Saab has identified Qatar as a priority market for long-term, sustainable growth, with the company emphasising its commitment to building on more than a decade of partnership.“We are focused on building upon our existing foundation of over a decade of partnership. We're working to strengthen relationships with government and industry to support national defence and security priorities, while exploring how our advanced capabilities can contribute to Qatar's strategic objectives,” said Carl Johan Bergholm, senior vice-president and head of Business Area Surveillance at Saab.Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (Dimdex 2026), Bergholm explained that Saab’s approach in the Gulf is built on long-term collaboration with governments and industry.“Partnerships are crucial to Saab's strategy across markets,” he said, pointing to strengthened government-to-government (G2G) relationships between Sweden and Qatar as opening new possibilities in the defence sector.“Our approach involves working closely with Qatar's defence and security authorities, as well as local industry, to establish impactful and collaborative co-operation,” he added. Bergholm explained that this partnership-driven model ensures Saab’s solutions align with national priorities, from protecting borders to securing critical infrastructure.Across the wider Gulf, Saab is committed to expanding its partnerships, said Bergholm. “Driven by growing demand for our wide-ranging offering, Saab is committed to strengthening its partnerships across the Middle East, working closely with both government and industry alike,” he pointed out.While partnerships remain the cornerstone of Saab’s strategy, Bergholm also highlighted the company’s advanced surveillance and radar systems as examples of how technology supports regional defence priorities.He pointed to GlobalEye, which he described as “the most advanced airborne early warning and control solution available today.” The system provides simultaneous air, maritime and ground surveillance from a single platform, supporting operations in peace, crisis and conflict.Bergholm noted that Saab is also showcasing its Giraffe 1X radar, designed to counter drone threats. “This compact 3D AESA radar provides air surveillance, ground-based air defence support, and crucially, drone detection capabilities,” Bergholm said, adding that its software-based design allows detection of even small, slow-moving unmanned systems that traditional radars might miss.In addition, Saab’s Coast Control Radar addresses maritime surveillance needs, according to Bergholm. “Our Coast Control Radar addresses the critical regional need for effective maritime surveillance and protection of coastal infrastructure,” he explained, noting that the system provides 360-degree coverage with early detection capabilities in complex coastal environments.Bergholm also acknowledged the importance of platforms, such as Dimdex 2026, in reinforcing collaboration. “Dimdex is an important regional platform focused on maritime and joint domain defence, and Qatar's hosting of this event reinforces its role as a significant driver of collaboration and innovation in the Middle East,” he said.

Major shipping companies are devising strategies for a return to the Suez Canal after more ‌than two years of disruptions due to security ‌risks in the ‍Red Sea.They have been rerouting vessels via longer, costlier routes around Africa ⁠since November 2023, following ⁠attacks on commercial ships by Yemen's Houthi forces, reportedly in solidarity ‍with Palestinians during warfare in Gaza. A ceasefire agreement reached in October 2025 has led some companies to explore resumption plans, although security remains a key concern. Below are the latest updates: MAERSK: The Danish shipping company said on Thursday it would resume sailings via the Red ‌Sea and Suez Canal for one of its services this month, after two vessels tested the route in December and earlier in ‍January.Maersk said its weekly ⁠service connecting ‌the Middle East and India with the US east coast will be first in the group's staggered return to the Suez route, starting on January 26 with a sailing departing Oman's port of Salalah. CMA CGM: The world's third-largest container shipping line, which has made limited Suez transits when security allows, will use the passage for its India-US INDAMEX service from January, according to a schedule published on its website. Two of ​its vessels sailed through ‌the Suez Canal in December, the authority that runs the waterway said at ⁠the time.CMA CGM ‍did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday. HAPAG-LLOYD: German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd will not adjust its operations in the Red Sea for now, a spokesperson said on Thursday shortly after Maersk said it would resume sailings there.The group's ​CEO said in December that the return of the shipping industry to the Suez Canal would be gradual and there would be a transition period of 60-90 days to adjust logistics and avoid sudden port congestion. WALLENIUS WILHELMSEN: The Norwegian car shipping group is still assessing the situation and will not resume sailing until certain conditions are met, a company ⁠spokesperson said in December.The Suez Canal is the fastest route ‍linking Europe and Asia and, until the Houthi attacks, had accounted for about 10% of global seaborne trade, according to Clarksons Research.The ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, in place since October last year, has renewed hope of normalising Red Sea traffic.The ceasefire has ended major combat in Gaza over the past three months, but both sides have accused the other of regular violations. 

