South Korean President ​Lee Jae Myung held talks Wednesday with Indonesian leader Prabowo Subianto, discussing energy security and agreeing ‌to expand cooperation in ⁠areas such as ‌defence, Lee's office said.The summit talks ‌followed a welcome ceremony at the presidential Blue House in Seoul. "We view Indonesia's stable ⁠role in supplying key energy resources such as LNG and coal as very reassuring," Lee said in a statement, calling for closer cooperation on energy supply and resource security amid the global uncertainty triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.In a joint statement, South Korea and Indonesia pledged to accelerate the launch of high-level energy security dialogue and public-private cooperation channels, emphasising the need to keep global energy ​supply chains stable and minimise disruptions to the flow of energy and essential goods.Indonesia is the world's largest exporter of thermal coal, while South Korea has been among the five biggest ‌importers of the fuel in recent ⁠years, according to ​Korean government data.South Korea also imported about 2.1mn tonnes of liquefied ​natural gas (LNG) from Indonesia in 2025, data showed. The Indonesian president arrived in Seoul from Japan where Jakarta agreed to step up coordination with Tokyo on energy security.Prabowo described South Korea and Indonesia as natural partners with "complementary roles", pointing to South Korea's industrial and technological strengths and Indonesia's abundant resources and large market.South Korea's exports to Indonesia stood at $7bn in 2025, while imports were $11.3bn, trade data showed.Lee and Prabowo also oversaw the signing of multiple preliminary agreements, including support for projects in renewable energy and data centres as the countries elevate their relationship ‌into a strategic partnership.Prabowo, a former general, also said ⁠that strong defence capabilities were essential, saying peace and stability required "robust security and defence."No ⁠deals were announced on defence ⁠cooperation, but in the joint statement the leaders confirmed the countries' joint project to develop South Korea's homegrown KF-21 fighter jet, underway for over a decade, is on track for completion in June 2026.They committed to cooperate on a follow-up project — called IF-21 — as well as other defence items such as trainer aircraft, anti-tank guided missile systems and ammunition.Korea Aerospace ​Industries last month said it was in talks with Indonesia on a potential sale of KF-21 fighter jets, but said no decisions had been made. Media reports said that Jakarta was considering purchasing an initial batch of 16 aircraft.South Korea expects Indonesia to complete a payment related to the joint development programme by the end of this year, an official told Reuters. The countries were expected to also strengthen co-operation in new growth areas such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure, shipbuilding, nuclear power, energy conversion, and cultural industries, ‌the Blue House said ​in an earlier statement. 

The Saudi Ministry of Defence announced Monday the interception and destruction of five drones.Spokesperson of the Saudi Ministry of Defence, Major General Staff Turki Al Maliki, stated that the five drones were intercepted and destroyed in the past few hours.Earlier today, the Saudi Ministry of Defence announced the detection and interception of five ballistic missiles targeting the Eastern Province.

EU Council President Antonio Costa said Tuesday he was confident Britain and ​the European Union would ‌reach a deal on UK participation ‌in the ⁠bloc's multi-billion-euro SAFE defence fund, despite talks ‌over the issue breaking down in November.A British plan ⁠to join the original 150 billion euro ($174 billion) SAFE fund fell through after the government of Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer refused to pay a financial contribution to join.However, Costa pointed to warmer ties between Britain and the EU, with ​Starmer consistently pushing for a post-Brexit "reset" with the bloc as grounds for hope of a deal.He also ‌highlighted how Britain and ⁠France were ​jointly leading Ukraine's "Coalition of the Willing" as ​a reason why he believed a deal would be reached."The new Labour government has started the reset, and the reset is going well," Costa said in a speech at Paris' Sciences Po university."It could take some weeks, months, but for sure, we will achieve an agreement with the UK on the SAFE issue," ‌he said.Last month, Starmer ‌said his government ⁠would consider applying to join a second possible ⁠EU SAFE fund. ⁠Under the initiative, the EU jointly borrowed money on financial markets to lend to countries in the bloc for defence.Asked about Costa's remarks, a British government source said the UK would only sign agreements that ​were in its national interest, and noted that British firms remained a vital part of defence supply chains across Europe.The source said the UK's defence industry continued to have access to SAFE under standard third-country terms, which allow British companies to participate in SAFE-funded arrangements for up to 35% of a ‌project's value. 

