Manchester City midfielder Rodri called on referees “to be neutral” in a furious tirade after their Premier League title bid suffered another setback following a 2-2 draw at Tottenham. City were cruising towards victory in north London at 2-0 up on Sunday, but the momentum swung in Spurs’ favour after a goal by Dominic Solanke was allowed to stand despite the forward appearing to foul Marc Guehi before making contact with the ball. Solanke then produced a stunning scorpion kick to equalise and leave City six points adrift of leaders Arsenal. “I know we won too much and the people don’t want us to win but the referee has to be neutral and for me honestly, it’s not fair,” Rodri told Australian broadcaster Stan Sport. “At the end, when everything is finished, we are frustrated because it’s so clear the foul. He kicked the leg and of course with the push of the action on the ball, the ball goes in. “We have to pay attention to these little things otherwise it’s going to be difficult for everyone because this league is like this – it’s about small details and everything counts, so I think today is a very tough day for us in this sense.” The controversial call was just the latest decision that City feel has gone against them in recent weeks. Pep Guardiola claimed last week that the club’s success during his golden era had come “despite” decisions consistently going against his side. “It’s one game and another game and it’s not possible,” added Rodri. “He anticipated the leg of Marc and it’s a clear foul, but it’s not today. It’s two or three games in a row and I don’t know why, honestly.” However, Guardiola insisted Manchester City will keep fighting for the Premier League title despite blowing the draw at Tottenham. “The game was well played and sometimes for long balls and second balls you miss it. We would prefer not to have the transition but an emotional issue for the first goal that the referee conceded to Spurs and after that the momentum is difficult to control.” Guardiola was booked for his protests and looked in disbelief when the incident was played on big screens inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. City have won just once in their last six league games, allowing Arsenal to recover from their own recent stumble. The Gunners’ 4-0 win at Leeds on Saturday suggested they are back on track, but Guardiola is adamant City can still catch Mikel Arteta’s men. “With 14 games to play? As much the chance is there, the hopes will always be there,” he said. “I know that these types of games always in the past you had to capitalise and win but yeah, the difficulties for many things, but players are coming back and I saw incredibly good spirit and many things. “We had the injuries, one month ago we had a lot with nine or 10 players out but at the same time we are there and all the calendar is what it is.” Injury-hit Tottenham’s spirited escape act was a welcome boost for under-fire boss Thomas Frank. The Dane had faced calls for his sacking in recent weeks, but leading Tottenham into the Champions League last 16 has infused his side with renewed belief. With 11 players unavailable and Solanke and Archie Gray limping towards the end, Frank hailed the spirit of his depleted group. “I’m extremely happy that we finally got a point out of a big second half,” he said. “I said it before, this team’s ability to respond to setbacks and show resilience, I think we are growing it bit by bit. “And we are, by the way, building it with, I don’t know, players dropping left, right and centre to injury. I think that shows everything about the team and what they are building. Very proud of the players.”

At the Education City Stadium, Al Dasha Cup turned football into a powerful statement on inclusion, confidence and possibility, as children of all abilities competed on one of Qatar’s grandest stages.For the children taking part, the tournament became a defining moment where confidence, belonging and ambition mattered as much as the final score.Organised through Qatar Foundation (QF)’s Ability Friendly Programme, the event brought together children with disabilities and special needs, offering them the opportunity to compete in a world class sporting venue and, more importantly, to be seen first as athletes.“This tournament is all about building players’ confidence to compete. What they learn through competition is how to win and how to lose and those are life skills, not just sporting ones,” said Kathleen Bates, head of Ability Friendly at the QF.For Bates, the value of Al Dasha Cup runs deeper than performance on the pitch.“They’re learning how to work as a team, how to win as a team, how to lose as a team and good sportsmanship overall,” she said. “Those are three very important things we’re taking away from this tournament.”The competition forms part of a natural progression within the Ability Friendly Programme, which has spent more than eight years expanding access to sport for people with disabilities.“We’ve provided many opportunities to learn sport and advance in sport. Competition is a very natural pathway. This is where they take what they’ve learned and show it off,” Bates explained.Playing inside Education City Stadium added another layer of meaning.“You get a chance to have some glory on you,” she said. “You’re playing in a beautiful stadium, with a real competitive feel.”The transformation among players was visible both on and off the field.“This is a tremendous boost to their confidence,” Bates said. “We’ve had people scoring goals and people cheering for them and they’re so proud.”She noted that the impact extends beyond the players themselves. “It’s incredibly motivating for their families and support groups to keep bringing them to sessions and to keep pushing them to develop their athletic abilities.”Perhaps most significantly, the tournament allows participants to redefine how they see themselves.“They can go back to school or work as a footballer, not somebody with a disability,” she said. “Sports is such a unifier. That sense of camaraderie and companionship is so important.”Ryan Moignard, a senior supervisor with the Ability Friendly Programme, described Al Dasha Cup as both a sporting and a cultural event.“This event is deeply rooted in culture,” he said. “The idea around inclusion is that everyone is involved, of all abilities.”The tournament welcomed players of different ages and genders, but its core focus remained clear.“Every child taking part over these days is a disabled child or a special needs child,” Moignard said. “This platform gives them a pathway to develop their skills and improve everything they’ve achieved so far.”For Moignard, one of the most powerful aspects of the event is its setting.“They’re playing in one of the few World Cup stadiums in the world,” he said. “Previously, children with disabilities might not have had that opportunity. Now, they’re playing where their icons once played.”Addressing families' hesitation, Moignard stressed the importance of understanding and adaptation.“It’s about learning what supports each child best,” he said. “We build personal profiles, understand triggers and strengths and adapt sessions accordingly.”Small-group environments help build more than just technical skills. “They develop social circles, self-esteem and self-confidence,” he said. “That improves overall wellbeing and it comes from close collaboration with families.”Both Bates and Moignard see the programme as part of a broader shift in Qatar towards inclusion.“The country is evolving and becoming more accessible,” Bates said. “There’s a huge demand and we hear it from families every day.”Moignard’s message to the public was simple and direct.“We can all achieve our dreams,” he said. “Many of these children were once told they wouldn’t play football. The evidence is here. They’re competing, and they’re achieving.”As the final whistle blew at Education City Stadium, Al Dasha Cup left behind more than memories.It left proof that when opportunity meets belief, inclusion becomes not an idea but a lived reality. 

