Verstappen cruises to first Singapore GP win as Antonelli closes on crown

Red Bull's Max Verstappen delivered a commanding performance to win the Singapore Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday, securing his second straight victory of the season after a perfect weekend that included a sprint race triumph.The Dutchman controlled the race from the start at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, fending off an early challenge from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc who finished second while Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli was third to close in on a first title.Verstappen, who won the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia last weekend, had never won in Singapore before and he had come into the race weekend stating he had "unfinished business"."It's taken a while but I think this race was very good. We had pace when we needed to have it on the soft tyre, even though I think the medium tyre for everyone was more of a struggle," Verstappen said."But it worked out, so of course very happy to win here... The last two races have been really positive for us and it's just great to see."Antonelli extended his championship lead over teammate George Russell to 102 points and the Italian can mathematically win the title in the next round in Austin."Can I? Really?" a surprised Antonelli said when he was told after his 14th podium of the season."Well, let's not worry about that. Let's try to do the best weekend as possible and finish the job."Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton had qualified third on the grid but he endured a torrid evening, slipping to sixth behind Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after the two McLaren drivers overtook him in the dying stages as he struggled with his tyres.Russell, who started at the back of the grid due to engine penalties, finished ninth behind Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg while Isack Hadjar - who also started at the back - was 10th. VERSTAPPEN SHUTS THE DOORLeclerc reacted faster than polesitter Verstappen at the start, nearly lining up alongside the Dutchman heading into turn one, but the Red Bull driver veered to the left to shut the door on the Ferrari and retain his lead.As the race progressed, Verstappen steadily pulled clear on soft tyres, with Red Bull urging him to manage their life as Ferrari threatened an undercut.Hamilton's struggles became apparent early as he lost pace on medium tyres in third place and Ferrari brought him in for softs before Leclerc pitted on lap 25 in a move timed to emerge ahead of his teammate.Hamilton's frustration boiled over on team radio as he urged Ferrari to let him past Leclerc, saying: "I need to use this speed, mate," before Leclerc responded by setting the fastest lap.When Verstappen finally pitted on lap 33, his commanding lead allowed him to rejoin in first place.Lance Stroll's retirement with clutch issues triggered another VSC period that sparked a flurry of pit stops and Russell's timing proved unfortunate as the VSC ended earlier than expected, dropping him to 10th. RADIO ISSUES FOR VERSTAPPENThe strategy chaos benefited Leclerc, who caught and passed Hamilton on lap 46 to claim second place, though he remained nearly 15 seconds behind Verstappen, who faced radio communication problems for the second time this weekend.The issue forced his engineer to resort to coded messages, asking the Dutchman to key his mic to make a sound or stay silent when given options on strategy.The final stint saw Hamilton's pace collapse as multiple drivers closed in sensing a podium.Norris attempted to pass Hamilton on lap 54, but the Ferrari left the track and went wide while the McLaren went on the dirty part of the track, allowing Antonelli to overtake and move up to fourth.Antonelli then passed Hamilton for third before Norris found his opportunity at turn 10.Hamilton's misery was completed when Piastri overtook him on the final lap, relegating the Ferrari driver to sixth place.

Verstappen wins Singapore sprint after Russell crashes

Max Verstappen won a wet and dramatic Singapore sprint race for Red Bull on Saturday after George Russell's Mercedes crashed when leading at the end of the opening lap. Verstappen held off Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton to win by 2.50sec with Charles Leclerc third as the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri touched and crashed out on the final lap.

