Super sub Mikel Merino broke Belgian hearts and sent Spain through to a World Cup semi-final against France with a late goal in a gripping 2-1 win on Friday.The stunning finish at SoFi Stadium sets up a tantalizing showdown between European champions Spain and the tournament favorites France and the red-hot Kylian Mbappe in Dallas on Tuesday.But it was heartbreak for Belgium's substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens, sent on late, who spilled a shot into the path of Merino.The dramatic finale came after Fabian Ruiz had opened the scoring for Spain, before Charles De Ketelaere grabbed one back for Belgium against the run of play before halftime.Welcoming Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku back to the starting XI, Belgium were rocked by a hamstring injury during the warm-ups to captain Youri Tielemans that hit them hard.Having already lost Amadou Onana to a ruptured ACL, the Red Devils would have to play a near second-choice midfield against the Spanish possession masters.Ruiz, brought in for Pedri, wasted no time combining with Rodri to dominate the ball and Barcelona's teen sensation Lamine Yamal curled an early shot just wide of the far post. DOKU WAS BRIGHT FOR BELGIUMBut opposing winger Doku was bright for Belgium, cutting in from the left to feed De Ketelaere, the striker fresh from his brace against the United States on Monday.Still, it was Spain who struck first. On the half-hour mark, Pedro Porro played a sharp one-two with Lamine Yamal before expertly cutting it back from near the byline to Dani Olmo.Olmo's shot was parried by Thibaut Courtois, but fell to Ruiz, who fired it home.Suddenly it was all Spain. They pinged passes around the Belgian half as though this World Cup quarter-final was a training exercise, laid on for an A-list crowd featuring Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz and Noel Gallagher.But Belgium, having fought back astonishingly late from 2-0 down in the round-of-32 to dispatch Senegal, did not panic.They grabbed one back in the 41st minute. De Bruyne slid a through ball wide to Timothy Castagne. His cross found De Ketelaere, who perfectly timed his run and outmuscled Barcelona youngster Pau Cubarsi to head home.It was the first goal Spain had conceded this World Cup.Improbably, Belgium almost grabbed another before half-time. Breaking from a Spain corner, De Ketelaere's pass to a totally clear Doku was barely intercepted by Olmo.Yamal grew into the game after the break, nearly finding Mikel Oyarzabal with an incisive cross that was well blocked by a charging Courtois.Belgian coach Rudi Garcia brought on veteran striker Romelu Lukaku, who had scored from the bench in three straight games.The game opened up. A Belgian cross hit Rodri's arm but the impact was deemed accidental. Oyarzabal had a shot saved from a close, tight angle. FORCED OFF BY INJURYA tearful Courtois was forced off by injury after 70 minutes. He was replaced by Lammens, the 24-year-old Manchester United 'keeper making his World Cup debut in daunting circumstances.It turned out to be a nightmare.In the 88th minute, Cubarsi shot low from range, and Lammens should have held onto the ball. Instead substitute Mikel Merino was first to the rebound, smashing it home.It was the Arsenal midfielder's second straight late winner from the bench, after he scored the crucial goal against Portugal in stoppage time on Monday.Late on Alexis Saelemaekers rounded Unai, but was unable to find Lukaku in front of an open goal.As the whistle blow, Courtois came out to embrace a distraught Lammens, while other members of Belgium's ageing "Golden Generation" stood immobile and disbelieving.For Spain there were embraces and fist pumps, before attention quickly turns to their blockbuster clash with France. 

