Gold retains its lustre: Are record highs here to stay?

The price of gold has dipped and then rallied in 2026 after two years of meteoric rises. Are the forces contributing to its elevated price likely to prove long-lasting?  Between July 2025 and January 2026 the French central bank sold 129 tonnes of gold stored in New York, and replaced it with gold bullion to be stored in Paris, realising around $15bn in capital gains. In a separate move, the central bank of the Netherlands moved 86 tonnes of gold from the US and Canada to vaults in London.  In terms of geopolitics, these moves reflect growing attention to the security and accessibility of reserves, although France described its transaction as a technical upgrade rather than a political decision. Nations that consider themselves vulnerable to invasion may not hold the bullion in their own vaults, but those with confidence in their security may prefer to do so.  This comes during a period of growing confidence in the precious metal as a long-term store of value and a useful hedge in a portfolio with risky assets. The central bank of China has increased its holdings of gold, adding to reserves for 22 consecutive months. At the end of August 2026 it held 2,387 tonnes, worth $350bn, up from 2,313 tonnes in the first quarter. Aggregate imports of gold bullion by Chinese investors and the central bank exceeded 1,000 tonnes in the eight months to end August.  Meanwhile foreign holdings of US Treasuries have fallen globally. The latest figures, from July this year, show a fall of $50bn to $9.25tn, the lowest total since October 2025. China’s reported holdings of US Treasuries fell by $15bn to $618bn, the lowest figure since August 2008.  The price of gold has soared in recent years. By late January 2026, the price had more than doubled in a two-year period – from around $2,080 per ounce at the start of 2024 to more than $5,000. It was due a correction at least, and it duly fell, dropping to below $4,000 by July, in part owing to the conflict in Iran. Although gold is a safe haven asset, rising energy prices fuelled inflation concerns and expectations of higher interest rates, putting pressure on gold. Governments may also sell gold to meet emergency needs or prop up their currencies. It offers a mature and liquid market.  The gold price has risen since July, trading at around $4,283 on September 25, although it fell during that week. In the second quarter of 2026, the average price of $4,506 was 8% lower than the first quarter, but 37% higher than the second quarter of 2025.In recent years the appeal of gold has been maintained through the economic cycle.  In the 2020s the historic inverse relationship between the gold price and real yields on bonds has weakened at times.  According to UBS analysis published in the Financial Times, between March 2022 and October 2023, real yields on US five-year Treasuries rose by more than four percentage points. In previous times, this might have been expected to trigger a substantial fall in the price of gold, but instead it increased 7%.  There has been no US recession, and stock market prices have also risen, albeit with much concentration in a small number of stocks. Many central banks continue to face inflation persisting above targets of around 2%, while government bond yields creep upwards in an era of high deficits and public sector debts.  Gold can be a more effective hedge than bonds against inflationary shocks for a portfolio that is heavy on stocks.Periods of bond yields, equities and the gold price rising in tandem challenge traditional assumptions. In short, commodities are expensive, borrowing costs are rising, and geopolitical trust is weakening. Tangible assets are prized, as well as corporate assets with real income streams.  In early 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US and its allies froze part of Russia’s foreign reserves. This was treated as a precedent by cautious central banks: If approximately $280bn of reserve assets could suddenly become inaccessible, it was prudent to increase the share of reserves represented by a physical asset held domestically, and the obvious choice is gold.  Central banks held around $5tn of gold assets at the end of the second quarter of 2026, representing 18% of all above-ground gold. Central banks and sovereign funds in emerging markets have increased the percentage of reserves represented by gold from 5-7% in 2022 to around 11%, while for advanced economies it has reached 26%, according to UBS analysis published in the Financial Times on September 3. Gold, however, represents around 3% of global financial assets excluding central-bank reserves, so there is scope for increase.  Gold is not the only commodity holding its value, or appreciating substantially. Agricultural products, for example, could fetch high prices given pressure on land and unpredictable climate, owing to global warming and the prospect of an exceptional El Niño phenomenon this year and next in the Pacific Ocean.  Copper hit record high prices in early September of over $14,500 per tonne, supported by tight supply and speculation of fresh tariffs by US President Trump. The price of silver was around $64 per ounce on September 25, below the highest price of 2026 of over $100, but still substantially higher than a year earlier. Oil prices are high owing to the conflict in the Gulf.  For gold, while there will be corrections and dips from time to time, the forces that keep prices elevated are likely to prove persistent. The last time US headline consumer-price inflation was below 2% was in early 2021.Will the inverse relationship between gold and yields strengthen again at some point in the future? It is possible, but real yields are only one influence on gold alongside central-bank demand, the dollar and geopolitical risks.n The author is a Qatari banker, with many years of experience in the banking sector in senior positions.

