Booked late, flown full: Travellers wait longer before buying

Three in four Qatar Airways passengers now book within 60 days of departure. Hamad al-Khater, the airline's Group Chief Executive, gave the figure in a Bloomberg Television interview in New York on 20 September, on the sidelines of the Qatar Economic Forum's UNGA edition.The pattern extends across the industry. Since the regional conflict began at the end of February, travellers have waited longer before buying. Airspace closures, fuel prices and schedule changes have made people cautious about committing months ahead. They book once they are confident the trip will go ahead.European airlines reported the same pattern in the spring. easyJet chief executive Kenton Jarvis said "the booking window has shortened" and pointed to strong demand in the month of travel. Turkish Airlines chair Murat Seker told investors that long-term visibility resembled the pandemic period. Barclays analyst Andrew Lobbenberg said European holidaymakers were booking late and airlines were cutting fares to prompt them.Demand has held, especially in premium cabins. IATA recorded a global passenger load factor of 85.2% in July, and international demand outside the Middle East rose 1.5% year on year. Middle East carriers filled 80.9% of seats, and IATA said the region's decline had eased after double-digit falls earlier in the year. Those are sound numbers for a peak month. The bookings arrived later in the cycle.Premium cabins have performed best. Delta's premium revenue rose 17% in the June quarter, and in each of the first two quarters of 2026 its premium revenue equalled its economy revenue. American plans to increase premium seating by 50% by the end of the decade. United is refitting aircraft with fewer seats and more premium cabins.Business travellers have always booked close to departure. Meetings, deals and board dates are set a few weeks out, and the ticket follows. Airlines with large premium cabins and strong corporate accounts were already selling a high share of their most valuable seats late. The wider market has moved towards their pattern, which leaves them best placed.Revenue management tends to feel this most directly. Airline pricing systems typically use historical booking curves to forecast how many seats a flight should have sold at 180, 90 and 30 days before departure. When most bookings arrive in the last eight weeks, the early readings carry less information. A flight that looks weak three months out can be full a fortnight before departure.Airlines have responded by releasing fewer seats at the lowest fares far in advance and holding more inventory for late, higher-paying passengers. Forecasters are leaning on live data such as search activity, competitor fares and corporate bookings. Market analysis reported by Business Insider in June noted that the traditional booking window was becoming a less reliable planning tool.Network planning is harder. Schedules are fixed many months ahead, and new aircraft are in short supply, with manufacturer backlogs running for years. At eight weeks' notice, the practical option is to move the aircraft already in the fleet.Lufthansa Group has cancelled about 20,000 flights through October, mostly on its least profitable European routes. Qatar Airways has concentrated capacity on its most profitable routes. In both cases, aircraft are going where late demand and yields are strongest.Large hub carriers are well suited to this. A 777 or A350 can be moved between markets within days. A hub collects late bookings from dozens of cities and feeds them onto a single long-haul departure. The bigger the widebody fleet and network, the more options an airline has.Late booking also affects pricing. Jet fuel is about $182 a barrel, roughly 90% above its level on 28 February, and Qatar Airways has so far held off passing the increase on to customers. Some airlines have tried to pull bookings forward. easyJet pledged in May not to add fuel surcharges to packages already booked, and British Airways promised holiday customers that prices would not rise after payment. Passengers who buy in the last few weeks face fuller aircraft and fewer discounted fares. Part of the higher fuel cost will be recovered through those late fares, with no surcharge involved.How long the shorter booking window lasts depends partly on the conflict. The pandemic offers a guide. Airlines introduced flexible fares in 2020, and many kept them because passengers continued to buy them. This year has given travellers another reason to wait before committing.If they keep waiting, airlines will need forecasting, network and fleet plans designed around a shorter horizon. Carriers with strong premium products, flexible widebody fleets and large connecting hubs start from the strongest position.The author is an aviation analyst. X handle: @AlexInAir