U.S. ⁠President Donald ‌Trump said on Wednesday that the ‌memorandum of understanding signed with Iran to end the conflict was "over", ⁠adding he did not want to engage with Tehran, calling the Iranian leadership "sick people".Speaking at a summit of NATO leaders in Ankara, Trump also said he had ordered his Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off trade ties with Spain, calling Madrid a "terrible partner" in NATO. The twin announcements overshadowed a summit that ​European leaders hoped would be focused on projecting unity and support for Ukraine, and put a lid on a series of rows that have threatened ‌to blow NATO apart. The U.S. ⁠unleashed new ​military strikes on Iran and revoked a licence allowing Iran ​to sell oil in response to attacks on three tankers. It was the latest blow to a fragile ceasefire agreement in a war that is deeply unpopular in Europe."It's a very interesting question. To me, I think it's over. I don't want to deal with them," Trump said when asked whether the interim accord with Iran that envisaged hammering out a long-term peace deal by mid-August was over. "They're scum. They're ‌sick people. They're led ‌by sick people." "As far ⁠as I'm concerned, it's just a waste of time dealing with ⁠them," he said. Washington ⁠and Madrid have been at loggerheads, with Spain explicitly rejecting Trump's demands for European countries to sharply increase military spending to pay for their own defence. "Spain is a wasted cause. We don't want to do any trade business with Spain anymore," Trump said. "By the way, ​I'd like to cut it off. Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don't participate, they don't pay. I don't want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, including visits." In response, the office of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said it was treating Trump's statements as business as usual, adding that bilateral relations benefited both countries.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored his third and fourth goals of the World Cup and Spain eased into the last 16 with a 3-0 victory over Austria on Thursday afternoon in Inglewood, Calif.Pedro Porro added his first-ever goal for Spain after halftime, a header that, for all intents and purposes, ensured victory against an opponent ⁠that rarely threatened.Fullback Marc Cucurella assisted both of Oyarzabal’s goals for La Roja, which outshot Das Team 23-5 overall ⁠and led 10-0 in efforts on target.That was more than enough to secure a round of 16 meeting with the winner of Portugal and Croatia, who play later on Thursday in Toronto.Spain have now outscored their opponents 8-0 while continuing their run as one of two teams yet to concede at this World Cup, alongside Mexico.Austria remain in search of their first knockout stage World Cup victory since their third-place finish in 1954. They last advanced beyond the ⁠initial group stage in 1982, when there was a second group phase before the semifinals and finals.Spain's 18-year-old star Lamine Yamal played 85 minutes in his longest outing since mid-April following a hamstring tear that ended his club season early.And while he had some frustrating near-misses in attempting to add his second goal of the tournament, it ultimately didn't matter.Spain had an earlier apparent goal waved off for a foul on Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager before taking the lead through Oyarzabal in the 36th minute.Pedri made the run up the middle ⁠before playing the ball wide to Cucurella on the left. Cucurella ⁠dragged his cross ⁠low toward the penalty spot where Oyarzabal met it with a simple low finish.Porro made it 2-0 in the 66th minute on arguably Spain's best attack of the match. This time it was Cucurella in the middle winning a 50-50 ball following an Austrian tackle and playing the ball wide to Alex Baena, who curled in a tempting short cross.Porro may not have scored a national team goal before, but he certainly looked the part, arriving in the box at the right time to guide an easy header across the line.Cucurella connected with Oyarzabal again in the 89th minute and the Real Sociedad forward became the fourth player at the tournament to score multiple goals in multiple games. The others? Argentina's Lionel Messi, France's Kylian Mbappe and Norway's Erling Haaland.  

