Russian air attacks across Ukraine early Saturday killed at least four people and damaged critical infrastructure, including a port and a maternity hospital, authorities said, as Russia pressed on with its war against Ukraine.Moscow has been firing drones at Ukraine in nightly barrages during its four-year invasion launched in February 2022, with Kyiv accusing it of attacking residential areas and targeting civilians.In the southern port city of Odesa, two people were killed and at least 13 wounded, said Sergiy Lysak, the head of the city's military administration, adding that one of the hits damaged a maternity hospital.AFP images showed shattered windows, with rubble inside the building and shards of glass strewn across the floor and treatment chairs."There was no military purpose whatsoever — this was pure terror against ordinary civilian life," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on social media about the strikes on Odesa.A port in the Odesa region was also damaged in the shelling, after several hits were recorded on its infrastructure, Ukraine's state ports authority said.Russia launched 273 drones at Ukraine overnight, 252 of which were shot down, the Ukrainian air force said Saturday.In Kryvyi Rig, a man was killed in a morning strike that hit an industrial enterprise, said Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the Dnipro regional administration. He said fires erupted at the site.In the central Poltava region, one person was killed after Russian drones hit a residential building and industrial facilities, regional authorities said.State oil firm Naftogaz said the victim was its employee who worked as a process plant operator."We have suffered a tragic loss. Our colleague, 55-year-old Roman Chmykhun, was killed during one of the attacks," Naftogaz said on Telegram, adding: "This is the second death of one of our colleagues this week."It said its facilities in the region were targeted "for the third day running".In Russia's Yaroslavl region, a child was killed in a drone attack, regional governor Mikhail Evraev said on Telegram.Moscow said that a total of 155 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed in Russia's airspace overnight. 

The General Directorate of Endowments at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs has announced the continuation of its institutional partnership with the Heart Hospital at Hamad Medical Corp under the Nabd Waqf for heart patients, affiliated with the Healthcare Endowment Fund. The initiative aims to strengthen the role of endowments in supporting specialised healthcare for heart patients unable to afford treatment costs. In a statement issued Tuesday, the ministry said the efforts fall within the directorate’s strategy to develop healthcare endowments and expand co-operation with Hamad Medical Corp, reflecting its commitment to building a sustainable institutional endowment model that contributes to safeguarding lives and enhancing the quality of healthcare services in the country. Commenting on the partnership, Eng. Hassan bin Abdullah al-Marzouqi, director-general of the General Directorate of Endowments, said the collaboration, launched in 2021, represents “a practical model of national integration in serving patients.” He noted that since its establishment, the Nabd Waqf has contributed to the treatment of heart patients by providing financial support for critical surgeries, the implantation of advanced medical devices, and covering treatment and hospitalisation costs for eligible cases. He added that the initiative underscores the impact of healthcare endowments as a sustainable instrument for supporting the national medical system, expressing appreciation to donors, whose contributions constitute an ongoing charitable reward. Al-Marzouqi further highlighted that the directorate’s vision is based on investing endowment assets and channelling their returns to vital sectors, foremost among them healthcare, through the Healthcare Endowment Fund, which operates under clear governance standards to ensure equitable distribution and sustainable impact. Dr Abdulwahid al-Mulla, senior consultant and head of the cardiothoracic surgery department at Heart Hospital, Hamad Medical Corp, said the support provided through the Nabd Waqf has become a key pillar of the Patient Care Fund. It has enabled the performance of complex cardiac surgeries and the implantation of high-cost medical devices for patients unable to bear treatment expenses. He noted that the funding has helped cover surgical preparations, medications, medical devices, and hospital stays, ensuring patients receive timely treatment without delay. The support has also assisted many beneficiaries in regaining their ability to work and continue supporting their families both inside and outside Qatar, directly contributing to their social and family stability. The Healthcare Endowment Fund is one of the endowment funds affiliated with the General Directorate of Endowments. It specialises in channelling endowment revenues towards medical and therapeutic services for eligible beneficiaries through strategic partnerships with national healthcare institutions. The Nabd Waqf falls within this framework as a specialised initiative supporting heart patients. It operates under rigorous evaluation mechanisms, in co-ordination with Hamad Medical Corp, to determine funding priorities and ensure resources are directed to the most urgent cases.

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli forces killed two teenagers in a drone strike Saturday.The civil defence agency, which operates as a rescue service under Hamas authority, said the drone killed the two near Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza.The territory's Al-Shifa Hospital said it received the two bodies, adding they were two boys aged 13 and 15.The military said the pair had posed an "immediate threat" to its soldiers."Earlier today... troops operating in the northern Gaza Strip identified several fighters who crossed the Yellow Line, planted an explosive device in the area, and approached the troops, posing an immediate threat to them," the military said in a statement.Under a US-brokered ceasefire that came into effect on October 10, Israeli forces have withdrawn to positions behind a so-called "Yellow Line" in Gaza, though they remain in control of more than half of the territory.A military press officer told AFP that its troops had "killed two fighters and not children", without specifying the ages of those killed.The civil defence said another fatality was also reported in a separate incident when an Israeli quadcopter struck a group of civilians in Jabalia, also in northern Gaza.It did not provide details on the person killed in that incident. The press officer said the military had reports of only one incident.Israeli forces have killed at least 477 Palestinians in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect, according to Gaza's health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority.The Israeli army says Palestinian fighters have killed four of its soldiers during the same period.Media restrictions in Gaza and limited access to many areas mean AFP cannot independently verify casualty figures and details provided by either side.The ceasefire has largely halted fighting between Israel and Hamas, but both sides have accused each other of violating its terms.

