The Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, in co-operation with the Doha International Family Institute, organised a side event yesterday on ‘Family Well-being and Resilience in Times of Conflict’. The event was held on the sidelines of the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, and was attended by representatives of diplomatic missions in Geneva, international and regional organisations, and civil society organisations concerned with family and social development issues. Her Excellency the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Office at Geneva Dr. Hind Abdulrahman al-Muftah and Doha International Family Institute executive director Dr Sharifa al-Emadi spoke at the event. Other speakers included UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education Farida Shahid, UN Committee on the Rights of the Child vice-chair Dr Philippe Jaffe, and Doha International Family Institute director (Family Research and Policy) Dr Ahmed Aref. The discussion was moderated by Hafez al-Hashemi, UN Policy Director at Family Watch International.  

The State of Qatar reaffirmed the importance of enhancing women's participation in peace and security efforts, stressing that women are a fundamental pillar in achieving sustainable peace and building more stable and prosperous societies.This came in a statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani during the open debate of the United Nations Security Council on Women, Peace and Security, held in New York under the theme: "Peace is decided with women: Emerging from conflict by enhancing their participation."Her Excellency noted that ongoing wars and conflicts have profound repercussions for women and girls, as they are among the groups most affected by the consequences of crises. She stressed that this reality necessitates concerted international efforts to strengthen the role and status of women as key partners in achieving peace and security.She further pointed out that the international community cannot overlook the catastrophic humanitarian conditions faced by women in conflict zones, including in the occupied Palestinian territories, as a result of violations committed under the Israeli occupation. These conditions, she said, place Palestinian women and girls at risk and contribute to the deterioration of education, healthcare, and other essential services.In this regard, she referred to the latest report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Women, Peace and Security, which noted that grave violations committed against women and girls, including in the occupied Palestinian territories, provide stark examples of the serious dangers faced by women in crisis-affected environments.Her Excellency stressed that recent developments in the Gulf region have underscored the importance of preserving regional security and stability, given their direct impact on communities, including women and girls. She emphasized the need to continue efforts aimed at promoting dialogue and diplomacy, upholding international law, and resolving disputes through peaceful means, thereby fostering a safer and more stable environment that supports development, ensures the continuity of essential services, and empowers women and girls.She reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to continuing its intensive efforts and support for good offices initiatives aimed at strengthening regional security and stability in a manner that serves the interests of the peoples of the region and the world, including women and girls.In this context, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations reiterated Qatar's welcome of the agreement on a memorandum of understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran to address outstanding issues between them, including ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, considering this agreement an important step toward consolidating sustainable peace and promoting economic growth at both the regional and international levels.She also expressed appreciation for the willingness of both sides to move forward in addressing their differences through dialogue and peaceful means, and commended the efforts made by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and other regional and international parties to help reduce tensions, bridge differences, and facilitate the agreement.Her Excellency affirmed that Qatar's steadfast commitment to the Women, Peace and Security agenda is reflected in its initiatives and widely recognized diplomatic efforts in mediation, as well as its dedication to creating broader opportunities for women to participate in dialogue processes and decision-making.In this regard, she noted Qatar's accession to the campaign launched by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, entitled "Common Pledge for Women's Full, Equal and Meaningful Participation in Peace Processes." She also highlighted Qatar's active membership in the Arab Women Mediators Network and pointed to the country's hosting of the third meeting of the Working Group on Women, Peace and Security for the Arab States in Jan. 2025, which emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in supporting women's roles and leadership in peace and security efforts. 

The State of Qatar participated in the work of the 64th session of the two United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Body meetings held in Bonn, Germany, as part of the preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31), scheduled to be held in Antalya, Türkiye, in November.The State of Qatar’s delegation was headed by Assistant Undersecretary for Climate Change Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) Eng. Ahmad Mohammed Al Sada, along with a number of government agencies in the country.Participation included attending official sessions, technical consultations, and meetings of negotiating groups, which discussed the implementation of the Paris Agreement, adaptation to the impacts of climate change, climate transparency, providing financing to developing countries, transfer of modern technologies, capacity building, and training of national cadres.The meetings also discussed ways to support countries in implementing their climate plans, and to enhance international cooperation to address the effects of climate change, in addition to a number of issues that will be presented at COP31.The participants stressed the importance of reaching practical and balanced results that take into account the circumstances and capabilities of countries, and contribute to strengthening the implementation of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.Adherence to the principle of equity and common responsibilities was also emphasized, taking into account the different capabilities and national circumstances of countries, and providing the necessary support to developing countries to implement their climate plans and achieve their development goals.The Bonn meetings are a key milestone in the course of international climate negotiations, as they provide a platform to discuss technical issues and bring countries closer together, in preparation for reaching consensus outcomes during COP31.