Lyles eyes American records as he plots path to Los Angeles Olympics

American records, another world title and Olympic gold in Los Angeles are all on Noah Lyles' radar after the sprinter shut down his 2026 season and began plotting what he believes could be the defining two years of his career.Lyles, who was forced to end his season early due to injury days before the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships, said on Tuesday that performances this year had convinced him he was capable of running significantly faster than his world-leading 9.79 seconds in the 100 metres."I don't like to put limits on myself," Lyles told reporters on a video call ahead of this week's Ultimate Championships in Budapest, an event he had a big role in designing."In my head, American records definitely come in, touching the stars, going after anything and everything."Tyson Gay set the national 100m record of 9.69 in 2009, while Lyles already owns the U.S. 200m record of 19.31 set in 2022. THE NEED TO PUT A TECHNICALLY COMPLETE RACEHe said he surprised himself by running two 9.7-second races at the U.S. championships despite feeling he had yet to put together a technically complete race."It's proven to myself that I can run very fast, even though I'm not 100% perfect with my first 30 (metres)," he said.The 29-year-old revealed that he and his team would hold planning sessions later this year to map out the next two seasons, describing 2027 as the foundation for his bid to retain his 100m Olympic gold on home soil in Los Angeles."2027 is the building block for 2028," he said. "Let's get that plan smoothed and polished so that when we go into 2028, we're just following the blueprint because we know it's going to work."To maximise his chances, Lyles said he intended to devote more attention to training and competition after a year that included numerous media and promotional commitments, plus a wedding to Jamaican sprinter Junelle Bromfield in April. 'A LOT MORE FOCUS'"I'm putting a lot more focus on more running and a lot less appearances," he said. "I think we've proven this year that in the U.S. and even in the world, the world knows Noah Lyles."The eight-time world champion announced on Friday he was shelving his season, saying a minor strain suffered earlier in the season led to other physical issues that hampered his training.Lyles had raised injury concerns at the U.S. championships in July when he pulled up during the men's 200m final after winning the 100m title in 9.79, which matched his personal best.He later described the issue as a cramp and had indicated he expected to compete in Budapest.The withdrawal of one of the sport's most recognisable stars is a blow to World Athletics' new season-ending showcase that offers a record $10-million prize purse. The 29-year-old said he still planned to attend the event which runs Friday through Sunday.

Gold rises as expectations of US interest rate hike recede

Gold hit its highest level in more than two months on Thursday, driven by receding expectations of a US interest rate hike following data showing a slowdown in inflationary pressures. Investors are now awaiting producer price data for further clues on the direction of inflation. Spot gold gained 0.6% to $4,433.62 per ounce after rising about 1% earlier to its highest level since June 5. US gold futures for December delivery also climbed 0.6% to $4,493. Among other precious metals, spot silver rose about 1% to $65.91 per ounce after touching its highest level since June 22 in the previous session. Platinum gained 0.3% to $1,762.70, while palladium rose 0.1% to $1,371.20.

Al-Athba strikes skeet gold for Qatar at ISSF World Cup

Qatar’s Rashid Saleh al-Athba produced a near-flawless display to win the men’s skeet gold medal at the ISSF World Cup Hangzhou 2026 on Thursday, edging Spain’s Jose Maria Mielgo Moneo in a thrilling final.In Hangzhou, al-Athba showcased exceptional consistency throughout the contest, hitting 35 of his 36 targets to clinch the title. The Qatari shooter carried a perfect score deep into the final before missing only his final target, by which time the gold medal had already been secured.The battle for the top step of the podium remained intense, with Mielgo Moneo matching al-Athba for much of the contest. The Spaniard finished with 34 hits, missing just two targets to settle for the silver medal after an outstanding performance.China's Lyu Jianlin delighted the home crowd by claiming the bronze medal with 29 hits. Lyu remained firmly in medal contention throughout the final before securing another podium finish for the host nation.Peru’s Nicolas Pacheco Espinosa narrowly missed out on the medals, finishing fourth with 25 hits. Japan’s Shotaro Toguchi placed fifth after prevailing in a tie-break against India’s Gurjoat Khangura, with both shooters ending on 19 hits.Italy’s Niccolo Sodi finished seventh, while France’s Nicolas Le Jeune placed eighth after both were eliminated with eight hits.The victory marks another major international success for al-Athba, whose composure and precision under pressure earned him the biggest prize in a final featuring athletes from seven nations and further underlined Qatar’s growing stature in world shooting.The World Cup continues on Friday with more rifle, pistol and shotgun medals to be decided as the competition enters its closing stages.

