Smriti Mandhana became the highest run-scorer in women's T20 international cricket on Sunday as India crushed Bangladesh by 114 runs in the Asian Games semi-finals with fellow opener Shafali Verma hitting her maiden hundred. Mandhana scored 37 off 19 balls with five fours and two sixes in her side's 195-4 in 20 overs at the Korogi Athletic Park ground in Nagoya.In the process she went past New Zealand all-rounder Suzie Bates's 4,758 runs at the top of the all-time list to stand on 4,788 runs from 171 innings. Verma was the star on the day for India, scoring 100 not out off 49 balls with three fours and nine sixes -- her maiden T20 international century.Verma reached her hundred off the final ball of the 20 overs, and was clearly emotional as she took off her helmet and raised her bat in celebration towards her applauding teammates on the boundary. India then skittled Bangladesh for 81 in 15.4 overs.India will meet Sri Lanka in Tuesday's final after they earlier chased down Pakistan's 177-4 with more than two overs to spare. Sri Lanka raced to 178-2 off 17.5 overs largely thanks to captain Chamari Athapaththu's sparkling unbeaten 83 off 50 balls, laced with six sixes and seven fours.Pakistan will play Bangladesh for the bronze medal, also on Tuesday.

India coach Gautam Gambhir said Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his chance to break into the side after he left the 15-year-old prodigy on the sidelines of their three-match Twenty20 series sweep against Afghanistan.Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson opened for India in the series, with Abhishek scoring the third-fastest century in T20 internationals in Thursday's 127-run victory in New Delhi.Sooryavanshi, who was the highest scorer in this year's Indian Premier League, made his international debut against England in July but the top-order batter failed to make an impact as the hosts dominated India in the T20 series.He scored two fifties against Zimbabwe in Harare later that month but has not played for India since."Whether you’re a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old, when you have to wait for your opportunity you have to wait for your opportunity," Gambhir told reporters after the match."We know the kind of talent he has and what he can do, but someone who has been performing for the last two to three years will always be ahead of someone who has just entered the team."Sooryavanshi will travel to Nagoya for India's Asian Games campaign, with a one-off T20 against hosts Japan set for Tuesday before the Asiad quarter-final on September 28."Whenever he gets his run, he will get a longer run as well ... we want competition and talent in the dressing room," Gambhir added. 

Opener Abhishek Sharma hit a record T20 century off 30 balls to set up a crushing 127-run win for India in the third match against Afghanistan and sweep the series 3-0 on Thursday. Left-handed Abhishek's ton was the fastest in a T20 international between full Test-playing nations as he guided India to 221-7 at New Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium.Afghanistan, who were the official hosts for the series, checked the opposition surge after Abhishek departed for 108 off 34 balls and India lost their way from 142-1 in 10 overs. But the Afghan batters once again disappointed and were bowled out for 94 in 14.1 overs.Afghanistan had posted 156-8 and 159-8 while batting first in the first two matches. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel struck twice in his first over to send back Rahmanullah Gurbaz, for 15, and Sediqullah Atal, for one, and Afghanistan could never recover from the losses.Seam bowler Nitish Kumar Reddy also took two wickets in one over to return figures of 3-25. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi wrapped up the Afghanistan innings with his third strike of the match. Abhishek stood out with his third T20 century as he surpassed Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza's ton off 33 balls against Gambia in 2024 and Finn Allen's effort from the same number of deliveries in New Zealand's T20 World Cup semi-final win over South Africa earlier this year in India."It's just watch the ball and play according to it," said Abhishek, who was named player of the match,. "It's very simple from day one. I just want to express myself. Just see the ball and hit the ball. You can't be sure you'll be doing well all the time but the culture we've developed in our team is to dominate and it's been going well so far."The only two faster T20I hundreds came in matches betwen the lower-tiered associate members of the ICC. Sahil Chauhan of Estonia holds the overall record of 27 balls after his century against Cyprus two years ago while Muhammad Fahad needed just 29 balls for his ton for Turkey against Bulgaria in 2025.'Pleasing to the eye'Abhishek tore into the Afghanistan bowling attack after India were invited to bat first. "It wasn't an easy wicket, but the way Abhishek played today was flawless, and it was just pleasing to the eye," said India captain Shreyas Iyer.The swashbuckling opener hit a six to reach 99. He completed the hundred with a single and sat in meditation pose to celebrate. He finally fell for 108 off 34 balls to leg-spinner Rashid Khan. The 26-year-old's knock was laced with nine fours and 11 sixes.His opening stand of 142 with Sanju Samson, who hit 50, put India on course for a big total but the Afghan bowlers hit back with regular wickets. Tilak Varma was run out for two by Rashid and Samson departed after his second successive half-century as he fell to pace bowler Azmatullah Omarzai.Omarzai struck another blow helped by a stunning catch by Rashid in the deep to send back Shivam Dube for 14. India raised their 100 in six overs but managed just 79 from the last 60 balls. India now head to Japan for the Asian Games starting September 19 at Nagoya-Aichi. Afghanistan will send a largely different team to the Asian Games under Darwish Rasooli. BRIEF SCORES:India 221 for 7 (Abhishek 108, Samson 50, Omarzai 2-27) beat Afghanistan 94 (Zadran 25, Reddy 3-25, Bishnoi 3-26) by 127 runs. 