Verstappen continues resurgence with pole for Singapore sprint

Max Verstappen scorched to Singapore sprint race pole position in his Red Bull on Friday after a thrilling qualifying session at the Marina Bay Street circuit.George Russell's Mercedes joined Verstappen on the front row for the 21-lap dash on Saturday with the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc third and Oscar Piastri's McLaren fourth.A resurgent Verstappen, who won for the first time this season in Malaysia last weekend, clocked 1min 31.156sec under lights at a Marina Bay Circuit enveloped in haze caused by fires in Indonesia, 0.120sec quicker than Russell."It's always close here in Singapore. And also your lap itself, you're pushing as hard as you think is possible, close to the walls in places," said the four-time world champion."Once we bolted on the soft tyres (for SQ3), it felt like the car was coming alive a little bit more, but I did not expect this."Of course, very happy to be first."Fifth was the McLaren of Lando Norris, followed by the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton.Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, sporting a new aerodynamic package, was only seventh in his Mercedes, with Liam Lawson (RB), Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) completing the top 10 on the grid.Verstappen has never won in Singapore, where extremes of heat and humidity play a part in the most physically attritional race of the season.He was buoyed by the pace of his Red Bull, which traditionally struggles on slower speed and bumpy street circuits."I think the last few races we have been a lot stronger," said Verstappen."But this track still highlights a few little weaknesses in the car, but we manage to drive with them as well as possible."However the Dutchman could face a grid penalty as he was being investigated by stewards after the session for allegedly overtaking Hamilton under yellow flag conditions during SQ1.Russell said of P2: "It is going to be challenging, the grip here (means) the drivers on the pole side have a big advantage." 'DIFFICULT WEEKEND'Antonelli admitted he struggled throughout the session."Still a lot to understand about this package, the car is very unpredictable and it is very hard to put a lap together," said the Italian, who is 84 points ahead of Russell in the drivers' standings."I came with high hopes. But I think it will be a difficult weekend. I don't really see where we can find seven tenths."Singapore is featuring a sprint race for the first time, on a track that is notoriously difficult for overtaking.The only practice session for the teams to get to grips with the idiosyncrasies of the Marina Bay Street Circuit took place on a dusty track before sunset earlier on Friday, hardly ideal preparation for a 62-lap night race on Sunday.Singapore is extremely tough on drivers, who can shed up to 3kg (6lb) during the Grand Prix from sweating alone, and the race weekend has been declared a "heat hazard" by organisers allowing drivers to wear cooling vests.The teams also have to contend with the thick haze caused by wildfires in nearby Indonesia, which saw Singapore's air quality plunge to an "unhealthy" 205 on Friday according to the IQAir tracking website.Readings above 150 are classified as unhealthy, while levels above 300 are considered hazardous.Motorsport's governing body told AFP the race was not under threat from the haze.

Verstappen out to settle 'unfinished business' at Singapore Grand Prix

Max Verstappen said Thursday he was determined to settle his "unfinished business" at the Singapore Grand Prix, where he has never won. The Red Bull driver took his first victory of 2026 at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia last weekend, the 72nd time that he has stood on the top step of the podium in a career that has brought him four world titles. But none of those wins have come in Singapore where a bumpy track, slow corners and high humidity seem to favour other cars.The Dutchman would love to break his long losing streak at the Marina Bay Circuit. "I think in the last few years we have always been bad at low speed and over kerbing and bumps," Verstappen told reporters. "This car is probably more competitive at low speed, but we still struggle on bumps and kerbs. We know that and so, of course, I have unfinished business here." He finished second last year behind the Mercedes of George Russell and believes he can go one better and complete back-to-back victories in steamy southeast Asia. "Every year I come back here and I'm trying to win it. I hope we can be a little more competitive this year compared to the last few years."With a sprint race in Singapore this year, it means there is only one Friday practice session for the drivers and teams to get up to speed. "It's always hectic, a sprint weekend, to make the right choices," said Verstappen. "The most important thing is just to find a good balance with the car straight away. That will help a lot for the rest of the weekend."