Spain edged Uruguay 1-0 on Friday to top Group H and reach the knockout stage of the World Cup, with Alex Baena’s first-half strike enough to settle a tense, physical contest and leave Marcelo Bielsa's side out of the tournament.Spain finished with seven points from two wins and a draw, while newcomers Cape Verde claimed the second knockout berth after three consecutive draws. Uruguay bowed out with two points, level ⁠with bottom-placed Saudi Arabia."Today's game really put us to the test," said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente. "We've played some very demanding matches, and the team always steps ⁠up. We played a different kind of game today, and the team stepped up again."We're very happy because we've come through three very tough matches," he added.Baena broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute when he found space near the edge of the area and drove in a powerful effort that veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to hold, the ball slipping from his grasp and trickling into the net.It was a costly mistake from Muslera, who Bielsa said decided to come off at halftime. The goal was scored with Manuel Ugarte and Lamine Yamal down injured as play continued, but Baena kept his focus and Spain took full advantage."It might be one of the goals that has made me happiest," Baena ⁠said. "We knew it was going to be a tough match."They were fighting for their lives, and we were fighting for the top spot. We didn't show our best form, but we competed very well," he added. AGGRESSIVE START BY URUGUAYUruguay had begun aggressively, determined to deny Lamine space on the right, with Guillermo Varela and the rest of the defence keeping tight to the 18-year-old.Spain mostly threatened from set pieces in the opening half. Pau Cubarsi headed wide from a Baena corner in the 16th minute and missed again from close range four minutes later following another Baena delivery.Uruguay's best first-half chance came when Federico Valverde pressed Rodri into an error in the 27th minute and then found Darwin Nunez inside the area, but the forward chose to attempt a backheel rather than shoot and the opportunity went begging.The ⁠second half followed a similar pattern, with Uruguay pushing but lacking precision in the final third. Federico ⁠Vinas replaced Valverde and almost made an ⁠impact, but his left-footed effort from a Maxi Araujo cross flew high and wide."I wasn't able to make the most of the potential the Uruguayan players had. (After Valverde was substituted) I tried to get the team to be more aggressive on offence," Bielsa said, adding it was aimed at improving Uruguay's creativity.Spain introduced Dani Olmo, who missed a chance from the middle of the box after a cross from Lamine in the 63rd minute, but Luis de la Fuente's side looked in control.Uruguay pressed late, but Unai Simon denied Mathias Olivera and then saved Nicolas de la Cruz's right-footed shot from outside the box.Ferran Torres nearly doubled Spain's lead when he hit the crossbar with a right-footed effort from just inside the area following a pass from Fabian Ruiz.Inside the Guadalajara stadium, Mexican and Spanish fans sang "Cielito Lindo" with the chorus "sing and do not cry" as Uruguay's frustration mounted.That boiled over in stoppage time when Agustin Canobbio was shown a red card for a reckless challenge on Cubarsi, capping a bitter end to Uruguay's campaign.  

212 fatalities have been recorded in Spain due to the severe heatwave that has been affecting the country and the wider Mediterranean region since Sunday.The Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid stated in a report published today that it recorded at least 212 fatalities between Sunday and Wednesday, noting that these deaths can be linked to the heatwave currently gripping Spain.The institute explained that these estimates are based on the MOMO mortality monitoring system, which compiles daily death statistics in the country and compares them to projected levels based on historical records.The report noted that data showed an increase in the mortality rate of 98 deaths during the same four days in 2025, during what was considered the hottest summer on record for a country on the front lines of climate change. It pointed out that the number of heat-related deaths in Spain between May 16 and Sep. 30 of last year reached 3,832, an increase of 87.6 percent compared to the same period in 2024.The current heatwave in Spain has triggered the highest level of alert in parts of the north of the country, particularly in Cantabria and the Basque Country, regions that usually escape the most extreme temperatures. While most weather warnings were lifted today, the lowest level, yellow alert, remains in effect in these areas.

