FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Cape Verde's Vozinha meet at Rockefeller Center in New York City on July 17, 2026. (Reuters)

I preferred my old life, says Cape Verde World Cup hero Vozinha

Vozinha kept clean sheets against eventual champions Spain and Saudi Arabia with his exceptional goalkeeping to help Cape Verde reach the World Cup round of 32 this year, but the 40-year-old feels powerless to cope with the intense attention that fame has brought his way.Cape Verde, a collection of islands near Africa's west coast with a population of some 500,000, surprisingly reached the knockout stage in their first appearance at the global tournament before losing 3-2 to Argentina.Vozinha, whose performances earned him a Yashin Trophy nomination for the year's best goalkeeper, has become a global star, with his Instagram follower count ballooning from 56,000 to 28 million people."I’ve lost my peace and tranquillity. I no longer have any privacy," Vozinha told Britain's Observer newspaper."I go to a restaurant, and there’s always someone who wants to take a photo with me or asks me for an autograph. Or worse, someone's filming me... I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it."His family members have also been affected, with fans showing up daily at his mother's house in Cape Verde."I’m not there, so I can’t help them,” said Vozinha, who left Portuguese second-tier club Chaves to join Chile's Colo-Colo in July."A lot of people want to be famous... but they only see the positive side of that reality. To be honest, if I were offered the life I have today or the life I had before, I’d choose the one I had before.”

Xavi pleased with first week as Netherlands coach, but wants more

Netherlands coach Xavi Hernández is pleased with his first week in charge but now wants his side to show an even more attacking game in their next two Nations League fixtures.The Spanish World Cup winner wants the Dutch side playing with more of the attacking intensity that paid off last Thursday when their persistent forays forced a late equaliser against Germany in Amsterdam.This was followed by their first victory under Xavi, a 2-1 defeat of Serbia on Sunday."It is always most important to get the three points, I’m happy that we managed to do that. But we do need to play better, because, especially in the first half, we did not press well," he said."Nevertheless, I'm very satisfied after a week of work.”Xavi singled out AZ Alkmaar striker Mexx Meerdink, who made his a debut as a substitute against Germany and then marked his first start for the Dutch by scoring both goals against Serbia. 'MEXX IS A VERY HARD WORKER'"Mexx is a very hard worker who understands how we want to play," Xavi said. "He helped the team with more than just his goals, although those certainly helped. The work he did for the team was fantastic.”The Dutch side face Greece next, in Thessaloniki on Thursday, then entertain Serbia in Eindhoven on Sunday. Xavi was clear about where improvements on last week were needed."For example, there were many moments when we needed to attack the spaces, but we didn’t do it. That is something we need to improve. But also things such as making the pitch wider and moving the ball around more quickly," he said."But the most important thing is that we are creating a lot of chances. The players feel comfortable on the pitch with the structure we are playing in, so a lot of things are also going well."

Erasmus sizes up 'improved' Wallabies ahead of 2027 World Cup

Coach Rassie Erasmus believes South Africa has gained valuable intel on an "improved" Wallabies side ahead of next year's World Cup in Australia.The shorthanded World Cup champions were upset 42-38 by the Wallabies on Sunday in Perth, with Erasmus's decision to rest a slew of first-choice players seemingly backfiring.South Africa were completely outplayed for most of the one-off Test by a rejuvenated Wallabies, who are on a five-match unbeaten streak under new coach Les Kiss.The match was played amid a febrile atmosphere with a near-capacity crowd at the 60,000-seat Optus Stadium, which will open the 2027 World Cup in almost exactly one year.The Springboks hope to be the first side to win three straight World Cup titles and could at some stage face the Wallabies, who are building momentum after a long period in the wilderness."Australia is a good team, they definitely have improved since Les has been there," Erasmus said after South Africa lost for just the second time against Australia in the past seven matches between the teams."They're the World Cup host. We might strike them in a vital playoff game and it's nice to have a taste of them."So I'm not going to say lessons learned, but I think it was a valuable experience for us what happened tonight." WALLABIES REDUCED TO 11 PLAYERSSouth Africa almost snatched a remarkable victory after the Wallabies were reduced to 11 players due to a flurry of yellow cards.But the visitors were left to rue a patchy performance that saw them trail by 25 points midway through the second half."We rolled the dice a little bit and some guys haven't played a lot together in a long time," Erasmus said."It's not an excuse. We picked the team and we had a game plan, but didn't trump them at the end."The long journey to Western Australia ended a gruelling travel schedule for the Springboks, who were coming off a 3-1 series victory over arch-rivals New Zealand.The series, dubbed 'Rugby's Greatest Rivalry', wrapped up on September 12 in Baltimore, leading to Erasmus making 13 changes to the Springboks' starting line-up."We learned a lot about our players and about tight situations," Erasmus said."We enjoy each other's company and we've been together a lot for eight-nine years."We didn't win, not because we've been too long (on the road), but because we didn't play well enough."