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani received a phone call from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.They discussed co-operation between Qatar and the United Nations, along with ways to support and strengthen it. It also discussed regional developments, particularly the agreement reached between the US and Iran, and the efforts made to enhance security and stability in the region.The prime minister affirmed Qatar's continued full support for all good offices and efforts aimed at enhancing regional security and stability, and reaching sustainable solutions to outstanding issues through dialogue and peaceful means, in accordance with the principles of international law and good neighborliness, and contributing to opening new horizons for co-operation, development and prosperity, and achieving the common interests of the peoples of the region and the world. 

The State of Qatar has affirmed continued commitment to its efforts in mediation, dialogue, and preventive diplomacy to bolster peaceful efforts aimed at de-escalation and the preservation of international peace and security.  This came in Qatar's statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani before the UN General Assembly meeting on 'Strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution', under agenda item 31(b), at the UN Headquarters in New York.  Reiterating Qatar's position that mediation remains one of the most effective tools for settling disputes peacefully, preventing their outbreak, and building sustainable peace, Her Excellency said that mediation constitutes a fundamental pillar of preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution, and that the need to strengthen it is increasing, especially given the growing complexity of conflicts in light of modern technology, at a time when the world is witnessing the highest number of armed conflicts since the founding of the United Nations.  Her Excellency affirmed that the State of Qatar is proud of its longstanding role in mediation, noting that preventive diplomacy, mediation, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts are fundamental pillars of its foreign policy, based on the principles enshrined in its constitution and in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions.  HE the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN highlighted the joint mediation efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar, alongside the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States of America, and the Republic of Turkiye, in reaching the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, which was signed in October of last year, stressing Qatar's emphasis on the necessity for all parties to fulfill their commitments, fully implement the ceasefire agreement, and open the crossings to ensure the sustained and uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.  Her Excellency said that Qatar continues its efforts in eastern Congo through the Doha Framework for a Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed on November 15, 2025, while noting Qatar's mediation efforts in Afghanistan, which culminated in the signing of the peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban in Doha in February 2020.  Her Excellency renewed Qatar's appreciation and support for Pakistan's mediation efforts between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, affirming its full support for mediation efforts aimed at de-escalation, thereby contributing to enhanced security and stability in the region.

The State of Qatar affirmed that recognition of the Nakba is an indispensable foundation for any just, comprehensive, and lasting peaceful solution to the Palestinian issue. This was stated in Qatar's statement delivered by Her Excellency Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during the special meeting of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, marking the 78th anniversary of the Nakba at the UN headquarters in New York. Her Excellency emphasized the importance of adopting General Assembly Resolution 79/82, noting that Qatar takes pride in being among the sponsors of this resolution, as recognition of the Nakba is essential for achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue. She reaffirmed Qatar's commitment that the names of all Palestinian child martyrs will not be forgotten, describing them as victims of a continuing Nakba, whose suffering cannot be ignored by the international community. In this context, she highlighted Qatar's consistent positions regarding the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, renewing Qatar's condemnation of Israel's illegal decisions concerning the West Bank, including reclassifying Palestinian land as so-called "state land" of Israel, accelerating settlement activity, enacting a law allowing the death penalty in the West Bank, and restricting freedom of worship for Muslims and Christians in occupied Jerusalem. Regarding the Gaza Strip, Her Excellency stressed Qatar's insistence on full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, opening crossings to ensure sustainable and unobstructed humanitarian aid, reaffirming Qatar's firm commitment to the peace council from the first day of mediation efforts until the signing of the Sharm El Sheikh agreement with partners, and highlighting the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803. HE the Permanent Representative reiterated Qatar's principled and steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and the resilience of the Palestinian people, based on international legitimacy and the two-state solution. She emphasized the need to guarantee Palestinian self-determination, establish an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, end occupation and settlement activities, halt Israel's illegal practices in occupied territories, and ensure the right of return for Palestinian refugees in accordance with international law. Her Excellency also stressed Qatar's ongoing commitment to politically, diplomatically, and financially support UNRWA in fulfilling its mandate to serve the Palestinian people, in line with General Assembly Resolution 302 (IV).