Lamine Yamal's return sparked Spain's World Cup into life as the European champions ran riot to beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta.Making his first start in two months after a hamstring injury, Yamal ended La Roja's long wait for a World Cup goal just 10 minutes in. Mikel Oyarzabal then struck twice to put Luis de la Fuente's men 3-0 up inside 24 minutes.De la Fuente's careful management of Yamal's minutes continued as the Barcelona superstar was replaced at half-time before Hassan al-Tambakti's own goal rounded off the scoring."We had to recover good feelings, correct a few things from the last game, but we need to keep improving if we want to achieve our target of getting to the final on July 19," said De la Fuente.Victory propels Spain to the top of Group H ahead of Uruguay's meeting with Cape Verde later. Billed as one of the pre-tournament favourites, Spain got off to a slow start in a 0-0 draw against debutants Cape Verde.A pedestrian performance despite dominating possession only highlighted the importance of Yamal to their quest to be world champions for a second time. De la Fuente also warned his players had been "stung" by the criticism they faced following their opening result and they responded emphatically.Yamal's return was one of four changes in total with Pedro Porro, Dani Olmo and Alex Baena also coming into the starting line-up. After over 2,500 passes and 50 attempts at goal since their last World Cup goal, Spain finally found the net and fittingly Yamal made the breakthrough.Oyarzabal found space in behind the Saudi defence and his low cross picked out the 18-year-old to slot in at the back post. The Saudis held Uruguay 1-1 in their opening game but there was little evidence that the billions splashed to raise the level of their domestic league has aided the national team.Coach Georgios Donis looked particularly irked that two of Spain's goals came from corners. Oyarzabal pounced on Aymeric Laporte's flick-on to give the 2010 winners the breathing space they craved. Just three minutes later, the Real Sociedad forward volleyed home from Olmo's header for his 14th international goal in his last 13 caps.Oyarzabal was inches away from a first-half hat-trick when his audacious effort with the outside of his foot from a narrow angle came back off the crossbar. But with the job done by half-time, De la Fuente could afford the luxury of replacing Yamal and Oyarzabal at the break."Had we had a different result, he (Yamal) would've played for longer but given the result and that the match was under control, we considered his contribution was enough for us to have him in the next game," added De la Fuente.The changes did not disrupt the waves of Spanish attack towards the Saudi goal, but the fourth also came via a corner. Cucurella was afforded acres of space to shoot and although his effort was repelled by Mohammed al-Owais, the rebound deflected in off the unfortunate Tambakti.To round off an ideal afternoon for De la Fuente on his 65th birthday, Nico Williams and Mikel Merino were afforded valuable minutes off the bench in the second period as they too get up to match speed after lengthy absences due to injury.By contrast, the pressure is now on Donis to deliver in Saudi Arabia's final group game against Cape Verde in Houston. Victory will likely take the Arabian Falcons into the knockout stages for the first time since the World Cup was last in the United States 32 years ago.Spain travel to Guadalajara next for the final group game against two-time winners Uruguay on Friday. 

* Cape Verde believe they can build on their Spain result* Vozinha's mother to be at match after U.S. State Department intervention* Uruguay look set to drop Nunez after Saudi drawThere's been a feeling in the Cape Verde camp this week ​that the World Cup debutants ‌can improve even on their opening draw with Spain when ‌they take on ⁠Uruguay in their ‌second Group H match in Miami on ‌Sunday. The Cape Verdeans, in particular goalkeeper and social media sensation Vozinha, became ⁠the early darlings of the tournament when they held the European champions goalless in Atlanta on Monday. Vozinha's tearful celebrations after the match prompted the U.S. State Department to secure his mother, Ana Candida Evora, a visa to enter the country and she will now be at Miami Stadium to watch her son play his second World Cup match. The 40-year-old goalkeeper was ​keener to talk about football than his newfound fame on Thursday and said he and the rest of the squad had quickly switched focus to Uruguay after celebrating the Spain ‌result."We just think that we ⁠can do something ​great and maybe take some points from them," he told reporters."Above ​all, we are here to compete. We shouldn't set limits on ourselves, even though we know we come from a small country." BULLISH ABOUT WINNINGNetherlands-born midfielder Deroy Duarte was more bullish about the chances of what would be a huge upset of the South American powerhouse."You saw the game against Spain," he said. "Nobody expected that we were going to draw that game. So why not win against Uruguay? We have to believe. As long as you can believe, then a lot of things can happen." How much work Vozinha has ‌to do on Sunday probably ‌depends on whether Uruguay reproduce their ⁠first or second-half performance from last week's 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia at ⁠the Miami Stadium.Turning around a ⁠goal down, La Celeste looked a far more impressive team after the break as they equalised and pressed forward looking for a winner.Coach Marcelo Bielsa looks set to axe former Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez, who was anonymous before being taken off at halftime, and replace him with Agustin Canobbio.Full back Juan Manuel Sanabria worked well with ​goalscorer Maxi Araujo on the left flank after coming on at halftime.Argentine Bielsa was furious at his team's ineffectiveness in the first half and, not a man to mince his words, will have made it clear to his players that he expects a better start on Sunday.With Spain their opponents in their last group match in Guadalajara on June 26, Uruguay will be desperate to bank all three points.While up to 30,000 Uruguayans are expected to be cheering on ‌Bielsa's team, there should ​be plenty of support for the Cape Verdeans from their compatriots and neutrals in the crowd.

