Kane tipped to beat Yamal, Mbappe to Ballon d'Or glory

Harry Kane is favourite to become England's first Ballon d'Or winner in 25 years when the award is presented in London on Monday, but he faces stiff competition from La Liga pair Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe.Alexia Putellas is the clear frontrunner to win the women's prize for a third time, with Aitana Bonmati's three-year reign set to come to an end after an injury-hit spell.The ceremony to decide the world's best male and female footballers is being held in London for the first time -- 70 years after England winger Stanley Matthews was presented with the inaugural award.Bayern Munich and England forward Kane struck a remarkable 73 goals in 65 games for club and country last season, propelling the German giants to a league and cup double.But semi-final exits in both the Champions League and at the World Cup in the United States mean a triumph for Kane at the London Palladium is far from certain."I'd love to be able to achieve something like that. It would be a massive milestone in my career," said the 33-year-old former Tottenham forward."I think my wife would prefer to know and my family... it's very stressful for everyone," added the England captain.Only four players from England have won the Ballon d'Or. Michael Owen was the last to triumph in 2001, following in the footsteps of Matthews, Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan.Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised Kane's focus on his team, saying: "What made Harry happy the most in recent years is that he finally won his first team trophies here."Now if he can crown his career or his season with the Ballon d'Or, that would be deserved for the way he plays for the team." 'I DESERVE IT'Yamal finished second to Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele last year and the 19-year-old Barcelona superstar seems destined to be a Ballon d'Or winner one day.However, a hamstring injury ended his club season early and he failed to show his most irresistible form during Spain's World Cup triumph, which was built on impressive teamwork.But that has not diminished his confidence ahead of the ceremony."For me, Mbappe and me, we're the two best players in the world," Yamal said last month."I honestly think that, as the best in the world, maybe there are two of us, and this year I would deserve it because of what I've won."Mbappe, by contrast, boasts plenty of personal milestones without medals for either Real Madrid or France.The 27-year-old was top goalscorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the World Cup without winning any of those trophies.His 10 World Cup goals in North America made him the top goalscorer in the competition's history, on 22."Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," said Mbappe."Who am I voting for? Myself."The Ballon d'Or was established by the magazine France Football, with the first award given to Matthews in 1956.One football journalist from each of the 100 top nations in FIFA's rankings is invited to cast votes for their top 10 players from a 30-man shortlist.Although the award carries no cash prize, it can generate huge bonuses from clubs and commercial partners as well as increasing a player's overall market value.Putellas, winner of the women's award in 2021 and 2022, was a member of the Barcelona side that regained the Champions League last season before moving to London City Lionesses.Her former Barcelona team-mate, Poland's Ewa Pajor, is Putellas's main challenger after scoring 11 Champions League goals in Barca's latest triumph.

Yamal stays cool at boiling Galatasaray to lift Barcelona to victory

Barcelona and Lamine Yamal rediscovered their sparkle after a rocky first-half spell in the cauldron of Istanbul's Ali Sami Yen stadium to win 4-1 away to Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday. Yamal tore the hosts apart after half time. "It's incredible to have players like that," said Barcelona coach Hansi Flick. "He's turned the game around for us."Halfway through the second round of matches, the victory lifted Barcelona to the top of the Champions League table with two wins. Galatasaray are pointless and near the foot of the standings. "We're at a very high level. We have to keep going; the season is very long. We can't relax," Barcelona's Fermin Lopez told Spanish broadcaster Movistar.Barcelona dominated the early stages. With Yamal vigorously policed on the right by the home defence, many of their attacks flowed through Anthony Gordon on the other flank. Yet Galatasaray took the lead after 27 minutes. After Gordon went tumbling in the penalty box, the hosts launched a rapid counter-attack through Rafael Leao on the left.He pulled the ball back to the edge of the area to Russian Aleksei Batrakov whose drive deflected off Joao Cancelo and into the corner of the goal. "That goal made things a bit strange for us, because we had been dominating. But we knew how to react and come back," said Fermin.That ignited a spell of furious home pressure which culminated with Victor Osimhen rising to head a corner past goalkeeper Joan Garcia. Baris Yilmaz toed the ball over the line but was ruled offside. Barcelona reasserted control. When Yamal went down on the edge of the box, the ball broke to a surprised Davinson Sanchez who gave the ball away immediately. It fell to Dani Olmo who threaded a pass to Cancelo who scored. At the start of the second half Yamal took over. After setting up Gordon, who spurned the chance, he helped put Barca ahead in the 50th minute, placing a gentle curled cross on the forehead of Fermin who nodded home. "He's a friend and a great team-mate," said Fermin of Yamal. "When he has the ball, I always look for a run. He's the best in the world. We get along well off the field, and that shows on the pitch, too." - 'Everyone's watching Lamine' - Three minutes later, Yamal beat Eren Elmali three times, and in three different ways, in a tiny space before rolling a pass to Gordon in front of goal.This time the England striker made no mistake with Elmali, a Turkey international, lifting his arms to the heavens in an expression of powerlessness.After 65 minutes Yamal cut in from his wing and fired a pass to replacement centre forward Gabriel Jesus. The ex-Arsenal man could not control the ball but it deflected to Karim Adeyemi who drilled the ball home. "When you see the chances Lamine creates in every training session, it's the same in matches," said Flick. "I have a lot of top-quality players. Everyone's watching Lamine - that's only natural." Yamal could have scored himself but after being quickest to a loose ball he fired his shot over the bar. The 19-year-old finished the game without a goal which would have taken him closer to Kylian Mbappe's record for Champions League goals as a teenager, but Yamal, who became Barcelona's youngest ever captain in the previous round, again took over the captain's armband when Pedri was replaced.

