South Korea team latest to be bussed to wrong Asian Games venue

South Korea were victims of another Asian Games transport mix-up in Japan when the bus carrying their men's volleyball team went to a venue an hour away from where they should have gone.The Games in Aichi-Nagoya have been dogged by organisational problems, with accommodation and transport for the more than 17,000 athletes and officials prime among them.South Korea's volleyball players were forced to cancel their practice on Monday morning ahead of the group game with Taiwan later in the day following the latest logistical issue."An organiser-provided shuttle bus took our team to Okazaki instead of its training venue in Inuyama yesterday morning," an official from the Korea Volleyball Association told AFP on Tuesday."With too much time lost to turn back, the training was cancelled."We lodged a formal complaint to the organisers through the KSOC," the official added, referring to South Korea's Olympic committee.The volleyball team went on to beat Taiwan 3-1. South Korea's men's basketball team were forced to miss training ahead of their final against Japan last week when their bus failed to turn up.The gaffe did not affect their performance as they went on to win the title. Also Monday, the Pakistan men's volleyball side were bussed to the incorrect arena for their game with Uzbekistan, forcing the contest to be pushed back by 45 minutes. "This is another mismanagement by Japan at the ongoing Asian Games," Pakistan captain Murad Jehan said from the bus in an Instagram video. A spokesperson for the local organising committee said the Pakistan and South Korea teams had departed from the same accommodation and there was "an error in matching teams to vehicles"."Each boarded a bus heading to the wrong destination. We sincerely apologise to both teams for the inconvenience," said Ayumi Sakamoto."We caused great inconvenience and the organising committee takes this seriously," the spokesperson added. "It is basic, but we will again make sure boarding teams and vehicle destinations are properly checked and displayed, and work to prevent a recurrence."pst/mjw

Beds too short in 'worst-ever' Asian Games rooms, say South Korea

Accommodation at the Asian Games starting this week in Japan is the "worst ever", South Korean officials told AFP on Monday, also warning of "a serious shortage" of rooms. Beds in shipping container-style huts are too short for players to stretch out, a South Korean basketball chief said, while officials from the Philippines resorted to Airbnb.There is no dedicated athletes' village at the Games, with organisers instead relying on a cruise ship, temporary wooden cabins and hotels in a bid to cut costs. The Games in the city of Nagoya and Aichi prefecture officially open on Saturday but football and basketball is already under way. Jung Jae-yong, vice president of the Korea Basketball Association, told AFP he was deeply unhappy with the cabins where the men's basketball team are staying."Based on my experience this is the worst it has ever been," he said. "Athletes who are over two metres tall cannot even stretch their legs out on the beds. It's unreasonable." Byeon Jun-hyeong, from the basketball team, posted a video on social media showing a leaking sink and soaked floor in his hut.He posted the caption, "Please help us".The huts are set to be home to 2,000 athletes and officials over the more than two weeks of the Games. Indian sports chiefs are so worried about the cabins that they built replicas to help get their athletes used to them.The vice president Jung accused organisers of failing to respond to South Korea's concerns. "The organisers have still not said anything," said Jung."We are very concerned and discussing extensively with the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee what to do about this."Hundreds of athletes were briefly evacuated from their accommodation last week as record rainfall lashed Nagoya.More rain has been forecast in the coming days. - 'Serious shortage' - More than 17,000 athletes and officials are expected at the Games -- a bigger number than the Olympics.Local organisers were initially expecting 15,000 and argued last month that they had "neither the manpower nor the budget" to deal with ballooning numbers.The Olympic Council of Asia later said that everyone would get a place to stay.Star cricketers have voiced fears about a lack of top-notch hotels. A South Korean Olympic committee official told AFP that, with the Games just days away, there are problems."At the moment there is a serious shortage of accommodation not only for the entire South Korean delegation to the Asian Games, but for delegations from around the world in the Aichi-Nagoya area," the official said. "We are doing everything we can to resolve the issue and ensure there are no such problems."Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino told AFP that all his country's athletes had been given a room.But "some officials, like coaches, were moved to different hotels and Airbnb". Asian Games organisers did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.The Italian cruise ship Costa Serena is due to arrive in Nagoya on Tuesday. Between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes will stay on the vessel.The rest will be in hotels, including in Tokyo, where swimming, diving and equestrian events will take place.

New coach won't use AI in bid to make South Korea fans happy

South Korea's new interim coach Robert Moreno said Monday that he wanted to make fans in the country "happy" after a disastrous World Cup and series of damaging controversies.Former Spain coach Moreno, who was forced to deny earlier this year that he used ChatGPT to prepare for games, will be in charge for friendly matches in the coming months.The Korea Football Association (KFA) said he could stay on for the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in January-February, "subject to an evaluation". Moreno named captain Son Heung-min in his squad for four upcoming home friendlies and said he wanted to put a smile back on South Korean fans' faces. "We're going to try to do our work honestly and with the aim of making all Korean football fans happy," said the 48-year-old, who is the first Spaniard to coach South Korea."Good matches, and trying to help the players." Moreno will lead the team against Ecuador and Uruguay in September and Venezuela and Uzbekistan in October.South Korea had been without a coach since Hong Myung-bo quit following their shock group-stage exit from the World Cup in North America in June. Hong's departure did little to quell public outrage over the disappointing campaign and added fuel to pre-existing questions about how he was hired.Police raided KFA headquarters last month as part of an investigation into Hong's 2024 appointment.The KFA also apologised for allegations that it provided sexual entertainment for foreign referees. Moreno named striker Son, now in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles FC, in his first squad along with Atletico Madrid's Lee Kang-in and Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae.Hong's decision to leave Son on the bench in the first half for the decisive match against South Africa at the World Cup baffled and angered many supporters."We're all aware of Son's versatility," said Moreno. "For me he can play in three positions."Moreno also addressed allegations that he used artificial intelligence during his time in charge of Russian club Sochi. Moreno left the top-flight side in September 2025 after a poor run of results and reports said he had heavily relied on ChatGPT in his role, even using it to decide between potential signings.Moreno called it "a piece of news that is completely false and went viral". "Obviously I use technology," he said. "Anyone who spends 10 minutes looking into it can see that everything has been taken out of context and put together to cause harm."