Kohli says 2027 World Cup will be his last for India

Virat Kohli said next year's 50-overs World Cup would be his last for India and he is ready to give his all to help lift the trophy.Kohli, the leading century-maker in ODIs with 54 hundreds, retired from T20 internationals and Test cricket earlier and now represents India only in the 50-over format.The 37-year-old batter, who has scored 14,941 runs in one-day internationals, second only to Sachin Tendulkar's 18,426, won the World Cup on home soil in 2011 before suffering defeat in the 2023 final against Australia.The 2027 edition, to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October to November, will be Kohli's fifth ODI World Cup."For me, it's the last World Cup I'm going to play for India," Kohli told broadcaster JioStar on Saturday."That is my motivation and like, you know, to leave everything out there. And of course, the goal is absolutely to win the World Cup and whatever it takes, I'm absolutely ready." DEMANDS OF 50-OVER WORLD CUP 'TOUGH'Kohli said the demands of a 50-over World Cup made it one of cricket's toughest challenges, particularly with the tournament set to be played away from home."The intensity of a 50-over World Cup is greater than anything. Because now, it's about 10 games at a Twenty20 level of intensity," he said."But you are playing 2.5 T20 games in one day. And to maintain that intensity for 10 games in a big tournament and World Cup is a big deal. Also now, it's in foreign conditions. It takes a lot out of you."Former captain Rohit Sharma, who also plays only ODIs for India, said he remained fully motivated by the prospect of another World Cup campaign."The thought will never cross my mind that the business I had is finished," Rohit said."As long as you're playing, there is always something to look forward to. And I'm looking forward to the World Cup."Kohli and Rohit were both named in India's squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies. The opening match will be played in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

Record-breaking Bellingham voted England men's player of the year

Jude Bellingham has been named England men's player of the year for a second successive season after a standout campaign in which he scored a record seven goals at the 2026 World Cup, the Football Association said on Friday.The 23-year-old Real Madrid midfielder's World Cup tally set a record for an England men's player at a major tournament as the Three Lions secured their best finish at the competition since 1966 by finishing third."It feels great," Bellingham said. "It's a huge honour to be recognised by the fans again. So not something you think about when you’re playing for your country, but it's obviously a beautiful little addition to the great summer we had, and the honour of playing for my country."The award was decided by supporters voting on the official England app.Bellingham's World Cup tally included doubles in the thrilling round-of-16 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium and in the quarter-final win over Norway in Miami.He also became the youngest European player to feature at four major tournaments.England manager Thomas Tuchel said Bellingham was "one of the players of the tournament, not only for us but of the whole tournament.""He lived up to his full potential; you could just see what a competitor and what a machine he is," Tuchel said. "He just thrives under pressure, he just loves these moments, he loves these stages and it brings out the very best in him."Captain Harry Kane was England's top scorer for a seventh consecutive season after netting 12 goals across all national team competitions, matching his best tally for England.Kane called the achievement a "showcase of consistency" and thanked his teammates and coaches for their support.