Spain brush aside Croatia in Nations League, England down Czechs

Lamine Yamal netted a brace as world champions Spain continued their winning start to the UEFA Nations League with a 4-1 success in Seville against Croatia on Tuesday, while Harry Kane scored as England won in the Czech Republic.The match at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan was Spain's first home outing since lifting the World Cup in New York in July.La Roja captain Rodri was handed the trophy by 2010 winner and Sevilla legend Jesus Navas, before presenting it to the ecstatic crowd."We were very excited to bring the trophy here," Yamal said."To be able to win the game and bring it home is great."Spain's supporters did not have long to wait before their side provided further excitement in Andalusia as Yamal fired them into the lead inside 75 seconds.Dion Beljo nodded in Ivan Perisic's cross to briefly level the scores shortly before the half-hour, but Atletico defender Marc Pubill popped up at the other end three minutes later to head in a Yamal centre and restore the hosts' lead.After also scoring early in Spain's 3-2 win at Wembley against England last week to kickstart their Nations League campaign, Yamal brought his tally in the 2026/27 edition of the tournament to three as he put Spain two clear of Croatia in the 63rd minute with a precise finish at Dominik Livakovic's near post."Lamine is keen to keep developing and show the world the sort of footballer he is," Luis de la Fuente said of the 19-year-old star."We've enjoyed his magic in the service of the team. In the future, he'll be much more recognised for what he does and for his contribution to the team's play," the coach added of Yamal, who is among the frontrunners for the Ballon d'Or.Nico Williams then put gloss on the result for Spain with a crisp step-over and finish with one minute remaining on the clock.With two wins from two, Spain lead Group A3 on six points, while Croatia sit third on three points, behind second-placed England on goal difference. 'DESERVED VICTORY'In Prague, Thomas Tuchel's England got their first win of the group with a 2-0 victory over 10-man Czech Republic thanks to second-half goals from Anthony Gordon and Kane.The home team kept England at bay in the first half at the Fortuna Arena despite being a man down after Pavel Sulc was sent off for a high challenge on Elliot Anderson in the 23rd minute."We played very professional, second half we stepped up... Deserved victory," Tuchel told ITV."Strange to get an early red card, not the best for the team and spectators. It's an awkward one but we kept going, got a win and that's what counts."Barcelona winger Gordon broke the deadlock shortly after the break with a header from a cross served by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made his first England start in almost two years.It was Gordon's third goal in three games for England, including one against Argentina in the World Cup semi-final defeat and another against Spain.Kane, who also scored against Spain, gave England breathing space in the 69th minute, smashing the ball past Czech 'keeper Matej Kovar after it fell to him inside the box.England will travel to Rijeka to take on Croatia on Saturday, while Spain welcome the Czechs to Oviedo."The next match is important for us against a direct opponent and we want to win," Tuchel said to the BBC.Elsewhere, Scotland paid for an early red card at Hampden Park against Switzerland as the visitors ran out 3-0 winners in Group B1.Slovenia sit second in that pool after downing North Macedonia 2-0 in Ljubljana.