Verstappen revival to be put to the test in steamy Singapore

Max Verstappen's resurgence in Malaysia will be put to the test just 300 kilometres south at the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend, where the Red Bull driver may need to overcome the elements and his own poor record at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. An imperious Verstappen took his first chequered flag of the year at the wide open and fast Sepang Circuit at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on Sunday. But it was in a race delayed for an hour and a half after a chaotic formation lap saw cars, including Verstappen's, grind to halt because of a software glitch in the settings for running in wet conditions. "It was insane," said Verstappen. "At some points, we were five-wide on the straight because we couldn't understand it... I saw eight cars crawling and Lewis (Hamilton) stopped... It's not what you want for the sport."Rain could again play a part in the tropical city state, with thunderstorms forecast to affect both Saturday's sprint race and qualifying, and Sunday's night grand prix.Verstappen has never won at the twisty Marina Bay Street Circuit, where extremes of heat and humidity play a part in the most physically attritional race of the season on a circuit notoriously difficult for overtaking.Drivers can shed up to three kilogrammes (more than six pounds) during the longest outing on the calendar, where completing the 62 steamy laps often lasts the maximum two hours race time allowed.A floor upgrade coupled with Verstappen finally working out how to get the best from the new generation car led him to call the result at Sepang four days ago "amazing". Runaway championship leader Kimi Antonelli was second in the Mercedes and is likely to be challenging for the chequered flag again. He was the beneficiary of yet more bad luck for his teammate and main title rival George Russell, who was "beyond disappointment" after an agonising power unit failure when running third with five laps to go in Malaysia. "You've almost got to laugh... it's just so many times this season it's happened," said Russell, who has failed to finish three times in 16 grands prix so far in 2026.Lewis Hamilton has won four times in Singapore in the past and was buoyed by a drive at Sepang where he cut through the field to recover to third after starting on unsuitable dry tyres and dropping to the back."To finish on the podium after the way the race began feels really satisfying," said Hamilton. "It is a great reward for the hard work, determination and resilience everyone showed today."Russell won the Singapore Grand Prix a year ago, edging Verstappen and the current world champion Lando Norris of McLaren.dh/lga

FIA to investigate software bug after Bahrain GP in Malaysia

Formula One's governing body has promised a full investigation into a software bug that caused chaos and forced the start of Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia to be aborted with drivers feeling like they were in battery-powered cars made of Lego.Ferrari's seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's four-time champion and eventual race winner Max Verstappen were among several affected by the glitch on a formation lap after torrential rain and a long delay at Malaysia's steamy Sepang circuit.Verstappen compared the experience to a 'Lego race' held at Silverstone before the British Grand Prix while Hamilton, the sport's most successful driver of all time, had to stop his car on track and re-start it in what he said was a career first.The episode was the latest in a difficult first season for the new era of cars and engines, with drivers at the pinnacle of motorsport unhappy since the opening race with the power units' increased electrical component and the need for energy management.The governing FIA said afterwards that "an unprecedented combination of low engine speed, low-grip conditions, wet-weather energy management settings and the Sepang circuit’s sector configuration led to an unintended loss of power for a number of cars.""As a result, the FIA technical department removed the energy limit constraint in the affected sectors through an updated software release distributed to all competitors during the race delay caused by heavy rain, enabling teams to make the necessary changes to the power unit before the start of the race."This issue had not been detected by the FIA or the teams during testing or during the laps to the grid. The FIA, together with the teams and power unit manufacturers, will undertake a full review of the issue."The FIA's single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis told reporters the lack of pre-season testing in wet conditions had played a part in the chaos."Some cars went very slowly, almost came to a standstill. There was a bit of a concertina effect between cars, and some cars almost stopped completely," he said. "That bug prevented the power from being redeployed, and for the cars to start again."I think if we had had a bit more testing, we probably would have managed to catch it in time, and not have such a situation."Sepang was the first race weekend of the season with wet conditions, although the track dried during the race."Sometimes things fall through the net and people learn, and you do a better job next time,” said Tombazis.