Custom designs, steady demand drive Qatar's QR1.2bn jewellery market

Qatar's jewellery and gold retail market has a total annual value estimated at around QR1.2bn, with the unique craftsmanship skills offered by many local gold retailers and workshops keeping the industry constantly expanding.Gold jewellery alone accounts for roughly 41% of the total local jewellery market revenue, supported by constant consumer demand mainly due to cultural and heritage factors, population diversity, and attractive competitive retail prices supported by tax-free advantages.In spite of the fluctuations in international gold rates, which normally reflect on the local market, gold shop retailers, especially the outlets within the traditional markets (souqs), noted that demand has remained good among most nationalities, in particular during the holidays, special occasions, religious festivals and the summer time.Retailers within Doha's traditional markets, particularly the historic Souq Waqif and the Gold Souq, have continued to witness healthy footfall throughout the year.**media[470782]**These markets remain among the country's most popular destinations for both residents and tourists seeking handcrafted jewellery, personalised designs, traditional Gulf ornaments, and internationally recognised brands.Shop owners indicate that while customer purchasing patterns have evolved in response to higher global prices, transaction volumes remain strong, particularly during peak shopping seasons."We receive orders all the time for special custom-made ornaments such as pendants with names written in Latin or Arabic calligraphy,” said Abdulkreem, a jeweller at a traditional Souq. “We have ready-made designs to offer customers to choose from, but customers can also bring their own designs, such as names written in certain formats, pendants that have particular designs and rings that have special patterns, and our skilled craftsmen will do them within a few days."He noted that customers often prefer designs inspired by traditional local patterns and scenery such as falcons, wings, palm tree fronds, traditional Arabic and Islamic geometric patterns and roses."The more intricate the requested design, the higher the labour charges, but the price of gold remains the same according the daily market value and the calibre, with many people often go for 21K and 22K,” Abdulkreem said. “So, first the required amount of gold is estimated and a quote for the final cost is agreed upon, then the order will be ready within a few days."In the meantime, many retailers across the country noted that higher prices have done little to dampen the overall consumer interest and demand, but buyers have become more selective, often choosing lighter-weight pieces or purchasing during promotional campaigns while continuing to prioritise gold as both an adornment and a long-term investment."There are some categories of customers who view gold as a solid investment, better than cash, as it keeps its value against potential inflation,” said Khalid, a gold retailer at a shopping mall jewellery outlet.“Such customers often look for gold jewellery at the lowest possible labour charges,” he said.“They usually do not pay much attention to the design and ornamental value, and look for things made of gold, without any stones or decorative material, Khalid added. “They mostly go for chains, bracelets and rings of 21K or higher."Meanwhile, a number of gold shop owners pointed out that younger customers are increasingly seeking personalised jewellery, custom-made pieces, and minimalist designs suitable for everyday wear, while traditional customers continue to invest in heavier, old-style ornaments.Shopping trends are also experiencing a major transformation with the extensive use of digital technology, as many retailers post their updated collection catalogues and heavily use social media marketing to attract younger consumers.However, small gold shops and workshops in key areas of Doha, especially at souqs, are expected to remain highly competitive and favoured by general customers due to their flexibility in offering various designs and responding to special customer demands, in addition to their willingness to tolerate aggressive bargaining of labour charges, which can be 10% to 25% lower than the well-established brands.