Dutch look to Xavi to restore traditional football ethos

* Xavi debuts on Thursday against Germany in Amsterdam after taking four-year contract* Dutch FA turned to Xavi after tactical disquiet under Koeman and Van Gaal* Xavi says players bought into possession-based game model built on pressing and passion  Dutch footballing philosophy has had a marked impact on the all-conquering success of Spain recently, but now that the Netherlands are looking to bolster their own fortunes they have turned to a Spanish World Cup winner for inspiration.Former Barcelona midfielder and coach Xavi Hernandez has become the first foreigner in charge of the Dutch national team since the 1978 World Cup.Xavi, who as a player won the World Cup in 2010 and two European Championships, debuts as coach on Thursday when the Dutch host Germany in Amsterdam and will have three more Nations League matches in the three-week international window.The Netherlands have turned to him for a change in perspective after spells under Ronald Koeman and Louis van Gaal sparked much disquiet over the team’s tactics and playing philosophy. Both coaches were accused of abandoning traditional Dutch values around ball possession and attacking football and employing counter-attacks as their primary weapon.Although Van Gaal took the team to the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals and Koeman the semis of Euro 2024, elimination in the round of 32 at this year’s World Cup was a major disappointment."It is about how we in the Netherlands want to play football," said former international Nigel de Jong, who, as technical director at the Dutch football association, recruited Xavi."That means playing dominantly and being attractive in a good way while doing so. Dominant does not always mean playing attacking football; we also want to be dominant defensively. By conceding fewer goals, we want to try to win matches."Although the 46-year-old Xavi is a relatively inexperienced coach, the Dutch feel that as a player, he had much of what their side misses, in terms of technique, discipline and creativity.BARCELONA INFLUENCEHe also showed during his coaching tenure at Barcelona, where he won La Liga in his first season in charge, the ideas the Dutch supporters want to see from their team."After the first meeting, I immediately felt like going out onto the pitch. New ideas and a new way of playing football. I think it is also good for the group," said midfielder Tijjani Reijnders.Xavi, who has a four-year contract, told a press conference on Wednesday he felt the players had bought into his game model and philosophy, which he has described as revolving around possession, position, pressing, perception, and passion."You need possession to win the match," he said. "You need the right positions. When you lose the ball, you have to press. And you need perception to see what is happening around you and understand the game. But without passion, you cannot play football.”But he was also clear that winning remains the end goal."I think there is definitely potential in this squad,” Xavi said.

World Cup 'not enough' as Spain begin next chapter

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente will not allow the World Cup winners to rest on their laurels as they get back into action this week for the first time since their triumph.La Roja may have conquered Europe in 2024 and then the world this summer, but when they face England in the Nations League on Saturday, they will be seeking to improve. De la Fuente said in the aftermath of the World Cup final victory over Argentina in New Jersey in July, he was already looking to the future.The 65-year-old signed a contract extension, keeping him with the team until 2032, earlier this week. "In the heat of the moment, two or three minutes later, a player came up to me and said, 'What do we still have to win?' Well, the match against England on September 26th," said De la Fuente."This team never stops. The World Cup isn't enough -- we have to be better. What we've achieved isn't enough to win the next match." Spain's next major target will be the 2028 European championships, where they have a chance to emulate the La Roja side that won Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012.De la Fuente admitted that repeating that feat would be tricky. "In life it's very hard to win, and many more (teams) lose than win," he said. "Repeating past successes in terms of titles... we're going to try to be in a position to compete to win."Now we're the team to beat. That's an added motivation." - New faces - Thomas Tuchel's England, who lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, offer an immediate reminder of the level Spain will be expected to maintain as world champions.De la Fuente picked a similar squad to his World Cup team for the upcoming Nations League games against England, Croatia twice, and the Czech Republic. Teenage star Lamine Yamal, having returned to form with Barcelona, and captain Rodri remain the key figures, and are both in the running to win the Ballon d'Or, although there have been a few changes elsewhere.Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez returned, after missing the World Cup with a foot injury, while Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen has been recalled too. Goalkeeper Joan Garcia's injury opened the door to Inter stopper Josep Martinez, in-form Espanyol striker Roberto Fernandez could make his first appearance for La Roja and Ivan Fresneda earned a late call-up in place of hurt Tottenham defender Pedro Porro. "How could there not be continuity with players who have won everything?" said De la Fuente. "But that doesn't mean we won't give a chance to those who are knocking on the door." Mikel Oyarzabal led the line for Spain through most of the World Cup, while Ferran Torres scored the winner in the final, but Fernandez can stake his claim after he was chosen over Real Madrid's Carlos Espi.That position in the team, among a few others, will be disputed during the Nations League and the build-up to Euro 2028, which is ideal for De la Fuente. The coach's message is clear, with Spain looking to progress despite the trophies they have already won, and strong competition can help foster the right environment for evolution.