US President orders cut in US-South Korea military exercises

US President Donald Trump ordered a reduction in the joint military exercises with South Korea, which began Monday.In a post on the Truth Social platform Trump said the exercises aren't only costly, but also send an inappropriate message to North Korea, which he described as having posed no threat during his time in the White House.The US president added that he had recently asked South Korea to join the United States in efforts to denuclearize Iran, but it declined.South Korea and the United States began their joint summer military exercises today, with Seoul seeking to accelerate efforts to regain operational control.The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises will continue through Aug. 27 and include joint operations across all domains to enhance the two sides' readiness and capabilities through simulations of realistic threats that reflect the rapidly evolving nature of modern warfare.

S. Korean President calls for talks with North Korea to formally end the Korean War

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday called for talks with North Korea to end their long-running state of war and explore ways to halt the advancement of Pyongyang's nuclear capabilities, pledging to pursue a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.Speaking at a ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of Liberation Day, Lee said: "Let us put down our intentions to threaten each other and begin discussions to end the long-running war as the directly involved parties. In the process, (we) may also discuss effective ways to halt the advancement of the North's nuclear capabilities."Lee said he will embark on a journey to end the war and replace the "unstable armistice system" with a peace regime.His call for dialogue came as North Korea has not responded to repeated initiatives proposed by Seoul since Lee took office in June last year.In his Liberation Day address last year, Lee pledged to respect North Korea's current system, reject unification through absorption and refrain from engaging in hostile acts against Pyongyang.The two Koreas have technically remained at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

Move over, Messi! Robot footballers thrill crowds in South Korea

Jihye SHIN Thirty seconds before kick-off, humanoid robot footballers in red and blue jerseys await the referee's signal in the South Korean port city of Incheon. The match setting is RoboCup, branded as the world's largest robotics competition, where engineers are betting on a fully autonomous robot team that can one day defeat the FIFA World Cup champions. Unlike remote-controlled machines, RoboCup's robots make decisions on their own once a game begins, testing dramatic recent advances in artificial intelligence. On the field Friday, a referee shouted "stop!" as a shot flew out of bounds -- prompting every robot to freeze instantly. Moments later, one squad member -- named "number one" -- scored, to cheers from dozens of spectators. But then came a foul: one robot barges into the goalkeeper, sending it crashing to the ground. "You can't do that," one spectator laughed. Across Incheon's Songdo Convensia convention centre, dozens of matches unfolded simultaneously on Friday as small, medium and large humanoid robots competed on compact pitches and spectators drifted from court to court. Founded in Japan in 1997, RoboCup has expanded beyond football into rescue, home service and industrial robotics while pursuing its long-term goal of building a fully autonomous robot team capable of defeating the FIFA World Cup champions by 2050. Although the robots play autonomously, human team members relay the referee's commands -- such as "stop" and "resume" -- through software during matches, Lea Wedmann, of the Hamburg Bit-Bots team from Germany's University of Hamburg, told AFP. Visitors said watching robot football felt surprisingly similar to viewing a human sporting event. "I had never seen robots playing football before. It was fascinating and really fun," Cho Woo-cheol, a 45-year-old construction company worker, told AFP. "When I first saw them, I found myself supporting the blue team because they looked a bit more human. "They're obviously not moving exactly like people yet, but they were much closer than I expected. Robot football has its own unique charm." - The Messi robot - Another visitor, Kim Mi-hong, 60, predicted robot athletes could one day attract loyal supporters. "If they become really good, I think they'll have fans," she told AFP. "People were already saying, 'The red team is better,' and recognising players by their numbers. As the technology improves, I think fandoms will naturally emerge." That future may not be too far ahead. "We think robots can defeat humans by 2050," said Thomas Rofer, spokesperson for Germany's B-Human team at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. "Recently there has been a big step forward in humanoid robot development. We have already seen one company here demonstrate a robot that can kick as hard as a human." Researchers say advances in artificial intelligence have dramatically accelerated progress in recent years. Morgan Stanley Research estimates that by 2050 around 930 million humanoid robots will be working in repetitive, structured tasks, with the global humanoid robotics market potentially reaching $5 trillion. Unlike professional football, RoboCup offers no prize money, with university teams competing primarily to advance robotics research.But Shim In-wook, a professor of smart mobility engineering at Inha University, believes robot football will ultimately become a sport in its own right. "In the FIFA World Cup you might have one Lionel Messi," he told AFP."But once you build one Messi robot, you can build thousands more."