Qatar Chamber, Sri Lanka discuss enhancing economic cooperation

Qatar Chamber discussed enhancing economic cooperation with Sri Lanka, as well as investment opportunities available to the private sectors of both countries and ways to enhance communication between business communities.This came in a meeting held by First Vice Chairman of Qatar Chamber, Mohamed bin Ahmed bin Twar Al Kuwari, with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Employment of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Arun Hemachandra.The two sides reviewed investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, particularly in the agricultural sector, as well as potential cooperation in other sectors of mutual interest.In this context, Al Kuwari stressed the importance of strengthening economic and trade relations between Qatar and Sri Lanka, noting Qatar Chamber's commitment to promoting communication between the private sectors of both countries and familiarizing Qatari businesspeople with available investment opportunities.In turn, Hemachandra invited Qatar Chamber and Qatari businesspeople to visit Sri Lanka to explore investment opportunities, learn more about the business environment and the advantages offered by the Sri Lankan economy to investors. He also invited them to participate in 'Sri Lanka Expo 2027,' scheduled to be held in January 2027.

What is a good net profit? And why your business needs a daily ticker

One of the most common questions I am asked by business owners is deceptively simple. What is a good net profit percentage for a business?Most owners are hoping for a comforting number. 10%. Fifteen. Twenty. My answer disappoints them, because it does not start with a target. It starts with a benchmark. Global inflation.The IMF's 2026 World Economic Outlook puts global headline inflation at 4.7%, up from 4.1% last year. Every serious business today is operating inside that reality. Your suppliers price against it. Your costs rise with it. Your competitors abroad are pricing to beat it. Ignoring the global figure does not make it go away. It just means you will feel it later, in the margin you thought you had.The three-times rule.Your net profit target should be at least three times the global inflation rate.At 4.7% global inflation, that means a minimum net profit of around 14% to 15%. Not a stretch goal. A floor. Anything less, and you are not actually building wealth. You are treading water in a current that is moving against you.Here is why three times, not two.At two times the inflation, roughly 9%, you cover the erosion of your existing capital and produce a modest real return. You survive. You do not scale. There is no cushion for the unexpected. No reserve for reinvestment. No compensation for the risk you are carrying as a business owner rather than a fixed-deposit holder.At three times the inflation, the economics change. The first portion covers inflation itself. The second creates real reinvestment capacity. The third produces genuine wealth. Businesses at this level fund their own growth, absorb shocks without panic, and build assets that compound year over year. This is the minimum threshold at which a business becomes an asset rather than a job.What this actually means in numbers.Take a business turning over 10mn riyals a year. At 9% net profit, you produce 900,000 riyals. After tax, reinvestment, and personal drawings, there is almost nothing left to build with. At 15%, you produce 1.5mn riyals. That difference of 600,000 riyals is not incremental. It is transformational. It is the capital that funds the next hire, the next product line, the next market.Now translate this into a daily number. To produce 10mn riyals across roughly 250 working days, you need to average 40,000 riyals of sales per day. That is your ticker. If your gross margin is 40% and your overheads are fixed, you can back-calculate the daily gross profit required to hit your 15% net target and manage the business to that number every morning.Run it like a stock market.The businesses that hit these targets do not wait for month-end reports. They watch a daily sales ticker like traders watch a stock price. Tuesday's number is known before lunch. The weekly running total is compared against target. The variance is discussed openly. Nobody guesses where the business stands.Miss a day, and you know before lunch. Miss three, and the team is already adjusting. That is what discipline looks like when profit targets are treated as commitments, not aspirations.What is your daily sales target, and did you hit it yesterday? If you cannot answer both, your net profit is a wish, not a plan.Mohammed Shabeeb is the National Director of BNI Qatar and Director–GCC for ActionCOACH Business Coaching.