The Qatar Foundation for Social Work, in co-operation with the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region, organised a roundtable discussion on the United Nations human rights system at the UN House in Lusail City. The event was attended by the foundation’s leadership and executive directors of its affiliated centers, as well as representatives from several UN agencies operating in Qatar. This roundtable discussion is part of the ongoing partnership between the foundation and the centre, aimed at enhancing the practical knowledge of the leadership at the affiliated centers and enabling them to engage with the United Nations human rights system and its mechanisms. In this context, the CEO of the Qatar Foundation for Social Work Rashid al-Naimi stressed that this initiative represents a significant milestone in the development of institutional social work, pointing out that engaging with the United Nations human rights system is no longer a supplementary option, but rather a natural extension of their developmental role and national responsibility. He added that they are working to build a conscious and capable institutional framework that translates international commitments into tangible practices that have a real impact on the lives of beneficiaries. Through these strategic partnerships, they seek to establish a leading Qatari model for social work, based on knowledge and strengthening the international presence of the Foundation and its centers as active partners in developing solutions to contemporary social challenges, he explained. He noted that the foundation focuses on empowering its affiliated centres to contribute effectively to national reports and international monitoring mechanisms, reflecting the reality of social work in Qatar and enhancing the integration of national efforts with international frameworks. In the same vein, Director of UN Training and Documentation Center for Southwest Asia and the Arab Region Dr Abeer al-Khraisha emphasized the importance of organising this workshop to strengthen the ongoing co-operation between the centre and the Qatar Foundation for Social Work, which began several years ago to enhance the capacities and competencies of the foundation’s affiliated centers, thereby strengthening the interaction of its staff, leaders, and affiliated centers with the United Nations human rights system and the core international treaty bodies relevant to their work. This, in turn, supports Qatar’s efforts to implement its international human rights obligations. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Technical Representative in Doha Biplove Choudhary affirmed that the programme values ​​this dialogue with the Qatar Foundation for Social Work as an important step towards strengthening the co-ordination of efforts within the United Nations system and supporting institutional capacities to contribute to achieving sustainable development priorities. The roundtable included a comprehensive review of the general framework of the United Nations human rights system, including the mandate of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the role of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It also highlighted the foundation’s consultative status with the council and the opportunities it offers to enhance its international presence, as well as its contribution to social development and human rights issues. The sessions also covered the core international human rights conventions relevant to the work of social centers, with a focus on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. They also reviewed mechanisms for preparing national and shadow reports, and ways to engage with treaty bodies. In the same context, the roles of several UN agencies in Qatar were reviewed, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The roundtable emphasized the importance of strengthening co-ordination and co-operation between the Foundation and its international partners, which supports Qatar’s efforts to fulfill its international commitments and reinforces an integrated approach to social work based on knowledge and effective partnerships. 

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced the death of one peacekeeper and the serious injury of another following a projectile explosion at one of its positions near Adshit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon."We do ​not know the origin of the projectile. We have launched an investigation ⁠to determine all of the circumstances", UNIFIL said in a statement.UNIFIL reiterated its call on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times, including refraining from any actions that could endanger peacekeepers.UNIFIL emphasized that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes. 