* Infantino proposes independent review of FIFA's decision-making process in letter seen by Reuters * DFB chief Neuendorf says letter is ploy to boost re-election chances * Sources told Reuters Infantino still has enough votes to win March election A letter from FIFA President Gianni Infantino this week to all 211 members, offering to discuss reforms within world soccer's governing body, amid an ongoing crisis over his failed plan to sell a stake in the World Cup, is a mere ploy to get himself re-elected, Germany's Football Association (DFB) President Bernd Neuendorf said on Tuesday.In Monday's letter seen by Reuters, Infantino proposed an independent review of FIFA's decision-making process, in a move that could help him regain support after the withdrawal of his controversial private investment plan.Striking a conciliatory tone, he also said he would propose consultations with confederations, member associations and other stakeholders about strengthening FIFA's decision-making.Infantino faced a fierce backlash over his proposal to sell a 20% stake in FIFA's commercial rights, including the World Cup, to private investors. The plan was abandoned in July after strong opposition and boycott threats, with UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF calling for changes to FIFA's leadership.CHANGE IS NECESSARYThey had said there had been no consultation with any continental confederation at any stage, with Infantino acting alone. UEFA has said a change in leadership was now necessary with the European body having lost faith in the current president."I regard Gianni Infantino’s letter as a transparent ploy to secure his re-election next year," said DFB President Neuendorf on Tuesday. "Fundamentally, FIFA now seems to have recognised that changes are essential."However, Gianni Infantino is definitely not the right person to lead a reform process. He has squandered all credibility." Neuendorf is also a member of the FIFA Council, the organisation's main decision-making body.Infantino also said in the letter that member associations' positions on proposals or governance matters would not affect their treatment by FIFA, whose development and solidarity programmes would continue under existing rules.The Swiss is up for re-election in March next year, with his opponents struggling to find a candidate to challenge the president. Sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters this month that he still had enough votes to win, prompting opponents to focus on curbing his powers.