India's T20 captain Shreyas Iyer on Saturday said Jasprit Bumrah needs game time in the three matches against Afghanistan to regain confidence after returning from an injury. Bumrah was added to the Indian squad for the Afghanistan series at New Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, starting Sunday, but needed fitness clearance to play.The pace spearhead bowled full steam in training on Friday and looks set to make the XI in the opener. "He has played so much cricket over the years. He is immensely experienced but at the end of the day, if you would ask me as an individual who is coming out of an injury, I would want more game time and more confidence leading up to a certain tournament," Iyer told reporters."I interacted with him yesterday and he is in that mindset where he wants to come and perform for the team and see to it that we win championships." The 32-year-old Bumrah has not bowled since the second one-day international of the England series in Cardiff on July 16 due to an impact injury. Bumrah's return is eagerly awaited and Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran said his team is ready to tackle the fast bowler. "He is one of the best, he is my favourite fast bowler," said Zadran. "We as a group never complicate things for ourselves. We have a very good plan for him. Hopefully we can play better cricket against Jasprit Bumrah and the Indian cricket team."Afghanistan, who have long used India and the United Arab Emirates as home venues, will officially be the hosts for the series. India have a difficult selection decision to make in the top-order, with Iyer admitting it will be a "tough call" to choose between Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi."All three of them, having them in the team is a luxury first of all, and they are flawless in their own departments," said Iyer. "Well, it is going to be a tight call because they have been performing consistently. And see, whoever gets the opportunity, it's definitely for the team's benefit." 

Sri Lanka's white-ball captain Kusal Mendis will not play in the away T20 series against England because of injury, the cricket board said Friday.The 31-year-old will be replaced as skipper by deputy Charith Asalanka for the three-match series, which will be followed by three ODIs.Sri Lanka did not say whether wicketkeeper-batsman Mendis would be available for the ODIs.Fast bowler Binura Fernando is also undergoing rehabilitation for injury."Mendis suffered a right hamstring injury while Fernando sustained a back injury," SLC said in a statement.Batsman Pavan Rathnayake and fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka replace them.The first T20 is on September 15 at Southampton, with the second two days later in Cardiff. The final T20 is on September 19 at Manchester.The ODI series begins on September 22 at Chester-le-Street, followed by matches at Headingley on September 24 and The Oval on September 27.Revised T20 squad: Charith Asalanka (capt), Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Lahiru Udara, Kamindu Mendis, Janith Liyanage, Dasun Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Tharindu Rathnayake, Dushmantha Chameera, Eshan Malinga, Nuwan Thushara, Pavan Rathnayake and Dilshan Madushanka. 

The reigning T20 world champions India will play Japan for the first time in an international match when the teams meet at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi on September 22, the two cricket boards said on Friday. The T20 fixture will mark the first time Japan will face a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in men's cricket. "To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to the home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association," JCA Chief Executive Naoki Miyaji said in a statement. Japan became an Affiliate Member of the ICC in 1989 before gaining Associate status in 2005. "The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan," BCCI Honorary Secretary, Mr Devajit Saikia, said.  

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has heard concerns over a lack of five-star hotel accommodation for players at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan, a Sri Lankan official said Monday.The men's and women's T20 cricket will be played at Japan's newly built cricket ground in Nisshin starting September 17. But reports of tents serving as dressing rooms for players, distant washroom facilities and lack of top-class accommodation for cricketers have raised eyebrows."There are some concerns with regard to the quality of accommodation being provided and also with regard to the logistics," Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Prakash Schaffter told reporters in Colombo. He said the ACC executive committee had discussed the Asian Games with "some degree of detail" at its recently concluded meeting in Bangkok.Member states had agreed to send representatives to examine the grounds and other logistical arrangements, but hoped the tournament would still go ahead, he said. "There is a lack of available five-star rooms. Cricketers are generally provided with five-star accommodation," he said, adding that the host city did not have luxury hotels to accommodate all athletes and spectators.However, he said the ground prepared for the T20 series was suitable for play. Media reports in India said the country's cricket board was unhappy with the Asian Games' arrangements for the tournament and looking to send a second-string team.India have named a 15-member squad led by Shreyas Iyer and including teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the Asiad. The Bangladesh Cricket Board said the member boards of the ACC are looking at the concerns regarding player facilities at the Asian Games."The cricket part of the Asian Games will be looked after by the Asian Cricket Council," BCB cricket operations manager Shahriar Nafees said. "The individual boards have already discussed it at the ACC forum, and they will take a collective decision on the issue." 