Verstappen claims first win of year in chaotic Bahrain GP in Malaysia

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen secured his and Red Bull's first win this year with an imperious drive Sunday in chaotic conditions in a storm-delayed Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Nine years after winning the last F1 race at the Sepang International Circuit, the 29-year-old Dutchman came through a wild afternoon of accidents and incidents for his 72nd victory and first since Abu Dhabi last year. In a race of shifting tyre strategies, he came home 2.307 seconds ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton who took third after a thrilling recovery drive. His Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc was fourth, having fallen to last place in the early laps, ahead of Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull, McLaren's Oscar Piastri and the Racing Bull of Liam Lawson. Two-time champion Fernando Alonso finished a season-best eighth for Aston Martin ahead of world champion Lando Norris and Racing Bull rookie Arvid Lindblad. The result extended Antonelli's lead to 84 points ahead of teammate George Russell, who retired after a late power failure under a safety car. "It is really nice to win after the year we've had and all the progression we've made," said a delighted Verstappen. "It was very hectic with a lot of different things, but we made the right call with the inters (intermediate tyres)." Antonelli congratulated him and added: "It was the maximum we could have done. We struggled, but I am happy to come away with P2." Russell, though, said he was "beyond disappointment" as luck deserted him late in the race. "You've almost got to laugh... it's just so many times this season it's happened."I don't need to say I think it's gone but, of course, it's exceptionally unlikely and that's just the reality."- 'Tough race' -Hamilton was greeted by a roar from the big crowd."What a tough race that was," he said."I was more than a minute back after we made the wrong call on tyres at the start and everyone was pulling away."The race had followed a protracted 100-minute delay following a tropical rainstorm, and began with half the field on intermediate tyres. Both Mercedes promptly swamped Verstappen, Antonelli taking the lead in turn one, followed by Russell. Hamilton, on soft slicks, had no grip and tumbled down the order from second on the grid as it became clear that the conditions remained treacherous.  It all changed on lap nine when Valtteri Bottas slid off into the gravel and the safety car was deployed, bringing nearly everyone in for dry tyres with Antonelli taking mediums and Verstappen softs. Hamilton stayed out and upon the resumption Verstappen pounced to sweep round Antonelli and regain a lead he would not relinquish.Hamilton continued his recovery, slicing through the field and by lap 23 had dispensed with Lawson to take fifth. He closed up within six seconds of the Frenchman before the pair pitted on lap 31. "This tyre feels terrible," said Hamilton of his new mediums.A late virtual and then full safety car saw everyone pit for fresh softs. Russell's retirement enabled Hamilton to get on to the podium when he passed Hadjar in the final four-lap dash to the chequered flag.

Red Bull's Verstappen grabs pole position for Bahrain GP

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen grabbed pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix being held in Malaysia with the fastest time in Saturday's qualifying session. Red Bull's Verstappen, currently sixth in the world championship standings, took his first pole of the year ahead of seven-time British world champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari.It will be the first time the Dutch driver has started at the front of the grid since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last season. Verstappen's teammate Isack Hadjar set the third-fastest qualifying time but the Frenchman will drop five places on the starting grid due to a penalty imposed on Red Bull for fitting new engine components beyond the permitted quota. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Italy finished fourth in qualifying.The Bahrain Grand Prix is being raced in Malaysia due to disruption in the Gulf linked to the US-led war with Iran.

