exposed a key drawback of private company-heavy ETFs: More money can lead to temporary dilution, given that private shares are more difficult to acquire than public stocks. The opposite is true with outflows: When faced with redemptions, its allocation to SpaceX may increase as the fund sells its more liquid holdings. In the case of RONB, while its SpaceX stake currently sits at about 18%, it stood at nearly 22% two weeks ago, data compiled by Bloomberg show.“Creations and redemptions are being handled through liquid assets, though it does mean private positions can be diluted over time as the fund grows, which is a trade-off investors need to understand,” said Bloomberg Intelligence mutual fund analyst David Cohne.Baron Capital’s move to classify SpaceX as “less liquid” in order to bypass the 15% cap has yet to inspire copycats. While it may be that the “definition of illiquid is changing,” according to Ark Investment Management’s Cathie Wood, her firm opted to go with the interval fund format to invest in private companies in order to exceed that threshold. The ARK Venture Fund counts private companies SpaceX, Figure AI and OpenAI among its top holdings.Additionally, Ark has found that the executives of the private companies that the firm invests in have been reluctant to have their shares included in highly liquid ETFs, according to Wood.“We have actually gone to some of our private companies, the one in the interval fund, saying ‘Hey, we would love to add you into our ETFs because we think this is such an important story’,” Wood said on Bloomberg Television’s ETF IQ. “We found over time that they have been reticent.”

China's oil investments in Venezuela

China is a major customer of and investor in Venezuela's oil sector, which President Donald Trump aims to revive following the US military's ouster of President Nicolas Maduro ‌on Saturday.Years of mismanagement, underinvestment and, more recently, US sanctions have ‌slashed Venezuelan crude production ‍to about 1.1mn barrels per day (bpd) last year from a peak of some 3.5mn bpd in the late 1990s, according to official figures.Here are details on Beijing's role in the country's oil sector.A MAJOR ‍BUYER: Much of Venezuela's exported oil is sold to China, although Beijing declares very little and imports are often rebranded. Imports hit about 470,000 bpd during 2025, according to energy analytics firm Vortexa, or roughly 4.5% of China's seaborne crude imports.Small independent refiners known as "teapots" are the main Chinese buyers of discounted Venezuelan crude. A portion also goes to repaying Caracas' debt to ‌Beijing, which analysts estimate exceeds $10bn. AN INVESTOR AND PRODUCER: Chinese investors poured $2.1bn into the country's oil sector after 2016, according to a 2023 estimate from the American Enterprise Institute, and ‍are among a handful of foreign firms still ‌operating in the country. China National Petroleum Corp: The major state-owned oil company was a big investor before the US imposed sanctions in 2019 and still produces crude at the Sinovensa joint venture with state-owned oil company PDVSA. CNPC stopped lifting Venezuelan oil in 2019, but crude has since made its way to China via traders and other state-owned firms. CNPC is a partner in a joint venture that controls 1.6bn barrels of oil reserves in the country, according to Morgan Stanley.Sinopec Group: The state-owned giant is a partner in a joint venture that controls 2.8bn barrels of reserves in Venezuela, ‌according to Morgan Stanley. CNPC and Sinopec did not immediately respond to queries on their Venezuela involvement.China Concord Resources Corp: The private ‍company planned last year to invest more than $1bn in two oilfields to produce 60,000 bpd by the end of 2026, Reuters reported. The company could not be reached for comment.Kerui Petroleum: The private oil services company was granted an oil production contract in 2024 by PDVSA, according to a July 2024 S&P report, citing an anonymous PDVSA official. It was unclear if the contract is active, as many are not. The company did not respond to a request for comment.Anhui Erhuan Petroleum Group: The private refined oil wholesaler and retailer was also granted an oil production contract in 2024 by PDVSA, according to the same S&P report, again citing an anonymous PDVSA official. It was also unclear if the contract is active. The Chinese company denied any involvement in a PDVSA joint venture in a phone call to Reuters on Monday.