Flick supporting 'self-confident' Yamal Ballon d'Or bid

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Tuesday he will support teenage winger Lamine Yamal's bid to win the Ballon d'Or, noting the player's "self-confidence" on and off the pitch.The 19-year-old forward, who won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barca last season, said Sunday he believes he deserves the individual accolade.Yamal claimed in an interview with Movistar that he and Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe were the two best players in the world and that his teams' success should put him first, when the award is decided on October 26."I think he's honest, has the self-confidence and shows in the beginning of the season how good he is," Flick told reporters.Yamal has scored seven goals in Barca's last four games, helping the Catalan giants maintain a 100 percent start to the season.Flick said although he would have preferred the teenager not to have spoken about it, he accepts it as part of the winger's self-belief."He's exceptional and it's a part of this... I would not prefer this, but he's doing this. He has self-confidence, he wants to win the Ballon d'Or."As a player it's an important thing. He's honest, it's his feeling and we have to accept it. I will support him of course." EVERYONE GOES 'WOW'Flick said Yamal's confidence was also what makes him such a spectacular player to watch.The youngster made his debut for the club at 15 years old and finished as runner-up in last year's Ballon d'Or award behind Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele."He also shows his self-confidence on the pitch and for us this is important," continued Flick."We all want him to play how he plays, and this is a style of confidence. One against one, or two, or three... everyone in the stadium goes 'wow'. This is Lamine and I will support him."It's amazing to have a player like him. When he's of the opinion he deserves it, I think also he deserves it. He won two titles with us, the World Cup with Spanish national team, why not?"There's a lot of world class players on the list, so it's not easy. They will decide and I'll be very happy when it's finished." HARRY KANE ALSO AMONG FAVOURITESBayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane is also among the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or.La Liga leaders Barca welcome promoted side Racing Santander to Camp Nou on Wednesday as they bid to maintain their perfect start to the season.Barcelona's rebuilt stadium will host the Champions League final in 2029, European football governing body UEFA announced earlier Tuesday.Flick, whose contract with the club ends in 2028, said he did not know if he would still be managing Barca by then."I'm 100 percent there... as a coach or as a supporter of Barca," said the coach."We never know what happens. Football is very fast. I enjoy staying in Barcelona, coaching Barca, this is a fantastic team, but in the end you don't know what happens."

This year I deserve Ballon d'Or: Barca's Yamal

Lamine Yamal believes he and Kylian Mbappe are the two best players in the world and said he deserves to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or after a trophy-laden year with Barcelona and Spain. "For me, Mbappe and me, we're the two best players in the world," the 19-year-old Barcelona winger said in an interview on Movistar Plus, excerpts of which were published on Sunday."I honestly think that, as the best in the world, maybe there are two of us, and this year I would deserve it because of what I've won," he added. Yamal helped Barcelona retain La Liga before becoming a world champion with Spain this summer, strengthening his claim for the game's most prestigious individual award.He had struck a more measured tone at a press conference last Tuesday, saying he believed he had a chance after an "incredible" season but would not beg for votes.Mbappe, meanwhile, has also made his case for the award in recent days. The France captain finished as top scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the World Cup, although Real Madrid failed to win a major trophy.Yamal's Barcelona and Spain teammate Ousmane Dembele, last year's winner, believes the award should remain with a Paris Saint-Germain player after the French club retained the Champions League. Bayern Munich striker and England international Harry Kane is also among the favourites to win the award, which will be issued in London on October 26.rbs/ane