Manchester City suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat against Bodo/Glimt as the Norwegian minnows caused one of the biggest shocks in Champions League history. Pep Guardiola’s side were blown away by Kasper Hogh’s first half brace and a second half strike from Jens Petter Hauge at the ecstatic Aspmyra Stadion. Rayan Cherki got one back moments after Hauge’s goal, but Rodri’s dismissal for two bookings left City in tatters as Bodo/Glimt celebrated their first ever win in the Champions League group phase. In a fishing town situated 200km north of the Arctic Circle, the 2023 European champions were caught cold in freezing temperatures of minus two degrees. Bodo’s entire population of only 55,000 people could almost fit into City’s Etihad Stadium. But Kjetil Knutsen’s underdogs ignored the huge financial and talent gap between the clubs to inflict a chastening defeat on the Premier League giants. Bodo/Glimt, who hadn’t played since December after the end of the Norwegian season, reached the Europa League semi-finals last term, an impressive run that maintained their remarkable rise over the last decade. In their first ever season in the Champions League group phase, Bodo/Glimt had already earned creditable draws against Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham. City failed to heed the warning, playing with a lack of urgency in the face of Bodo/Glimt’s relentless pressing. They travelled to Norway earlier than Guardiola’s usual schedule to ensure his players were able to practise on Bodo/Glimt’s artificial pitch. Yet they were totally out of sync in the latest disjointed display in an increasingly troubled season. City are without a win in their last four Premier League matches, with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester United leaving them seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Guardiola will be alarmed by City’s second successive tame surrender, which exposed the Spainard’s claim that his players had rediscovered their hunger after finishing without a trophy last season. The City boss had said he planned to enjoy the Northern Lights from his hotel before the match, but that will be his only fond memory from one of the most embarrassing losses of his glittering career. City’s final group phase fixture is at home to Galatasaray on January 28 as they try to seal an automatic place in the last 16 via a top-eight finish. 

Manchester City signed Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on a five-and-a-half-year contract for a reported fee of £20mn. City stepped up their pursuit of the England international after suffering an injury crisis at centre-half. Guehi, who came close to joining Liverpool on transfer deadline day in September, is City’s second signing of the January transfer window after their capture of Ghana winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for about £65 million. “I am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player,” Guehi said. “This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career. I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players. It feels good to be able to say that. I want to grow as a player and a person, and I know at this club that’s going to happen.” City boss Pep Guardiola praised his club for sealing the deal for the highly sought after defender. “A top central defender, playing for the national team. Personally, thanks to the club to bring him here because he’s come at the perfect age, he can play right and left,” he said. “I know how much he wanted to choose us. With the problems that we have in the back in the next few months it’s really, really important he’s here. I’m pretty sure if he had a long contract at Crystal Palace it would have been impossible, but the fact that it’s six months (left), end of contract, the situation was easier in those terms.” The Chelsea academy graduate played 188 times for Palace after moving to Selhurst Park from the Blues in 2021. He captained Palace to FA Cup glory against City in May – the first major trophy in the south London club’s history – and has won 26 England caps. Other teams reportedly interested in the defender, including Liverpool once again and Bayern Munich, were understood to be targeting a move at the end of the season, when Guehi would have been a free agent. Guardiola’s men, dethroned as Premier League champions by Liverpool last year, are second in the table, seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Central defenders John Stones, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol all missed from Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford. The club are also still challenging for silverware in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. Guardiola has overseen an expensive rebuild of his squad over the past year, with a clutch of long-serving players exiting the club, including Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson.