Ukraine and Romania Thursday signed a statement of intent to produce drones together in Romania during a visit to Bucharest by President Volodymyr Zelensky aimed at deepening defence co-operation.Zelensky also offered to develop anti-drone defence systems with Kyiv's European allies.The visit – followed by a trip to Paris today – comes at a time of uncertainty over planned peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow that have been spearheaded by the United States and derailed by the US-Israeli war with Iran.Zelensky and Romanian President Nicusor Dan signed an agreement on the joint production of defence products in Romania, and another on energy co-operation, the two sides said."We discussed our military co-operation, and one of the documents signed refers to the joint production of drones in Romania," Dan said during a joint press conference.Both countries will consider drone production in Romania in the "shortest possible time," according to the statement of intent.The project would be partially funded through the EU's SAFE Initiative with up to 200 million euros ($230 million), it added.Nato-member Romania – an important ally of Kyiv's – has seen repeated violations of its airspace, including drone fragments falling onto its soil, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.Zelensky, who has dispatched teams to the Gulf to help allies fend off Iranian drones, offered Thursday to work with European allies to develop their defensive systems."I think it would be quite good to develop all of this together with European countries, our neighbours, our friends," Zelensky said.The Ukrainian leader also said the two Black Sea countries were deepening energy ties, noting the construction of two new electricity supply lines.Ukraine has become increasingly dependent on electricity imports from its European neighbours since the start of Russian attacks on its power grid. 

The Ministry of Defence announced today that the State of Qatar was subjected Saturday, to an attack involving 10 ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles launched from the Islamic Republic of Iran.In a statement, the ministry said that the armed forces successfully intercepted six ballistic missiles, while two ballistic missiles fell in Qatar’s territorial waters, and two others landed in an uninhabited area without causing any casualties. The armed forces also intercepted two cruise missiles.The ministry stressed that the Qatari Armed Forces possess the full capabilities and resources to protect and safeguard the sovereignty and territory of the state and to firmly confront any external threat.It also called on citizens, residents, and visitors to remain calm, follow the instructions issued by security authorities, avoid rumors, and rely only on statements and information issued by official sources.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced today that Italy will send air defenses to support Gulf states currently under attack from Iran.In a statement, Meloni said, "Italy, like the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, intends to send aid to the Gulf countries".She said the support comes not just because "they are friendly nations but because there are tens of thousands of Italians there", along with "around 2,000 Italian soldiers that must be protect."Meloni revealed that authorizations ​are in place for the United States to use its bases in Italy for operations that do not include bombing, noting that any change to this would require the approval of the government and parliament.

The Ministry of Defence has disclosed the full scale of its military response since the start of Iranian aggression, confirming that its air defence systems have successfully intercepted the vast majority of aerial and missile attacks launched against the country.In a comprehensive tally, the military confirmed the interception of two SU-24 fighter jets, three cruise missiles, 98 out of 101 ballistic missiles, and 24 out of 39 drones. Among the intercepted threats were two ballistic missiles that targeted several areas within Qatar, both of which were neutralised before reaching Qatari territory. The ministry stressed that the threat was identified and engaged immediately upon detection, in line with pre-approved operational plans."Qatar Armed Forces possess full capabilities and resources to safeguard and defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and to respond firmly to any external threat," the ministry said.Separately, Qatar's International Media Office moved to rebuff a Bloomberg report suggesting that the Qatar Armed Forces' inventory of Patriot interceptor missiles had been depleted, calling the claim flatly false.In a pointed statement, the Office said the Patriot stockpile "has not been depleted and remains well-stocked," adding that the Armed Forces "remain at full readiness to protect all citizens, residents, and visitors for as long as necessary." The Office called the publication of such claims without official verification "deeply irresponsible, especially during this fast-moving and highly sensitive period," and said it was reviewing legal options to have the misinformation corrected.On the domestic security front, the Ministry of Interior has been issuing a steady stream of directives urging the public to remain indoors and leave their homes only when absolutely necessary, keeping away from windows and exposed areas. Residents are being told to follow instructions exclusively from official sources and to avoid spreading unverified information.Security agencies, the Ministry of Interior confirmed, are conducting continuous field operations through an integrated command system in close coordination with all relevant authorities, maintaining the highest levels of readiness as the situation continues to evolve.