Former India captain Suryakumar Yadav said he was disappointed at being dropped from the national T20 side months after leading India to a successful defence of their men's T20 World Cup title. The 35-year-old took charge in 2024, guiding India to 42 wins in 50 completed T20 internationals and helping them become the first team to retain the men's T20 World Cup crown. The final victory over New Zealand in March was his last T20 appearance for India and he was replaced as captain by Shreyas Iyer. "The guy they've picked, I have played a lot of cricket with him. I know he's a good player, good human being, good captain also," Suryakumar said on Aakash Chopra's YouTube show. "So, I didn't resent the decision but was disappointed because we didn't lose a series for two years, won Asia Cup, T20 World Cup - you want the same thing to go forward. When everything is going well, then why the change?" India lost their first T20 series to Ireland in June and were thrashed 4-0 by England under Iyer, with a 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe their lone series win since lifting the World Cup. Suryakumar scored only 242 runs in nine World Cup matches at an average of 30.25 after struggling in the lead-up to the tournament. He managed only 270 runs for Mumbai Indians in this year's Indian Premier League. "For one-and-a-half months I kept thinking, how can this happen? How is it possible? We just won the World Cup. Yes, IPL wasn't as good as how I wanted," he said. India are due to play three one-day internationals and five T20 matches against West Indies from September 27, with the squad yet to be announced. 

India's Ajinkya Rahane said on Friday he will play in the inaugural European T20 Premier League starting this month, thanks to a phone call from Australian cricket great Steve Waugh.Rahane, 38, retired from international cricket last week, bringing the curtain down on a career highlighted by his inspirational leadership during India's 2020-21 Test series triumph in Australia.But just minutes after he announced his retirement, Rahane said Waugh convinced him to sign up for ETPL franchise Amsterdam Flames, which he co-owns with field hockey player Jamie Dwyer and businessman Tim Thomas."The moment I took the call of retirement, I think within five minutes, Steve Waugh called me and he said, 'Are you interested in playing for me?'," Rahane said in an interview with AFP."I've watched him since my younger days. We've been in touch for many years now. I said, 'I was in a different mindset because I just announced my retirement'."Rahane decided to take the plunge after discussing the offer with his family."That day I spoke to my family. I still wanted to play cricket, so I thought, let's take this opportunity. Let's probably create that impact globally," he said.Rahane played 85 Tests, 90 one-day internationals and 20 T20 internationals for India, but fell out of favour after a dip in form and made his last international appearance in 2023.His defining moment came during India's 2020-21 tour of Australia, when regular captain Virat Kohli returned home after the opening Test for the birth of his child.'Leadership lessons'Rahane stepped in to lead a depleted side after a heavy defeat in the first Test and guided India to victories in Melbourne and Brisbane, securing a memorable 2-1 series win.The third Test in Sydney ended in a draw.The soft-spoken middle-order batsman said the tour reinforced lessons about leadership and teamwork."I think that series was very special," Rahane said. "That series taught us a lot. It's always about the team. It's never about the individual."When you become a captain, the responsibility changes. But the mindset of a leader, for me, was always there. There were many leadership lessons in that series."Rahane has captained teams across international, domestic and franchise cricket, including Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy and several Indian Premier League sides, most recently Kolkata Knight Riders.He said he preferred to trust his instincts and bring his "own style" of leadership."I always tried to be myself, rather than copying anyone or taking something from different captains. I always tried to back my instinct, back my own style."While Rahane hopes to move into coaching and mentoring after his playing days are over, he said the ETPL offered an opportunity to help develop emerging talent in Europe.Led by Mitchell Marsh, the Amsterdam Flames are one of six ETPL franchises, along with teams based in Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Rotterdam.The tournament will feature 32 matches between August 26 and September 20. 

Stand-in coach VVS Laxman praised the growing maturity of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, after the 15-year-old's 81 off 49 balls helped India complete a Twenty20 series sweep against Zimbabwe.Sooryavanshi's second half-century in four days steered India to 192-5 before Zimbabwe were restricted to 157-7 to complete a 3-0 series win on Sunday."Very mature. And that's what I really appreciate about Vaibhav," said Laxman.Sooryavanshi tempered his natural attacking instincts in an innings containing eight fours and four sixes on a sluggish surface."With each and every experience, each and every match, he understands, he assesses and he gets better," said Laxman, who was in temporary charge after Gautam Gambhir sat out the Zimbabwe tour."I think he does a lot of reviews of each and every practice session, not only matches," Laxman said.Sooryavanshi rose to prominence with a string of fearless performances for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League,Against England earlier this month he became the youngest player to represent India.His first taste of international cricket proved challenging, however, with the teenager managing 42 runs in three innings as India suffered a 4-0 series defeat in England, following a 2-0 loss in Ireland.Sooryavanshi bounced back in Zimbabwe, helping India dominate a side ranked 10 places below them."I'm not surprised by the way this series has gone," Laxman said before again talking about Sooryavanshi."He was disappointed not to get a hundred, but we told him it's not going to be the first or the last opportunity he'll get."He's got a long career ahead, and he has the attitude and mindset to improve every day."