Pakistan said Sunday that it was ready to broker and host "meaningful talks" between the United States and Iran to bring an end to their war, outlining growing support for its peace efforts, including from the United Nations and China.The government in Islamabad has emerged as a key facilitator, relaying messages between the two sides to try to stop the conflict from escalating.Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar hosted his counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkiye for several hours in the Pakistani capital Sunday, with concern high about the impact of the fighting, including the choking of maritime traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.In a televised statement, Dar, who is also Pakistan's deputy prime minister, said the visitors "expressed their full support" for potential US-Iran talks in Islamabad."The foreign ministers advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable pathway to prevent conflicts and to promote regional peace and harmony," he added.Pakistan is seeking to capitalise on its longstanding links with Tehran and close contacts in the Gulf, as well as the personal rapport that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the country's powerful army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, have struck up with US President Donald Trump.Dar and Sharif have held several calls with senior government ministers in Iran, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and were "actively engaged" with the US administration, the foreign minister said."In this context, Pakistan is very happy that both Iran and the US have expressed their confidence in Pakistan to facilitate the talks," he added."Pakistan will be honoured to host and facilitate meaningful talks between the two sides in coming days, for a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the ongoing conflict."Dar has spoken to his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. They "fully support" Pakistan's push for peace, as do other governments around the world, he added.Sunday's talks, held under tight security and with no US, Israeli or Iranian representation, addressed efforts to stop the conflict from spreading and to encourage "a negotiations track" between Tehran and Washington to prevent the region "slipping into a state of complete chaos", Cairo said.All three visiting ministers — Badr Abdelatty from Egypt, Hakan Fidan from Turkiye, and Saudi Arabia's Faisal bin Farhan — also met Sharif as well as Munir.Tehran has refused to admit to holding official talks with Washington but has passed a response to Trump's 15-point plan to end the war via Islamabad, Iran's Tasnim news agency has reported.Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Friday he expected a direct US-Iran meeting in Pakistan "very soon".But Shuja Nawaz, founder director of the South Asia Center at the Atlantic Council, said Pakistan had taken on a "challenging task" in trying to get Washington and Tehran to the table."It could only do this with Saudi blessing," Nawaz, author of *The Battle for Pakistan: The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighbourhood, told AFP."The real challenge for Pakistan is to bring together a single person in the White House who changes his mind frequently and an Iranian government that is debating whether to fight a long war or find an end to its economy being further devastated."Israeli autonomous decision-making will further complicate any Trump decision to claim victory and end a conflict that is hurting his popularity at home. Pakistan has limited leverage over both the US and Iran; none with Israel."Will it remain an event planner only?"Pakistan's efforts make economic sense: it relies on oil and gas imports through the Strait of Hormuz. Continued disruption to shipping could worsen fuel supplies, driving up prices and forcing further austerity measures.Dar said late on Saturday that Iran had allowed 20 more Pakistani-flagged vessels — or two ships daily — to pass through the Strait. 

Qatar has sent its ninth identical letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Permanent Representative of the US to the United Nations (UN) and President of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the month of March, Michael Waltz, regarding the latest developments of the Iranian aggression on its territory. The letter was sent by Her Excellency the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani. The letter noted that from the beginning of the attack on Qatar on February 28 until March 16, its air defence systems have intercepted several hostile aerial targets, pointing out that civilian injuries resulted from these heinous attacks. It stated that all damages and losses resulting from the attacks will be assessed by the relevant authorities, noting that further updates would be provided as they become available. The letter emphasised that these attacks by Iran continued even after the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2817 (2026), co-sponsored by 136 countries, which condemned in the strongest terms Iran’s heinous attacks on Qatar and neighbouring countries, and demanded an immediate end to all such attacks. It also reiterated Qatar’s strong condemnation of this targeting and its full right to respond in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, a right affirmed by Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), in a manner commensurate with the nature of the aggression, in defence of its sovereignty and to safeguard its security and national interests.Qatar also requested that this letter be circulated as an official document of the Security Council. 

Her Excellency the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations (UN) Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani held a meeting with the deputy chairman of Krygyzstan’s Cabinet, Edil Baisalov, at the Permanent Mission in New York.During the meeting, HE Sheikha Alya reiterated Qatar's condemnation of the ongoing Iranian attacks on Qatar’s territory, referring in this context to UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which condemned Iranian attacks on the territories of the Gulf Co-operation Council member states and called for their immediate cessation.Baisalov affirmed his country's solidarity with Qatar and highlighted the importance of consolidating security and stability in the region. 

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani participated in the 50th extraordinary meeting of the GCC Ministerial Council, held Sunday via video conference, in the presence of Their Excellencies the GCC Foreign Ministers, to discuss developments in the Iranian aggression against the GCC countries.At the outset of the meeting, the Ministerial Council voiced its strongest condemnation of the Iranian missile attacks targeting the territories of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman and Jordan, in flagrant violation of their sovereignty.The Ministerial Council also affirmed the solidarity of all GCC countries in addressing Iranian attacks and defending their sovereignty, security, and national interests, while reserving their right to respond and defend themselves in accordance with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.The council stressed that this heinous targeting is contrary to the provisions of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the principles of good neighborliness, and cannot be accepted under any justification or pretext, urging the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately cease any escalatory actions that would undermine regional security and stability.