Verstappen and Norris blame slow cars as Mercedes tops qualifying

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris both blamed their cars' lack of straight-line speed for disappointing grid positions after qualifying eighth and fifth for Saturday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix.Both world champions said their cars lacked the power to match the speed of the Mercedes that carried George Russell to a dominant pole position ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc."The whole qualifying session, I was lacking top speed," said four-time world champion Verstappen, who had been top of the times in his Red Bull in the earlier final free practice session. "The engine was just not working.""That was one problem and then in Q3, I was about to start my middle lap, but the battery didn't charge."So you start a lap with half a battery -- so you have to abort and then you lose temperature because you don't have enough power basically."It then snowballs into the final lap and again no top speed and a yellow flag in my lap. That's where you are!"So, I have no idea for tomorrow. We were in a really good place all week, but then had a disaster of a qualifying because of a lot of issues. Let's see what we can do."Reigning champion Norris said he felt that a front row grid position was possible in his McLaren, but did not have the power to beat Russell."I think P2 was possible," he said. "I felt confident in the car, to be honest, but I just pushed the braking a bit too much.""I'd rather die trying to get a pole than settle for third, fourth or fifth."I'd rather put together a perfect lap than an average lap and I paid the price for that."The car's not bad, we're just a long way off -- especially my car is a long way off in the straights. It's limiting because there's lots of straights here."Of course, I hope for a podium, but with my straight-line speed it will be impossible."Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar, back in action after missing three races with a broken wrist, qualified an impressive fourth ahead of the Dutchman while Oscar Piastri was third in the second McLaren.Lewis Hamilton qualified eighth, six places behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc who he assisted with a 'tow' on his final best lap.He said: "It was pretty bad in qualifying once again. And it's not for the lack of trying."We changed our plan - instead of doing two runs, we ended up waiting and because I was ahead of Charles, I had nobody ahead of me for the tow."We just couldn't compete with Mercedes -- they're just outright so much quicker on the straights. They did a great job."

Russell leads Mercedes 1-2 in Azerbaijan GP practice

George Russell topped the times ahead of team-mate and world championship leader Kimi Antonelli as Mercedes dominated Thursday's second practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.The pair delivered a 1-2 as Russell completed a 'double top' ahead of Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen by eight-tenths of a second.Russell was fastest in one minute and 43.347 seconds to outpace his Italian partner by 0.552sec in a convincing display of speed on the fast and unforgiving barrier-lined streets of the Azeri capital.Charles Leclerc was fourth ahead of his Ferrari team-mate seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, with reigning world champion Lando Norris sixth for McLaren ahead of Alpine's Pierre Gasly and his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri."We are miles off," said Norris. "We're up there, let's say, we're in the position we expected to be in, but I'm 1.5 seconds off the pace. So, pretty pants."We'll see what work we can do tonight. The car didn't feel that bad so, yeah, it's a knife in the heart when you see how far off you are."Isack Hadjar was ninth in the second Red Bull, having returned to action after breaking his wrist. DRIVERS SURVIVE NARROW ESCAPESSeveral drivers survived narrow escapes from brushes with the barriers and walls, but the session was halted only once for a red flag when Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad crashed in the narrowest section of the circuit, but was unhurt.Russell and Verstappen set the early pace before Norris, his car using cable ties to retain the floor boards, went top only for the Dutchman to respond as the drivers settled into a groove of fast laps.After 15 minutes, Antonelli was still in the pits as his car was being rebuilt following an engine change after he suffered a hydraulics failure during FP1."I felt comfortable in the car, despite the disruption, and we focused on maximising every opportunity," said the 20-year-old."Losing laps in practice is not ideal, particularly on a street circuit like Baku where confidence builds with every lap and run."Hadjar was running with a fresh gearbox after struggling on his return to action.Verstappen, Leclerc and Russell clocked fastest lap times as Hamilton upset Lawson when he inadvertently baulked him. "Oh my God, that is so dangerous," he said. The stewards noted.But Russell emerged quickest, just as he did in the earlier opening practice, to complete a solid day's work for constructors' championship leaders Mercedes.Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are set to start at the back of the grid after taking significant grid penalties for exceeding their permitted number of engine component changes.They propped up the field in second practice, with Alonso only completing 11 laps as he finished last.