Spain extend De la Fuente's contract until 2032 after World Cup triumph

* Once mocked by media, coach has had phenomenal success* De la Fuente to lead national team through 2032 Euros* Rewarded with pay rise and record long tenure When Luis de la Fuente took the Spanish national team job, he was the quiet federation man after the noise and glitz of Luis Enrique, a coach many fans had to Google and some media dubbed "Luis de la Who?".Three trophies, 50 matches and one World Cup later, the once-mocking question has a resounding answer: he is the future.De la Fuente has signed a six-year extension until the end of the 2032 European Championship, the Spanish FA (RFEF) said on Monday after ratifying his contract at an executive meeting.The deal, agreed during the triumphant World Cup campaign, is the longest tenure ever approved for a Spain head coach and takes him through the 2028 European Championship, 2030 World Cup and 2032 European Championship.According to sources close to the federation, it also includes a considerable pay rise - a fitting reward for a man who has turned patience, planning and a decade of academy graft into Spain's most dominant spell in generations.De la Fuente has delivered the 2023 Nations League, the 2024 European Championship and the 2026 World Cup. The only trophy to slip away was the less important 2025 Nations League, which Spain lost to Portugal on penalties. SPAIN'S LONGEST UNBEATEN RUN OF 38 MATCHESSpain are also on the longest unbeaten run in their history, 38 matches without defeat.On Monday, under Madrid's scorching heat at the RFEF's Ciudad del Futbol training ground, De la Fuente sat alongside federation president Rafael Louzan and the trophies that trace his rise from youth-team craftsman to architect of the side everyone is trying to catch.His path was never glamorous. A former hard-working full back at Athletic Bilbao, De la Fuente built his coaching life away from club football's glare, joining the RFEF in 2013 and working his way through Spain's youth system.That background, once used against him, became his greatest strength. Rodri, Unai Simon and Mikel Merino were part of his European Under-19 champions in 2015. Merino, Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz later shared Under-21 success with him, while Pedri, Martin Zubimendi and Marc Cucurella were part of Spain's Olympic silver-medal campaign in Tokyo. INHERITED THE SENIOR SIDE IN DECEMBER 2022By the time he inherited the senior side in December 2022 after Spain's disappointing World Cup in Qatar, De la Fuente already knew the habits and hearts of a generation."During the 2024 Euros, we began to emphasise a word that gave us a great deal of security, confidence and strength - family. We want the Spanish national team to be a family and that is honestly how we feel," he said on Monday.Yet De la Fuente insisted this was not a full stop but a starting whistle."We are not content with what we have achieved so far," he said. "The best is yet to come."The man once presented as a question has become Spain's long-term answer.

Chennai Super Kings announce Zaheer as head coach for IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings on Monday announced former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan as the team's new head coach for IPL 2027. A crucial part of India's successful World Cup 2011 campaign, Zaheer comes with a vast experience across formats having played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is for India in a career that spanned 14 years. In the IPL, Zaheer has played 100 matches and turned to coaching roles post his retirement. Rupa Gurunath, owner, Chennai Super Kings, said in a statement posted on the franchise's website: "We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the head coach for Chennai Super Kings. Zaheer's distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise." KS Viswanathan, Managing Director, Chennai Super Kings, said: "Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India's success in the 2000s. He's one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family." Zaheer said: "It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history." According to Viswanathan, Zaheer's name was discussed and agreed upon by the team's leadership group. "We wanted to get the views of the cricket management including MS Dhoni, Ruturaj (Gaikwad) and Sanju (Samson)," Viswanathan told Cricinfo.com. "There were a lot of discussions with the owners also." CONTRACT TO RUN FOR ONE SEASON Zaheer's contract will be a year long and he is expected to start his role soon. The IPL retention window normally is November though franchises have not been given any firm date, the report on Cricinfo.com added. Zaheer, who had a 14-year competitive cricket career capped by an ODI World Cup win in 2011, was recently with Lucknow Super Giants as their mentor until September 2025. He was with Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022, first as director of cricket operations and later global head of development, once the owners diversified and bought T20 teams around the world. The CSK job will be his first as head coach. Viswanathan said Zaheer did not go through any interview process and "readily" agreed to take up the new role, the report added. While the franchise has not made any statement yet on the future of the rest of the coaching bench from last season including long-term pair of Eric Simmons and Michael Hussey, Viswanthan said Zaheer has been given the authority to pick "his own coaching staff". "It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL," Zaheer said in a CSK press release on Monday. "As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history." Zaheer enjoyed successive title-winning seasons working with head coach Mahela Jayawardene at MI in 2019 and 2020. He played 100 IPL matches, picked up 102 wickets and was part of two finals, 2010 and 2011, losing both to CSK. Apart from his vast experience of playing and coaching in IPL, the CSK management and leadership group is certain Zaheer would be "a lot of help" to development of the team's bowlers. CSK have had a difficult time in the IPL recently. They are yet to make the playoffs since winning the title three years ago in Dhoni's final season as full-time captain, and a bottom-placed finish in 2025 prompted a change in the way they function.