Bangladesh’s cricket board said Tuesday it had repeated its refusal to travel to India for next month’s T20 World Cup during talks with the ICC governing body. With ties tense between the two countries, Bangladesh wants the International Cricket Council to shift their World Cup games from India to co-hosts Sri Lanka, citing security concerns.The World Cup begins on February 7 and Bangladesh are scheduled to play their four group matches in India. The row erupted on January 3, when India forced Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman to quit the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mustafizur, who has played in the IPL for other teams in previous editions, was snapped up at auction in December by Kolkata for more than $1mn. His sacking sparked fury in Dhaka.Tuesday, during a video conference with the ICC, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said it had “reiterated its request for the ICC to consider relocating Bangladesh’s matches outside India”. Political relations between India and Bangladesh soured after a mass uprising in Dhaka in 2024 toppled then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, a close ally of New Delhi. India’s foreign ministry last month condemned what it called “unremitting hostility against minorities” in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, has accused India of exaggerating the scale of the violence. “The BCB reaffirmed its position regarding the decision not to travel to India, citing security concerns,” the BCB said in a statement. “While the ICC highlighted that the tournament itinerary has already been announced and requested the BCB to reconsider its stance, the Board’s position remains unchanged,” the statement added. The ICC have not commented. The BCB said discussions with the ICC continue to “explore possible solutions”, it added, but that it “remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of its players, officials and staff”.Bangladesh, led by Litton Das, are placed ninth in the ICC T20 rankings. They have played all the nine editions of the tournament, but have never qualified for the semi-finals. 

Japan and South Korea aim to deepen security and economic ties to counter growing tension in East Asia, their ‌leaders said Tuesday, after a summit meeting in ‌Japan.Japanese Prime Minister Sanae ‍Takaichi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung discussed industrial supply chains, artificial intelligence, ⁠denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and ⁠cooperation with mutual ally, the US."The importance of Japan-South ‍Korea relations, as well as cooperation among Japan, South Korea and the US, continues to grow," Takaichi said in a joint announcement with Lee in her home region of Nara.Lee said the leaders will also step up co-operation to combat online scams that have targeted victims across borders.The talks came ‌a week after Lee met Chinese President Xi Jinping, amid strained ties between Tokyo and Beijing following remarks by Takaichi that Japan could deploy ‍its forces if a Chinese ⁠attack on ‌Taiwan posed an existential threat.China regards Taiwan as part of its territory, a claim the democratically governed island rejects.Earlier, Lee, who is set to spend two days in Japan, vowed not to intervene in its dispute with China, although the diplomatic stand-off was not desirable for regional peace."The current international environment and trade order are unprecedentedly volatile," he said, speaking alongside Takaichi. "It is an urgent task of our time ​to deepen bilateral relations."Despite a recent ‌thaw, ties between Tokyo and Seoul have been strained by disputes over Japan's colonial rule ⁠of the Korean peninsula, ‍including the treatment of Korean women and labourers conscripted to support Japan's wartime effort.Takaichi added that she welcomed progress in efforts to identify human remains discovered at an abandoned coal mine in western Japan, where some 136 Koreans and ​47 Japanese died in 1942, when the mine beneath the seabed collapsed and flooded.South Korea says the remains of as many as 10,000 Korean forced labourers are still in Japan, which says it has identified about 3,000.The leaders said they would continue their "shuttle diplomacy" effort, with Takaichi expected to travel next to South Korea for their third meeting, without giving a date. 