Qatar unveils 5-year pipeline of $60bn projects, opportunities

Qatar has launched a new platform, "Doha Investment," to manage and grow the Qatar Investment Authority's domestic portfolio, as the prime minister unveiled a five-year pipeline of projects and investment opportunities worth more than $60bn.His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani made the announcement in his opening remarks at the Qatar Economic Forum – Powered by Bloomberg, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.The prime minister said the platform builds on three decades of work to construct world-class infrastructure, institutions and companies, and marks Qatar's push to widen private sector participation as a driver of growth. It will back leading companies, help startups scale, deepen capital markets and draw in international capital and expertise, he said, adding that its success would be judged by how far it helps build a more competitive, resilient and diversified economy with a bigger role for the private sector.Over the next five years, Qatar is set to launch new infrastructure projects worth around $38.5bn, including public-private partnerships, with initial tendering to begin immediately, the prime minister said. Alongside these, real estate and hospitality projects are expected to draw private investment of $22.5bn, among them the Simaisma Beach project, projected to attract about $5.8bn, with more announcements to follow. Combined, he said, the projects and opportunities represent a value exceeding $60bn over five years.The prime minister said the aim is to pair public infrastructure with private capital and international expertise, with Qatar seeking partners bringing technological innovation, market access and a commitment to long-term partnership.**media[494053]**He added that Qatar does not underestimate the current climate of uncertainty but will not let short-term disruption dictate its long-term direction, and that it works to bolster regional stability through diplomacy while pursuing reform, resilience and growth through investment.Diplomacy and economic stability go hand in hand, he said, since diplomacy safeguards the conditions that let people trade, invest and plan ahead — and lasting security cannot rest on cycles of escalation and retaliation, or on arrangements that leave any state permanently exposed.On the current regional crisis, the prime minister said talks would need to begin with security and de-escalation before moving to energy supplies, shipping routes and the fate of investment plans. The region needs a framework built on respect for sovereignty, in which no state threatens another, he said, adding that Qatar would remain a committed mediator, a reliable energy supplier and a long-term investment partner.He described recent regional events as an "earthquake" whose aftershocks have reached far beyond the region's borders, upending long-held assumptions about security and stability. Doha, he said, has worked with regional and international partners to keep communication channels open, ease tensions and support diplomatic understandings — recognising that economic resilience depends on institutions, infrastructure and partnerships built before crises hit.The crisis tested these foundations as activity was disrupted and costs rose, he said, yet Qatar's financial system kept running and companies carried on operating — resilience he attributed to years of preparation under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.The prime minister affirmed that Qatar's economic fundamentals remain solid, and said the expansion of the North Field would reinforce the country's standing as a reliable energy supplier and support its diversification drive — energy, he said, is Qatar's source of strength, diversification its secret to resilience, and technology its future.

Qatar remains committed to advancing its long-term economic expansion plans, including a new energy project that will double liquefied natural gas production capacity to 145mn tonnes per year by 2030 despite the damage sustained by facilities.The commitment was highlighted Sunday during an interview featuring Qatar Central Bank Governor His Excellency Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani with Bloomberg TV on the sidelines of the Special Edition of the Qatar Economic Forum 2026, Powered by Bloomberg, convened in New York alongside the UN General Assembly.“The non-hydrocarbon sector grew by 3.5% despite regional challenges, while the State of Qatar successfully reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio from 60% to 40%, while maintaining a sovereign credit rating of AA,” noted Sheikh Bandar, who is also chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA).He said the contribution of the non-hydrocarbon sector to GDP increased from 40% in 2011 to approximately 70% in recent years, supported by the accumulation of fiscal surpluses over the past years, as well as the establishment of reserves and funds that provide the economy with greater resilience in addressing the challenges.According to Sheikh Bandar, Qatar enjoys a strong external financial position and substantial reserves held by the central bank, alongside operating one of the largest sovereign wealth funds globally.These financial strengths enhance the country's ability to navigate challenges and capitalise on growth opportunities as regional conditions improve, he pointed out.“The Qatar Investment Authority is pursuing a long-term investment strategy aimed at creating sustainable value for future generations, with an increasing focus on technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation, particularly in the US, while continuing to invest across a range of sectors in support of its broader diversification strategy,” he said.Meanwhile, the QCB is implementing 18 artificial intelligence projects, four of which have been completed, Sheikh Bandar noted.“These projects have contributed to reducing costs and accelerating workflows, while the QCB remains committed to continued investment in this technology and to leveraging its potential to further develop and enhance its operations,” he said.Sheikh Bandar added that the central bank remains committed to continued investment in technology to enhance its overall operations.