Barcelona star Yamal says will not beg for Ballon d'Or

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal said he will not beg for the Ballon d'Or trophy after winning the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with the Catalan giants.On Monday, Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe made his case to win the trophy, highlighting his World Cup Golden Boot win, which also saw him become the competition's all-time top goalscorer. Yamal, 19, thought he had played very well while winning trophies for club and country but said he was happy to let others decide whether he deserved the prize.The teenager, Mbappe, Harry Kane, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are the main candidates to win the award at the ceremony in London on October 26."I don't think I need to (make a campaign for it), I'm not thinking about what I deserve, everyone can think what they like," Yamal told reporters. "I'm proud of everything I've done this year with my club and with the national team. We've become world champions, we've won the league again. I can't ask for anything more. I think... I've shown an incredible level, it's (the media's) job and I will not beg for anything."Yamal came second in last year's Ballon d'Or voting behind PSG star Dembele. France forward Dembele recently said that Kvaratskhelia, Kane and Mbappe would be in his top three to win the award."He's a friend of Kylian, right?" joked Yamal of the French winger, formerly of Barcelona. "The truth is I don't care, I'm very happy with the year I had, when I played against both of them together I must have annoyed them."Spain knocked out France in the World Cup semi-finals with a convincing 2-0 victory. Yamal suffered a hamstring injury in April and has only just returned to his best level.The winger appeared unhappy at the start of the season but seemed far more cheerful as he netted two goals against Rayo Vallecano and Valencia in his last two outings. "In the end, I'm 19, coming off winning a World Cup, having had the best holidays of my life," said Yamal. "I've never been happier at any point in my life than I am now."The teenager said a key ambition this season was to aim for the "very special" Champions League trophy, with Barcelona beginning their campaign today at home against Dutch side Feyenoord.Barca last won the trophy in 2015, led by the Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar attacking trident. Under coach Hansi Flick they reached the semi-finals in 2025 and then the quarter-finals last season."Every big club is dreaming about this because this is the best competition," said the German. "We have the quality to win this, but there's a long way (to go)."Flick hailed Yamal and said the most important thing was that the Spaniard is enjoying himself on the pitch. "Lamine is a player who can decide games on his own, fantastic quality," added Flick. "It's great, you can see it every day how he is enjoying playing football. For me the best thing is that he enjoys this game and then he's on a top level."Yamal will be the favourite to win a third consecutive best young player award at the Ballon d'Or ceremony. He was one of 10 players nominated, including Johan Manzambi, Yan Diomande and Ayyoub Bouaddi, who all impressed at the World Cup and were then the subject of big-money summer transfers.

Lamine Yamal struck twice for Barcelona as they demolished Valencia 5-0 on Sunday to maintain their 100 percent start in La Liga. The reigning champions moved three points clear at the top of La Liga, after Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Real Betis on Friday.Fermin Lopez, Raphinha and Pedri were also on target for Hansi Flick's swaggering visitors on a hot afternoon on Spain's east coast. Yamal did not take part in the team training session on Saturday after a knock but showed no signs of it during a dazzling display against Carlos Corberan's Los Che.Barcelona, the only team in the top flight to win their first four games, took control from the start to the upset of Valencia's fans at a persistently bad-tempered Mestalla stadium. Yamal opened the scoring with a clever lofted finish in the sixth minute after Lopez dinked a superb ball over the top for the teenage star.The 19-year-old slammed home at the near post for what he thought was Barca's second goal but the goal was disallowed for a tight offside after a VAR review. Lopez netted the second with a crisp finish in the 22nd minute after former Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon teed him up.Barcelona suffered a blow when Eric Garcia had to go off hurt midway through the first half after a collision with team-mate Rodri's shoulder, on the midfielder's first start since arriving this summer from Manchester City. Yamal fired narrowly wide and Lopez struck the post as Flick's side continued to dominate. Barca goalkeeper Joan Garcia made a smart save to thwart Arnaut Danjuma at his near post before the break.Raphinha, starting again as the team's centre-forward, tapped home his sixth goal of the season from close range after Lopez fed him. Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski saved from Rodri before Pedri netted Barcelona's fourth after an exchange of passes with Dani Olmo.New arrival Gabriel Jesus came on for his Barca debut as a substitute in the final 10 minutes and sent a low effort just wide. Yamal stayed onside to collect another Olmo pass and put away Barca's fifth and conclude a profitable afternoon for both the World Cup winner and the Catalan giants.

