China's Yin wins in Shanghai for back-to-back LPGA titles

Home hero Yin Ruoning celebrated back-to-back LPGA Tour titles with a thrilling one-stroke victory in Shanghai on Sunday. China's Yin carded a final-round four-under-par 68 at an energised Sheshan Golf Club to emerge victorious from a showdown with overnight leader Choi Hye-jin. The 24-year-old Yin, winner at the FM Championship in Boston in August on her previous start on tour, finished on 11-under, one shot clear of Choi. It was Yin's seventh LPGA title and her second in Shanghai, having won the event in 2024. "I think this tournament means everything to me because you have the chance to play in front of all your family and friends and in front of all the amazing fans," she said."It's just amazing." South Korea's Choi was left kicking herself, having been in the lead after all three previous rounds and seemingly on course for her maiden LPGA crown. She started the final day with a two-shot advantage over Yin but successive bogeys at the seventh and eighth saw her lead evaporate. Roared on by the home fans, Yin was on the charge, four of her five birdies coming in her last nine holes.She sank a nerveless putt for birdie on the 17th that effectively sealed the deal, and marked victory with a low-key pump of the fists. "I mean, I still have emotions, but this time very calm, more calm than FM," she said, comparing her understated celebration this time with her jubilant win two months ago."I think it's a dream come true to win at home, and I think I'm lucky to win it twice. "I hope this is just the beginning." South Korea's Amy Yang was third on eight-under, with Japan's Rio Takeda another shot back.

LIV’s ‘white knight’ eyes $100M team valuations; Sergio Garcia granted exit

LIV Golf has secured its initial investment as part of a bankruptcy restructuring agreement, with CEO Scott O'Neil dubbing private equity backer Ted Goldthorpe the league's "white knight."O'Neil and Goldthorpe appeared together at the Sportico Invest Conference in London and commented on the progress of their restructuring support agreement for the 5-year-old golf league once backed by Saudi royal money."We're moving from a Saudi-type business plan to a -- as I like to say -- a ‘business' business plan," O'Neil said.LIV filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early September and entered an agreement with Goldthorpe's firm, BC Partners Credit. The agreement was contingent on at least 50% of players with financial claims against the league agreeing to participate in the league's reboot, the so-called LIV 2.0, by Oct. 13. That deadline has been extended to Oct. 25. That group also must represent at least two-thirds of the total dollar amount of player claims.Late Monday, BC Partners announced its initial investment in LIV Golf, which it said was the first part of a $300 million outlay "to help LIV Golf emerge from its restructuring as a fiscally strong, sustainable, team-focused golf league that complements the existing professional tours and contributes to the long-term potential of the sport."Part of the plan to become more fiscally sustainable appears to be raising the value of LIV's 13 franchises, such as Jon Rahm's Legion XIII and Bryson DeChambeau's Crushers GC, of which the captains currently hold a financial stake.Goldthorpe was asked at the conference what the best-case scenario would be for the franchises' future valuations."I think you could easily see a path in very short order to over a $100 million valuation per team," Goldthorpe said. "I think that's a real number."BBC reported that the agreement created an extension until Oct. 25 for players to negotiate terms to return to LIV. Players are owed "at least" $45 million in all, per the report, and have the option to leave. GARCIA'S CONTRACT TERMINATED AT HIS REQUESTOne of the most famous names attached to LIV did just that on Tuesday, with the league terminating Sergio Garcia's contract at the Spaniard's request.Garcia's attorney argued in a six-page court filing last week that terminating his client's previous contract "should not be objectionable" to the league because it "is consistent with (LIV Golf's) statement that the agreement is ‘not part of (LIV Golf's) go-forward business plan.'"Garcia, 46, won the 2017 Masters and has collected 11 PGA Tour titles and 16 wins on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) over his career. He recently told reporters he plans to play in DP World Tour events in 2027. The DP World Tour reportedly is unwilling to grant releases to golfers who want to play on its tour and in LIV Golf next year.LIV Golf's next bankruptcy hearing will be held Wednesday in Trenton, N.J.

Thailand's Jeeno overcomes late wobble to win Lotte Championship

Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul bagged her fourth title of the year with a three-shot victory at the LPGA Tour's Lotte Championship in Hawaii on Sunday. The world number two carded six birdies in a four-under-par 68 to finish on 21 under par at Hoakalei Country Club on Oahu. South Korea's Yoon In-a was second on 18 under after also finishing with a four-under-par 68. Thai star Jeeno suffered a scare coming down the stretch with a double-bogey six on the 16th that dropped her to 19 under.But back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 restored her cushion and averted the possibility of a play-off. "I totally have no idea how I did that," Jeeno said of her birdie-birdie finish. "It was a really good battle with In-a. She played incredible on the front nine."I knew I had to focus on my game. The 16th was terrible, a terrible hole for me. But I just tell myself that it's two holes left and everything can happen." Japan's Miyu Yamashita finished in third place on 17 under after her final-round 67, one shot ahead of fourth-placed Auston Kim of the United States.China's Michelle Zhang and Sweden's Maja Stark shared fifth place on 15 under, six off the lead.