Red Bull's Hadjar to make racing return at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

French driver Isack Hadjar will make his racing return alongside Max Verstappen for Red Bull at this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix having recovered from the wrist injury that sidelined him from the last three races, the team said on Tuesday. New Zealander Liam Lawson, who had stepped in for Hadjar, will return to Racing Bulls. Japanese racer Yuki Tsunoda, who filled Lawson's seat alongside British rookie Arvid Lindblad, is set to step back into his reserve role. "Having made a successful recovery from his wrist injury, Isack will return to action at the Baku City Circuit on Thursday," Red Bull said in a statement."The team would like to sincerely thank Liam for his professionalism, dedication and hard work over the past three races."Stepping in under challenging circumstances, he delivered some impressive performances and made a valuable contribution to the team."Hadjar missed the Dutch, Italian and Spanish Grands Prix.Lawson, who started last year as Verstappen's Red Bull team mate before being demoted to Racing Bulls two races into the season, finished in the points in two of those three races.The opening day of practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is set for Thursday with the race on Saturday instead of the traditional Sunday slot due to the country's Remembrance Day.

"We've made some good steps with the car over the last few races and we have some good memories here," says Max Verstappen.

After karting fun, Verstappen looks to keep winning feeling going in Baku

* Verstappen has won twice before at Baku street track* Win would make him first triple winner at the venue* Dutchman went from last-to-first in a fun karting race against 100 competitors last week* Mercedes’ runaway championship leader Antonelli is gunning for a third successive win* Red Bull’s Hadjar will return to racing action after recovering from wrist injury  Red Bull’s four-time champion Max Verstappen, fresh from a last-to-first karting triumph, will be looking to keep that winning feeling going by chalking up a first Formula One victory of the year at this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.The Dutchman took just 14 laps and 35 minutes to scythe through a field of 100 competitors at Red Bull’s "Max vs. 100" karting challenge at Britain’s Silverstone last week.That may have been nothing more than a fun exhibition event for the 71-times Grand Prix winner, who jokingly pointed out that it was his first win of the season.But after six podium appearances, four in the last five races, and a second-place finish in Madrid Azerbaijan’s Baku street circuit could set the stage for Verstappen to break his victory duck for the year and become the venue’s first triple winner."Madrid was a good result for us and the team has been working hard on taking this positive momentum to make sure we maximise the performance of the car in Baku,” said the 28-year-old."We've made some good steps with the car over the last few races and we have some good memories here,” he added.The Baku street track, a 6-km-long mix of flat-out blasts and tight corners, has a reputation for unpredictable races.Seven different drivers have won the nine races at the venue, with Verstappen and former Mexican team mate Sergio Perez the only two to have won there more than once.With safety cars a regular feature of the race, Verstappen’s victory hopes may well rest on Red Bull’s ability to take on the might of Mercedes. The team’s runaway championship leader Kimi Antonelli heads into the weekend gunning for a third straight win and ninth of the season.The 20-year-old Italian, who won his home race at Monza from the back of the grid and followed that up with victory in the Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring, is 81 points clear of Briton George Russell, his team mate and closest title rival, after 14 rounds.Russell and third-placed Ferrari rival Lewis Hamilton have both ruled themselves out of realistic title contention.ANTONELLI CLOSING ON TITLEA win in Baku would only tighten Antonelli’s grip on the championship and move his prospect of becoming the first Italian to win a Formula One title since Alberto Ascari in 1953 further into the realm of when rather than if.McLaren’s reigning champion Lando Norris, meanwhile, will be fired up to make up for the win that got away from him.The Briton had been leading comfortably from pole in Madrid and seemed on course for his third win from four races when an ill-timed virtual safety car went against him. He eventually had to settle for third.French racer Isack Hadjar will return to action alongside Verstappen after recovering from a wrist injury that sidelined him for the last three races. Yuki Tsunoda is set to step back into his reserve role.The Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the first of a "triple header" of races on consecutive weekends, is being run on Saturday this year with the country marking its Remembrance Day on Sunday.Organisers are also celebrating a "Decade of Racin" in Baku, with the race joining the Formula One calendar in 2016 as the European Grand Prix. This year’s race will be the 10th around the Baku street track, with the event left off the calendar during the COVID pandemic in 2020.