'Emotional' Argentina, Lionel Messi chase repeat World Cup title against Spain

Lionel Messi and Argentina will try to become the first team to defend a World Cup title since 1962 in the final on Sunday against a Spanish side that could boast the next generation's greatest player in Lamine Yamal.The path to the afternoon kickoff in East Rutherford, N.J., has been decidedly more emotional for Argentina, who twice came from behind and twice required extra time during the knockout phase.That included two late goals assisted by the current generation's greatest player -- 39-year-old Messi. Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored in a dramatic 2-1 win over slightly favored England in Wednesday's semifinal.But manager Lionel Scaloni said the outbursts of emotions that have accompanied each win are exactly what is needed to process such a run, which may well be Messi's last. It's also a reflection of the seismic support that has followed the Albiceleste to stadiums across the United States. RECOVERY 'EXTREMELY VALUABLE'"We've recovered something which is extremely valuable, which is the fact that people are watching our games on TV, wearing the Argentinian jersey and hugging each other," Scaloni said through an interpreter. "This feeling of unity, we really feel it. People are with us, supporting us and backing us. And that's very emotional for us. And it's good to express emotions. I believe that's part of life. It's part of what we are. And that makes you even more human."Incredibly, Messi enters the weekend tied with France's Kylian Mbappe for the tournament lead with eight goals, and with four assists is one shy of Mbappe's teammate Michael Olise. .After winning Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024 with Argentina, Messi is attempting to help his homeland become the third back-to-back World Cup champion, following Italy in 1934 and 1938, and Pele's Brazil in 1958 and 1962.Meanwhile, his teammates have been trying to embrace the moment, a luxury they didn't have in 2022 when they shouldered the pressure of ending a 36-year World Cup drought. 'ENJOYING THE WORLD CUP'"I am enjoying this World Cup much more than the one in Qatar," admitted 33-year-old goalkeeper Emi Martinez through an interpreter. "And for me, being in my fifth final with a national team, well, I don't want to take credit away from me. I am eternally thankful to my teammates, and I just want to enjoy. I'm going to jump on the pitch with a smile, as this is something that many players cannot achieve."Neither the 1938 Italy nor the 1962 Brazil national teams faced a final opponent as revered as the Spaniards, the defending European champions and three-time UEFA Nations League finalists.Other than a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in their opener, Spain have rarely looked seriously in jeopardy and were dominant in a 2-0 semifinal victory over favored France.And they've done all of this with only one goal from the 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, who began the tournament still working back to 90-minute fitness after recovering from a left hamstring strain sustained in mid-April playing for FC Barcelona. COMPARISON UNWISEThe presence of Messi on the other team will bring comparisons for Lamine, whose only goal came in a 4-0 group-stage win over Saudi Arabia. But Spain manager Luis de la Fuente said comparison is unwise."Messi is a one-of-a-time-in-history player, and he's an example, a role model for youth and younger players, his attitude, his behavior," de la Fuente said through an interpreter. "Lamine has to be Lamine Yamal himself, and the best way we can support him is by helping him be the person we know today because he has a great potential, a great future."Spain are looking for their second World Cup crown after their 2010 triumph in South Africa with an earlier generation.With Fabian Ruiz, Dani Olmo and Rodri in midfield, this group is arguably as talented, if not necessarily as flamboyant, as that 2010 group. And they insist they are just as determined to leave their own legacy."We are very much satisfied with the team's process, but we are far more ambitious than this," Rodri said through an interpreter. "We have a great challenge ahead of us on Sunday, a very beautiful challenge in order to make (people) proud of this generation."