Spain's ghosts of recent World Cup horror shows reappeared in Atlanta as the European champions were held 0-0 by debutants Cape Verde in their opening game on Monday. Lamine Yamal was left on the bench as the Barcelona superstar is eased back to fitness after nearly two months out with a hamstring injury and even his appearance as a second-half substitute failed to break down Cape Verde's dogged defence. Since winning the World Cup for the first time in 2010, Spain have not won a knockout game and their inability to make dominance of possession count was reminiscent of their meek exits in 2018 and 2022. "Reality has to sink in," said Spain boss Luis de la Fuente. "This is a World Cup. We know that some teams, on paper, they are not better than us and we thought that we were far better than them. But then it's a struggle to win." Blessed with what coach De la Fuente claimed is the best squad in the competition, Spain were considered among the pre-tournament favourites to go all the way and lift the World Cup on July 19. But the importance of Yamal and Nico Williams to their chances of success was underlined by a flat performance. Williams also had an injury-disrupted season at Athletic Bilbao and was not introduced until the 87th minute. Ranked 67 in the world, Cape Verde were making their debut on the global stage and did a nation of just over 500,000 people proud. In stark contrast to the searing temperatures faced by some other sides, Atlanta's state-of-the-art air conditioned stadium meant there was no excuses for the slow tempo of Spain's build-up. Indeed the mid-half hydration break was met by boos with fans frustrated at the break in play despite the cool conditions. It took until six minutes before half-time for Spain to seriously threaten. Marc Cucurella, fresh for sealing his move from Chelsea to Real Madrid, sent over a teasing cross that Ferran Torres turned onto the crossbar and Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha got back on his feet to turn Mikel Oyarzabal's looping header over the bar. Torres tested Vozinha again moments later before Aymeric Laporte's header from a corner was also clawed away by the Cape Verde number one just before half-time. The break came at a good time for the Blue Sharks and they comfortably held out in the second period until Yamal's entrance after the second hydration break. Billed as one of the stars of the tournament, the 18-year-old's appearance instantly lifted the crowd and injected life into the pedestrian Spanish attack. His first involvement set up a decent opening for fellow substitute Mikel Merino which was too close to Vozinha. Yamal also began the move that saw Oyarzabal's effort deflected over with Spain's best chance of the second half. Cape Verde nearly snatched a famous victory in the final minute of the 90 when Dani Borges planted a header too close to Unai Simon. But even without a winner, 40-year-old Vozinha was reduced to tears at full-time as Cape Verde produced the biggest shock of the tournament so far. "I've worked all my life for this, for this moment, for this dream," said Vozinha, who plays for Chaves in the Portuguese second division. "A lot of generations in the past dreamed of this, they didn't achieve it," he added. "The dream came true, for all of us." Spain's road to victory in 2010 also began disappointingly with defeat to Switzerland, but they have much to work on ahead of facing Saudi Arabia in Atlanta once more on Sunday. Cape Verde next take on Uruguay in Miami. 

 Spanish national team star Lamine Yamal admitted he had been "afraid" of missing the World Cup because of the hamstring injury he is still recovering from.The 18-year-old suffered the injury as he scored a penalty for Barcelona against Celta Vigo on April 22. "Internally I was praying it was nothing, that it was just cramp or something like that, because the World Cup was very close and I knew that a hamstring injury is never a short-term thing," said the winger to the Spanish football federation's own media outlet."I was afraid it might be serious and, above all, that even if it wasn't serious, I could suffer a setback and end up missing the World Cup."Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is hopeful he will have him available for La Roja's opening game at the World Cup against Cape Verde on June 15.On Sunday, the player warmed up with his team-mates in Spain's first training session before heading to work in the gym. "It's also true that it helps knowing you're going to play a World Cup, so mentally it's like you haven't played a single game all season, and I'm really eager to make my debut (at the tournament)," he added.Yamal, who starred as Spain won Euro 2024 in Germany, said the World Cup is the "biggest thing" in football and he has dreamt "a thousand times" about lifting the trophy.If Yamal does not make the first match he is expected to play some part against Saudi Arabia in the second on June 21, and Uruguay on June 27 in the other Group H fixtures.