Indonesia's defence minister ‌met Pakistan's air force chief in Islamabad to discuss a potential deal that ‌includes the sale of combat ‍jets and killer drones to Jakarta, three security officials with knowledge of the meeting Monday said.The talks come ⁠as Pakistan's defence industry moves forward with a ⁠series of defence procurement negotiations, including deals with Libya's National Army and Sudan's army, and ‍looks to establish itself as a sizeable regional player.Indonesia's Defence Ministry confirmed the meeting between Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Pakistan's Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu."The meeting focused on discussing general defence co-operation relations, including strategic dialogue, strengthening communication between defence institutions, and opportunities for mutually beneficial co-operation in various fields in the long term," defence ministry spokesperson Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait told Reuters, adding the talks had not yet led to concrete ‌decisions.One source said the talks revolved around the sale of JF-17 jets, a multi-role combat aircraft jointly developed by Pakistan and China, and killer drones designed for surveillance and striking targets. The other two ‍sources said the talks were in an ⁠advanced stage and ‌involved more than 40 JF-17 jets. One of them said Indonesia was also interested in Pakistan's Shahpar drones.The sources did not share any discussions about delivery timelines and the number of years a proposed deal would span.The Pakistani military's public relations wing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.One additional security source with knowledge of military procurement talks said Pakistan was discussing the sale of JF-17 Thunder jets, air defence systems, training for junior, mid-level, and senior Indonesian air force officials, and engineering staff."The Indonesia deal is in the pipeline," retired Air Marshal Asim Suleiman, who remains briefed on air force deals, told Reuters, adding that the ​number of JF-17 jets involved ‌was close to 40.Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto was in Pakistan last month for a two-day visit for talks on improving bilateral ties, including ⁠defence.Indonesia has put in a slew ‍of orders for jets in the past few years, including 42 French Rafale jets worth $8.1bn in 2022 and 48 KAAN fighter jets from Turkey last year to strengthen its air force and replace its ageing air force fleet.Jakarta has also considered buying China's J-10 fighter jets and is in talks to purchase US-made F-15EX jets.Interest in the Pakistani ​military's weapons development programme has surged since its jets were deployed in a short conflict with India last year.The JF-17s have been at the centre of that growing attention, figuring in a deal with Azerbaijan and the $4bn weapons pact with the Libyan National Army. Pakistan is also eyeing a defence pact with Bangladesh that could include the Super Mushshak training jets and JF-17s, as ties improve with Dhaka.Reuters has also reported that Islamabad was in talks with Riyadh for a defence deal that could be worth between $2bn and $4bn and involves the ⁠conversion of Saudi loans into military supplies. 