World Cup gets set for pair of blockbuster semi-finals

A month after the expanded, 48-team tournament kicked off, the World Cup is down to the semi-final stage with France and Spain preparing to face off on Tuesday before holders Argentina renew their bitter rivalry with England the following day.The South Americans and their talisman Lionel Messi were the last team to clinch a spot in the final four when they overcame 10-man Switzerland in extra time late Saturday in Kansas City.A stunning strike by Julian Alvarez and a Lautaro Martinez goal right at the death settled that quarter-final in Argentina's favour after Switzerland's Dan Ndoye had responded to Alexis Mac Allister's opener to force extra time.Argentina are bidding to become the first team to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1962, and now head to Atlanta to play an England side led by Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.Aiming to win a first major trophy since 1966, England had Bellingham to thank on Saturday as his two goals secured a 2-1 extra-time win over Norway in Miami."The result is fantastic. The last four is amazing, but not happy with the performance... we were very lucky today," admitted England coach Thomas Tuchel.It is just the fourth time England have reached a World Cup semi-final, after 1966, 1990 and 2018. They have lost their last two, while Argentina have won on each of their six previous semi-final appearances.Wednesday's clash comes 40 years after a seismic encounter in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals in Mexico.Argentina secured a 2-1 victory at the Estadio Azteca with two goals from Diego Maradona - one the infamous "Hand of God", and the other a dazzling solo effort considered one of the greatest ever World Cup goals.For Maradona's heir, Messi, it will be his 206th international appearance, but his first ever against England.The match will also take place against the backdrop of a lingering sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.Britain sent a military taskforce in 1982 to reclaim the islands after Argentine troops invaded."The message is this is a football game. That's what I can say," insisted Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni."It is a football game and we will be playing against a very tough opponent. They have an excellent coach and this is a football game and that's all."The winners of that game will advance to the July 19 final at the MetLife Stadium just outside New York City, where they will face France or Spain. Yamal v MbappeFor the first time at a World Cup, the draw was done in such a way as to ensure the four highest-ranked nations were kept apart.Spain, Argentina, France and England were effectively seeded to all avoid each other before the semis, provided they topped their groups.That is exactly what has happened, with France and Spain facing off in Arlington, just outside Dallas, on Tuesday in a repeat of their meeting in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.Spain triumphed 2-1 then before going on to lift the trophy, with Lamine Yamal scoring an exceptional goal days prior to his 17th birthday.This time, the World Cup clash will be played a day after he turns 19, and a large part of Spain's hopes lie with him.However, the Barcelona starlet came into the tournament carrying an injury, and has not had the desired impact so far, scoring only once in six games."I think Lamine needs to calm the anxiety he sometimes has because he wants to show how important a player he is for us," Spain captain Rodri said Sunday."He is a very intelligent kid but it is true that he is only 19 at the end of the day."France's talisman Kylian Mbappe has had an extraordinary impact, scoring eight goals, including one in the quarter-final win over Morocco.Mbappe is tied with Messi in the race for the golden boot, and one behind the Argentine's all-time World Cup record of 21 goals.Spain's conservative ex-prime minister Mariano Rajoy faced criticism Sunday after saying the France team had "no French players".The comment, published in an opinion piece in Spanish online news site El Debate, was condemned by Spain's current Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as "xenophobic".France's Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told French channel BFMTV that Rajoy's comment was "absolutely unacceptable".

Yamal scores on injury return as Spain thrash Saudi Arabia

Lamine Yamal's return sparked Spain's World Cup into life as the European champions ran riot to beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta.Making his first start in two months after a hamstring injury, Yamal ended La Roja's long wait for a World Cup goal just 10 minutes in. Mikel Oyarzabal then struck twice to put Luis de la Fuente's men 3-0 up inside 24 minutes.De la Fuente's careful management of Yamal's minutes continued as the Barcelona superstar was replaced at half-time before Hassan al-Tambakti's own goal rounded off the scoring."We had to recover good feelings, correct a few things from the last game, but we need to keep improving if we want to achieve our target of getting to the final on July 19," said De la Fuente.Victory propels Spain to the top of Group H ahead of Uruguay's meeting with Cape Verde later. Billed as one of the pre-tournament favourites, Spain got off to a slow start in a 0-0 draw against debutants Cape Verde.A pedestrian performance despite dominating possession only highlighted the importance of Yamal to their quest to be world champions for a second time. De la Fuente also warned his players had been "stung" by the criticism they faced following their opening result and they responded emphatically.Yamal's return was one of four changes in total with Pedro Porro, Dani Olmo and Alex Baena also coming into the starting line-up. After over 2,500 passes and 50 attempts at goal since their last World Cup goal, Spain finally found the net and fittingly Yamal made the breakthrough.Oyarzabal found space in behind the Saudi defence and his low cross picked out the 18-year-old to slot in at the back post. The Saudis held Uruguay 1-1 in their opening game but there was little evidence that the billions splashed to raise the level of their domestic league has aided the national team.Coach Georgios Donis looked particularly irked that two of Spain's goals came from corners. Oyarzabal pounced on Aymeric Laporte's flick-on to give the 2010 winners the breathing space they craved. Just three minutes later, the Real Sociedad forward volleyed home from Olmo's header for his 14th international goal in his last 13 caps.Oyarzabal was inches away from a first-half hat-trick when his audacious effort with the outside of his foot from a narrow angle came back off the crossbar. But with the job done by half-time, De la Fuente could afford the luxury of replacing Yamal and Oyarzabal at the break."Had we had a different result, he (Yamal) would've played for longer but given the result and that the match was under control, we considered his contribution was enough for us to have him in the next game," added De la Fuente.The changes did not disrupt the waves of Spanish attack towards the Saudi goal, but the fourth also came via a corner. Cucurella was afforded acres of space to shoot and although his effort was repelled by Mohammed al-Owais, the rebound deflected in off the unfortunate Tambakti.To round off an ideal afternoon for De la Fuente on his 65th birthday, Nico Williams and Mikel Merino were afforded valuable minutes off the bench in the second period as they too get up to match speed after lengthy absences due to injury.By contrast, the pressure is now on Donis to deliver in Saudi Arabia's final group game against Cape Verde in Houston. Victory will likely take the Arabian Falcons into the knockout stages for the first time since the World Cup was last in the United States 32 years ago.Spain travel to Guadalajara next for the final group game against two-time winners Uruguay on Friday.