Graduation season drives gold sales boom Lower global prices boosting consumer demand

The local gold market has been seeing a significant increase in consumer turnout over the recent periods as the graduation season has enhanced the demand for gold jewellery, with families increasingly choosing precious metal gifts to celebrate academic achievements of their children and relatives. Such seasonal surge in demand has coincided with a notable drop in global gold prices, making purchases more attractive for both gift-giving and investment purposes. Accordingly, some gold retailers across Doha noted that graduation gifts have become the primary driver of sales during the current period, surpassing demand typically associated with other seasonal occasions. Consumers are particularly seeking bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and compact jewellery sets, while customised pieces engraved with graduates’ names or initials have gained remarkable popularity due to their emotional and celebratory value. The strong demand has also been supported by a decline in international gold prices over the recent weeks. After reaching record highs earlier in 2026, global gold prices experienced a substantial correction during the second quarter due to several related economic and geopolitical factors. However, despite the recent decline, gold continues to be regarded as one of the world’s preferred long-term stores of value. According to some local gold traders, many customers are taking advantage of the lower prices to buy graduation gifts in addition to gold bars as a safe investment. The graduation season coupled with the start of the summer holiday has further stimulated retail activity, with many families purchasing gifts before travelling abroad. Abdulaleem Hussein, a trader in Doha’s Gold Souq, noted that the decline in international prices has encouraged more customers to buy. He said necklaces, bracelets and earrings remain among the best-selling items, while Qatar’s jewellery market continues to distinguish itself through its wide variety of designs and its ability to produce customised pieces inspired by customers’ preferences or social media trends. Similarly, gold trader Ibrahim al-Ameri described the graduation period as one of the busiest times of the year for jewellery retailers. He observed a growing demand for personalised jewellery engraved with graduates’ names or initials, reflecting consumers’ preference for gifts with lasting emotional significance. He added that lower gold prices have also increased interest in gold bullion, which continues to be viewed as a reliable safe-haven investment during periods of economic uncertainty. Ahmed al-Yafei, another retailer in the Gold Souq, confirmed that customer traffic has risen noticeably in recent weeks as buyers seek to capitalise on softer prices while celebrating school and university graduates. He indicated that lightweight jewellery sets, modern bracelets, necklaces and earrings remain the preferred choices among younger consumers. Recent market data also shows that gold prices in Qatar have eased from their June peaks, improving affordability for local consumers and reinforcing buying activity during the current graduation season. The combination of lower international prices, seasonal gifting traditions, and sustained investor confidence is expected to make this year’s graduation period one of the most active seasons for Qatar’s gold market over the recent years.

Festive demand lifts gold jewellery trade in Qatar

Jewellery shops in Qatar are witnessing brisk sales during the Eid al Adha holiday, with customers taking advantage of a modest dip in gold prices to make festive purchases, it is learnt.Market data revealed that in Qatar, 24 karat gold was priced at “QR546.50” per gramme yesterday (May 26), easing slightly from the previous day. Retailers said the modest decline encouraged shoppers to buy during the holiday, reinforcing the seasonal demand pattern that typically lifts sales at this time of year.Shopkeepers added that brisk activity was evident across popular gold souqs and malls, with many customers opting for traditional designs as well as lighter ornaments suited for gifting. “We see families coming in together, often buying sets for weddings or smaller pieces for children,” one jeweller at Souq Waqif explained, noting that Eid remains one of the strongest trading periods of the year.Gold staged a strong rebound in the previous session, gaining “1.35%” to settle at “$4,570” per ounce, according to Vijay Valecha, chief investment officer at Century Financial. According to Valecha, the metal was trading “0.83%” lower at “$4,532,” reflecting cautious sentiment amid regional uncertainty.Valecha observed that the recent decline in oil prices over the past week had helped ease inflation concerns, “providing further support to bullion.”Despite the current pullback, Valecha maintained that “the overall technical outlook for gold remains positive.” Prices continue to hold above a key ascending trendline support on the four hour chart that has been intact since May 19, he noted.“As long as gold sustains above the crucial $4,515 level, which falls on the trendline support, the intraday bullish structure remains valid, with expectations of a potential rebound from current levels,” Valecha said.He identified immediate resistance at the previous session high of “$4,580,” followed by the 50 day simple moving average at “$4,648.” Silver, meanwhile, was quoted at “$76.49,” down “2%,” with support at “$74” and resistance at “$78.79.”Valecha also pointed to macro factors, including energy price movements, inflation expectations, and currency dynamics, as likely to keep prices well supported, even as near term volatility persists. Analysts generally view bullion’s safe haven role as intact, with investors and households turning to gold during periods of uncertainty.For retailers in Qatar, the combination of festive demand and supportive market fundamentals has created a favourable environment. “Customers are buying during dips, and Eid has always been a strong period for jewellery sales,” one shop manager pointed out.He noted that while high prices remain a challenge for some buyers, the cultural significance of gifting gold during Eid continues to underpin demand. Traders expect momentum to carry through the week, with many shops extending hours to accommodate the surge in foot traffic, the shopkeeper added.