Qatar Charity has concluded a project to operate and support Bab Al-Hawa Hospital after six months of continuous work, from July to December 2025. The project restored the operational capacity of this vital medical facility, enabling it to provide free and safe medical services to tens of thousands of residents in northwestern Syria. Qatar Charity said in a statement Tuesday that, since its establishment on January 1, 2013, Bab Al-Hawa Hospital has formed a fundamental medical lifeline in the region, providing its services to more than 2.5mn beneficiaries over 13 years. Today, it stands as one of the largest and most important referral hospitals relied upon by the Idlib Health Directorate for the treatment of advanced and critical cases, particularly among displaced populations in camps, the statement added. With population growth and increasing pressure on the health sector, the hospital has gradually expanded to include high-quality specialised departments such as advanced surgery, intensive care, paediatric surgery, kidney dialysis, endoscopy, specialised outpatient clinics, as well as laboratories, a blood bank, and other vital medical units. Qatar Charity pointed out, that over the past two years, the hospital experienced a suspension of financial and medical support, which directly threatened the continuity of its operations and essential services, including the functioning of sensitive departments, securing medicines, supporting medical staff, and maintaining equipment. Local officials said that, since the beginning of 2025, the hospital has resumed operating at full capacity, with the number of services reaching up to 20,000 medical services per month during the project period. This response came considering the significant increase in patient numbers following the closure of several other service centres in northern Idlib. The support included covering the salaries of medical, nursing, and technical staff to ensure operational stability, providing medicines and consumables for emergency cases and specialised surgeries, in addition to reactivating vital departments such as internal medicine clinics, surgery, operating rooms, and kidney dialysis. In this context, Director of Bab Al-Hawa Hospital, Dr Yassin Alloush, said, "We extend our sincere thanks to Qatar Charity for this generous support, which was not merely financial assistance, but rather a genuine humanitarian partnership that enabled the hospital to continue fulfilling its mission. Over six months of support, we were able to double our capacity to receive patients and provide surgical and specialised services that were at risk of being suspended."

The three-storey Child Health Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana's capital Accra is a place with hushed corridors, laboured breathing and parents clutching on to hope. But on Friday, the gloom gave way to shrieks of joy as children with drips taped to their arms sat upright for the first time in days.Others, too weak to stand, managed faint but determined smiles. Nurses paused mid-rounds, phones raised in the cancer ward. Even exhausted mothers lit up. The reason was nearly six feet seven inches (2.03-metre) tall, dressed in the iconic blue-and-red Superman suit and cape. In real life Leonardo Muylaert is a lawyer specialised in civil rights who needs reading glasses to work. Muylaert — known worldwide as the "Brazilian Superman" — was rounding up his one-week maiden visit to Ghana, his first trip to Africa, and the cancer ward erupted into life. Everywhere he walked, children reached for his hands. Parents scrambled for selfies.Medical staff crowded the hallways. "He moved from bed to bed, giving each child attention," a nurse whispered. "For some of them, this is the first time we've seen them smile in weeks." For 35-year-old Regina Awuku, whose five-year-old son is battling leukaemia, the moment was miraculous. "My son was so happy to see Superman. This means a lot to us," she said. "You saw my son lying quietly on the bed, but he had the energy to wake up as soon as he saw him.""I chose Ghana to visit for my birthday," Muylaert, who studied in the US on a basketball scholarship, said. "I feel I identify with the culture, with the heritage, with the happiness."'BROUGHT SUCH POSITIVE CHANGE'His sudden fame began in 2022 at the Comic-Con convention in Sao Paulo when a stranger surreptitiously shot a cell phone video of him, amazed at his resemblance to Superman film star Christopher Reeve. "Am I seeing Clark Kent?" asked the star-struck comic book fan, in a clip that soon racked up thousands of views on TikTok — unbeknownst to Muylaert, who did not even have a social media account at the time. Weeks later, Muylaert learned through friends that he had become an online sensation. "It was funny and crazy to read that so many people think I look like Superman," he told AFP then.That's when an idea took root in the back of his mind, he said: get a Superman suit and try the alter ego on for size. He ordered an old-fashioned costume online, and started travelling around Brazil as Superman. Muylaert visits hospitals, schools and charities, poses for pictures with commuters on random street corners, and generally tries to be what he calls a symbol of kindness and hope — all free of charge. He now visits vulnerable people worldwide. In Accra, after leaving the hospital, he went to a prosthetics workshop on the city's outskirts, where amputee children screamed "Superman! Superman!" as he joined their football match.For Akua Sarpong, founder of Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Ghana, the impact was immediate. "It has been a fun-filled day," she said. "I have seen so many children smiling and happy, even children undergoing treatment sitting up that I haven't seen in a long time. He has brought such positive change." Muylaert said the visit reinforced his belief in small acts of kindness. "Everybody can be a hero... you don't need a cape," he said. "The smile on their faces changes the world." As he prepared to fly back to Brazil, he said "the idea is to spread happiness all over.". "Maybe we won't change the whole world, but as long as we inspire one person, that person inspires the other."

Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) signed $1mn grant agreement with the ITF Enhancing Human Security (ITF) to support the Palestine Hospital in Harmalah - Bethlehem, with the aim of strengthening the healthcare system in the sisterly State of Palestine.The signing ceremony was witnessed by His Excellency Chairperson of QFFD Sheikh Thani bin Hamad al-Thani, and signed by Director General of QFFD Fahad bin Hamad al-Sulaiti, and Director of ITF Ambassador Tomaz Lovrencic.This contribution will enable ITF to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to respond to emergency medical needs by covering the procurement of raw materials and improving access to essential healthcare and rehabilitation services for populations affected by conflict, including those from Gaza.