Spain star Yamal admits he feared missing World Cup

Spanish national team star Lamine Yamal admitted he had been "afraid" of missing the World Cup because of the hamstring injury he is still recovering from.The 18-year-old suffered the injury as he scored a penalty for Barcelona against Celta Vigo on April 22. "Internally I was praying it was nothing, that it was just cramp or something like that, because the World Cup was very close and I knew that a hamstring injury is never a short-term thing," said the winger to the Spanish football federation's own media outlet."I was afraid it might be serious and, above all, that even if it wasn't serious, I could suffer a setback and end up missing the World Cup."Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is hopeful he will have him available for La Roja's opening game at the World Cup against Cape Verde on June 15.On Sunday, the player warmed up with his team-mates in Spain's first training session before heading to work in the gym. "It's also true that it helps knowing you're going to play a World Cup, so mentally it's like you haven't played a single game all season, and I'm really eager to make my debut (at the tournament)," he added.Yamal, who starred as Spain won Euro 2024 in Germany, said the World Cup is the "biggest thing" in football and he has dreamt "a thousand times" about lifting the trophy.If Yamal does not make the first match he is expected to play some part against Saudi Arabia in the second on June 21, and Uruguay on June 27 in the other Group H fixtures.

Yamal says comeback is not impossible as Barca chase history at Atletico

Lamine Yamal insisted Monday that Barcelona must not treat a Champions League fightback at Atletico Madrid as something that is insurmountable.Barca travel to ‌the Metropolitano today trailing 2-0 from the first leg of their quarter-final, ‌a deficit that leaves them staring at an exit ‌from the competition unless ‌they can conjure something extraordinary away ‌from home."We mustn't think of a comeback as a miracle," Yamal told a press conference."I've been lucky enough that, ever since I was a child, I've had to take on more responsibility than I should have. I'm used to it."I just focus on enjoying it, on not seeing it as a problem, but as a strength. I'm grateful for everything that's happening to me."More than half of the side set to step out in Madrid emerged from La Masia, Barcelona's youth academy, with 18-year-old Yamal widely ‌viewed as the most dazzling product since Lionel Messi.He burst onto the international stage by helping Spain win the 2024 European Championship and finished second in the 2025 Ballon d'Or vote."It's very important to have lots of La Masia players on the pitch for matches like tomorrow's. We're all home-grown, we all love Barca. We know what a moment like this means. We'll give it our all right to the end," he said.History offers slim comfort. Only once in the Champions League has a team overturned ‌a 2-0 first-leg home ‌defeat, when Manchester United beat Paris St Germain 3-1 in Paris in 2019.Barcelona themselves have managed just one greater escape in knockout competition, erasing a 4-0 loss to PSG with a 6-1 victory at Camp Nou in the 2016-17 last 16.The task looks even steeper given recent history. Last month Barca were knocked out of the Copa del Rey semi-finals by Atletico after losing 4-0 in the first leg at the Metropolitano.A 3-0 win in the return proved insufficient, sending Atletico into Saturday's final against Real Sociedad.Yamal, however, is adamant Barcelona will not give up without a fight."We promise that, if we're knocked out, we'll fight right to the end. We'll give our all for this badge. It'll be a match lasting 90 minutes or more; this isn't over ‌yet. A comeback is very much possible, which is why we're here," Yamal said.