Qatar Charity in 2025 implemented high-quality development projects in Somalia, with 990 projects across seven key sectors, benefitting 528,233 people at a total cost of over QR 122,560,732.Qatar Charity implemented 233 projects for food supply and food security pegged at QR 7,412,886, benefitting 267,585 people.These included providing in-kind food assistance and food vouchers, implementing Iftar and Udhiyah projects, and supporting refugees and internally displaced persons in addition to implementing food programmes in partnership with the World Food Programme, which contributed to improving temporary access to food and reducing food consumption gaps.In the water and sanitation sector, 76 projects were implemented, benefiting 49,900 people, at a total cost of QR 3,389,050. The projects focused on drilling shallow and deep wells, establishing water purification plants, implementing solar-powered systems, and delivering potable water to displaced persons' communities, reducing health risks and improving public health conditions.In the health sector, Qatar Charity implemented 24 health projects, benefitting 143,051 people, at a cost of QR 9,791,300. They included building and equipping health facilities, performing general and specialised surgeries, treating critical cases, supporting blindness prevention programmes, and providing medical equipment and supplies, which enhanced access to basic and specialised healthcare services.Interventions also included projects in the social housing and shelter sectors with the implementation of 15 projects, benefiting 34,370 people at a cost ofQR7,026,259. These projects focused on building housing units and an integrated village, providing tents for displaced families and installing solar-powered lighting systems, contributing to improved living conditions and housing for the most vulnerable groups.Qatar Charity implemented 23 projects in the education and culture sector, benefitting 3,196 people at a cost of QR 3,362,072. Activities included building and renovating schools, equipping classrooms, and supporting educational and religious institutions, in addition to graduating 185 university students, enhancing capacity and improving the quality of educational services.The economic empowerment sector saw the implementation of 603 projects, benefitting 5,850 individuals, at a cost of QR 9,204,250. Interventions focused on supporting income-generating activities, providing small means of production, and equipping shops, contributing to improved family income, social cohesion, and reduced reliance on humanitarian aid.The social welfare sector constituted the largest component in terms of funding. Qatar Charity implemented 16 projects, benefitting 24,456 individuals, at a cost of QR82,374,914. Interventions included disbursing cash assistance to sponsored individuals, implementing the Eid clothing project and providing tools and supplies for people with disabilities, thus contributing to providing them with a dignified life and supporting their social integration. The total number of sponsors in Somalia is 23,613, with orphans topping the list at 20,861 including 1,234 needy families, 755 students, in addition to sponsoring 581 teachers and 182 people with special needs.

Italy’s ambassador to Qatar Paolo Toschi has said that relations between the two countries are stronger than ever, highlighting expanding co-operation across politics, security, defence, energy and culture, as Qatar marked its National Day Thursday.Speaking to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), the envoy described bilateral ties as witnessing "unprecedented strength", adding that Rome and Doha are looking with confidence towards a future of deeper partnerships and shared ambitions.Toschi noted that both countries are keen to strengthen trade co-operation while supporting regional and international stability, expressing confidence that bilateral co-operation will continue to grow in ways that support sustainable development and mutual prosperity in the years ahead.The envoy praised Qatar's foreign policy approach, saying that the country has consistently demonstrated its ability to act as a mediator and constructive partner during periods of regional and global challenge.From Italy's perspective, he said, Qatar's active, balanced and forward-looking diplomacy has helped consolidate its position as a trusted partner in dialogue, peace efforts and international mediation.Toschi added that Qatar's capacity to engage constructively with a wide range of international actors reflects a clear strategic vision, contributing to regional stability and supporting multilateral solutions to global challenges.On security co-operation, he referred to a recently signed memorandum of understanding between the interior ministers of both countries, which will allow Qatar's Lekhwiya force to provide support during the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, scheduled for February 2026.He also highlighted close defence co-operation, pointing to recent visits by Italy's Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto, as well as the Chief of the Italian Carabinieri, General Salvatore Luongo, and Italy's Chief of Police, Vittorio Pisani.Reflecting on Qatar National Day (QND), Toschi said the occasion represents an opportunity for citizens and residents alike to celebrate the country's wise leadership, resilience and achievements in building the modern State of Qatar.For the Italian embassy and the Italian community, he added, the day is also a chance to reaffirm the strong friendship between the two nations, while recognising Qatar's commitment to progress alongside the preservation of its cultural heritage – values that Italy holds in high regard.The envoy said he had witnessed a significant national transformation during his time in Qatar, particularly in infrastructure, culture, education and innovation.He noted that Qatar National Vision 2030 has translated into tangible achievements that have improved quality of life and created opportunities for future generations.Italy, he said, deeply appreciates the determination and strategic planning behind these successes and looks forward to further strengthening trade and economic co-operation on this basis.Toschi extended his warm congratulations to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and the people of Qatar on National Day, affirming that Italy stands alongside Qatar as a friend and partner committed to promoting peace, dialogue and shared progress, and wishing the country continued stability, innovation and prosperity.  

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani met Wednesday in his office at Lusail Palace with US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and her accompanying delegation, visiting the country. They discussed the strategic bilateral relations and ways to enhance and develop them as well as a number of issues and topics of common concern.
